Jam Nation hero Ben Harper tones down his lap-slide guitar flash in favor of the holy spirit for this blend of originals and gospel classics, his first full-length album with the historic singing group. They've worked together before, on the Blind Boys' excellent Higher Ground and Spirit of the Century, but here the pairing that Harper has termed "a spiritual soul movement" sounds like an outright tent-revival mission. His fevered wah-wah strutting and sweet high voice take their places in the chorus alongside the raw-throated howl of Blind Boys leader Clarence Fountain and his fellow bass George Scott, who plead for salvation like powerful old lions on "Take My Hand." The group's alto, Jimmy Carter, sails over the funky, hiccupping blues beat put down by Harper's Innocent Criminals on the classic "Satisfied Mind." The best cut may be Harper's "Picture of Jesus," a country-music-informed adventure in old-school church harmonizing with the passionate power to touch souls. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual .......2007-04-06

I've listened to this CD many times, never get tired it, and find it esspecially uplifting listened to on a Sunday Morning, Amen!

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-02-15

Ben Harper, the Road Warrior in the flesh lays down some truly spiritual and inspirational music with some of the greats of the Gospel world. All it took was one listen and I was hooked. Easily the most accessible and easy to listen to of Harper's work. Fans of gospel, country, alternative rock and blues-rock alike should definitely pick this one up. The vocals, especially on "Wicked Man" might even conjure some memories of Little Feat for some. Great album. The world needs more like this one.

4 out of 5 stars HOLY moly this is good.......2005-09-30

What a combo! Ben Harper, road warrior, jam master and granola hero, teams up with the ageless grammy award winning gospel warriors.....this has the potential for 2 outcomes: 1) something that just flat out won't work or 2)something very very special.

Well.....it is option #2!!!!

With old southern standards and brand new originals, the crew reaches deep into gritty southern soul roots and captures the ghosts of the past. You can feel the emotion and passion in each song. You almost think you are in a tiny church somewhere smack in the middle of the Mississippi delta!

I recommend this for any lovers of gospel music. I also do the same for any lovers of classic sould r&b.

4 out of 5 stars Funky Gospel.......2005-09-02

Bought this CD because I heard the track "Satisfied Mind" on public radio and just had to have it!! This CD is well worth the money just for this track alone. The rest of the CD is great if you are into the origins of funk. Some of the tracks get a little too Gospel for my taste. There are some sweet guitar solos and truly excellent blues riffs scattered throughout the more upbeat tracks. I would definitely suggest buying this CD after buying it I am very intersted in checking out more Ben Harper and more Blind Boys of Alabama fare.

4 out of 5 stars 4-1/2 stars -- Religious, nutritious.......2005-07-20

This is my first time picking up a Ben Harper record, as well as a Blind Boys of Alabama record. To me, Ben Harper has always been talented, and the Blind Boys of Alabama have always been known for making great songs (STUPID videos, but great songs). But now Ben's funky, light rock and the Blind Boys' spiritual flavor joined forces on There Will Be a Light, and as another reviewer put it, this marriage works.

The traditional "Mother Pray" is definitely a highlight, as well as their cover of Bob Dylan's "Well, Well, Well". Other songs not to be missed are "Church On Time", the title track, and "Picture of Jesus". And when the religious aspect is rather oblique, it's still impressive, as evidenced by the single "Wicked Man".

Even the instrumental track "11th Commandment" is good. Basically, There Will Be a Light is an album that should satisfy contemporary fans and gospel fans alike, and while you might not want to pay full price for a 38-minute album (although somehow it seems longer than that), you'll definitely get your money's worth if you pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Harper's best.......2004-05-16

Billy Harper's best recording is an LP called 'Capra Black' which includes his compostions such as 'Cry of Hunger' and also a mixed choir to very good effect. Harper's unmistakable sound and Coltrane' s power are all there. Unfortunately as is often the case, the people who own the master tapes have no idea of what they've got , and don't release it on CD. In the meantime 'Soul of an Angel' and 'Somalia' are both must haves.

4 out of 5 stars Coltrane-derived but exciting.......2002-04-26

Though the titles of the tunes are Neo-Coltrane New-Age Ecstatic ('Thine Is the Glory'), and the liner notes are full of references to the divine inspiration of this music (do inspired musicians really have to tell you that their art comes from God?), this is nevertheless exciting music. The piano (Francesca Tanksley) is a faithful mcCoy Tyner sound-alike who sets up interesting modal riffs for Harper's Coltrane-derived sheets of sound. The surging poly-rhythms of drummer Newman Baker are pure Elvin Jones. This music descends directly from the great Coltrane quartert of the early '60's. When you get beyond that fact, you can really enjoy the passion of these fine musicians, who must nevertheless someday find a more original voice. Harper has evolved the Coltrane style into something close to originality: tighter than the Master, with a bright brittle timber like Michael Brecker's. Trumpeter Eddie Henderson joins the quartet on three selections, and one of the cuts ('Let All the Voices Sing') also features a French horn. These ensembles clearly extend the sound beyond Coltrane territory. Although his music is derivitive, Billy Harper is far more exciting and adventurous than most of today's tenors, who are playing it safe by keeping one foot in the Smooth Jazz market. Harper- along with David Murray, Jeff Coffin, and Bennie Wallace- are tenors who deserve a wider audience: they stay inside the bounds of straight-ahead bop, yet they haven't sold out to the smoothies. Buy their recordings!

5 out of 5 stars Music for your spirit, music for your soul!.......2000-09-13

The latest offering from Billy Harper, "Soul of An Angel", is music for the soul. These wonderful sounds will take you places. Some familiar, but from a different view. Others unknown, but you will welcome the discovery of pure warmth and happiness. After more than twenty dedicated listenings, I still find new sounds and ideas coming through with the power and intensity that is representative of Billy's playing. Are there my favorites? Can't say because the music changes with the experiences of living each day. I'm hoping you will treat yourself to this CD, take time out, and in a place of quietude, make these gems your own. You will find that the soul these stellar musicians are praising about...is yours.

5 out of 5 stars Peace, Love and Hurricane.......2000-08-08

New CD of Billy Harper "Soul Of An Angel"... This is Something I really like and value. Listening this music you can feel Peace and Love inside You, and in the same time you feel Billy's emotions coming through his tunes - and sometimes it's like a Hurricane...so mighty and uncontrollable.

Well... and now I'm happy to inform that Billy Harper Fan Club in Latvia is open!!!

5 out of 5 stars Billy Harper is in top form on this one!.......2000-07-13

You can't get an idea of the power and majesty of these songs by listening to the clips, as his intros are anywhere from one to four minutes. But what great songs these are. There really aren't many jazz musicians of this stature who can and do write such beautiful melodies, and fill them out with such outstanding arrangements. Not that Mr. Harper doesen't do standards justice, such as on 'It Came Upon A Midnight Clear' on this release, and the magical 'My One And Only Love' from "If Our Hearts Could Only See". It's just that the wonderful melodies of the title song, 'Credence' and especially 'Thine Is The Glory' are new and original and meaningful.

All of these pieces are surrounded by hard and taut playing by the other band members. Francesca Tanksley, who has been playing piano with Mr. Harper for more than 15 years, turns in a blistering performance on 'Thine Is The Glory' that just about makes me weep with joy.

This music is deceptively soft-on-the-edges jazz which is familliar with the entire history of the music, but isn't happy to just sit by and reminisce. This is music that is ready to tell you something new about yourself. Are you ready?

5 out of 5 stars An AntiWar Masterpiece.......2002-08-26

Tippett and Britten were composers who, though very different in temperment and style, had many interests in common. One of the overiding concerns with both composers was the moral response to war and it's horrors. For Britten, the War Requiem and Owen Wingrave are his very clear moral response to war. Tippet, in his fashion is much more psychological in this work, which must rank as one of Tippett's best and most powerful operatic statements.

King Priam is a dramatic tour de force. Based on the Illiad as seen through the eyes of the Trojans, the work is a meditation on the inevitability of fate in mass movements like war. Priam, though illdisposed to the war, is unable to stop or control it as it takes both of his sons, his kingdom and then finally his own life. He emerges as a figure of moral power and grandeur, but ultimately as impotent and tragic. This libretto is one of Tippett's best and most clear statements.

Musically, Priam is a powerhouse, inaugurating Tippett's second major style. Priam is constructed in a mosaic style. Small chamber groups of instruments with defined musical content are assigned to characters. As the work develops, these small groups combine and recombine in a shifting maze of patterns that seems to endlessly reinvent itself. The music starts out as largely tonal, but the tonality breaks down as Fate takes over and dooms the Trojans. The work is never serial, but it takes an almost Bergian view of tonality, sometimes more and sometimes less tonal as the dramatic situation warrants. The vocal lines are mostly declaimed, but with moments of lyricism that are unfogettable, such as Priam's first aria, A Father and a King, or the beautiful scene between Priam and Achilles in the third act. And Achilles war cry at the end of act two is bone chilling!

This is a great performance of this piece. Many of the singers originated the roles and sing them with power and authority. Phillip Langridge is terrific as Paris. Robert Tear is a marvelous Achilles. David Aetherton conducts this difficult score with precision and a fine ear for balances.

This is a profound opera by a major 20th century composer. If you like Britten, you should own this as well. It is increasingly looking like Tippett's masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Visceral power & beauty coupled with stunning performances!!.......2001-06-13

I bought this on a whim, having heard only the slightest bit of Tippett's orchestral music and none of his operas. I expected the music to be "difficult," and the performances stilted, but I was oh so wrong! Yes, this is definitely late 20th century music -- often dissonant and atonal, but it is utterly beautiful, emotionally moving music. I'm a huge fan of Britten's operas, and judge all modern opera composers by his standards, and (pardon my gushing) Sir Michael is more than up to the challenge. First of all, he takes on the daunting task of adapting the Iliad into a opera libretto and manages to compress the drama beautifully into 3 acts that tell the story imaginatively, comprehensively and in a wholly theatrical manner. Second, he uses the music to heighten the sense of character by giving each persona a unique style of vocal line and orchestration (yes, this is what all composers do, or try to do, but Tippett succeeds in a way few others do). Several of the characters are accompanied by solo instruments (bravura parts of concerto-like difficulty performed brilliantly) -- Achilles by solo guitar, Helen by solo cello, King Priam by violin, etc. Three characters form a sort of Greek chorus who comment on the action and bring a sense of questioning morality to the whole.

All of the solo singers are astutely cast and sing with amazing power. Standouts (difficult to single out any of them, they're all so brilliant): Phillip Langridge is first-rate as Paris, Priam's second son -- he sings with enormous power and pathos at the same time. Felicity Palmer is velvety sex personified as Helen. Norman Bailey as Priam has a raw edginess to his sound, which lends such a sense of reality to a man pushed to the edge by fate and his warring sons. The London Philharmonia gives a virtuoso performance, led sensitively and intelligently by David Atherton. The digital sound is crystal clear and beautifully engineered: the sound couldn't be better live at the Met! Take a chance on this one, and enter into an operatic world you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most easily grasped of modern operas.......1999-02-27

Contemporary opera was never the same after King Priam, a suitable irony given that the Opera is perhaps the most easily grasped by the listening public of the 5 Tippett Operas. Even so, the "crisis of King Prian" stylistically and emotionally is the germ-seed for the eccentrism yet to come in "The Knot Garden", "The Ice Break", and "New Year". Tippett's theme is the futility of choice and the nature of the impact of choice on humanity in the micro-sphere of the individual and the macro-sphere of the community and history. Tippett's unusual yet perfectly conceived recasting of the Iliad from the Trojan persepctive does more than summarize plot, but pauses to comment on the universal human potential implicit therein. A must-buy for Tippett fans and for anyone who likes opera, Greek Mythology, classical music, or a good story.

wow this cd is great. I just listened to it for the very 1st time and i must say that it really blew my mind. i only brought this cd JUST BECAUSE ms. conya doss is on it and she really puts it down with the remake of Norman Connor's classic, starship. There are other standout tracks on this album also. Andre ward shines on 2 of the tracks, All i ever ask, and if u leave me now, which has a smooth jazzy sound 2 it. This is a cd to listen to if you are in the mood 4 some lovin, or if u are at home chilling out. This cd put my mind at ease, especially since i can't stop thinking about the man i am falling in love with in my A&P class. the entire cd is great from start 2 finish and is sure not to disappoint. Here Harper extends the post-Coltrane idiom with a comfort that makes him Coltrane's heir apparent. This music and this group is "Tight" with a capital "T". It is spiritual, intense, intellectual, enjoyable and recognizable as extending an important genre. The trail blazer of this idiom is Harper's "Love on the Sudan" (with this same group) which is difficult to find. In fact I am still searching for it.
