The Secret Garden of Childhood Dreams.......2007-05-19

This may be Kevin Kern's first music collection ever, but of all his work it remains my top favourite. The innocence of childhood, the art of being carefree, the peace of being alone or with another human being -- all of these can be heard in the music. It is a musical hideaway, a secret bower where no trouble can enter. That is what I experience with In The Enchanted Garden. This is piano music in the most simple and sincere form. Sincerity is what you hear when you listen to Kevin Kern.

...until I read these reviews, then I bought the album and was hooked from the first four notes of the first song. I'm a huge Jim Brickman, Windham Hill and Narada fan from way back, but had somehow missed Kevin Kern. His styling is simply beautiful. You people are going to keep me broke ordering piano music!

Outstanding!.......2001-07-30

An outstanding and important collection of Hovhaness' music. Performed flawlessly on harp, the music is emotionally powerful. The orchestra is wonderful, making this "modern" music both lush and beautiful. This music shines out above all the ugly music of the late 20th century; Hovhaness is one of the best composers we had.

Peaceful, Meditative Music.......2000-07-18

Alan Hovhaness (who incidentially passed away just a few weeks ago as of this writing) is somewhat obscure, but I believe that he will someday be recognized as one of the twentieth century's greatest composers. Forsaking the atonalism that dominated his era, Hovhaness drew his inspiriation from an eclectic mix of ethnic influences, and from the world of nature.

While hardly "typical" of his work, this album of harp-based music displays the Hovhaness stamp in terms of organization, structure, etc. (his style, once identified, is instantly recognizable). It's the instrumentation that makes this unique. Yolanda Kondonassis is marvelous performer who obviously holds a great deal of affection for this music.

One would expect harp music to be quiet, etherial and evocative; this recording does not disappoint. It creates a mood of quiet and mystery, suggesting images of misty forests and far-off shores, but with a depth that lifts it beyond mere new-age noodling and into the classical tradition.

40 minutes of Estacy!.......2003-02-02

I have followed John Though his entire career. This is by far the best record he has ever been associated with! Half of the Pentagle musicians play on it, including the female singer par folk excellence! On this record, you will here authentic interpretations of midevil & renaissance folk music played and sung in full harmonies by the masters. I kid you not! This is an essential spin for authentic, traditional folk lovers!

A Solid Album.......2000-12-03

If John Renbourn is capable of recording a bad album, I've yet to hear it. This is the second incarnation of the John Renbourn Group. [Fiddler Sue Draheim has been replaced by multi-instrumentalist John Molineux (dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle).] Still on board is Jacqui McShee who provides vocals on the standout track "The Plains of Waterloo."

Other highlights include the eight-and-a-half minute instrumental piece "Sidi Brahim," which features flute, guitar, tabla and swalamandala. Equally impressive is the opening medley, which couples the gorgeous harmonies on "Pavane 'Belle, Qui Tiens Ma Vie'" with the instrumental "Tourdion." There are also two a cappella numbers: the group singing of "The Truth from Above" and McShee's solo rendering of "A Bold Young Farmer."

Originally released in 1980, the group would record only one other album, the equally stunning live recording Live In America in 1981. If you are a fan of British folk music in general or the music of Pentangle in particular (Renbourn's previous band), this album will not disappoint. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Excellent follow-up.......1999-06-22

Excellent follow-up to the superb "A Maid In Bedlam" album. This one covers pretty much the same territory as the first, but is also a must. A gorgeous blend of medieval/renaissance British Isles music that, like "A Maid In Bedlam" must be heard.

Judy's return to the stage!.......2007-07-18

As far as I know, this is Judy Dyble's first album in a long long time. I fell in love with her voice from her work on the first Fairport Convention album, as well as the Trader Horne album she helped cut. That's about it, however. Not much since then, save for the Giles Giles and Fripp CD a couple of years ago called the Brondesbury Tapes. How thrilled I was to finally see her do something new! From the keyboard/electric bass of the first song, "Summer Gathers", the listener will hear that Judy Dyble isn't picking up where Trader Horne left off. Upon this first listen, my first thoughts were whether it would have killed her to have included a mandolin or a harpsichord on some of the songs. What can I say, I loved the Trader Horne album that much! Yet, if you, like me, have followed (or tried to) her work from her part in King Crimson with the Brondesbury Tapes, to her role on the first Fairport Convention album, to Trader Horne, you will notice here that what is present, and is the most important part of the Enchanted Garden album anyway, is Miss Dyble's voice--that never changes, thank goodness. Lyrically, the themes are also not that far off from her previous work. Many of the songs, fairytale-like and laden with mystery, evoke a world of troubadours and elves, especially on the title track. Further, a new-age sensibility seems to be imbued into many of the songs (also because of those omnipresent keyboards) whereby introspective meditations on loved ones are coupled with elements of a particular face of nature, especially snowfall and ominous sunsets.

Familiar and unfamiliar, early and late Coates' works........2001-12-28

A second CD of the music of Eric Coates, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Wilson, takes its name from the principal item - a 20 minute piece for large orchestra called "The Enchanted Garden". In its final form (1937), it was intended for a ballet with a scenario devised by Coates' wife Phyllis. To me it sounds like a symphonic poem, with a particularly engaging "boop-boop-a-doo" opening theme.

Elsewhere you will find the familiar and unfamiliar. You will also find a very early work, "A La Gavotte" (1912) and his last work, a march "High Flight" (1956). Comparisons with Coates' own recordings show that John Wilson keeps close to Coates' rather fleet speeds. My favourite here is "Dance in the Twilight" from the 1937 "Springtime Suite", as evocative and beautifully scored a piece of light music as any that might find its way into your cart.

Yet another winner in the ASV series of Eric Coates CDs. The highly professional BBC Concert Orchestra have once again created a most worthy presentation of works by Eric Coates. As with the companion CD, "Eric Coates~17 Orchestral Miniatures," the diversity of works will satisy and delight all E.C. fans.
