Great for Ceildh's!.......2002-06-18

Ashley MacIsaac is a rare talent that can put Celtic music into main stream and make it sound good. Close to the Floor though is not a blend of rave, trance, pop and rock with his dabblings on a fiddle. This is true Celtic music at its best.
11 Tradiational songs range from Jigs to Reels with wonderful sound and up-beat melodies that is sure to get you to your feet at least once during the 45+ minutes CD.
Tradiaitonal music and a great dinner music CD.

Ashley MacIssac is a true fiddle virtuoso. He is, perhaps, the most impressive young fiddler in the world, and the is one of his best traditional recording. It is definitely a "must-have" for any fan of fiddle, Celtic, folk, or Cape Breton music.

"Close to the Floor", Ashley's first album, was released when he was just 17 years old. Out of my extensive collection of traditional fiddle music, "Close to the Floor" is still my favourite. No other recording approaches better the sound and feel of traditional Cape Breton music.

For you fiddle fans out there, Cape Breton is an island in Nova Scotia, one of Canada's Atlantic provinces. In the early 19th century, Cape Breton became the home of thousands of displaced Scottish highlanders wanting to flee the cultural oppression they faced under the English at home. Outside of Scotland itself, Cape Breton is where the most authentic Scottish music continues to exist today.

Listening to "Close to the Floor", one can get an appreciation of what a Cape Breton ceilidh (party) is really like. Simple, warm instrumentation, old tunes and energic fiddling makes this a great recording. Ashley demonstrates his virtuosity on fiddle, but also d! oes some stepdancing through the Miss Lyall's set and plays piano on another track.

This is a must-have!

This title is not to be confused with Ashley MacIsaac's recording by the same name. In this case, the name comes from dancers' requests for the fiddler to "play one close to the floor!" and the fiddler responds by playing his best tunes for dancing. There are a number of artists here; the principal artists/bands are: Baxter Wareham (button accordian), Figgy Duff, Minnie White (button accordian), Emile Benoit (fiddle), The Crowd, Tickle Harbour, Ron Felix (button accordian), Ray Johnson (button accordian), The Quidl Vidi Ceili Band, Nellie Musseau (chin music, i.e. singing), Joseph Aucoin (fiddle-recorded in 1959, probably the earliest recording of Newfoundland fiddle music), Frank Maher (button accordian), Art Stoyles (button accordian), Rufus Guinchard (fiddle), Red Island, and the Wonderful Grand Band.

This is a live album by Canadian award-winning Singer/Songwriter John Gracie, recorded while on tour through Saskatchewan in Western Canada. This album features the music of a John Gracie concert performance with favourites not available before on any of his earlier CDs such as Farewell to Nova Scotia, the uptempo Irish traditional song, Mountain Dew, his early country hit, "Water Under the Bridge I Never Burned" and a fan favourite, the song written for his little girl, "My Baby's Got Roy Rogers Eyes". Other popular selections are the Country Medley with Gracie's beautiful version of Tennessee Waltz and one of John's favourite love songs, "You Are My Sunshine".
