Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
As a kid, all he ever wanted to do was escape, but people judge an escape artist harshly: "Is nothing good enough for you?" they ask. But it's not about that. Trevor Exter had an itch that needed scratching and so he ran and ran, soon finding out that the itch was on the inside, not on the outside...does this sound familiar?

The music is relevant. People said he was multi-talented but the truth is that he had a short attention span: cello was hard, so in order to escape he sat at the piano. But piano is hard too. Next came guitar.....Trev was able to avoid learning to actually play anything for years, just by finding something else. Anything else.

All the restlessness and unguided ambition brought him to lots of places, and then to New York City. He got lucky there and "worked" for a few years, then moved to London and got run over by a cement truck - amazingly without breaking a single bone. He spent 2004 and part of 2005 in Buenos Aires, where he recorded the album 637 Sounds.

This record features Trevor's innovative cello style as an accompaniment to his voice. At the end of the day, Trevor reconciled his love of the guitar and his skill as a cellist by playing the cello as if it were a guitar. Guitarists are impressed by how far he can "bend" notes on the cello, while cellists hear Trevor's sound with a mix of fear and fascination.

Trevor has worked with Gloria Deluxe, Nicole Renaud, De La Guarda, Gaby Kerpel, Shrine For The Black Madonna, Marc Anthony Thompson, Willi Jones, Toujours l'Amour, Philip Hamilton, Spottiswoode and his Enemies, Science For Girls, Novatribe, Changos, the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Poon. He likes his music chunky on a cheap cello. He hopes you will too.

Product Description
Trevor's windswept voice and unusual sidekick, a beat-up cello, take you on a journey into the less-traveled corners of roots and rootlessness. He practically violates the cello as he croons, whispers and screams an imaginative repertoire of instant classics.

It's a soaring trip into the unknown for a classically-weaned disco baby with a rock-n-roll soul.

From Brooklyn to Berlin, Britain, Brazil, Buenos Aires and back, this runaway visits us with a sexy original sound and songs. It's proof-positive that you don't have to do what they tell you, the customer isn't always right and that "rules" are for people who don't know any better.

The whispered message: unload your pride, preconceptions and any idea of the "correct". Give in to the sublime. It glides over a gently pulsing groove that's not quite bass, definitely not guitar - yet possesses a smooth resonance coveted by both.

4 out of 5 stars Always Room for Cello.......2006-11-16

Practically a member of the Spottiswoode family (although not quite an Enemy), Trevor Exter is an ex-expatriate who has returned from living in Brazil to bestow upon us this somewhat strange and lovely album. Perhaps the only cellist frontperson in what we'll loosely label pop music (did someone mention Rasputina?), Exter's sound differs from all others as a result. With the cello, fingerpicked and bowed, in all its righteous beauty, as the lead and occasionally only instrument on a track, the music is, at first, disconcerting and foreign. This is compounded by stark arrangements and atypical rhythms, chord voicings, and time changes. Thus, for your average pop-listening, guitar-bass-drums, verse-verse-chorus, 4/4 time, major-chord, meat-potato kind of guy, this cd takes some getting used to. The task is made much easier, though, by Exter's mellifluous voice, alluring, honey-coated with just the right touch of grit. His soaring vocals are frequently and eerily reminiscent of the late Jeff Buckley as are the complex and ethereal songs themselves.

4 out of 5 stars A very solid singer/songwriter album.......2006-01-14

I just got this album after seeing the artist play live with Philip Hamilton, in which capacity he was much more of an instrumentalist and sideman. So I was a bit surprised at 637 Sounds--it is not nearly so much a musical showcase (I was expecting something closer to a Victor Wooten album) as a collection of songs by a singer/songwriter who happens to play the cello in innovative ways.

To be honest, Mr. Exter is an unbelievable cellist and that is not seen on this album--but it isnt the point either. The songs are all well crafted and the album is very cohesive. It is a very chill album, very approachable and easy on the ears. There isnt a whole lot of variety or complexity, but for just sitting back and listening on a rainy day its really exactly what you want. I would definitely recommend 637 Sounds to any fan of singer/songwriter type music, and I would also keep an eye out for new levels of sophistication and groove on Mr. Exter's next album.
