Though she grew up in Michigan and recently relocated to North Carolina, Annie Gallup first emerged as a singer/songwriter in Seattle, where she recorded both of her albums. Backbone features the sparkling guitar arpeggios and sprawling narrative lines similar to those of Patty Larkin and early Joni Mitchell. Though the songs are fleshed out by a tasteful folk-rock band, Gallup's soprano voice and acoustic guitar dominate the foreground. Gallup's melodies are often underwhelming, but she has a way with words. In both "Fight the Devil" and "The Girl with the Flyaway Hair," she addresses a male friend who has become obsessed with an exotic woman. All her best songs work similarly--seeming to head in one direction before taking an unexpected left turn. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars BONEY BONEY BONEY!!!.......2005-10-25

The first cd I bought by Boney James was Body Language; then I got Ride and Pure followed. I thought Body Language was cool but did not care for Ride and Pure because I thought it leaned really more toward r&b than jazz. I know a mixture of jazz and r&b is what Boney is about but just a little too much r&b. Now this cd (Backbone) is a serious smooth jazz cd. A must have for your collection. There are some mean grooves on here. When I first heard this cd I went (that's Boney James)? Man he really sounded great without all the singing. He can really play the sax. I hope he does more like this one and Seduction and Trust. I had to go back into time to get some real music from Boney James. This music is guaranteed to satisfy your smooth jazz appetite. When you get this one or these. ENJOY!!!

Excellent, Boney James has done it again. For those jazz lovers, its a must have CD. Like all the previous CD's, Boney has a way to move you while you listen to his music. This, like every other cd, sets the mood for enjoyment, and lots of loving.

"Backbone" is by far one of the sexiest and most sensual CD's I have ever heard. Every track drips with emotion and the song "Blue" is a veritable musical aphrodisiac. "Backbone" should be in everyone's Smooth Jazz collection.

This is a CD full of amazing lyrics. While listening to it is a little like hearing a dozen life stories crammed together, they're all fascinating and vivid stories, backed by just the right amount of (sparse) instrumental support. Highly original and highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Slic Patna.......2006-12-30

The production on this album was steller like that for example with the guitars. Got this when it came out and its still in rotation. Besides the single the other real banger is nine with the mutant, the song with cee lo, joi and dungeon ratts, I guess its kinda hit and miss with this dude in my opinion he's one of the best in DF guess outkast aquemini goodie mob world party agree this album sold well in the south. You get everyone from the Goodie on this along with Cool Breeze Calhoun Slimm Cutta, but dude carrys the album himself.

5 out of 5 stars What the F@$k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-17

this is the number one slept on album in the world, naw the universe..........for ya'll fools that say ya'll Dungeoun Family fans and you like Organized Noize...ya'll aint no real fans....b/c if you listen to what Backbone is saying he saying some gangsta a$$ lyrics over some fie a$$ beats....Potential buyers the album is bumpn' Intro:Outro

    1 out of 5 stars Straight Garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-27

I made the horrible mistake of buying this cd for the fact that it was produced by organized noize and backbone was part of the dungeon family. Dungeon Family + Organized Noize Production = Definite Hit right? WRONG!!! I'm a big fan of both parties, but I honestly don't know how or why they released this trash. Backbone is probably the weakest rapper I've ever heard in my life. He squeeks when he raps....literally squeeks. He sounds like he has indefinite hiccups. Seriously, I would place this album somewhere in the top 5 worst rap albums ever! I don't mean to be a hater, but I spent my hard earned cash on this garbage and ended up selling it for $1 at a pawnshop b/c NOBODY wanted to buy it from me. It's really that bad.......

5 out of 5 stars It Is, What Is;.......2005-04-06

If you like The Dungeon Family, the you will love this album. It's well worth every penny!!!

2 out of 5 stars In The Middle (2.5 Stars).......2004-05-05

I don't really know what to say about this album. On one hand, some songs are tight. On the other hand, it seems like a perfect waste of a good beat (see track #10). I bought this album because I like most of the Dungeon Family's work. The intro is kind of misleading because it's kind of hot, but most of the album isn't. Some songs play with the beat for so long that it makes you want to skip it (see track #11). Also, I didn't like how an old Outkast beat was jacked on track #9(from the Aquemini outro). Speaking of Aquemini, the hook from "Slump" was jacked too (on track #13). This album did make me wonder where Witchdoctor went. He's so underrated. If you're not a die hard southern rap fan, skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Rocking Blues at it's best!.......2003-02-18

This is one of my favorite Rockin' Blues CD's. It has great guitar, soulful singing, and gets your toe's a tapping! Great covers of Frank Zappa and Percy Mayfield too. Don't pass this up.

2 out of 5 stars Run Of The Mill Blues!.......2002-03-07

There are plenty of average blues bands on the scene that produce fairly good quality, sometimes enjoyable CD's and then there is BackBone Slip. It is hard to find any redeeming quality about this disc. The cover's of JB Lenoir's "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter", Ray Charles "A Fool For You" and Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City" are performed with absolutely no enthusiasm or feeling. You get the impression that these guys are merely going through the motions. The covers of Son Terry's "Walk On" and Joe William's "Big Legged Woman", while slightly better can only be described as mediocre. The CD includes two bonus songs only available on the CD, wow!. Those two songs are Frank Zappa's (that's right, Frank Zappa) "Trouble Everyday" and Percy Mayfield's "Dangerzone". both songs will make you wish you purchased the cassette. Blue Wave has a stable of talented musicians. Unfortunately, this group is not one of them. Two stars is being generous!

        Album Description

"Tappin'" is an album whose stories spring from the east slope of the Rockies, in and adjacent to Glacier/Waterton International Peace Park. Six new songs, two remakes of "classic" Gladstone and a traditional Blackfeet drumming song round out the CD, the ninth of Jack Gladstone's career, and his fourth project with Lloyd Maines, producer of Dixie Chicks' Grammy Winner 2003 "Home" album.

In this album, Jack has fused local legend and history with events and issues encompassing global experience. Its focus, in both vision and breadth, concerns the human condition - past, present and future.

The title cut celebrates the kinship of the planet's mountain peoples to the earth. "It rocks, says Jack "about as hard as its dobro and saxophone (the lead instruments) will allow."

Three cuts on the album are more geared toward the younger set, but should be enjoyed by adult children as well. These include stories about "Napi" the trickster. As with all Napi stories, there are elements of deceit, humor, greed and "just desserts" woven within.

War, and its consequences on our young men, is addressed in Sometimes Eagles. A haunting cameo guest appearance is made on the album by retired Air Force trumpeter Sergeant J. Constantine of Great Falls.

September 11 spawned a torrent of poetry and song. Jack assumes a reflective position in the album's finale, Letter to the World. Letter is a call to transcend economics, politics and religion to find the bond of our common humanity.

This album is the tightest and best produced work of Jack's career. The rhythmic foundation with players from Montana, keeps the organic base intact. The album is well crafted, musically and lyrically - the dividend of experience and alliance with the best musicians and engineers available.

Barrett and his group have made an instrumental album that is an homage to those great 60's bluenote artists like Lou Donaldson and Jimmy McGriff.Barrett blows incredible harp throughout, sometimes sounding like Coltrane in his sheets of sound period,The band and songs are all fantastic. If Medeski Martin and Wood teamed up with Charlie Hunter to back up little Walter jonesin' on the Trane this is what it would sound like.Major Bash and Where green is blue are good tracks to start with but the whole CD is just as amazing. My favorite harmonica CD in years.
