5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Worship Music with Substance.......2002-05-12

Contemporary worship music is often accused of lacking in musical and lyrical substance, and of being more concerned with appealing to people than approaching God in a spirit of true reverence and worship. While these criticisms, sometimes certainly have a degree of validity, there remains a need for music that speaks to our contemporary cultural setting and that ultilizes the talents and abilities of those living and working within the church today. In the last few years, a number of good projects like "At the Foot Of the Cross" and "City on a Hill" have arisen, combining a worshipful attitude, thoughtful lyrics, and an intentional effort at writing and producing high quality music. These projects, however, have tended to be heavily artist oriented, and are often written and arranged in such a way that the material on them, while certainly beautiful and of value, has seemed more suited for listening and use by individuals than for a corporate worship setting.

The "Raise a Song" project has arisen directly out of a desire to create worship music that is artistically valuable and relevant, theologically sound, and also suited for the needs of corporate worship. The songs on this recording were written in direct response to the life of an active, worshipping church body. Having had the priviledge of being a part of that worshipping body, Grace Evangelical Free Church, in Lynchburg, VA, for just over five years, I have experienced these songs being successfully used in worship, and have found my own faith life enriched by them.

Musically, the songs are guitar based, and are simple and direct enough to be easily learned and used in corporate worship. They also, however, display a sense of intentionality in their composition and arrangement, and proficiency in their musical performances which transcends the level of a lot of contemporary worship music. Most of the lyrics are inspired directly by scripture, but rather than just being lifted wholesale from the pages of the Bible, they are arranged with an ear for rhyme and phrasing which gives them greater artistic sensibility and makes them eminently more singable and memorable. One song, "Maker of All" is an adaption of the Nicene Creed. The songs range from the upbeat and celebratory, to the reflective and repentant, but consistently maintain an attitude of reverence. The title track, which opens the album, begins by declaring "Raise a song of praise to the Lord/Lift him up with reverence and joy", and that seems to me to be as adequate a description as any of the vision these songs successfully embrace.
