Sleeping Dogs Wake is one of the under rated bands from the Hyperium/Heavenly Voices genre. For some reason, this band hasn't really "caught on" with a lot of people, but the music is breathtaking and brilliant, and along with Collection D'arnell Andrea, I believe they tie for first place in the Heavenly Voices vein. A very good CD, and I strongly recommend Sugar Kisses and the Hold Me EP .. check em out!

Awesome Album.......2003-08-15

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have seen Martha's Trouble live in Burlington, Vt and we just fell into the place they were playing. What an awesome sound they have and they are just awesome live. The album is great and I highly recomend this cd to anyone!

Almost as good as seeing them live!.......2003-04-14

I saw Martha's Trouble live (actually, just Jen and Rob in an acoustic show) in the dead of winter in a room with no heat, but this dynamic duo still managed to make everyone in the room feel lucky to be there. Jen's unique voice and use of percussion along with Rob's intricate guitar playing made everyone in the room forget the cold, at least until the show was over. I highly recommend this CD to everyone (along with all their other CDs), no matter what your taste. I generally like rock music, but Martha's Trouble is a band that has definitely made it on my "favorite bands" list.

grows on you.......2003-01-26

I saw this CD in Hear Music and was really hesitating at buying it. The woman's voice is a little different - I wondered if i'd find it irritating over time (it's a bit "high pitched"? - don't know how to describe it).

Well, after getting home with it, I think it's left the CD player twice in 6 months. It remains one of my favorite albums in my collection and a few others have went out a bought it after hearing mine. If you like acoustic folk/type music with good lyrics, percussion, etc., this is a can't miss selection.

Only one word can describe this husband and wife duo, inspiration! The stories they tell, the people they meet, the things they have been through have brought them a long way from their first album! Their music is uplifting and rich and unique in every way. Rob on guitar is creative, while Jen's voice captures you! Great job!

An Absolute Delight.......2002-10-05

This group is a new discovery for me. The musicality of their work is remarkable. Multi-layered and rich. A beautiful mix of guitar and percussion marks each track. That voice, Wow, what a soft crisp tone. The music takes it's time and unfurls like thread from a spool. Great music for a roadtrip.

We all live in the shadow of Ornette........2001-06-16

And that is a good thing. It is hard to imagine music like this without the overwhelming presence that Ornette Coleman has had on the jazz music of the last fourty years. This quintet features Rob Reddy on soprano and alto saxophone, Charlie Burnham on violin and mandolin, John Carlson on trumpet and pocket trumpet, Dom Richards on bass and Guillermo E. Brown kicking it big time on the drums. The music is spooky, occassionally funky and definitely not mainstream. Reddy writes twisted melodic pieces that are designed to make full use of the possible variations in the instrumentation. For me the standouts are Reddy, Burnham and Brown. Burnham's mandolin sounds more like someone playing a koto and his violin playing reminds me of Leroy Jenkins. Brown's drumming can be powerful or subtle. Reddy reminds me of Ry Cooder in a way. He is obviously an accomplished player but he never shows off on his horns. He plays with a composer's restraint. Since he is more interested in the overall feeling of a piece than trying to prove what a great soloist he is he tends to offer solos in short jabs and oblique comments. Give this album a try and give your ears a good stretch. If you are unsure try a listen on this site or at the Knitting Factory site.
