3 out of 5 stars The right song at the right time.......2007-04-02

If you asked me what song epitomizes the sixties, I'd answer "Incense and Peppermints".

I remember having the original album my mom bought me. I was about 15/16 at the time. My impression of the song was that it was slick and trendy-sounding and that these guys were cashing in quick on it. Like a "Time" magazine cover article set to music. Rumor had it that the lead singer on "Incense and Peppermints" was hanging around the studio in SF. The band persuaded him to sing it and he was never heard from again. In fact, no one apparently even knew his name. Perfect publicity.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the late 60's.......2006-12-29

This is a compilation, but the original Incense and Peppermints album was really revolutinary for the time. I will date myself now, but I remember hearing this song on the radio in our car and was mesmerized by it. It was the first Lp I had ever bought. I actually wore out the groves on the Lp and came across another a few years ago. To this day, almost 40 years after I first heard the Strawberry Alarm Clock, I still like Incense and Peppermints as well as their other songs. Their style ranges from acid rock to jazz. The musicians are all very talented and the band works as a team as opposed to many of the bands of the era. Their recordings are really high quality and certainly not over processed like a lot of today's music is. SAC was in an era where 60's music was in transition from the early Beatles and old time R&R sound to a more acid rock sound. Lyrics like 'tune in, turn on, turn your eyes around.. look at yourself' were typical of SAC's lyrical style as well as the thinking of the times. It was an odd time. On one side, we had Woodstock, mini-skirts, muscle cars and fun fun fun, But, on the dark side, there were civil rights problems and the Viet Nam war. This transitional period was a kind of awakening for the country and for music. Although not as popular as names like the Doors, Jefferson Airplane and Steppenwolf, the Strawberry Alarm Clock still had a huge following. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to see them (or the Doors!) when they came to the city where I lived during the late 60's. This album is a nice compilation of SAC's hits. The songs are as fresh and original sounding as they were almost 40 years ago.

3 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Plus.......2006-11-29

This compilation album of Strawberry Alarm Clock tracks is no doubt rooted in the psychedelic sixties. The band is most known for `Incense and Peppermint,' but this album shows that there was much more to the band. Strawberry Alarm Clock's talent lies in composition. The album showcases several distinct styles that they blend with psychedelic rock. The song `Starting out the Day' is a good example of this. The song starts out with blaring horns and percussion that reminds me of early Herb Albert and the upbeat tempo and production could be a Tom Jones production. Another good song is `Barefoot in Baltimore.' Again, this song is less psychedelic and more inclusive of other genres of the era (a little Burt Bacharach maybe). Because I cite other artists does not mean that SAC was impersonating, rather they were able to incorporated many different styles into their music. If you like the psychedelic, jam rock of the late sixties, you will appreciate the music, to all others it may seem cliché and dated.

3 out of 5 stars IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR.......2006-07-19

Ok, so its not great, but it was a very good year for all the
hippy trippy lyrics and paisley shirts and the commercial alternative was so much better. Still, its a fun album and needs to be put down, man!!!

3 out of 5 stars riot67 is clueless........2005-12-18

yes these songs do sound a bit dated, but guess what? they're from the 60's...wow, imagine it sounding like the 60's. it's not all hippy stuff and even if it is its still better than hip hop and todays pop crap. oh, and 80's new wave is a lot better than hip hop and modern pop as well. cheers.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Bubble Gum.......2007-05-16

Don't be turned off by the term bubble gum. This is first class bubble gum. The music is at times enchanting and hypnotic. The harmonies are beautifully intertwined into a sweet brew of sound. Many people including myself don't know a lot about the Strawberry Alarm Clock, except for "Incense and Peppermints". This is the best collection out there of theirs' and the first rate liner notes will fill you in on this groups' history. Check out their web site too. Too bad most of their work is out of print. Maybe someone like Rhino will put some of these things back in print. These guys deserve credit for making some fine music.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection- great music- ??? singing!!.......2007-05-03

This SAC cd is the way to go- a great collection spanning their career with most of the highlights from their prime moments. Really interesting arrangments- perhaps some of the most accessible pyschedelic stuff from the sixties. The only downfall of this band is they never had strong vocalists- they get by on the skin of their teeth and with better vocalist/vocalists the material would even be more memorable but all in all theres a charm in the imperfection. Known mostly for "incense" the SAC were more than one hit. These songs showcase a solid experimental band with a grasp of nabbing the best of the sixties and using it their songwriting. Plus they were the house band in the cult classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and wrote a song and performed in Jack Nicholsons "Pysche-Out". Sixties flowerpop at its best!

    4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2007-02-04

It's quite some wonder why this band didn't hit super-stardom...they did, but they didn't, don't know band's history...SAC was able to hit big with "i&p" and "barefoot in baltimore", those songs having two very different sounds, band more versatile than i ever thought back then, actually never knew until this cd that "barefoot" was by them...one thing, and it turns out to be a good thing, you will find many of the songs on this cd are very reminiscent of the songs found in late 60's/early 70's B movies centering around teens and drugs, at least SAC-'esque ...unique sound, unique band...xtremely pleased with this purchase, may even explore them more...thank-you!

4 out of 5 stars Turn on the lava lamp and enjoy rainy day mushroom pillows.......2002-09-25

Well, perhaps the Strawberry Alarm Clock could have been one of the greatest of the 60s vanguard bands, but for the lack of charismatic lead singer. That is why the band's big hit, "Incense and Peppermints" became the hit that it was, because someone other than the regular band members sang the lead. In fact, the singer was just a friend of the band's hanging out in the studio when the song was recorded. "Incense and Peppermints" was put on the B side of a garage punk single "Birdman of Alkatrash," soon to be discovered by a DJ with a good ear, and the rest is history. It is truly one of the grooviest of the groovy hits of the 60s. (But yay all these years later, you have to dig "Birdman" too!)

Still, many of these tunes are simply classic of the times, and showcase the excellent musicianship that was the hallmark of the Strawberry Alarm Clock. The Clock really does capture the hallucinogenic mushroom moments better than any band of the late 60s. Check out "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" for instance. One can laugh at the lyrics, but I think it was meant to be tongue in cheek all along (just like the magic mushroom that inspired it). "The World's On Fire" is a fantastic improvisational vehicle and is TOTALLY psychedelic, and when guitarist Ed King chimes in, you know you are listening to something special. "Tomorrow" has a classic 60s pop feel to it, yet like most of the Clock's songs, one can imagine the trippy and dark underpinnings of a drug-induced influence. The darkest song is "Black Butter," which has a subversive and paranoid feel to it, hard to know what exactly it's about, but heroin does come to mind.

The Strawberry Alarm Clock seems to me to be a cross between the psychedelic influences of San Francisco rock, and the breezy pop feel of the L.A. scene that spawned Love and the Beach Boys. No surprise then, that the Clock hailed from between the two factions in Santa Barbara. Surely the Beach Boys, Love and the Airplane must have perceived the Clock as musical peers, for truly, they did have a lot going for them. I can only imagine what heights this band could have risen to had they had a stand-out lead singer.

And like the era that inspired it, ...

This is great stuff! I fell in love with the original INCENSE AND PEPPERMINTS album that a friend of mine happily picked up in a music store in Amsterdam. I have great memories of listening to that record over and over during the 80s. The song that stood out was "The World is On Fire" which is included in this collection! Several other songs worth hearing from that album are in this collection as well and give the listener a good taste of what this group's first album (cd if you can find it) was all about and why it is worth hunting down. What is included in this gathering of tunes doesn't measure up except for a few such as "Barefoot in Baltimore," "Sit With The Guru" and (my favorite) "Pretty Song From Psych-Out" which I haven't heard since I rented the video back in the 80's. That is truly a beautiful song! Other nice surprises are "You Put Me On Standby"
and "Small Package," but it is obvious the "magic" of the group's sound had diminished and they sound more like a rock group trying to produce a hit rather than the pretty-sounding, experimental "American answer to the Beatles" that I believe they at least for a short time really were. I know "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow," "Strawberries Mean Love," and "Incense & Peppermints" (Not to mention "Sit With the Guru!") sound awfully silly, but those happen to be GREAT songs. If the music of today had that type of charm I would forget all about STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK, but to me they were definitely underrated and measure up with some of the best groups of the sixties and are better than almost every group playing today. If nothing else this collection gives a wide range of their music capabilities and will hopefully break the "one hit wonder" title unfairly put upon them.

1 out of 5 stars easy listening psychedelic - for those who never did acid but wished they had.......2005-09-03

Um, yes, ahem...regarding BluesDude's review of this CD, let me politely say my well considered and experienced opinion is 180 degrees away. While it's true that the dead, jefferson airplane, etc did not always produce brilliant, four star albums, it's a crime to suggest that this band was in the same league. I started playing guitar in 1963, playing for money with rock bands by mid '64, went to the first woodstock and bought tons of albums back then you've never heard of like Joe Byrd & the Field Hippies, to name one classic. I overlooked this band because of the catchy but lightweight hit 'incense & peppermints'. After reading BluesDude's review and some others who suggested i was missing something by not getting deeper into this band, i bought this anthology. what a hunk of junk. i'd call it psycho-lite. at times the airy vocal harmonies sound like the Mike Curb Generation or the Lettermen for gosh sakes, really sappy! Comparing them to the Association is the kindest i could get. The only interesting moments are the few cuts where the fuzz guitars and jazzy rhythms and group vocals remind me of THE great unsung 60s band, Spirit. My intention is not to pick a fight with BluesDude or prove i'm right and that my opinion is the ONLY opinion, but really I find very little here to recommend this CD to fans of 60s psychedelia. Yeah, it has it's moments, but if you want to hear a band that wrapped jazz, folk, harmonies, rock and weirdness into one package, start with Spirit's "The Family that Plays Together," then go to their "Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus" and back to their first album. ANd if you want to hear the best psychedelic rock jam albumt to come out of Frisco, check out Quicksilver's "Happy Trails." If you want more psychedlia that's better than this, go to the J. Airplane's "After Bathing at Baxters." And if you want more, buy the "Nuggets" collection. The Strawberry Alarm Clock's music and performances lack conviction, teeth and chops and the lyrics are generally abyssmal: something a precocious 16 year old stoner might write. Skip this - it's an IDEA of what psychedlic music was supposed to be, not music itself.

4 out of 5 stars Harmless Psychedelia - And A Hit (Admit It!) You Had To Love.......2002-03-25

You can't get much better than the Strawberry Alarm Clock for what seems to have been a mild joke that turned into the blockbuster hit of early 1967: with a teenage friend of the band (who never became a full member) taking the mike on the session, what was supposed to be a B-side turned into "Incense and Peppermints" and, it's about time we all admitted it, you had to be among the smugger-than-thou True Hippie Culturesmog to say anything other than you were getting a terrific kick out of this cagey little rocker. If you were REALLY hip, you were catching onto the song's slightly whacky lyric sendup (probably of Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," what with the spice half-puns that make up about half the lyric), the sleek fuzz guitar break by future Lynyrd Skynyrd string-strangler Ed King, the magnificently cheesy electric organ, and the overall sense that what you had here was a band who couldn't decide whether they wanted to be the "Sgt. Pepper" Beatles or the Beach Boys of "The Beach Boys Today" (a later member of the band has said they liked surf music as much as Indian music) and decided indecision was a virtue if you had some great organ licks to tie it together and the chutzpah to play it with a straight face.

The trouble was, what started as a b-side shot to the top of the charts. And they never again hit the kind of in-the-pocket freak accident that "Incense and Peppermints" was, but neither were they complete stiffs. Their experimental eclecticism was actually more endearing than the hipsters' ideas of psychedelic earnestness were producing (any two minutes of the Strawberries' madness beat the living bejesus out of any two sides worth of the Great Jefferson Dead Messenger Starship), and they had a cheerfully offbeat melodic flair that anticipates some of the late 1970s-early 1980s retropsych experimenters (the early Echo and the Bunnymen, Icicle Works, and Teardrop Explodes come to mind). They seem to have been sunk predominantly by some shenanigans involving an early but fired manager (who put a bogus version of the band on the road while they were trying to push their followup singles, including the underrated "Tomorrow" and an early version of "Good Morning Starshine" - which might have been a hit but for, rumour has it, someone once associated with the band who sent their pre-release demo of the song to the singer who ended up charting with it: Oliver) and a round of personnel changes; by 1971 they were through.

The anthology here gathers up the better of the band's peculiar output. And you find, as you listen on, that it's no great shakes to keep repeating "Incense and Peppermints" until the rest of the material grows on you slowly, whichever selections do. They weren't the first band who couldn't live up to the inadvertent promise of an unexpected blockbuster and they won't be the last. But they gave it one of the more memorable shots and, anyway, "Incense and Peppermints" has outlived its critics (probably to the band's surprise as much as anyone else's) and still sounds as refreshing as a roll of Lifesavers.

5 out of 5 stars Different CD review... Strawberry Alarm Clock.......2002-01-12

The CD I am reviewing is entitled "Strawberries Mean Love" by the Strawberry Alarm Clock on Big Beat Records (UK Import). It's excellent quality if you can find it. Has more songs then this one here with the complete original album and 8 extra tracks. Inside the insert book is a poster pic for a concert with Hendrix, Country Joe & the Fish, SAC, Capt. Speed that was local to me. The book is full of information. SAC is still alive, they live about 30 mins from me in Santa Barbara, CA and still play live occasionally... SAC was one of the best Psychedelic/Pop sometimes garage-punk bands around. Trippy, spaced out, harmonious & fun to listen to. It's a must have for any 60's psych band fans. Others to look for are C.A. Quintet, Pebbles, Nuggets, really any Good 60's comp like Best of Texas Garage, NW Garage, CA Garage etc. I don't have to mention the biggies because if you know great music you already know/have them.

ps: you can see them live in the old 60's classic film "Psych-Out" as well as them doing almost the entire soundtrack with exception of The Seeds (live also with an unreleased song as far as I know called "Two Fingers Pointing" (have LOTS of Seeds CD's, vinyl etc)) and Jack Nicholsen's band oddly doing Purple Haze backwards with different lyrics (still not sure who actually recored that song) is hilarious. The other songs his band in the movie perform are actually SAC.

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to these Naysayers below.......2006-04-02

These guys below don't know what they are talking about. one of them apparently bought this disc because he thought it was related to a sixties band. no wonder he was disappointed. This isn't a perfect CD altogether (a bit of filler) but about 75% of the tracks are really great clever stuff.

    1 out of 5 stars ugh!.......2005-08-21

Simply awful. Not a good song in the bunch. I 'fortunately' bought it used for $3.50 and still feel ripped off! I've heard a number of other Neotropic cuts that I really like, and I will try other CD's, but this one is a loser.

    5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly appealing.......2002-05-21

This is probably the most "unusual" CD in my collection. The music has the ability to conjure up feelings of fear in the pit of your stomach, or a sick feeling of impending doom, or an eery stillness in the world. In other words, the music really makes you FEEL something. Not necessarily light or happy feelings, but the ability with which this music affects me is so strong, I can't help but be drawn into it. I could see much of this CD being used on various movie soundtracks. I try to be open-minded in my musical taste, and once bought Aphex Twin's Drukqs CD. I listened to it a number of times, to give it a chance, but didn't like it at all. Mr. Brubaker's ... is completely different, so if you didn't like Drukqs, perhaps you'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars You cannot imagine a more jaded atmosphere........2002-03-19

She brings me darkness in times of happiness. She brings me light in times of sadness. I honestly love the feeling of being 'hurt' by the music. Give a listen.

5 out of 5 stars She knows what time it is.......2001-11-17

Neotropic (Riz Maslen) is one of the most engaging and consistently intriguing constructors of electronic music playing today. Alternately playful and distressing, Brubaker's will reward both casual and deeper listeners. The haunted house layering of Saucer Song give way to the neurotic electro-goth goofiness of Gutted without missing a proverbial beat, and the rest of the album is just as thoughtfully devised. There's darkness and light here, creating plenty of shadows to play and get lost in.

This is a GREAT disc, but you should NOT buy it from sellers who ask more than $15 for it, as it can be purchased from Travis Dickerson's site (Buckethead's official CD sale site) for $15. TDRSMUSIC - Educate yourself, save money, buy more Buckethead with the extra money.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sonically excellent CD!.......2004-01-31

Summer Of Love Vol. 2 is a nicely mixed selection of trippy pop songs, many of which blared from countless shirt-pocket ALL-TRANSISTOR radios in 1967. What makes this CD unique is that nearly every tune was purposely re-mastered using the original monaural mixes. Sonically, this CD is excellent, having been re-mastered by Bill Inglot who really has an ear for great sound.

3 out of 5 stars Oops, missed a song from my previous review.......1998-08-29

It's me again, the "music fan from California."

I left a song off my list, so just wanted to complete the review:

That Acapulco Gold -- The Rainy Daze. One of those stupid lead-singer-singing-through-a-megaphone ditties. Remember "Winchester Cathedral"? This is like that song, but a thinly-veiled ode to marijuana. Throw-away filler.

3 out of 5 stars Some great stuff, some filler.......1998-08-29

Some of the songs on this album were selections for the terrific original "Nuggets" album, which you'd be lucky to find anymore. However, while "Nuggets" shined throughout, this album is a very mixed bag.

    The standouts:

I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night-- The Electric Prunes. A great psychedelic classic, with a bumblebee guitar riff.

Incense and Peppermints -- Strawberry Alarm Clock. A period piece, but still a great single.

Renaissance Fair -- The Byrds. A track from their fantastic "Younger Than Yesterday" album. Great Crosby/McGuinn tune. "I think that maybe I'm dreaming..."

Back On The Street Again -- The Sunshine Company. The best song by this group. Irresistable folk-tinged song with terrific harmony. Very happy sound, but melancholy lyrics.

My World Fell Down -- Sagittarius. This should've been a big hit when it was released. Instead, it's one of those rare gems that any true '60s fan should have. What a cool song. Great harmonies, instrumental parts, very well produced.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale -- Procol Harum. How can you not like this song? Rolling Stone voted it one of best singles of all time. Sort of "When A Man Loves A Woman" filtered and distorted through "Mr. Bojangles," with a healthy dose of extremely cryptic lyrics thrown in for good measure.

    The filler:

Are You Gonna Be There -- The Chocolate Watch Band. So-so sneering Rolling Stones clone.

Epistle To Dippy -- Donovan. Donovan at his most wimpy and precious. Even the geeky song title should tell you something. Ugh! Turn it off!

Love Every Day -- Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart. Well, if you like Peter & Gordon, I guess you'll like this easy-listening stuff. Otherwise....

The Beat Goes On -- Sonny and Cher. As irritating as always.

Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out) -- The Hombres. Amusing back in the '60s as a fun novelty song. Pretty embarrassing and silly now.

Twelve Thirty -- Mamas And Papas. Not one of their best songs.

Let's Live For Today -- The Grassroots. Never cared much for this song (or group).

It's A Happening Thing -- The Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Their one semi-hit. You can tell why they only had one hit.

Six O' Clock -- The Lovin Spoonful. Not one of their best songs.

You can find a lot of the good songs on other albums such as the (subsequent to the original "Nuggets") "Nuggets"-series records that Rhino released. Maybe those will have a better gem-to-filler ratio than this album.

3 out of 5 stars Two Greats and a bunch of Also-Rans.......1998-06-29

The two really great cuts in this collection make it worth owning. That Acapulco Gold by the Rainy Daze and Let It Out (Let it All Hang Out) by the Hombres are true gems of the era. The rest of this stuff is fairly unremarkable.
