1 out of 5 stars turned off!.......2007-01-15

Bought this CD after reading the rave reviews. Not what I look for in music. This group seems to be more about sex appeal than music. More about production than real music--one can barely notice that there is a string quartet playing. Could only stand to listen to this once-could find nothing of interest. One heck of a photo shoot, though. SOmeone must have had a field day with that. This CD seems to be more for the sake of some sexy pictures than its music. A real turn-off.

5 out of 5 stars Bond Shines Another Day.......2006-06-11

Fans only had to wait two years for Bond to punch out another Classical/Pop/Dance album. The finished product is some of the string quartet's best work. With the return of violins, a viola, and a cello, these instruments provided the basis of Bond's Classical music sound. But to acheive the full sound of Bond, the electronic instrumention for Pop/Dance music returned as well. This time around, Bond dove further into the Classical genre and arranged pieces to match their own sound. With a name like Bond, the string quartet also performed their version of a James Bond Theme entitled "Bond On Bond", and it landed them a spot to the score and soundtrack for the film The World Is Not Enough. With the release of this remarkable record, it was clear that Bond and their new form of Classical music would not diminish.

Stand out tracks include:
"Allegretto"
"Shine"
"Fuego"
"Speed"
"Gypsy Rhapsady"
"Bond On Bond"

5 out of 5 stars A Good Band.......2006-01-05

It is a good party music. All are very talented individuals. Everyone has their own taste of music, and Bond is mine.

5 out of 5 stars Shine On!.......2005-06-02

This is the album that I really liked. Although I downloaded it, I also play this one nonstop. I love the whole CD, and that's rare for me!

The album is liked so much in my house that my mother and father take it from me--and I recently had to make copies of the CD so they can play their own!

"Shine" is a great addition to your collection if you love Bond, no doubt about it.

Read my review of Lara St. John's "Re: Bach" album and substitute "Bond" where it says "Lara St. John."

5 out of 5 stars The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04

Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Insipid lyrics-just what I wanted!.......2001-01-27

I received this CD several days ago and have just ordered two more copies of it so I can play it in the car and living room as well as on the computer. I also have "Vienna, City of My Dreams" sung by Placido Domingo in German and love them both. Many years ago before I ever knew who Richard Tucker was, I bought his record, "Vienna, My City of Dreams" with those English lyrics-I wore out three copies of that record and am finally getting it on CD-regardless of the language he sings in, Richard Tucker's music is a treasure and how wonderful that it will never be silenced!!

5 out of 5 stars An Operetta Gem.......2000-06-29

For those of us who have an unbridled passion for operetta, this CD is a treasure. The focus here is Richard Tucker. Fourteen of the 22 tracks are by him. There is much love and affection in these readings. The english translations are just fine. Original languages are just as confectionary in their own tongue. This is part of the magic--part of the fantasy. I would like to have seen this as a single vehicle for Mr. Tucker. The other selections were extracted from full production highlights from other albums and were transition works from operetta to American musical comedy--Song of Norway, Show Boat and Kismet. While nice, they do not necessarily qualify as essential operetta. My only real concern with the collection is Mr. Tucker's use of falsetto for the concluding high note on four selections. This was particularly disconcerting in the revered Siecynski favorite, VIENNA, MY CITY OF DREAMS. The transition to the high note resembled a yoddle. He hits the same notes so beautifully in the other numbers. But what the heck, you still have 10 other solos to treasure. An investment well worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Singing Sabotaged by Insipid Lyrics.......2000-02-27

Kitch!

Wonderful singing, really wonderful, but 12 (of 22) of the songs are marred by the insipid lyric translations of Merl Puffer and Deena Cavalieri. Unfortunately, the singers sing so well that you hear every word with crystal clarity. Here are some lines: Darling trust in me, for I'll always be a loving subject waiting your command...for a love sincere, conquers every fear...champagne will flow, and our hearts will glow...social pressures I faithfully shun, I defy, those who pry, boredom exists everywhere, and I'll escape from it's snare...ah, you see, what love can be...I languish as I linger, from love's fragile bloom, if you'll but raise a finger, I'll clime to your room, the night is growing colder, the world is growing older, don't turn an icy shoulder. I am no expert on poetry but I think that stuff is awful. If these lyrics won't bother you, these are beautifully sung operetta/show tunes. Tucker and Della Casa are fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars An enchanting disc.......1999-04-15

An enchanting disc with Richard Tucker in quite unbelieveably fine voice, even purists will quickly adjust to the slightly cute "English lyrics"

The great surprise of this disc is that it is sung in English using slightly suspect English lyrics, rather than translations it seems, of the non-American works. Mostly it does not matter much, occasionally they are an improvement or even enlighten the music, such as Lehar's "I have been in love before" from his Paganini. In other cases they seem quite unnecessary or simply wrong and difficult to sing to boot. Given that Tucker also sometimes applies an accent that seems vaguely Viennese and it might seem to add up to a recipe for disaster. Not so at all. The voice wins you over within minutes and the recording and remastering were clearly undertaken with equal and genuine affection.

Then there are the pieces sung by other than the tenor, such as Lisa Della Casa singing Vilja and the Merry Widow Waltz, once again in English, with her individual timbre complete with her usual melancholy tones plus simply exquisite top notes, no strain at all. Della Casa has a distinct and charming (natural, of course) Swiss-German accent mainly evident in the Waltz she sings & hums with John Reardon.

In between we find Tucker singing one of the sacrileges of the re-constructed English lyrics, Zeller's "Roses from Tyrol", it misses the originals dialectic charm, "Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tyrol" does not translate somehow as "In the Tyroler lover knows the special promise of a rose for every blosom that you send swears that your love will never end.......". But the singing is so lovely and the last top note bewitchingly floated you forget the quibbles.

The tempos are leisurely but never quite pure schmalz, even in the Grieg' Song of Norway.

The worst lyric irritation I found to be Heuberger's "Im Chambre separee" as "in our seculded rendevue." English instead of German and French as well as being sung by a tenor, for which it may well have been written but here it lacks the soprano accompaniment. I prefer this as two soprano voices in the original sprachen. The text here really is not well matched to the notes though Tucker fits the syllable's across octaves where necessary, swallowing others that can't be fitted in. Again he finishes on an amazing high note floated literally into the distance.

I am amazed how Allers & Tucker make the Romberg piece sound like an operratic version of Rawhide. I adore Hadley & Swenson in "Stranger in Paradise" as well as the others, especially the rare Della Casa and as I type this I am listening to it all on the computer's CD player for the N'th time since I unwrapped my considerably less than 10 bucks worth.

Recommended with reservations on the lyrics but not the extent of content. For purists it will provide many hours of unravelling fact from fiction whilst producing a glow of well being in the process.

John Lurie has never minded throwing curveballs at crowds, and his filmmaker pal Jim Jarmusch has made a career of doing so. When they got together for Lurie to act in and compose music for Stranger than Paradise (and, of course, Down by Law), the combo worked like magic. Lurie's aloof distance on screen was well matched with his own music for string quartet, much of it crossing wires between the eerie and the aloof. There's a sense of strangeness in the music, played wonderfully by the Paradise Quartet, with Eugene Moye eking every burnished texture under the sun from his cello. When it comes time to tackle the 16-minute Resurrection of Albert Ayler, the Paradise Quartet's violinists Jill Jaffee and Mary Rowell help set an atmosphere not unlike Ayler's Live in Greenwich Village band. With two percussionists, a kit drummer, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Arto Lindsay on guitar, and himself on alto and soprano saxes, Lurie imagines Ayler's supersimple melodic sensibility correctly, as a launching pad for improvisation and expression. That said, Resurrection doesn't ultimately soar like Ayler but instead generates drifting clouds of low strings and percussion. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strings that tell of sad things..........2006-03-26

When it comes to atmosphere, the sad, sometimes rainy soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch' excellent indy movie "Stranger than paradise" has it all, allthough it's only fair to say that it's a short and minimalistic experience: only 20 something minutes long. Maybe therefor the album has a wild, chaotic musical set piece called "The ressurrection of Albert Ayler" as a bonus. But the twenty minute score for "Stranger than paradise" is perfect nontheless. A string quartet plays John Lurie's understated tunes. The composer has an eye for detail and touching notes, just the way he acts in the movie itself: a flinch, a sigh, a gesture often is enough and all is filled with a feel of "real", of "genuine" and that's the strength of both the movie and its music.

John Lurie's second musical collaboration with Jim Jarmusch (if we skip his saxophone playing cameo appearance in "Permanent vacation" for a minute) is "Down by law" and it's both sad and good that he didn't repeat himself. The score for "Down by law" is more experimental, more filled with little pieces of wickedness en weirdness. It's also shorter than a regular soundtrack, but this one too has another Lurie piece, "Variety", as a bonus.

"Mystery train" is, to round up things, the third and last Lurie / Jarmusch collaboration. Because this movie has some Elvis themes in its core, the strings are replaced by electric guitar. But that doesn't mean that the intimacy of the first two Lurie soundtracks is gone: Lurie draws from his electric guitar the same atmosphere as before, giving us hints of saddness, loneliness and some "plingplungs" of deadpan humor.

P.S. John Lurie directed a t.v. series called "Fishing with John" for which he also made the music. One of his guests is Jim Jarmusch, so maybe, with the release of this cd, we have a Lurie/Jarmusch quartet anyway.

5 out of 5 stars This does not have "I put a spell on you", but..........2003-07-22

it does have great Viola Cello and Violin music by The Paradise Quartet. I love the sound of the cello and was very impressed when Lou Reed used it in his "Street Hassle" album.
Since I have this on a cassette, I tend to only listen to the Paradise Quartet side, and not the Resurrection of Albert Ayler side. But just for that side it was a worthy buy for me. It's great music to read by...or just daydream.
I loved the movie, have seen it many times and it's a great background music for my quiet moods.

5 out of 5 stars comparable to the film.......2003-03-20

Just like the film in terms of originality. this music stands on it's own away from the film but it's association doesn't hurt either. John Lurie is truly an underrated musician and actor. I appreciate the care that Jim Jarmusch uses in selecting music for his films. Highly Recommended! I put a spell on you!

3 out of 5 stars Different concerts, different quality.......2005-10-16

As a fan of Paradise Lost, I didn't hesitate when I bought the live album of one of my favorite bands. Being honest, I cannot give five stars to this Cd, because the material belong to different concerts without the quality I expected. The first part, from a 1992 concert, are (live versions of) four songs from the album "Shades of God" and have poor sound quality (limitations of recording on the stage); also the voice of Nick Holmes (at that time) hadn't the power of latter albums. The second part (another four songs, now from 1995) improved the sound and Nick had a better performance. Being the "Gothic" album my Paradise Lost's favorite, the third part (10 songs from 1993)is the best of the CD: nice recording, powerful vocals, excellente selection of songs. "Live at the BBC" represents the first record of the Paradise Lost live performances, so I expect one or two more live albums with recent material and much better sound.

4 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost live! A superb CD........2003-10-31

The only reason I give this CD four stars instead of five, is that the latter half of the CD is a better compilation of material than the first. This is an excellent CD nonetheless. I wonder though, if live performances from later in their career will be recorded onto compilations like this one? To get to the point, this is a good CD overall, and a nice introduction into Paradise Lost's older material slanted more toward the doom metal genre as opposed to the lighter Gothic Metal recorded later in their career. Paradise Lost is one of my favorite bands (I've seen them in concert with Opeth), and they deserve more attention. This is the fourth CD of theirs I have bought so far, and I am only more convinced over the years of how diverse and talented this Gothic Metal act is. I recommend this CD to any metal fan interested in one of the most influential metal bands that explores the darker side of metal. It is a real treat.

4 out of 5 stars Overall great disc.......2003-10-12

I've been a fan of Paradise Lost for roughly 4 years, and have heard all of their songs, and I must say this is quite an interesting compilation. I bought the album confused thinking it was just a bunch of different live shows at different venues. No, this is a compilation of some of the most raw Paradise Lost songs you can find, which definitly isn't a bad thing. These recordings are not just rehashes of their album counterparts, these versions represent the way Paradise Lost was meant to be heard.

This cd has actually 3 parts, Rock show 20th November, Rock Show 95, and Rock Show in Concert. The first is very nicely recorded, for its age, that is. "As I Die" has always been one of my favorite songs, and this version confirms that, as it is even more heavy and when he sings As I Die in this version his voice reverbs.

The Second Portion, Rock Show 95, is slightly less of sound quality, but shows much more underproduced versions of songs from the Draconian Times, and shows how Paradise Lost have progressed over the years from an underproduced (or garage sounding) metal sound to a very refined sound (hear their latest album Symbol of Life and hear what I mean). Something to note about this portion of the disc, is the inclusion of "Sweetness" a somewhat difficult to find song by the band, and the fact they included a Rock Show version of this song makes it even more rare.

The third portion, In Concert, is Paradise Lost in their prime, especially if you enjoy their heavier days of Gothic. You hear the crowd rawr and want to jump up and shout along with the rest of them and sing the lyrics.

Overall I give this cd 4 stars, not a 5 simply for the fact that Rock Show 95 is a bit of lesser quality sound compared to the rest of the disc. This disc is a must have for any Paradise Lost fanatic or metal lover alike. Oh and don't forget to check out their latest "Symbol of Life."
