Born to be mild? Amos Lee's sophomore effort for Blue Note follows firmly in the gentle guitar strums of his well-received 2005 debut and opening slots for Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Little has changed the second time around, which will come as a relief to those enthralled by his first release. He remains a sensitive sort, mixing his insightful, reflective lyrics with lovely, unforced melodies played by backing musicians that stay on low boil. These tunes go down as smoothly as hot chocolate on a cold day, yet Lee brings an unassuming sincerity to the proceedings with his cozy, amiable voice. Comparisons to Bill Withers and James Taylor are accurate if inevitable, but when the gospel organ quivers into "Skipping Stone," it's clear Lee isn't stuck in a folk-pop rut.

Lee's approach is similar to the way Keb' Mo' treats the blues--he injects his cushy personality into an established genre, writes good if somewhat casual songs, and doesn't push the envelope too far. The final third of the album is perhaps too mellow, and a few midtempo tracks could have perked things up. But adult-contemporary fans looking for dependable Sunday morning music will welcome Supply and Demand as a quality follow-up brimming with subtle soul, style, and sophistication. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous follow-up CD.......2007-07-09

This CD is one I cannot stop listening to. This young man offers a variety of styles, moods, and tones -- all done with seeming ease and fluidity. His lyrics are meaniningful, the melodies catchy, and the arrangements effective. I count this CD among my very favorites.

5 out of 5 stars fresh awareness.......2007-06-28

I enjoyed Amos Lee's debut album, but I have to say that Supply and Demand is a breath of fresh air. I love the versatility in that it seems to fit whatever mood I'm in at any point on any given day with the result being a more relaxed and chilled out me. My particular favorite is Southern Girl, which leaves you longing for a glass of iced tea, a warm evening, and someone to dance with. You will not be dissappointed in Supply and Demand.

I love this CD!!!Keep it playing in my car all the time. I would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A great album..........2007-05-19

This is Amos Lee's second album, and it's really great. He reflects upon many different subjects on this album such as love, break ups, war, and life itself. On "Supply and Demand", Amos talks about needing a plan to find a better way to live. "Freedom" looks at war, and fights, and the idea that "Everything is a threat" in today's world. "Careless" talks of two men fighting over a woman.... And then both losing her.
This is a lively, beautiful album.

5 out of 5 stars Too good to be true!.......2001-09-28

This is a 20th century classic, artistry that everyone should listen to and appreciate. Dagmar's haunting yet seductive vocal quality, captures the soul of what I feel the songwriters wanted convey to us, personally and without interpetation. 'Supply and Demand' is like having Weill and Brecht coming by for a visit, then taking you into their world.
So buy it and know you will be a better person in doing so.

    5 out of 5 stars breathtaking..........2000-09-30

I must admit I didn't even know Dagmar Krause before buying this CD. As I collect Brecht songs, I orderd "Supply and Demand" and I was more than stunned by Dagmar Krause's performance... Her voice left me gasping, I can listen to this CD again and again. Her voice is perfect for the Brecht lyrics. A must-have!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Amazing Releases EVER.......1999-09-26

Dagmar puts passion back into these songs...this deserves the damn re-release after being out of print for so long....Dagmar is queen!

4 out of 5 stars It's about time this was rereleased!.......1999-09-18

Of the contemporary singers of Weill's music -- there are many and great ones, too -- Dagmar Krause posesses a voice closest to Lotte Lenya in quality. I suspect it is an acquired taste for some, but an instant favorite for others. On this recording, she mixes the popular, well-known songs with a host of lesser-known songs that are also deserving of attention. As a whole, this is a valuable disc!

    5 out of 5 stars Phew!.......2006-10-05

My expectations were high. I have listened to the first CD over and over and over . . . and was ready to see what Amos would do next. It is as if he is *elaborating* in this one, expanding instrumentation, playing with great harmonies. The first song "Shout Out Loud" is a fabulous feel-good song, and just the beginning of the journey, which takes the listener to thoughtfulness, romance, sadness, and celebration. "Freedom" is a his not-so-subtle way of commenting on the world, and I like how he does it. I also really love "Sweet Pea" and "Southern Girl" (and not just because I live in Charlottesville).

I highly recommend this CD. I'm enjoying it as I type.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Weill.......2005-05-14

I second the comments of the previous review--Weba Garretson's "Youkeli Tango" is remarkably beautiful. The whole cd is terrific, with the orchestrations contributing what amounts to half of a spectacular duet.

    1 out of 5 stars not amused.......2005-03-09

i feel that brechts style of lyrical flow could not have been more distantly branded as ok

5 out of 5 stars Eisler and Weill with an edge.......2004-02-23

The Eastside Sinfonietta's "Don't Be Afraid," featuring the nuanced, cutting vocals of Weba Garretson, adds a (West Coast) American voice to the current of Weill and Eisler songs sung in English (and sung as they should be sung. ) In recent decades the Australian Robyn Archer and the German Dagmar Krause have released wonderful CDs in English, to add to Gisela May's benchmark German language recordings. This recording belongs in that exalted league, recreating these songs, forcing them to full and bitter flowering once again for this century and this generation of listeners. The musical interpretations here grow out of an avant garde/club scene sensibility. There are other ways to do this music, but this approach tends to strip off the cloying nostagia which sometimes comes with Weimar era music, nostalgia which is in truth completely opposed to the spirit of Brecht's words, and Eisler's and Weill's music. One has to hope that Ms. Garretson and the Eastside Sinfonietta of Los Angeles will attempt an album devoted exclusively to Hanns Eisler's powerful songs -- so little known by American singers and audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Nothing to Fear !.......2004-02-06

One has reason to fear the too well traveled Weil/Brecht musical terrain. It' s been trampled to death with second rate homages. So it was with a jolt of excitement and welcome surprise that I experienced the Don't' Be Afraid album. The Eastside Sinfonietta, and the remarkable Weba Garretson, have infused the repertoire (plus the happy inclusion of Hanss Eisler pieces) with a fresh and inspired take on the songs. The extremely gifted ensemble performs the difficult trick of channeling the Weimar standards so that they are born again with a rare clarity and contemporary impact. Weba Garretson dazzles with her version of Youkali Tango and personalizes all the favorites that had lost their impact until she came along. This CD is a fearsome experience. Don't hesitate for a minute. Enjoy!

          Product Description

Daniel "Protocol" Steverson is a native of Paterson, NJ. Protocol grew up in a poor environment. At an early age my father left me to be the man of the house. My mother alone with four children struggled on welfare and food stamps. We were evicted from place to place. My mother eventually let the whole situation break her down where as she was depressed, looking for a man to replace that void. The end result of that was we were neglected, dirty, left alone often, hungry. I was the oldest so I was watching my younger sibblings which eventually led to us getting taken away from her to be put into foster care. My mother tried her best, but it overtook her will unexpectedly. My sisters and I had frequent visits with one another under dyfeus rules for a short period of time. For seven years we were in different foster homes. At this time i was bitter, angry, and didnt understand why this was happening. There were many short stories if you get what i mean. It seemed to me everyone around me was just lying to keep from hurting me any further. What dont kills you make you stronger. That's exactly what it did. I learned alot on my own growing up- from my first wet dream to my first official date, to my first crush to losing my load for the first time. In elementary kids use to clown me, because i didnt have the latest fashion of things. In fact I rarely had the decentest of things. I wore the same clothes to school, hair nappy and such. Its a long story yet i made it through that to the now. I made it through being homeless, almost getting killed in a car accident. I know there was an angel-whom god sent to save me and keep me alive so that I could use the gift he's given me in song through poetry. Im so passionate about my music. I go to sleep with it and wake up with it. Its in my heart and it hurts if im not doing it. I feel hes given me the gift to touch folks through my music-for will eventually touch that little boy, or girl going through what I went through.
