Following on the heels of Deep Polka, Smithsonian Folkways' first record of indigenous Midwest polka bands, Deeper Polka goes even further in revealing the stylistic breadth of American polka music. The seven bands featured here run the gamut from the honky-style Polish of Stas Golanka and the Chicago Masters to the Norwegian polkabilly style of the Goose Island Ramblers. In between, the Croatian-style tamburitza (a fretted string instrument) of Jerry Grcevich, the Dutch-style concertina of Brian Brueggen, and Oren Tikkanen's Finnish-style mandolin help broaden the idea of how a polka should sound. The better-known Slovenian-style accordion (familiar for its association with Frankie Yankovic) of Nancy Hlad and the Czech-style accordion of Mark Vyhlidal round out the superb compilation. The polka remains a vital part of ethnic communities throughout America, and this package, complete with good-time music and appreciative booklet, helps explain why. --Wally Shoup

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Different Polka Sounds.......2006-06-09

I must disagree completely with the first customer review. This is a great CD that celebrates the wonderful diversity of Polka music. European polka music was not all "thump-thump polka rhythm" - there is great variation in Polka music from Bohemian to Bavarian to the Pommern lands to Norwegian and all lands in-between. This CD and it's predecessor, Deep Polka, are wonderful samplers of music from a previous time.

I grew up in an ethnically diverse area where there were Polish Polkas, German Polkas, Bohemian Polkas, Norwegian Polkas and other ethnic musicians I was not even aware of. These 2 CDs take me back to those times.

Both CDs have over 60 minutes of music. There are fast up-tempo (thump-thump polka rhythm) and medium rhythm and slower rhythm. Although, I do not feel at any time the music is too slow (as some Waltzs can be). You will hear some intrumental songs, some songs in English, some in German, some in Czech, some in Norwegian and a few other languages. It is almost like a Polka radio show with a variety of different Polka music.

If this is what you are looking for, I highly recomend it. If you are looking for one specific type of Polka, I suggest you keep looking.

2 out of 5 stars Where's that thump-thump polka rhythm?.......2002-07-31

Four of the artists on this CD, as well as the producers of this album and its predecessor, would do well to remember that we polka listeners like good strong thump-thump rhythm and bass. Stas Golonka, Nancy Hlad, and Brian and the Mississippi Valley Dutchmen keep this in mind very well. The rest of the selections vary from pleasant and relaxing to annoying. Have you ever been exposed to that rhythmless, melodyless, shrill music in Greek restaurants? That's what some of these tracks bring to mind. It's almost an a cappella sound, except that it doesn't always have vocals either. Please, guys, add some more bass and rhythm, so you could sound more like Stas, Nancy, and the Dutchmen. I might have given you 4 or 5 stars then.
