Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Oh, but dear friends, you missed it if you weren't actually THERE at the Variety Playhouse, Little Five! Music to Savor - a feast for the ears at full room volume with nods and a wink or two and mostly appreciated by an auditoriumful of folks from all over.... . ..All of the original, still-living members had practiced and labored and now their efforts will not go unrewarded - I pray. Absent but surely honored in spirit was Harolde (with an 'e' now?) Kelling by Atlanta-based guitarista Bob Elsey of the Swimming Pool Q's. Bob also rendered yeoman service to the opening band, the redoubtable, ridiculous Thermos Greenwood - which Google! Good thing there was a brand-new ATM machine in the lobby of the old theater; I was able to cop a double disc CD limited edition pressing of the 1996 reissue of "Music to Eat" for a mere twenty.... from Glenn himself! The five fascimile autographs (from what would be the band's only moments together since 1973) on the back 'tank' cover are icing on the cake, as the creamy nugat filling is the EXTRA live stuff therein. Gooey sweetness from the Atlan'a Fest of 1970, and something special recorded at Emory University??? Be sure to visit Glenn Phillip's remarkable website and do as I do - begin collecting his oeuvre. See reviews of his other stuff; try to find the original vinyl if you must; add the CD reissue to your eBay wishlist, but by all means lobby your nearest friends and confidants and aficionadoes to get the concert tapes of this remarkable, moving show!
atlanta circa 1969.......2006-05-30
having grown up partly in the atlanta area in the late 1960s (my high school was located right across the street from the now legendary peidmont park), there were two 'local' bands of merit. both had a big area fan base and both were viewed pretty much equally by the atlanta hippies of 14th street fame. those bands were the duane era allman brothers and the hampton grease band. i remember seeing both on multiple occasions at piedmont park and other local venues. at one point, when the allmans were starting to garner national attention both groups played at the atlanta municipal auditorium. the underground newspaper (great speckled bird) was incensed that the allmans were paid much more money for that show- they felt that musically at least both bands were equal and some felt that HGB was the more creative group.
music to eat was the HGB's only release- a two record set on the columbia label- as pointed out by other reviewers, the second worse selling album in columbia's catalog.
the music here is a mix of dadaist lyrics, free jazz, psychedelic jam based rock, and two of the best southern based lead guitarists this side of duane and dickey. while bruce hampton's vocals are definitely an aquired taste (think captain beefhart for example), he has become a staple of the jam band set in recent years with his groups late bronze age (worth checking out), the aquarian rescue unit and the fiji mariners.
the 'songs' for the most part are quite long (clocking in at 18 plus minutes in some instances), but the jamming is quite focused- the guitars especially cover the gamut from jazz to punk to allmanesque rock (they were companion bands from the same geograhic region and BTW one of duane's favorites--he even convinced bill graham to book them at the fillmore east).
unfortunately the price here is exhorbitantly high, even given that this has become a collector's item in recent years. however, i have seen it on ebay for less than 20 dollars.
overall, for the more adventerous, those seeking something a bit different, guitar freaks, zappa/beefhart afficionados and also fans of the allmans, definitely worth a listen.
SPRAY PAINT!!!.......2005-11-08
Keep out of reach of children! Avoid breathing the vapors. Contents under pressure!
Completely insane. Wonderful.
Completely original and ahead of its time..........2005-01-05
The second-worst selling album in Columbia history (behind a yoga record) is one of the most original rock records you'll ever hear. It's hip, virtuosic, funny, rockin' and has a freshness that still holds up 30+ years after the fact.
I was given a vinyl copy of this in the late 80s as a gift. I had never heard of these guys and was quite intrigued with all of the artwork and the song titles. I sort of groaned at the length of the songs, some running 17 minutes, and thought this was probably another out-dated psych/ Dead-type jam record. Upon my first listen I was changed. The songs all have tons of character and narritives that are labourous and everything is surprisingly listenable, even with different sections and interludes and time signature changes, etc.
I would recommend this to anyone searching for something truly original. It's a great record, not just a novelty item infamous for its commercial underachievements.

Great deep tracks from a talented British band ! !.......1999-09-02
If you liked Joe Cocker with the Grease Band, you'll love this. Side A on vinyl was great. Tracks included the lyrical 'Let it be Gone' modulating into 'Willie and the Pig' a great little stomp number segueing into 'Laugh at the Judge', about the slickest, greasiest tune you will ever hear by any band, Guitar licks by Henry McCullough are crisp and well cleaned. Henry's credits include 'With a Little Help from My Friends' with Joe Cocker featuring Page and Winwood, the 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' tour and more recently Wings with McCartney. Long out of print, it is great to see this on CD. This was a fine, fine band by any standard.

Good laid back rockin' à la Neil Young And Crazy Horse.......2006-12-03
I heard of that band in the Ronnie Lane's Documentary The Passing Show. They toured with the Faces in the early 70's. I Found it on vinyl a week later at my local record store in Montreal. It is an awesome album. I just couldn't believe it. It's got that early Crazy Horse quality to it. Laid back Neil Young drum style with vocals reminiscent of Danny Whitten. Cool bluesy guitar riffin'. I learned recently that they were Joe Cocker's backin' band. Also I think the guitar player joined Wings (P.Mccartney) later on. Go for it, it's worth it.

The Grease Band.......2002-12-08
I have collected a vast collection of music from the time I first got into music in the 60s as a teenager. This is a very hard album to find, but is a must have for any 60s or 70s rock music lover.
Grease Band needs no "Help" from Friend Joe Cocker.......2001-12-30
The guys who helped Joe Cocker smoke Woodstock1 have put together their own bag of tricks on Leon Russell's Shelter label. From the first ethereal chords to the last pounding bass of 'Down Home Mama', this disc is a delight for fans of gospel, RnB, Rockabilly and good ol' southern boogie (these guys are Limeys, I swear). The lead picker went on to tour with McCartney and the bass player wrote 'I'm Sorry Babe' for the dance outfit Kokomo. A show opening for Rod, Ron & the Faces' 1st tour (70?, Municipal Auditorium, Atlanta) is still spoken of with awe by those who can remember! ...
