About the Artist
Larry Pattis succeeds in merging styles of instrumental guitar not normally found in the same room together. His love of classical composers and performers is evident in the lyrical nature of his compositions. While devoted to the emotive and lyrical side of the instrument, Larry demonstrates considerable technical prowess. His musical vision is a blending of beauty with technique, to bring forth the many voices that the steel string guitar can manifest. Like that of classical guitar masters, Pattis' music is filled with strong melodic content and rich harmonic counterpoint, supported by moving, evocative rhythms. Pattis allows the experiences of life -- both large and small -- to influence his writing. His pieces are inspired by his relationships to places and friends, but also to the strong emotions we all have in common.
His musical explorations can be strong or tender; lighthearted or melancholy, but an artful contrast is always at the forefront of his compositions. Most of all, Larry Pattis loves the guitar in all its forms and many voices. He has embraced the instrument and its complex character, taking what pleases him most, then adding his own voice to a grand chorus of composers who have delighted audiences for centuries with the simplicity and elegance the solo guitar can offer. An evening spent with Larry represents an immersion in the beauty and diversity of the acoustic guitar.

Like one of his great heroes, Thelonious Monk, pianist Randy Weston never lets his classics go, continually reworking and resetting them on record as well as in performance. But if you think you can safely pass on yet another album including "Blue Moses," "African Sunrise," "Hi Fly" and "Portrait of Frank Edward Weston," think again. The 80-year-old Brooklyn native, one of the first American artists to effect a merger of bop-school jazz and North African forms, is enjoying new creative life in the lively company of strumming, popping bassist Alex Blake and African-style percussionist Neil Clarke. Not only does "Zep Tepi" capture him at the height of his powers, it blesses him with the best recorded sound he has had in a long time. That's no minor element: His dancing right hand is a wonder to behold in the way it makes melodies flower and no one gives the dark side of the keyboard the deep luster and body that Weston does, whether hammering rhythm notes or lyrically introducing a ballad. It's great to hear a recording that does justice to his earthy elegance. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Weston.......2007-05-25
Just a superb trio recording by Randy Weston, at age 80, playing his greatest hits. Fantastic rhythm section, especially the bassist, who uses the bass in the fashion of an African rhythm instrument. Weston's forceful playing is undiminished by age, and he offers fresh takes on his famous pieces. Topped by superb recording quality, this CD is a winner.
A Joyful Call For One And All........2006-03-21
(Edited from a prior feature, copyright 2006 Michael F. Hopkins)
Pianist, composer, elder statesman Randy Weston
has struck memorable hallmarks over the half-century
plus that he has blessed us with his exceptional music,
riveting performances, and wondrous recordings.
LITTLE NILES, UHURU AFRIKA, IN THE SPIRITS OF
OUR ANCESTORS, and MARRAKECH IN THE COOL OF THE
EVENING are among the many classics by which
this Tutsi-sized champion of the Black aesthetic has
brought the intense virtuosity of African American
genius, and the insistent diversity of African legacy,
together to form a highly personal expression which
continues to inspire entire generations, uplifting the
world.
In the auspices of his 80th year, the Brooklyn-born
grandmaster strides forth with his most powerful and
personal album to date. Fresh from the independent
Random Chance Records, ZEP TEPI is Brother
Weston at his most culturally astute, spiritually
focused, and emotionally open. The thunder has
never resounded more deeply, nor has the lightning
struck more dearly than it does here.
His first trio album in a very long time, ZEP TEPI
steps boldly forth with the strongly dancing sound
which is a Weston trademark. Engineer Tom
Berkeley is to be commended for astutely capturing
the depth, dimension and impact of this unique sound
as none have done before. Artist Ogandube Fayomi
provides the album's impeccably panoramic cover
illustration and photos, set to fine balance by the
jacket layout and design of Minor Swing Graphics'
Ed McConnell.
These and others form an impeccable team which,
through the production of Paul West, makes things
far easier for the artists to get straight to the
aesthetic business at hand.
Setting this recording into sterling excellence, we find
bassist Alex Blake strutting, strumming, and singing his
way through grand scapes of lustrous melody. Meeting
Weston's every touch with a supple grasp all his own,
Blake stirs the imagination with his swift, sure polytonal
rhapsodies, able to turn rhythm and groove on the
proverbial dime! As astonishing is the gripping subtlety
of percussionist Neil Clarke. Avoiding the traditional
trap set, his sifting harmonic eye and ear provides an
emancipating force which complements Weston with
chromatic tapestries of multicultural splendor.
Thus, ZEP TEPI is a hearty voyage from the Nile to
the Delta, Blues to Bop and swinging about, beyond
and within.
Bask in the jubilation of "African Sunrise", and the
penetrating glow of "The Healers", as you gather
the motion of your odyssey across solemn earth and
vibrant rainbow. Enter the brisk, quenching jet stream
boiled to a fine brew in "Portrait Of Frank Edward
Weston", a tribute to Weston's Africa-conscious
father first heard (and with Blake!) in a concert
recording 30 years ago.
Long-acknowledged landmarks "Berkshire Blues"
and "Hi-Fly" (here spelled "High Fly") are given fresh
readings which prance and prowl with sophisticated fire.
Call and response are richly enacted throughout this
session, and all the brothers are phenomenal.
At the heart of this bountiful offering, we find the man,
his piano, and a hearty song to sing. Here, two of
Weston's most beguiling solo performances sing
straight to the soul, resonating with radiance and
a smile. "Route Of The Nile" shimmers with a lazy
sway, frequently rocking you to and fro in a
comforting ride on the streams of a broader
history. "Ballad For T" is a tantalizing tribute
to the immortal Thelonious Monk, spun with all
the charm, wit, mysterioso and wonder that Monk
could touch us with.
Carrying the memory of that touch firm in his own
special grasp, Weston delivers the distant and the
down home to your front door.
ZEP TEPI joyously begins with the most
celebratory rendition of the epic "Blue Moses"
ever recorded. Listen to Weston ruminate and
resonate his perceptions through the keys, joined
by Blake tapping into sonorities akin to Mali-
born storytellers and Mississippi troubadours, as
Clarke enters the ritual with his own percolating
summons which fires the Holy Call. Griots have
much to say.
Journey's end is equally joyous, Guy Warren's
"Love, The Mystery Of" performed with deep,
playful passion as its instrumental high points
ease into the sweet vocal chant of communal prayer
in purest invocation - no frills needed and no dogma
allowed!
Lesson and sermon consummated, it is deepest
Wisdom which beckons us on. Character is the
candle which illuminates the wisdom, and the
art. The glow of that candle is strong and
warming in the timeless call of ZEP TEPI.
Come in from the cold.

Power Blues.......2007-03-24
I really love Howard's Brown Paper Bag album, but Liquor Store Legend is even better. The production is very good and Howard's guitar smokes throughout. There a couple of rockers on this album, but Howard always plays them with a blues feel. This is unlike some of todays blues guitarist who to me play rock rather than blues.
The slow blues Wonder Why is great and the accoustic numbers Got To Get It Going and Next Train Out compliment it.
The guitar solo's in Power and Walking In The Rain leap out at you and I defy anyone who says they can keep still when listening to Lets Go For A Ride, Hanging By A Thread, and Take Me Baby.
This is a very good album by an excellent musician who has a genuine love performing blues.

Simply one of the best latin jazz groups ever!!!.......2006-07-05
Jerry Gonzalez's Rumba Buhaina - The Music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers SMOKES!!!! This has to be one of the all time greatest Bebop-Latin Jazz CDs, because it floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Forget Tjader, Santamaria, and Puentes because Jerry Gonzalez & the Ft.Apache Band takes those heavyweights to task!!! This crazy fusion of bop and latin jazz produces a thrilling sound that transcends genre. If you're not a fan of Jerry Gonzalez & the Ft. Apache Band you will be after listening to Rumba Buhaina!!!
As strong as anything he's ever done.......2006-05-30
Jerry Gonzalez will be forever immortalized by his altogether remarkable disc under the rubric of the Fort Apache Band, Rumba Para Monk. By transposing the great bebop pioneer and altogether iconoclastic composer and pianist Thelonius Monk into an authentically Latin key, he practically created a new sub-genre of jazz, what might be called neo-Latin bebop.
And it unfortunately proved to be something of a dead-end, as this kind of thing often happens to be: instead of providing a new pathway to ever greater self-expression and musical adventure, Rumba Para Monk stood out as a kind of pinnacle or apex which subsequent discs, fine as they were, seemed unable to surmount, eventually resulting in the disbanding of a very fine, but increasingly etiolated, outfit.
Well, they're back (after a short and admittedly quite bracing venture by Jerry into Nuevo Flamenco) and better than ever. This is certainly the best thing the Fort Apache Band has recorded since Rumba Para Monk, except, perhaps, for that altogether brilliant disc, Earthdance, the last featuring Carter Jefferson, I believe. They're re-energized, tighter than ever, and leader Gonzalez seems to have recaptured that unique vision of blending jazz and Latin musics into something greater than the sum or their parts.
OK, no one will ever replace the great Carter Jefferson and I DO very much miss John Stubblefield, but Joe Ford (on alto and soprano sax) is playing better than ever, Andy Gonzalez has emerged as perhaps the premier Latin jazz bassist on the scene, Larry Willis on piano not only has sick chops but an incredibly deep swing, Ignacio Berroa cooks like a madman, and the leader is unmistakable on trumpet (especially muted, where he extends and pushes out Miles' message) and percussion. But here's the kicker: The group casually rolls out the deepest, swingingest grooves amid such killer melodic and harmonic sophistication as to have practically single-handedly dragged that somewhat lumbering creature, Latin jazz, willy-nilly, into the 21st century.
There are others--Danilo Perez, Dafnis Prieto, Omar Sosa, Susie Ibarra, Miguel Zenon, and Edward Simon come to mind--who have advanced the music in other ways, often by melding authentic national folkloric sensibilities with jazz, but no one has quite made the same move as Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band to integrate the whole history of Latin music with classic jazz all in the most up-to-date melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic setting.
And it doesn't hurt that these boys are reinterpreting some great classics by Shorter, Hubbard, Golson, and Monk, plus presenting some very attractive originals entirely within these aesthetic parameters.
All in all, a wonderful disc; certainly my comeback record of the year, and absolutely worth acquiring.
Back and cooking, even it it isn't "Rumba Para Monk".......2006-05-18
Ah, the Fort Apache Band is back on record, after roughly a decade (during which Jerry G. wandered to Spain, wrestled with some personal demons, apparently, and recorded a jazz/flamenco cross-over nearly rivaling Miles' "Sketches of Spain").
The six-legged, thirty-fingered monster that is the
A. Gonzalez/J. Gonzalez/Berrios rhythm collaboration is still cooking at an intensity that most bands need five or six players to manage. Here, they apply their skills to some material from the 1950's-1970's Blakey/Messengers book (more Wayne Shorter's compositions than anything else; NOT mostly the Blakey/Golson "standards").
The result isn't quite the astonishing revelation of Afro-Cuban rhythmic complexity that "Rumba Para Monk" was, (lo, those years ago) nor is it quite as polished. The exploration of the material doesn't seem quite as startling, in part because lots of people have been exploring Shorter's compositions in new ways in the last decade. Jerry's trumpet work still carries echoes of Miles, but his voice is becoming still more distinctive, as he refines it.
Nevertheless, as a band with greater longevity than most alive and working in jazz today, it's great to hear these guys again.
Get this, and see'em live if they come to your town.
Apache for life.......2006-02-13
I'm honored to be the first one to review this beautiful recording. The boys are back after a long while. Unfortunately, they are one Apache down. We miss you John Stubblefield. Once again though, Jerry, Andy, Larry, Steve, and Joe affirm their place in the halls of greatness with Rumba Buhaina. The Fort Apache Band is the greatest small afrocuban jazz ensemble of all times, bar none. Virtuosity, respect for tradition, mood, and purity, as usual. Maybe their finest? Bu would be astonished.

More great European jazz.......2004-01-07
Sounding quite a little like Michael Moore, the great expat American clarinetist and alto saxophonist, esp. his Bob Dylan cover album Jewels and Binoculars, Lotz of Music has produced a very fine disc. The Moore connection doesn't surprise; after all, they share a percussionist (Michael Vatcher); they cover three Moore tunes ("Gabriel," "Eth," and "Franz"), they're from Amsterdam (Moore's headquarters), and they also cover a Dylan tune "Every Grain of Sand." They also recall Clouson Three, another Moore band.
In any case, a very attractive vibe surfaces--edgy, modern, rhythmically challenging, lots of space--sometimes slightly creepy, sometimes dreamy, often starkly beautiful. A good deal of this comes from Eric Surmenian on acoustic bass, who plays some very attractive muted arco lines over against the dancing piano of Mark van Roon (check out esp. their otherworldly treatment of Moore's "Eth"). Their reading of Sonny Rollins's classic, "Oleo," also stands out by virtue of its open expressiveness all the while maintaining the Rollins groove; Vatcher's the star here, with leader Mark Alban Lotz's flute also soaring, biting, and fluttering, as appropriate.
Other standouts include "Pygmy Lounge," where the band improvises "over prerecorded ambient sounds from a pygmy village right after rainfall" (from the liner notes); "Franz," another Moore tune, with its eerie sound signature (ethereal piano, odd percussive treatments, including, I think, "glass organ," and an almost Satie-ish feel); "Zingaro," a sheerly beautiful take on a somewhat obscure Jobim tune rendered as a slow samba with a tango-like feel; and their very Moore-ish reading of Dylan's "Every Grain of Sand," with Vatcher employing some of the same percussive moves that made Jewels and Binoculars such a standout disc (unfortunately not available through Amazon).
Very accomplished and definitely worth a careful listen.

Great to have this ground-breaking disc back in print.......2006-08-18
Originally issued on the Stash label in 1989, this disc defined for me an emerging new jazz ezzthetic: hip, in-your-face, counter-cultural, but strangely apolitical. Certainly not the brash, Charlie Haden LMO approach, with its gratuitous anti-establishment, left-wing-pandering MO.
Rather, what we have here is the heart-cry of a Philadelphia (city of brotherly love?!)-based black man, a man who most certainly has felt the subtle oppression of just-beneath-the-surface racism, but who has emerged with a glorious vision of freedom and integrity intact. Quite an accomplishment, and not to be discounted.
Featuring the fabulous and criminally underrecorded Monette Sudler on guitar, this music floats and stings, branding listeners with way smart soundscapes that were to become the seed ground for such things as Matt Shipp's Blue Label.
Reissuers Random Chance were wise to choose the gently anthemic tune "Peaceful Warrior" as the title for their re-release; it certainly is a high point on a set lacking any weak tracks.
Sounding even more essential nearly two decades later, this disc establishes Khan Jamal as one of the pioneers of Nu Jazz.
Highly recommended.

Absolutely Amazing CD.......2005-01-04
Pyeng Threadgill's CD is absolutely amazing.
She has a voice that is clear and sweet.
Her vocal range is amazing! Gives me goose bumps just listending to the CD.
Fresh and original cover tunes.......2004-06-27
These songs have all been covered to death many times over but Pyeng Threadgill finds something new in each of them. The band is wonderful and gives a different feel to each song. Ms. Threadgill has a beautiful clear voice and it is easy to understand the lyrics; her phrasing makes them relevant (or as relevant as they can be) to the modern listener. I find them captivating.
The only drawback is that the styles are all over the map; you don't get much of a feeling that these songs were interpreted by the same musicians at the same session.
No home other than this home.......2004-06-04
Fresh, upbeat and innovative reworking of a classic artist and his songs. This album is a stand out of the current blues retrospective. The instrumentation is crisp and gives a modern feel to all the songs. The vocals take you on a journey through every kind of emotion, leaving you wanting more.Stand out tracks include Phonograph blues, Last fair deal gone down and They're Red Hot.
Robert Johnson Transformed.......2004-05-09
Pyeng brings jazz, funk and gospel influences to these interpretations of Robert Johnson songs. Some are so transformed as to sound like new songs. Very original and well worth the listen.
Incredibly Crafted.......2004-03-19
This album is one of the best I heard in a long time. I love it, it has all the elements I look for. It's fun and funky, it's not at all regular, it's sounds fresh even though the songs themselves are from the twenties, the arrangements are so varied. It's like the band or the track just holds down a groove and the singer hovers above, her voice is pristine.
Since I bought it I've been listening to it non-stop, especially "Love in Vain" and "Phonograph Blues"!!

This is the best record i've picked up this year! the songs are beautiful in their complexity. they are quiet and subtle, but very forceful. they really get into your head, both musically as well as lyrically. threadgill's voice is so clean and airy and rich at the same time. the musicians on the album are true craftspeople. i've listened to it many times, and with each listening i get something new out of it.

Ms. Ortiz, on this her first CD, is a talented singer/songwriter/pianist. Each cut stands on its own. Her voice and piano skills are so fine. She demonstrates both tenderness and gutsy power. At times I think this music is meant for Broadway or as a movie soundtrack with some songs feeling nostalgic and other that hit hard! You will want to listen over and over to this one!
