Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson, and Eliza Carthy, the principals in Waterson:Carthy, have all produced brilliant music on their own, but when they perform together they create something truly special. A Dark Light is their fourth recording as a family band, which they have expanded to include melodeon player Tim van Eyken. The selections include the somber ballad "Death and the Lady," which features stunning vocal harmonies and a guest appearance by Martin Simpson on slide guitar; "Lofty Tall Ship," the song that inspired Martin to take up folk music all those years ago; and "Crystal Spring," a love song that includes a lovely vocal duet between Norma and her daughter Eliza. Waterson:Carthy focus on the vocals, but there are occasional flashes of instrumental brilliance, such as on the old Morris dance tune "Balancy Straw," on which Eliza's fiddle and van Eyken's melodeon chase each other to the sprightly rhythm of Martin's guitar. Some of these songs were first sung centuries ago, but it's easy to believe that no one ever sang them with the artistry that Waterson:Carthy do. --Michael Simmons

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21
product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.
The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.
With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21
The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.
My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."
Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.
Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20
There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.
Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.
Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!
A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07
This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.
Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01
Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Finland's His Infernal Majesty (H.I.M.) has managed to release a solid, if not wholly overwhelming album. Listening to vocalist Ville Valo work his magic on the title tune, where he bridges the distance between Bono and Bowie, you almost believe you're listening to one of the great voices, maybe even great bands, of the age. The sharp, hook-laden tunes such as "Killing Loneliness," "Vampire Heart" and "Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly" only seem to confirm that initial spark of discovery. However, the brilliance evident at the beginning barely stretches to the halfway mark. "The Face Of God" and "Drunk On Shadows" are little more than hooks around which other things happen rather than the promising, fully realized material found at the album's start. That said, Dark Light ultimately proves an album worth owning even if it's just to hear Valo work his unmistakable magic from end to end. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
After conquering the rest of the world with chart-topping albums and sold-out tours, Finland's HIM (His Infernal Majesty) makes its U.S. debut with Dark Light. A Scandinavian rock icon, HIM enjoys more than a mere buzz overseas. It's a frenzy. Haunting, gothic, rocking, beautiful and melodic-produced by Tim Palmer (Robert Plant, U2) with the band recording for the first time in the U.S.-Dark Light opens the eyes of America to HIM.
Album Description
After conquering the rest of the world with chart-topping albums and sold-out tours that have seen them play before literally hundreds of thousands of fans over the last decade, Finland's finest are finally making the push for American dominance with Dark Light. Some musicians might feel pressure, but HIM front man Ville Valo had one concern in making Dark Light - bettering himself. Mixed at New York's famed Electric Ladyland studios with producer Tim Palmer (Robert Plant, U2), the band recorded for the first time in the States, holing up for several weeks in the famed Paramour house in Silver Lake, California. The goal was to create a crazy, surreal, weird, David Lynch, Tim Burton feel, but all within the AC/DC context. You can still shake your hips to it, bang your head, or play air guitar. The results are the kind of songs that have made HIM global rock stars, earning Valo a recent spot on the cover of British metal magazine Kerrang! alongside Ozzy Osbourne and Slash. This 10-song collection is classic HIM: haunting, gothic, rocking, beautiful, melodic, and an album that can only come from Valo and his mates. Warner. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
HIM is awsome.......2007-05-23
this album is just different from the other albums. It is a transition that they wanted to do before making a heavy album like VENUS DOOM that is gonna be out in a coupple of months. HIM is one of the best rock bands out there...just go and buy all the cds!!!
Great record..........2007-04-16
Since HIM's incarnation, the band has released five studio album and countless singles, along with one greatest hits compilation and one album full of acoustic songs and remixes. However, up until the release of Dark Light, HIM was virtually unknown to the states, and when this record was released, it marked a new era for HIM and their stateside fans.
Since this was the first HIM record to be released in the states, new fans had this album, and only this album, to give them their daily dosage. However, long time fans of the band, from Finland and even some here in the states, threw the sell out label at HIM. Why?
Most people think it's because Ville Valo (vocals) cut his hair. His hair was short during the Razorblade Romance era, too.
Anyways, the album starts off with a bang with Vampire Heart. The chorus to this song is infectious, and the guitar riff and bass/drum collaboration work in perfect succession with one another, and of course the keyboard help to lend atmosphere to the mood of the song (and album) as a whole. Next up is the albums first single, Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly. The intro is catchy and is just a teaser for the chorus this is to follow. Under the Rose is a more mediocre track, not a bad one but not as catchy as its predecessors. Killing Loneliness is a moody Gothic anthem with a killer chorus and some great keyboard work. Dark Light is a beautiful song with great falsetto from Ville, and Behind The Crimson Door, followed by the astounding The Face Of God, are worth the price of admission alone. The last few tracks seem to lack the punch of the others but they're still good songs and can hold their own.
This album is amazing, and while fans of the band say it is sellout, I personally feel this to be some of the heaviest stuff the band had released yet. Sure, Vampire Heart is no Razorblade Kiss, but Razorblade Romance was six or seven years ago- let the band evolve.
More "light" than "dark"........2007-03-18
Dark Light is the album that is making me lose all respect and hope for this band. A huge let-down compared to the amount of time invested in it.
Let us begin with the positive aspects of the album. "Vampire Heart", the opening song, is a great opener that manages to raise your hopes for this one, and you can hear Valo's old vocal style at the end. "Under the Rose" is a great song that manages to carry one away also. The other hookers are... there aren't any... well, except for "Behind the Crimson Door" and parts of "Face of God".
Now, unto the weaknesses. Valo's new vocals, now that we know he chose to switch to, are still aggravating and could have been SO MUCH better, but then average at mediocre. "Wings of a Butterfly" is a good song, but it became so overrated that, it bores the living hell out of me, and its mood in the chorus is entirely different than the overall "let's rock" mood of the song. Another problem is the lack of atmosphere and the "cheerful", pop-ish direction some other songs have taken. You can sense a great potential in this album, which, if it had been left SIMPLER, would have turned into an actuality. As of now, the "let's push this riff a little more" approach results in catastrophe. The song "Dark Light" should be removed from the album, it is THAT bad. "Killing Loneliness" was blown out of proportion, as there are two better songs than that. Valo's way of putting out the chorus of "Face of God" is another example of this album's overall attitude of pushing things further than they are supposed to go.
Not a total failure, but could exist as a perfect EP rather than a mediocre-at-best LP. I wouldn't recommend it for non-HIM-fans, and the fans should consider themselves warned before jumping the gun on this one.
Darklight.......2007-01-06
HIM is at their best as usual.I completely recommend this cd to all HIM lovers as well as new comers.
...you people are dumb........2007-01-04
This band is named HIM not H.I.M
It doesn't stand for His Infernal Majesty, that's just there old name. Of course it hand an influence on their name, but Ville has said that one of the reasons they changed to HIM is because it was easy to pronounce in many languages, and His Infernal Majesty was getting them too many accusations on what there band's genre was, giving a false inpression.

Numan Excels Live.......2006-06-24
Gary's had many ups and downs in his career. Yet, through it all, his live albums tend to serve him well. This might be one of the best. Sound is very clear, the performance is solid with just enough loose and raw ambience to give it edge. The set list is really what makes this stand out though. This was recorded on the 'Sacrifice' tour, so that album is well represented. What recommends this, however, is focus on tracks that are rarely heard live. "Cars" and "Metal" are absent from this set. Instead you get b-sides, Tubeway Army and Numa tracks like 'Noise, Noise', 'Stormtrooper in Drag', 'The Hunter', 'Jo the Waiter' and 'I'm and Agent'.
LIVE,HEAVY AND DARK !!!!!!!!.......2006-04-04
Man what a return to form for the electric pioneer Gary Numan ! This live record is a milestone.Recorded during the Sacrifice tour,it features like 80% of that record played live and rabid. The tracklist is absolutely out of the ordinary including the most sombre songs of GN's career, with an emphasis on non-album singles and the earliest of songs (The Plan lp) performed in the new industrial style.Despite of the continuous volume variations, this is the most bottom-heavy cd I've ever owned ( kept clipping my amp's protection circuitry) and the midrange is a bit subdued but it's as good as live records get.The set transpires agression, drummer Beasley makes some of his trademark mistakes here and there and guitarrist Kipper is totally out of place with his Stevestevenesque style and soloing (but I like them both anyway)
At 110'this is very generous 2 cd set.Get it or rot !!!!!
I got it for 12$Can!!.......2004-11-09
I really like this live recording from 1994. The tracklisting features a good balance between his industrial Sacrifice stuff(which I love the drumming by Richard Beasley)and a bunch of old songs basically from Tubeway Army, Replicas and Telekon. Cars and other great numbers from The Pleasure Principle are absent here (I guess he became tired of them after 15 years!) but it can't bring this great concert under 5 stars. Favorite tracks : Question of Faith, Noise Noise, Listen to the Sirens, Stormtrooper in Drag, The Hunter, Are Friend's Electric, I'm an Agent... Great stuff!
The overall sound is pretty beefy when compared to his old studio stuff. I like it! His band is tight and professional, truly first class. I guess the audience at the Labatt Hammersmith Apollo had a great time that night!
Finally, a really good live album and an appropriated way to discover Numan. Go with The Pleasure Principle along with this one for a good view of the classic Numan stuff. And get away from his work between 1985 and 1992 if you like Dark Light! 5/5
p.s Bought it for 12$Can in Montreal, my all-time best quality/price rate for a CD :)
Numan Shines LIVE!.......1999-09-22
Gary Numan's music is great, but hearing him live - it's magic. This album is from Gary's 1995 "Sacrifice" Tour. "Sacrifice" ranks among fans as Gary's return to musical form - the songs are powerful, thought provoking and inspired. Hearing this material live is a real treat. Standout songs from the "Sacrifice" tracks like "Bleed" and "Magic" were made to be played live. Other treats are the older songs like "I Die, You Die," "Are Friends Electric," the ever present "Cars" and a great rendition of "Jo the Waiter". This is a great album to introduce people to Gary's music.
Hes back and hes proven.......1999-08-08
Live performances have always been Numans strong point and he has always paid equal attention to both light and sound. It is for this very reason that his live audio recordings stand up by themselves! This is somewhat of a retrospective set managing to please and excite fans from all eras of his career. From the very first notes, the tension is created, then smoothly maintained right through to the finale. See him live...but if you cant then buy this cd, close your eyes, and imagine youre there! Its well worth the trip!!

HIM has changed.......2007-07-05
to start this out i bet half of you have never heard of this damn band before CKy, JAckass, or Viva La Bam. this is my least favorite HIM album mainly because they went mainstream on it. HIM's older material was better written and darker. Also one of the reviewers of this album said HIM never stood for His Infernal Majesty.....WRONG!!!!! HIM was originally called His Infernal Majesty....they chose it as a joke and when they released Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 they changed it to HIM. And do half of you know that the guitarist is in another band called Daniel Lioneye with Ville Valo playing drums? probabally not....if you want to hear them just watch Viva La Bam....they play the theme song. Anyway this album just doesnt cut it for me....but HIM's new material in September with a U.S. release date of September 18th is their darkest and heaviest yet....cheers.
This band rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-02
Don't let any fool tell that this cd sucks, and no you don't have to be goth to like H.I.M. or anything like it. Ville is a great singer and all the members are great. Finally a good Cult band!
Always great!!!.......2006-01-12
Once again they deliver an awesome and completely unique sound. I also first heard them on Bam Margera's CKY movies and was totally taken by "Right Here in my Arms." I've been lucky enought to see them twice in concert (SF ans SJ) and they can definitely rock the place. Can't wait until the next album!!!
This is the "cheaper" version of the Lmt. Ed. Dark Light Cd.......2006-01-03
This album is a really, really good one. I love the older ones but this one is still great. It feels like when these great bands get signed to a more major record label their sounds seems to change. It's really good like I said but it feels like they're drawing a "musical blank" as I like to call it. They seemed to do this during there third cd "Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights". But speaking of albums and releases I read one review that said "...And Love Said No" came out before "Love Metal" which is wrong. It's the opposite. Just thought I'd clear that up for you guys that didn't know that. But anyways, any HIM album is gonna be a great one, and this one rocks. I got lucky though, I got the rare one that they only made 20,000 copies of! Just thought I'd through that in.
Europe's best kept secret officially brightens American shores.......2005-11-10
I'm excited to have my favorite group debut finally! in the US but a little sad that I have to share them with a bunch of new fans but the best kept secret in Europe have waited for 10 years to conquer America. Dark Light is not as heavy as their last great releases such as Love Metal. Dark Light is more hands on with more melody and more harmonies and it also showcases Ville Valo's beautifully controlled vocals to the hilt as in the title song and the Night Side of Eden. Ville Valo has probably at this moment one of the best voices in rock. Dark Light may be lighter for some hardcore HIM fans but nonetheless shows great passions. Labeled more or less a goth band Dark Light should open the deserving HIM to a wider audience.

Album Description
Now It's Overheard has more than once evoked the term "dreamy". This record is no exception; it's awash in the band's signature moody layers and wall of guitar. But if the previous two records were dreamlike, "Dark Light Daybreak" is more akin to waking up. Songs range from stark to symphonic, buoyant to tragic. The range of drumming and the variations of vocals shine through, adding to each song the expertise of musicians who stand back, listen, then bring exactly what needs to be there. This record runs the songwriting gamut, leaving not a moment to be missed.

Look! Now It's Overhead!.......2007-06-23
Bright Eyes' label-mates seem fated for obscurity. Even as a fan, I had no idea this was out until it was two-months-old. I never saw a print review, or heard a note of it on the radio. Nope, not even the local college station. But 'Dark Light Daybreak' makes it plain that obscurity is undeserved.
The wistful psychedelia is in full flower on 'Daybreak', with its opener, "Let the Sirens Rest", "Night Vision" and "Meaning To Say" being the best examples. The latter is especially good, its gentle sway ending much too soon.
But 'Daybreak' also has a newfound edge. The pounding "Walls" and the suitably-titled "Type A" are muscular and aggressive, while the forceful folk of "Let Up" marches like a Saharan sandstorm, it's minor key tuning and handclaps evoking (unintentional?)images of Arabia.
The sheer musicality of this Athens, Georgia quintet is remarkable. Their harmonies, melodies and musical detailing make this one of the richest releases of the past twelve months.
If I have a criticism, it's that too many of the songs end just as it seems they're finding their center. A band like Now It's Overhead seems built for five, six, even seven-minute epics. But the longest track on 'Daybreak' clocks in at four minutes and twelve seconds. Perhaps they want to leave room for in-concert exploration. Or maybe they want to avoid just the kind of jam-band mentality I'm advocating.
In a marketplace dominated by testoserone-addled hip-hop, precious pop princesses and flavor-of-the-month indie bands, one has to wonder whether there's a place for Now It's Overhead.
One can only hope.

The Best Covenant Album.......2007-07-15
Northern Lights - Covenant album - best money spent ever.......2007-05-13
I loved this album. The best song in my opininon on the album is Bullet - great lyrics - followed by Call the Ships to Port. Great money, well worth waiting for it to arrive via import.
If you love this type of album then I'd also suggest VNV Nation and Apotygma Berzerk - particularly Kathy's Song (VNV Nation remix).
Outstanding words, sleepy music.......2007-01-03
Lyrically, it's a five star peace, but the pacing is a little bit slow for someone used the adrenaline-rush techno pace of Front 242 or Prodigy.
The best Covenant album to date for me .......2006-12-02
I listened to 'Northern Light' and was instantly impressed. 4 of the best Covenant songs feature on this album and they are 'Call The Ships to Port', 'Bullet', 'We Stand Alone' and 'We Want Revolution'. Not only do these songs have great lyrics and are sung greatly but they have a great dance to beat, techno and trance easy. The first song 'Monochrome' begins slow and slowly through the song, the beat builds in intensity and tone reaching a chorus. Released in 2002, 'Northern Light' gained Covenant more fanbase around the globe.
Two other promising songs that were experimental were 'Invisible&Silent' and 'Rising Sun'. Basically there is no bad song on this album. I have read previous reviewers and cannot understand some of the bad reviews levelled on this album. This was the first album, the talented trio signed with and many fans saw this has a traitorous move against the deep seated independent roots. Alas, Covenant have remained true to their beginnings and have only modernised their unique music sound that is changing with the times.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this album and this CD has become a popular listening CD for me and my friends. Well worth the purchase for any devout Covenant fan to add to his or her collection.
the best.......2006-05-04
This is the best album of Covenant, even people might say it was a commercial attempt because they were on a major label , this album is a classic , no doubt

Album Description
The legend returns: Metal Church are scheduled to release their latest album, A Light In The Dark, reanimating the zeitgeist of their first two releases, Metal Church (1985) and The Dark (1986). "It's almost precisely twenty years ago that we shook up the international metal scene for the first time with those two recordings," recalls guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof. "Just the right moment to bring that era to mind with a brand new album and the same sort of energy that we had back then". The current band line-up consists of Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar), Ronny Munroe (vocals), Jay Reynolds (guitar), Steve Unger (bass) and new addition Jeff Plate (drums; ex-Savatage). "I've known Jeff since my solo tour with Savatage," Vanderhoof recalls. "And during the 2005 Metal Church tour, when he drummed with opening act Chris Caffery's band, we also got on really well. So it suggested itself to ask him whether he wanted to join Metal Church". Vanderhoof, who doubles as sound engineer and producer during the recordings, promises an offering featuring all the important trademarks of typical Metal Church tracks, including a new version of the classic We Watch The Children Pray as a tribute to vocalist David Wayne, who passed away in May 2005. "A Light In The Dark will represent what the name Metal Church has been standing for the last twenty years."
Customer Reviews:
A great traditional no frills heavy metal release, the 'Church' lives on!.......2007-05-19
The only reason I bought this album was because I could get it new for $11 and decided that was worth the risk. I have every MC album except for "Weight of the World". The self titled album is great and "The Dark" and "Blessing" were pretty good. The "Human Factor" had great music on some tracks and forgetable music on others. I didn't like how prominent Mike Howe was on that one. Everything after was okay at best.
Metal Church lives on. That is good news because they are one of the few bands that played consistent no frills heavy metal (more from a late 70s, early 80s Hard Rock perspective). It's tough to describe the MC sound, but it is somewhere between Deep Purple, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Saxon. The band has always been under Kurt Vanderhoofs direction and guidance. For this reason they remained relatively consistent despite internal struggles.
Every thing about this album exceeded my expectations. The riffs are great, solos are good, really catchy, the drumming is good and not overbearing, and I love Ronny Munroe's vocals. I get the feeling by reading some of the other reviews, people hate Munroe and like Wayne and Howe better. I loved Wayne (especially in Reverend) but didn't like Howe that much. Munroe's vocals are great. The range is pretty varied and they're high but still forceful.
If you're looking for that classic traditional heavy metal release as of late...here it is.
awesome power/thrash metal album.......2007-04-05
Metal Church are an awesome metal band, and his new album proves it.
Metal Church - A Light In The Dark.......2006-11-07
Excellent stuff. The current line up isn't as good as the original one but they are still very good. A Light In The Dark is a good solid metal album.
Stunning return to form........2006-10-22
I've always been a fan of Metal Church, since hearing tracks from 'The Dark' played on the radio 20 or so years ago. I really like this album, they have retained the Metal Church signature sound despite the fact that Kurdt Vanderhoof is the only original member left in the band.
This is a collection of great songs that deserves to be successful, and its a nice touch to re-record Let The Children Pray as a tribute to David Wayne.
I also like the production on this CD. Like a previous reviewer I have also 'dumped' $10k or so on my sound system, but I don't have a problem with the production at all.
I thoroughly recommend this album to anyone who likes heavy metal, as in heavy metal, not emo, etc.

J Phoenix speaks the truth. Music is great on this cd, but the vocals suck!

HIM who???.......2006-02-28
Frighteningly forgettable. Nothing to hate here, nothing to love. No emotional response is evoked at all by this unremarkable CD. This was my first real listen to HIM and will be my last.
Excellent album - definitely worth owning.......2006-02-07
I was hoping I would one day run across an album that was somewhat mellower than what I usually listen to (i.e., extreme metal)...just for a change of pace. When I heard "Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly" on MTV2, I was sold. However, I had my concerns that the album in its entirety would not live up to the expectations I had upon hearing such an excellent song that touched something emotional inside me, as a result, I was initially skeptical upon buying "Dark Light." However, "Dark Light" has proven to be an album that I am very much impressed with. I say this for a number of reasons:
(a) Many of the songs are outstanding! Even fans who are turned off by the goth/metal/emo sound will likely enjoy "Dark Light." The songs on the album are very listener friendly. Whether or not this is a good thing is up for debate depending on which fan you ask. That aside, "Dark Light" contains a number of songs which will no doubt appeal to the mainstream. While I prefer for the bands I like to remain underground, if HIM can continue to release future albums retaining the quality of songwriting that is evident on "Dark Light," then potential fans deserve to hear their music. In addition, to the high quality of song arrangement, the lyrics are powerful as well. Here again, some fans will likely criticize the lyrics as bordering on the whiney nature of many emo lyrics. However, I have no such criticism, as I found the lyrics to be somewhat introspective and (at times) touching.
(b) "Dark Light," as suggested by the title, successfully creates a dark and atmospheric mood which fits the subject matter of the songs nicely. HIM successfully blends the instrumentation together to create a gestalt that works very well. The songs blend together well without sounding like repeats of one another.
(c) Though I wouldn't call "Dark Light" a metal album, it contains enough elements of the genre for it to appeal to some metal fans. Granted, and lets be honest, HIM is no Slayer or Suffocation, and die-hard fans of those bands are not going to take to HIM easily. However, if given the chance "Dark Light" is an album which can successfully appeal to extreme metal fans (such as myself) looking for something a little more mellow to listen to during our "downtime" moments.
(d) I will admit I am fairly new to HIM. I have heard one album prior to "Dark Light," so my next comments should be taken within the context that my exposure to the band has been somewhat limited. However, based on an earlier album that I have heard ("Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights"), "Dark Light" is a much better album displaying a more proficient level of maturity and progression in terms of song quality and songwriting. Here again, outside of the aforementioned previous album, I have no other basis for comparison.
Despite its strengths, no album is without flaws and "Dark Light" is no different. Perhaps the biggest flaw I noticed is that the album is somewhat "top heavy." By this I mean the best songs occur earlier in the album. Standout songs include "Wings of a Butterfly," "Killing Lonliness," and "Behind the Crimson Door," with a few other tracks being noteworthy. In this regard, "Dark Light" is somewhat inconsistent in their quality, with some being standout tracks and others falling within the range of mediocre to sub par. As a result, I find myself playing certain songs repeatedly, while skipping others entirely. However, it does remain possible that certain songs and elements of "Dark Light" can grow on the listener after repeated play. As a matter of fact, I can imagine "Dark Light" being such an album.
Overall, I feel that "Dark Light" is an album worth owning. I have enjoyed the album immensely and it continues to see a disproportionate amount of time in my stereo, as I can't seem to get enough of some of the songs. Its very difficult to write a review of a band that I know so little about, but I feel that if "Dark Light" is any indication of HIM's potential and previous work, then most fans of the band (as well as new fans) will likely find the album enjoyable.
Dark Light-HIM (rock out!).......2006-02-04
This was excellent. I found out about the band from Kerrang! magazine and though I havent heard the full other albums I have loved everything I have heard. Killing Loneliness is a great tune and I loved the keyboard in Drunk On Shadows and Play Dead. You Rock, guys! keep it up! yeh, im under 13 but please take me seriously and listen to this! *nods to self*
Nice.......2006-01-09
I like HIM. HIM is a pretty original band. They have a gothic romantic feel to them. This CD, although good, is not as good as past ones. It has its share of some catchy tunes, but sometimes I get the feeling alot of the songs are just fillers. But nonetheless, I recommend it. If you have never listened to HIM, I would start off with an earlier CD, such as Razorblade Romance. But thats me. Whatever. 4 stars for a more than decent record.
