Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

Different from House Party.......2007-05-14
I ordered this CD along with Dan Zanes House Party CD. My daughter loves the fun songs from the House Party CD better than the Night Time CD. I can't get her to listen to the slow songs on this cd although I really enjoy them.
We love this cd.......2007-02-11
This is in our babies room. Each night when we get ready for bed we listen to this cd. It winds her down a little and makes diaper changing a little more easier for us.
children's music.......2006-10-29
This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.
great music!.......2006-08-05
Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.
Dan Zanes Nightime is "Happy Music".......2006-07-27
I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

More than any children's music release this year, Justin Roberts's Way Out makes you want to buy multiple copies and pass them out to friends--if only to prove that children's music can be unaccountably great. Justin's gift for transplanting himself into the psyche of an 8-year-old lifts him head and shoulders above his goofy-voiced peers. However, simply pinning Justin's talent on songwriting alone sells him short--few others (Dan Zanes, Ralph Covert and They Might Be Giants are exceptions) rock their records as hard. Way Out draws us way in, expertly mowing down musical age barriers and delivering us from the mistaken idea that kidstuff doesn't count. -Tammy La Gorce

Loved this!.......2007-01-09
Every time my son asks me to purchase a "new" Justin Roberts CD I find that it;s better than the last we bought! His music is not just for children, but the whole family.
Way Out CD by Justin Roberts.......2007-01-05
I was fortunate to walk past the librarian's desk and discovered a new CD of his. I LOVED it sooo much i had to buy his others immediately. I am so tired of the typical kids songs we have always heard. He is a humorous, talented lyricist sounding similiar to my favorites - Squeeze and the Cure. I was not disappointed - i can't wait for his next CD.
Wow! The best yet!.......2006-04-25
20 minutes after dropping my kids off at school, I'll realize that I'm still listening to Justin Roberts by myself. Truly great 'kids' music' that adults can enjoy, too.
The beat and brass on this one will get you moving.
Love it!!
Rescued from the Wiggles.......2006-03-16
We discovered Justin Roberts music on XM Kids radio one day, and my entire family was hooked. His lyrics are clever and surprising - and has brought my three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) to both giggles and quiet thoughts while listening. We dance to "Airplane of Food" and "Daycamp" almost daily, and we LOVE the "Humpty Dumpty" song - it's inspired a game where the kids dream up crazy things that Humpty can see while up on the wall.
We're anxiously awaiting his new "Meltdown" CD release on March 21st, and are proud to own all of his albums. We each have our favorite songs - and the kids (and I) fight over which one to listen to next. We've graduated from the Wiggles, and are never EVER looking back!
Great for kids and parents!.......2006-01-15
This is an upbeat, comical CD with great music for kids and parents. Parents, you'll find yourself listening to this music even when the kids aren't around! This will become your favorite kid music to play, I promise!

Album Description
Here's a fun musical way for children to learn about reading, writing, and mathematics. Phonics and numbers are presented in a meaningful context of colorful rhymes and stories. Through hand and finger motions, full body movement, and opportunities for verbal expression, children are fully engaged in the learning process.
The songs focus on the relationship between letter symbols (the alphabet) and sounds of the English language (phonemes). The songs also encourage children to search for relationships, order and predictability as they work with numbers.
When the lyrics pose questions or problems, answers often come from children on the recording. There is always a musical interlude or a short pause before the answer is given. This gives the child listening a chance to answer first, then check the answer immediately following.
The 12 songs are presented first with vocal versions and then with instrumental renditions. Once children have learned a song, they can sing along without hearing the words or create their own lyrics and activities. The instrumentals have a soft piano melody line to act as a guide without overpowering the children's voices.
Included with each CD is a teaching guide that describes ways to actively involve children with each song. (Feel free to vary and adapt the ideas suggested in this guide, and to create new ways of using the songs to fit your school or home situation.) The ultimate goal is always the same: to foster enthusiasm and enjoyment of learning through music and movement.
Customer Reviews:
Good CD.......2007-01-05
This CD is great for young children. They like the songs, and all songs are very catchy. It's nice that the songs are included without words as well. Overall, a very good cd for little ones!
great four any age.......2006-08-15
I have a twenty-two month old and a six month old. They both smile, bounce and dance when I put this c.d. on. The tunes are pleasent and fun. The older child sings some of the words during the call and reponse. I like it and the children seem to love it.
Simply the best!.......2005-03-20
Both of my granddaughters, ages 2 and 5, love this CD and ask for it in the car more often than Sesame Street. The tunes are really catchy and easy to remember. And every song teaches something, from rhythm, to numbers, to vowels and alliteration. Just a great CD!
One little gem!.......2003-05-30
I've used Hap Palmer's music in my pre-k and kindergarten classes for many years. This year I moved to first grade, and having such a huge selection of Hap's music, (nearly all of it on LP's!) that I hadn't thought to add to my collection until I happened to get a copy "One Little Sound, Fun with Phonics and Numbers" at the beginning of this school year. While "One Little Sound" is still great fun and learning for pre/k, and kindergarten, it's also a wonderful resource for those all important first grade skills too. Having a hard time getting those vowels memorized and tired of singing about Old MacDonald's vowels? Try "Ayee I Owe You" and get them down in nothing flat. Learning about syllables? Sing along with "Chickadee And Chipmunk" and learn all about word chunks! (And slide right into a REAL kid pleaser--"Skidamarinkadinkadink" at the end of the song!). Beginning word families? Bop, hop, pop, mop, chop, and flop along with "Bop 'Til We Drop". And learn even more word families with "Bounce", "One Little Sound" and D-O-G, Walkin' The Dog". How about skip counting? "Follow Along" will introduce counting patterns for you. And not only are these songs educational, they are FUN, FUN, FUN! There is so much to this CD, and I've only scratched the surface, so to speak. One more thing--don't forget to read the booklet that comes with it--there's a goldmine of information about how to extend the learning with every song.
Wow! What a terrific CD!.......2002-07-21
Hap's most recent work shows why his music is so widely used by educators. "One Little Sound: Fun with Phonics and Numbers" uses cutting-edge educational methods in a most enjoyable way. Hap's music has evolved with the times, integrating rap and cool beats with his trademark calls for movement. Superb for building reading and math skills. Who says learning can't be fun?

Customer Reviews:
Great music!.......2005-02-26
Roger Day is one of the best children's entertainers I have seen. I first met him when I was scheduling him to perform at my children's elementary school. He was a big hit and has been returning every year. I also use his cds with my 3 year old preschool class and they love the songs. Almost every day one of them asks to sing "Helicopter Harry" or "If You Jump on the Bed". His songs are great for dancing and the lyrics are fun and unique. Every song contains a surprise or two. Any of his cds will be an instant hit with your kids.
Roger Rocks.......2004-07-05
We have seen Roger perform locally and my 3 year old son loved him. I ended up buying the CDs and his video. only drawback is I end up having to play them over and over and over.... for my son. The songs are fun, easy to sing to and make you want to get up and dance!!!
Fun songs with your Kids.......2002-01-20
My kids (ages 3 to 10) LOVE to sing along and do a silly dance with Roger's songs and imaginative lyrics.
Rhinos and Monsters and Hiccupopotami OH MY!.......2001-11-12
Ready To Fly is a 35 minute musical adventure limited only by your imagination. Fans of Roger Day's first kid's CD, Rock n' Roll Rodeo, will fall in love with the new set of characters including a hiccupping hippo, parachute-wearing girl, and a little boy named Harry who sprouts "helicopter hair" because he doesn't like to take baths.
Parents and teachers will delight in the lyrics and music as much as their children and will recognize some familiar artists singing background vocals (the Indigo Girls and Nanci Griffith). It's definately not your average kid's record...no syrup-y sweet sounds here...this record ROCKS!--kids and their parents can listen to it over and over again on the way to school, the grocery store, or on a rainy Saturday and not grow tired of it.
I always finish listening with a smile on my face--I feel like a 31 year old kid!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful CD for Parents of Babies and Young Children.......2007-03-15
I love this CD and so does everyone we've given it to as a gift. I especially like "Waltzing with Bears."
Stardreamer.......2007-03-08
The CD arrived looking fine. It was a gift of lullabies for a friend who has baby twins. She reports that she and they all love it.
Great for children and adults.......2007-03-06
This is one of my all-time favorite children's CDs, though it's very enjoyable for adults, too, especially if you like folk music. It seems that most vocal lullaby albums feature soprano singers, and, being a contralto myself, it's so refreshing to listen to a singer with a more mellow, warm, lower voice. It's also much easier for me to sing along in these keys! If you'd like to check out other albums for kids, do look into Lullaby: A Collection (Music for Little People), or anything by Susie Tallman and Friends.
Beautiful for children and adults alike!.......2007-02-03
My first experience with Priscilla Herdman...and what an impression! I didn't want to return this to the library; neither did my children, ages 2 and 6. Her beautiful, clear, crisp voice with simple, yet rich harmonies and melodies expose kids to the art of folk music and classic rhyme. I've always sung to my children...now I have perfect company! This is my new gift for all parents!
Herdman is magic for children.......2006-10-05
I play this for my grandchildren - and for me. The kids love Herdman's very distinctive approach and relate well to her music. And you know what? So do I. Great music for young and old.

The other side of Shel Silverstein.......2006-06-12
This is not the style of Shel Silverstein many people are familiar with. This is the very funny, slightly raunchy, grown-up side of Shel Silverstein. I've been a fan of Shel Silverstein and Freakin' at the Freakers Ball since the early 70's and have purchased it in vinyl at least 3 times over the years. Finding it on CD is such a happy thing! My vinyl copy is worn out! If you like funny stuff that's just a little twisted, this is for you. How can you resist "I Got Stoned and I Missed It"?
I ain't gonna let no thumbsucker suck my thumb........2005-10-14
A true classic in the field of albums of humorous songs. All the songs here are very funny (with the sole exception of "The Man Who Got No Sign"). Many of these songs will be familiar to listeners of The Dr. Demento Show, especially the legendary "Sahra Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out". The lyrics to that particular song were later included in one of Silverstein's books of poetry for children (as was "The Peace Proposal"), but this is not an album for children. Many of these songs are about sex and/or drugs. If you are one of Uncle Shelby's adult fans, you will probably love this album. The CD includes three bonus tracks, all of which are about the music industry, oddly enough.
Best. Lyric. Ever........2004-03-24
Best. Lyric. Ever: "I spend each dime I can afford. I swear it's gonna win an academy award. I saw Polly in a porny with a pony, and the pony seemed a little bored."
cat box, duct tape, and obscenities galore.......2003-05-21
once upon a time i was at a new years party at a wonderfully intriguing place called the "cat box." this was essentially a rented equivalent of a "squat house" in west philadelphia, inhabited by some of the finest philly punks circa 1990's (most notably, this was the house that kit and his band, wally, built). the "cat box" had its name for a reason... it smelled of one giant litter box! nonetheless, these guys knew the ins and outs of parties. punk shows in the basement (they actually booked shows in their basement, with touring acts et al), dj's on the first floor and drugs (any kind you could ever dream of) on the 2nd and 3rd floor, and of course kegs were accessible on all floors! every party was memorable in its own way. this particular new years eve party (and a certain halloween party where i dressed as laura palmer wrapped in plastic) had to be the crème de la crème. it was the first time i ever tried mesc, rodney and joe from the dead milkmen were there, this amazing punk band (i forget their name) from knoxville played in the basement (not to mention wally, and maybe even the `flap), and i heard shel silverstein's freakin' at the freakers ball for the first time (and don't forget the first item i mentioned doing for the first time, that's very important). it was just four of us sitting in one of the upstairs bedrooms, smoking up, and the "host" was flipping through his records... he pulled out shel, and everyone immediately thought of his children's books, and we all made a frustrated sigh (like, "not that. we're all messed up on drugs, don't put a children's record on"). he wasn't giving up, he opened the gatefold, and to our surprise... well, why don't i leave it to your OWN surprise. let me just say, that in unison we all agreed, this would be the record we would listen to. and let me also just say, "stacy brown got two" had us all in tears, especially by the final verse: "why they climbing up the wall? just to get to stacy. young ones run and old ones crawl. he drives them crazy. he got two and that's a fact. but no one knows where the other one's at. on his elbow, on his knee, or underneath his hat?" i won't even take the time to explain what he's got two of, let's just say, "his girlfriends they all wake up smilin' every morn." this records got all the pot smoking, pornographic hits you can ask for... "i got stoned and i missed it," "polly in a porny," "don't give a dose to the one you love most." its all here. the best part about this whole purchase is the "columbia records radio station service suggested cuts label at the bottom of the back cover," usually columbia would check off what songs they recommended for radio play, you can guess how many of these songs are checked off. well, to end my story, the host of this little get together, made a dub of this record for my girlfriend. when we sobered up the next morning, she found the tape and wrapped it securely in duct tape, so that it could never be re-opened again. maybe that's why we broke up. so last new years, in memorial of one of my best new years eves, i found freakers ball. can't say it was exactly the same as the first time, but it did crack up my friend, margaret (but considering it was 3am, well, anything could have had that effect). margaret then earned the right to own her very own copy (which i found at the fall 2002 austin record convention), which was my christmas gift to her this year. talk about spreading good cheer...
My favorite album from the 70s.......2000-10-21
In 1973, I was in High School and my girlfriend gave me a copy of the original album. She and the album taught me more about sex than I had ever dreamed there could be. The title track alone had me looking up "necrophilia" and a dozen other deviations.
This album has been a cherished part of my collection now for almost 30 years. Not just because of the memories, but because the music is so damn good. Shel Silverstein, Dr. Hook and the others play some crankin' tunes, and it's impossible to feel down when you sing along to "Polly in a Porny".
Perhaps the most compelling thing I can say about this album is that my ex-wife absolutely hated it (She was the Kenny-G type, but a great "Thumbsucker"). Anyway, my turntable died a few years ago and I moved all my vinyl records into a box in the basement. Of all the albums in that box, I miss this one the most. Tonight, while browsing Amazon, I was elated to find it again on CD! I'm sure that my new "Masochistic Baby" will love it.

Album Description
This is music for kids with a rock `n' roll heart. Brady Rymer's Parent's Choice Recommended, iParenting Media Hot Product Award, and NAPPA Honors Award-winning "I Found It!" is a hip descendant of the happy, sing-along spirit of Motown, the party atmosphere of the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen, and the warmth and heart of Bob Marley. Says Rymer, formerly of the RCA roots rock band From Good Homes, "I wanted this CD to be a soulful, funky, feel-good party for kids and their raised-on-radio parents, to show folks just how much fun they can have listening to good, happy music with people they love!" The songs encourage children to creatively explore new and familiar aspects of the world around them, and celebrate small but momentous achievements in a child's world. The infectious "Drawing on the Sidewalk" invites kids to show the world all that's in their hearts by using their imagination; "I Found It!" turns the loss of a loved toy into a celebration of! finding it; "Bathtub Soup" creates a deliciously silly meal from the stuff children bring to bathtime.

One of our favorites.......2006-06-21
My 6 and 8 year old, love this CD. He's also great in concert if you get a chance to see him.
Ok, not great.......2005-09-16
After reading all the reviews, I was expecting to love this CD. But the music starts to all sound the same. It's Brady's version of Bob Dylan-ish music with kid-like beats and words - but much of it is boring. It's not terrible, and my daughter gets a kick out of some of the words, but all in all, I suggest her other music CDs and I wouldn't recommend someone buy this one.
Children's music that is fun for all ages.......2005-02-15
WOW! Brady's latest album is his best. The tunes are growing up (as are our kids). They are still young and fun, and yet "cool" enough to keep our 6 and 8 year old boys' attention.
I especially enjoy the title track "I Found It'.
Your kids will love it and so will you!.......2005-01-06
This is one of those situation where a few years from now, you'll say, "I knew him when..." because there is no better kids music out there. The tunes are great and the lyrics capture the sweetness, silliness, and innocence of youth. Brady has 2 kids of his own and is well aware that kids' music is listened to by both kids AND parents. If your kids are like most, not only do they not mind repetition, they relish it, so it is a huge bonus that this music is so great to listen to. I really like this album, with Look at My Belly a close second, while my son's favorite is Fall Leaves. Buy 'em all and you won't be sorry.
so glad I FOUND IT!.......2004-12-30
This is the children's album we've been looking for. "I Found It" is a pretty apt title. The kids adore Brady's tunes and-- incredibly-- so do we. Nothing against Raffi or baby belugas, but a lot of music aimed at kids is pretty hard to take. Some of Brady's stuff, on the other hand, stands up to the best of adult rock. If your own idea of great music is Neal Young or Dave Mathews, you are in for a treat. We stumbled upon this, then went and bought the other albums by Brady. All are wonderful.

GREAT performer and music.......2007-04-29
My girls saw him at a festival (4 year olds) and LOVED him. We purchased the DVD and CDs. We also met him personally and he is terrific. He should be on Noggin and other children channels!
ALSO, I like the music too!
Fun for everyone!.......2003-05-13
Before Roger Day's children's music career really took off, he wrote contemporary songs and toured the college circuit. It was here I first heard him and fell in love with his music. This CD is full of fun catchy tunes that children and adults will enjoy. I've been to many of his children's concerts and its amazing how the kdis know all the words to his songs; how they stand up and dance and sing along! For the moms and dads who like Roger's lucid voice and easy going song writing style, check out his earlier contemporary cd's from his website.
GREAT MUSIC, FUN FOR ALL AGES!.......2002-02-03
Our 3-year old twins love Roger Day's music, and so do mom and dad! We listen to both this CD and "Ready to Fly" all the time in the car. The lyrics are so creative and the songs so interactive that it makes driving any long or short distance a breeze! "Mosquito Burrito" is a particular favorite on this CD. You won't go wrong with this if you're looking for great family entertainment! Also makes great kids' birthday party presents!

Customer Reviews:
Great music for the kids, big and small in your life........2006-01-07
AS another reviwer wrote, big trouble is a bit better album, but this one still packs a punch of fun fammily entertainment.
We have had trout fishing in our collection long before we had kids. Once you go Trout fisning you'll never want to buy another stupid sugarly popular character Fad CD.
Not as Good as "Big Trouble", but still great.......2003-01-12
Compared to most others who write children's music (if you've seen the Wiggles, you know what I'm talking about), Trout Fishing in America writes songs that are smart and funny.
While this album isn't as good as "Big Trouble", there are several tracks that are quite good. "Boiled okra and spinach" will stay in your head for a while, and "18 wheels on a big rig" is just a trip. Ever heard anybody count to 18 in roman numerals? Quickly?
This album still receives 5 stars when compared to most other children's music. Even though "Big Trouble" is my favorite, we enjoy "Mine!" very much.
A Classic.......2000-04-08
I first heard the "Big Rig" song while cruising in another family's car. I was hooked instantly -what a total riot! The other songs are terrific too, and the Trouts are wonderful musicians and great lyricists - wry, silly and tender. Do yourself a favor - introduce yourself, your family or just about anyone to the Trouts. This is one 'kids' CD that will not make you gag when you hear it. Get it - you won't be disappointed.
Feel-Good-Silly music that will make you tap your feet!.......2000-03-30
I have this and about 3 other albums from Trout...and I have no children. This music always puts a smile on my face and helps me deal with the ride home from work! This is definately a children's album, but if you can hand over your maturity, sing this at the top of your lungs....you will DEFINATELY have fun! Be careful...you might start humming "Mine!" while your walking down the halls at work!
Great Children's Album.......1998-11-26
As a 10 year fan of Trout Fishing in America, I can unequivocally say that this is my favorite band of all time. I see them live whenever they come thru Texas. This album is a good childrens album, with lots of songs you can sing along with (even if you don't have kids).
If you are looking for more adult songs, check out "Who Are These People?", "Truth Is Stranger Than Fishing", or "Over the Limit".
