, or Trail Band material. A band that I think of when I think of the 80's.
The album that killed Quarterflash.......2003-08-06
Of Quarterflash's three "official" albums, this is the last and by far the worst. This is the album that killed off Quarterflash. Quarterflash was one of many female-fronted New Wave bands in the eighties. The female vocalists all had a similar style. This CD is 44 minutes long and has excellent sound quality (unlike many budget priced CD's).
In the seventies, Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer killed progressive rock with overblown excesses. As an extreme reaction, punk moved in, with a very stripped down sound. New Wave evolved from punk, as a more accessible version of the stripped down sound. At the same time, disco became popular. Eventually disco and New Wave blended. This all happened fairly quickly and neither New Wave or Disco lasted very long, compared to other music styles.
Bands tried to change with the quickly changing music styles, and most were not very successful. Many very popular groups from this era put out one or two very good albums, and put out a final album that was a disaster and contributed to the end of the band.
This album was the death of Quarterflash. It only contains 3 good tracks. Most of the other tracks are the worst things the group has ever done. The good tracks are where the group sticks to the modified New Wave style of the second album (Take Another Picture), highlighted by Rindy Ross's saxophone. The bad tracks are where the group tries to copy the New Wave/Disco sound of 1985, with the overblown synthesizers.
After this album, the group would break up. It reformed with a much different line up, and tried to survive doing live shows at county fairs, living off the two hits from the first album. The group also put out a 4th album in 1990 that went completely unnoticed.
Here I go, here I go,... back into blue.......2003-07-24
I have a hard time determining whether this album was better than Take Another Picture. What really gets me cranked up was that Back Into Blue was the last of their three albums. Period. With the talent involved, particularly Rindy Ross on resonant vocals and sax, plus Marv Ross's heavy guitar, and the heavy sheets of synthesizers that formed a pulsing backbeat that defined classic 80's music, I felt they merited at least another album or two.
That being said, the racing, breakneck speed of electronic drums and in sync keyboard bass make "Walking On Ice" the best track on the album. In terms of tempo, think Blondie's "I'm Gonna Love You Too" or "You Crack Me Up" by Huey Lewis and the News.
After a nice sax solo by Rindy, "Caught In The Rain" starts with a catchy synthesizer melody that reminds me of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes." with a chorus punctuated by the ringing harmony of the backing vocals. The song yearns of a time of being together, in the eye of the storm after being caught in the rain, i.e. "I will wait for you forever, cause I'm still caught in the rain."
The title track, a sad slow number, describes that emotional return to someone despite instincts to the contrary: "Some people learn, some will lose/Some people never see a single clue/but here I go, here I go, back into blue."
The second single, "Talk To Me" could've been done by Laura Branigan, although when Rindy sings the pre-chorus "I don't want to wait here anymore/I can't face another closing door...", I think Blondie could've had a shot at this up-tempo song of loneliness. Thing is, I can't envision them being sax compatible the way Quarterflash was.
The heartmelting ballad "I Want To Believe It's You" is another favorite here. Someone burned one too many times by love finally meets someone, leading to that age-old asking the agonizing questions, "are you the one?" "is it right tonight"
"Love Without A Net (You Keep Falling)" details the experience and folly one goes through: "Love's no gift, love will end. you learn you fall and you learn to bend/And your diamond wings break like glass, you jump again just to see what happens..."
"Come To Me" is quite an amusing oddball here, as it is an upbeat calypso-type party song. Rindy though does not out of place singing it.
For one to survive, in a world where "everybody hurries to be eaten or eat" the blues-tinged "Grace Under Fire" advises: "You've got to be diamond, you've got to be steel. The lucky have ice in their veins. They laugh at the devil and burn like a torch in the rain."
"Just For You" lists the reasons why people have sex: "Some to heal and some to hurt, some for thrills and some for dirt." You get the idea. It evenly lists good and bad reasons. Love those soulfully-tinged harmony vocals.
The cynical but upbeat "Welcome To The City" is a sour portrait of the big city: "Four hundred dollars buys a room in the city, with a whole lot of people and a hole in the ceiling, freeze in the winter, die in the summer, seventeen kids next door without a mother, hey if you see me coming up the stairs, please don't confuse me with someone who cares." Sugar and spice, right?
The main difference is that Rindy Ross does all lead vocals here, as Quarterflash went from being a sextet to a quartet, losing vocalist Jack Charles and keyboardist Rick Digiallonardo, with Marv Ross and Rich Gooch adding keyboards to their duties. In terms of songs, there's a consistency of sound, the band seems tighter, heavy reliance on keyboards, particularly the Yamaha QX-1, with Rindy's splendid alto and tenor sax solos sprinkled within. In some cases, some songs sound much the next, but that doesn't hurt the album. And even with this, this album didn't sell well???????????? One of the albums I grew up with and still adore.
A disappointing album.......2001-07-22
Recognizing that fans need to allow musicians to grow and evolve with the times, "Back into Blue" is a suprisingly poor follow-up to Quarterflash's first two albums. "Quarterflash" and "Take Another Picture" exude both emotion and musical honesty through a jazzy/soft-rock medium. The band apparently left their instruments at home when they recorded "Back into Blue". The album is filled with poppish studio synthesizer which strikes this listener as both shallow and hollow. The musianship evident on the first two albums is hidden by the sequencers of the third. I would advise all but the Quarterflash fanatical to invest their entertainment dollars elsewhere.

Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"Two years after releasing the first Rick Astley hits collection -- aptly titled Greatest Hits -- RCA released the second, as part of their Platinum & Gold series. What's the difference between the two? Four tracks. Platinum & Gold is shorter, and lacks the minor hits 'Move Right Out' and 'Ain't Too Proud to Beg' that were on the previous compilation, but most casual fans won't notice their absence since this not only contains the big hits 'Never Gonna Give You Up,' 'Together Forever,' 'She Wants to Dance With Me,' 'It Would Take a Strong Strong Man,' and 'Cry for Help,' it front-loads them so they occupy the first five tracks of this 12-track collection, which makes for a much more engaging listen than Greatest Hits. Plus, it's cheaper than Greatest Hits, which means that for all but the dedicated Astley fan -- who is likely to want full-length albums anyway -- this is the collection to get. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"
A few surprises.......2004-04-04
This is a good album for Astley completists. Not quite as comprehensive as the U.S. or UK greatest hits releases, but this album has a few tracks that were previously unavailable on North American Astley albums - "I'll Never Set You Free", "Just Good Friends", "I'll Be Fine", "Some Kinda Love". There is also a good short mix of the somewhat popular "My Arms Keep Missing You", whereas the U.S. greatest hits has the 12" mix. The liner notes are brief but interesting; they err however by stating , "After four albums and a string of hit singles, Rick walked away from the record biz with no regrets." They neglect to mention Rick's fifth album, "Keep It Turned On" from 2001, and of course there are no tracks from it here. For the price, you can't go wrong on this one, and you'll get some rare tracks.

Satisfying.......2006-08-07
Great set of songs! I really enjoyed the way these songs were presented. Of course each Dusty fan is missing one or more tracks (what about 'In private', 'Just a little lovin', 'Spooky') but I assume this album is more for starters and if you really like them, go on and discover 'Dusty in Memphis', 'Brand new me' and more of her work.
Dusty is and always will be THE BEST!.......2006-08-06
Anything "DUSTY" is great! She can do no wrong! She left us too soon!!
Now Look............2006-08-04
Dusty's entry to Universal's Gold series is a bit short. Dusty Springfield may have been a bigger star overseas but there are fans on the America side of the Atlantic. Many of Dusty's hits are here, sure, but this collection falls off on the second disc. Nothing from her United Artists albums is included, nothing from her "Living Without Your Love" "Reputation" "A Very Fine Love" and "Live From The Royal Albert Hall" is here, her collaboration with Richard Carpenter and her duet with BJ Thomas are also missing. "Gold" would have been an opportunity to introduce Dusty to the American market had this collection been more generous and comprehensive. That said this collection is a well mastered representation of her very well known work. For we die hards "Simply Dusty" has been overhauled and is scheduled for an October release.
Short But Solid.......2006-07-05
Just compare this collection with Tom Jones' volume or any number of others in the GOLD series. This collection is brief, to say the least. Almost all of these songs could have fit on one disc! I can always recommend Dusty Springfield, one of the only GREAT white soul singers! However, there are many collections floating around out there that are superior to this one.
I would direct beginners to Hip-O's fairly comprehensive single disc CD, THE ULTIMATE DUSTY SPRINGFIELD, or the Mercury Chronicles' THE VERY BEST OF DUSTY SPRINGFIELD, with preference for the former, because, like GOLD, it goes beyond her sixties output and includes "The Windmills Of Your Mind." For the new fan who has one of these, and wants more, there are some excellent new 2-CD collections that go a bit deeper into Dusty's catalog. I don't own the beautifully packaged THE DUSTY SPRINGFIELD STORY because I already have just about everything she ever did, but the song list is impressive. CLASSICS & COLLECTIBLES (which includes some alternate takes and rare singles) is very good, but stops short of her later work. Taragon's very fine combo CD, STAY AWHILE/I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU/DUSTY, which features most of her first few dozen singles on one disc, many of them in true stereo (this is the only place you can get many of these mixes, and they sound amazing, especially "I Only Want To Be With You." Why so many subsequent releases insist on using the mono version when this one is available can only be attributable to either licensing problems or ignorance). If you want a REALLY thorough overview and have some cash to spare, try to locate the 4-CD "boxed" set, SIMPLY...DUSTY (a U.K. import).
If you're interested in her best full albums, get EV'RYTHING'S COMING UP DUSTY or DUSTY...DEFINITELY (both imports), THE LOOK OF LOVE (a fine reissue with fantastic bonus tracks that's already out of print and getting hard to find; but well worth seeking out) and the peerless DUSTY IN MEMPHIS (Deluxe Edition, which is stuffed with more than an album's worth of rare bonus tracks). Glad the GOLD series saw fit to add Dusty to their catalog, but disappointed that it is so short. This collection gets one more star from me than it probably deserves for being solid, and because it's, well, DUSTY!
Not quite a "gold" compilation, but not to be completely overlooked either.......2006-07-02
It's pleasing to see that the fairly recommendable Gold series has honoured Dusty with a 2CD set, but disappointing that they left off so many wonderful tracks (I assume it's a label licensing complication that wasn't worth major investment for a mid-price compilation set like this). The remastered quality is nice but not spectacular (I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten still has that very abrupt ending, The Look of Love isn't crystal clear, etc.) and the biography leaves out bits of her career (no discussion of her shelved album during her darker days and not much reflection upon Reputation or A Very Fine Love). It's not a terrible set, just terribly lacking in comparison to some of the Gold compilations for other artists that contain special bonus tracks or rarities. This would be fine as an introduction for a more casual fan or for collector's sake.

The Exquisite Sound of Mantovani.......2002-09-14
This is a Vocalian re-release of two of the most elegant and exquisite LPs recorded by the original Mantovani Orchestra in the 1950's. All of the hallmarks of the Mantovani sound were launched in these early recordings of the large orchestra that made Mantovani a household name. Seven of the tracks were written by Mantovani including the title melody Candlelight, a truly remarkable orchestration. The Gold and Silver Waltz became a mainstay of many Mantovani's concert appearances and it, along with Song of Sorrento and Spring in Montmartre are soaring arrangements that will absolutely delight those already enamoured to the lushness of his music. Begin the Beguine will delight old and new listeners as well. Capture the essence of Mantovani's musical genius by acquiring this collection of outstanding music.

super naxos collection well performed.......2007-07-12
Ever since I discovered Naxos about ten years ago I have gotten their catalog which list such collections which are usually sampled from other Naxos discs and sometimes newly performed. This is a combination of the two. Of course this contains Blue Danube and the waltz from symphonie fantasique but it also contains the skaters, over the waves and khachtaturian's waltz from masquerade which contain truly enchanting melodies well worth hearing
A nice collection with some great surprises.
