The veteran Brit-folk thrush's 1996 sophomore album is built around the impeccable taste in material and rich, weighty voice of its creator (think Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac). Backed by a sympathetic folk-rock crew that includes her old boss, Richard Thompson, Collister mixes a couple of her own compositions into a smartly sequenced set that includes tunes from Thompson, Sam Phillips, Gillian Welch, Anna McGarrigle, and Tom Waits. Worthy songs and a forceful, distinctive singer, when attached to the restrained, complementary arrangements found here, make for a winning combination. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and enchanting.......1999-09-12

Collister is at her finest on this CD. She produced the record herself, and delivers music of rare beauty. Regular musical collaborators Howard Lees on acoustic guitar and Rory McFarlane on bass are on top form. With the likes of Richard Thompson and Helen Watson also pitching in, the result is pure class.

Collister is a fine writer herself. "Kicking In My Stall," co-written with Helen Watson, is an instant classic. But usually she prefers to interpret songs by others. She chooses songs that tell stories, songs to engage the mind. She doesn't bother with the kind of pap that gets you into the singles charts.

As ever, her voice is remarkable and enchanting. Do yourself a favour and buy this exquisitely crafted record.
