"When No One's Watching", the debut CD from fresh, homespun new talent Kevin Briody is aptly named - for now. With such a strong debut, it is doubtful that "no one will be watching" for very long.

Briody's work has a spareness that is refreshing in this day of over-produced, over-electric music - and that's just on the folk scene. Hard to categorize - Americana Folk might be the closest - this collection digs deep into the everyday incidents that take on broader meaning with the passage of time.

The title track to the album is a successful take on the maxim that character is defined as "what you do when no one is watching". You can almost smell the candy mixed with the newspaper and magazine smells in the musty, wood floored, candy shop. You can picture Mr. McVeil, with his white v-neck tee shirt and tired eyes, an ex-con doling out candy and life's little lessons to the youngster at the heart of this song.

This album speaks from the heart and highlights the simple yet profound things in life - a sandlot baseball game, a porch rocker, and a dog at your feet. Rest assured, people will be watching, and listening. (David Brown, The Scene)

Pleasant uneventful house.......2001-11-15

Jori is quite a prolific producer of house. Unfortunately it sounds like it. The beat generators and bass effects use sounds from the late 80's and need to be updated. All in all the sound is pleasant but nothing ground breaking.

This is the best album from Jori Hulkkonen. "Whispers" is one of the nicest electro-inspired tracks i've heard! This is not a "party-house" album but that's not always what you want. If you want smooth melodies and nice samples - buy this one! This is music that affects your feelings. I put this album on my top 20 list.. ever!

Handsome house music from the North........2001-03-28

On his third major release on F-Comm Hulkkonen takes his music more to house. On his previous albums there was more techno-vibes, but now his music has developed to another stage. The album consists of 11 great tracks with many flavours of house and more, including the beautiful single "Wanna Do You" and the hit track from 1997 "Let Me Luv U". So if you like French or Scandinavian house sounds get this album. You wont be disapointed.

More magic from the Suomi genius.......2001-03-11

Jori Hulkkonens music is without comparison the best in my cellection of house. In this album he experiments a little with other styles such as electro, but the production is still gentle and sofisticated, and the Hulkkonen magic is always there. I especially like the way he accomplishes high sofistication with a minimum of components. There are no trendy sounds or cheap effects to disturb the graceful, cozy and somewhat melancholic felling of the album as a whole. Some may say that Hulkkonen's version of house sounds a little old (mid 90's), but I'd say they've just misinterpreted the minimalistic method in his composing and production.
