Album Description
The acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of Jellyfish, Moog Cookbook, and Imperial Drag wrote every song, played every instrument, and sang every note on this debut, an album that blends colorful melodies with rich harmonies and creative arrangements into pure pop perfection. "The disc is packed with breezy sonic confections that brazenly exhibit their creator's fondness for Paul McCartney, XTC, Queen, Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, and others in the pop pantheon" - Future Music Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
critics of the vocals should use proper perspective.......2007-04-16
Previous reviews do a terrific job covering this wonderful album. I just had to submit a short comment to those negatively criticizing the lead vocals by Mr. Manning. Yes, Andy Sturmer has an absolutely remarkable voice. Yes, it is a tremendous disappointment to all of us who adore Mr. Sturmer's vocals and what Jellyfish was that we've heard relative silence since Spilt Milk. But this album by Manning is a gift for the Jellyfish fan and the fan of simply good music. It has that unique Jellyfish creative magic in it. The vocals are good, obviously not Sturmer, but still good. I think they do the songs justice. I will enjoy it for the great album it is. That does not diminish in any way my hope for a Manning - Sturmer reunion, which is as fervent than ever. Let's hope this album sparks something.
Wonderful.......2007-01-10
Anyone who loves well-crafted songs, lush vocals, and catchy hooks will love this album. It's where Jellyfish would've gone if they hadn't broken up.
If you can ignore the lyrics, you may like this CD.......2006-11-20
The words to these songs are almost unlistenable, really. If you can ignore them, then many of the tunes will carry the record. Dragonfly and Appleby are lyrically annoying since they come from a guy who was in Jellyfish.
Dear Roger, please collaborate next time. Someone else need to write the words.
"DRAGONFLY" lyrics:
Dragonfly what are you made of
Are you made of love
Sent from above
To me?
Can this really be?
Oh Dragonfly now you're in my dreams
And though you seem
So far
You're my shining star.
Dragonfly can you be for real? Every glance I steal leads me on
Dragonfly your kiss divines I'm dying so sweetly
Dragonfly where can I find you? I've searched everywhere and still no sign of you this just can't be true
So veiled in this dream - you're a work of art that breaks my heart in two
What am I to do?
Dragonfly can you be for real? Every glimpse I steal leads me on. Dragonfly your kiss divines I'm dying so sweetly
Beware how they warned a god could fall for you
Something a spy should never do
.....
"APPLEBY" LYRICS:
Appleby where are you now
I've looked around the grounds but can't find you somehow
Appleby to lost and found
Appleby take off that dress
Hurry you'll make us late our annual game of chess
Appleby I'm not impressed

Pop Rock Gem!.......2006-10-28
It continues to amaze me to find "new" musicians who record in bedroom studios all across the country. Everyone was amazed when Craig Chaquico pulled this off, Roger takes it to the next level. The closest event I can recall to this release is Steely Dan's 1972 "Can't Buy a Thrill" that put pop/rock on its ear. The influences are many and varied...Beach Boys, Beatles, Osmonds, Neil Sedaka, Jimmy Webb, The Who, Styx, Yes, Chicago, Alan Parsons, ELO/Jeff Lynn, Astrud Giberto, Wondermints, Burt Bacharach, Supertramp, 60's Brit Pop, the list goes on... As for Roger's vocal ability, he's no Bocelli, but he is better than 90% of the front men out there. He has a unique "honey" styled voice with a smoothness not often heard these days (think Joseph Williams, David Pack, Donnie Osmond, Gerry Beckley). He doesn't try to imitate anyone, and has learned to be comfortable using his instrument as intended and well trained. Primarily a keyboardist, his chops on guitars and drums are commendable as well. Can't think of enough good things to say about this artist. Not every cut is excellent, but eight of eleven are standouts and addictive. The three deleted cuts from Solid State Warrior make for eleven very strong songs that could all be at home on the top 40...during some point of time. Buy this CD Now!
Please take the time to read it........2006-10-07
Song writing - 5 stars all the way Roger never a doubt.
Here is the thing and it's just one mans opinion. You don't have a strong enough voice to sing lead vocals. Your strength in harmony is undeniable, your strength in song writing is undeniable, your skill as a musician is second to none. You just don't have what is needed to fill the role of lead vocalist. That is the only thing that will keep this release from the ears of all who unfortunately will never get to appreciate it.

Customer Reviews:
Good music, bad voice.......2007-01-05
I have been a Jellyfish fan for quite some time and was really excited about this album. I really wish i would have listened to it before purchacing though. I agree with a previous review in that the music is great but I just cant get past Roger's voice and cheesy lyrics. I listened to it once and was instantly dissapointed. He really should have recruited Andy for the vocals. No one sings like him. I'll guess I'll just have to keep dreaming Jellyfish will reunite.
FINALLY!!!.......2006-09-23
Now there is a CD out worthy of Jellyfish! I have been buying countless other bands trying to capture the spirit and clean production of Jellyfish, and while some (Bleu, The Torries ) have been good, none have been close. FINALLY Roger has gotten back to the sound of Jellyfish. This CD is a must and has definitely raised the bar for Andy. Message to Andy: Either get back with Roger or show us what you have up your sleeve...please! As always, listen to this CD under really good headphones.
Wonderful offering! .......2006-09-12
Manning has been sorely missed since his Jellyfish released their two classic discs so many years ago. This DIY offering is a stunning reminder of just how good this artist can be: a dollop of pitch-perfect pop that will sadly never be heard on the radio. Highly recommended.
Masterpiece.......2006-04-05
This is the kind of masterly do-it-yourself pop album that surfaces once every few years.
Like Jellyfish's two studio albums, it's a grand stew of '60s pop influences--echoes of the Move (bits of the kickoff track "The Land of Pure Imagination"), Left Banke ("What You Don't Know About the Girl"), Beach Boys ("Sandman"), Imperial Drag channeling T Rex ("Creeple People"), Billy Joel ("You Were Right") and vintage pop ("Sleep Children" and the closer "Til We Meet Again").
And, yes, Jellyfish (especially on "The Loser").
But throughout, this CD sounds like nothing so much as Manning--bearing throughout the distinctive imprint of his ever-tuneful writing, sweet voice and solid, unflashy playing.
Only one duff track: the would-be Bond theme "Dragonfly," which is brilliant as homage/parody, but ultimately wears less well than the other 10 songs on the Japanese release. Well recommended.
Simply heaven.......2006-03-20
It realy has been a long wait after Jellyfish. This Roger Joseph Manning solo effort is as beautiful as music can get, giving wagonloads of goosebumps all the way. If you have a craving for the ultimate in sophisticate popmusic you should get this rare jewel.
And don't wait for the US release: it lacks one song from a perfect 11 like the Japanese has. I sure wouldn't want to miss any of these tracks. Very higly recommended!!

Customer Reviews:
I'm feeling the feeling (and it's a good thing).......2007-07-28
On paper, Roger Manning doesn't sound like anything the 60s didn't already deliver: a nasally, manic acoustic guitar player, with lyrics that alternate between chronicles of life as an impoverished New York City sub-folk boho and lefty political protests. So why is this album so good? Partly it's Manning's enthusiasm and sincerity, which gives his strange voice a verve and earnestness that is very appealing. Partly it's the tempering of the occasionally self-indulgent or strident lyrics with gorgeous love songs, like "The 1010 Blues," "The Pearly Blues" or "The Sicilian Train Blues." After only a couple of albums, it seems Manning retired from the scene and is now working as a graphic designer. Perhaps he'll come out of retirement and teach these baby-faced boys with acoustic guitars a thing or two about how it's done.
