Following on the heels of Deep Polka, Smithsonian Folkways' first record of indigenous Midwest polka bands, Deeper Polka goes even further in revealing the stylistic breadth of American polka music. The seven bands featured here run the gamut from the honky-style Polish of Stas Golanka and the Chicago Masters to the Norwegian polkabilly style of the Goose Island Ramblers. In between, the Croatian-style tamburitza (a fretted string instrument) of Jerry Grcevich, the Dutch-style concertina of Brian Brueggen, and Oren Tikkanen's Finnish-style mandolin help broaden the idea of how a polka should sound. The better-known Slovenian-style accordion (familiar for its association with Frankie Yankovic) of Nancy Hlad and the Czech-style accordion of Mark Vyhlidal round out the superb compilation. The polka remains a vital part of ethnic communities throughout America, and this package, complete with good-time music and appreciative booklet, helps explain why. --Wally Shoup
