I've been a Del Suggs fan since I moved to Tallahassee in 1983. After 20 years, his music continues to be invigorating and thought-provoking. I was lucky enough to "work" with him once many years ago (a little favor for a beloved-occasionally-bizarre County Commissioner), and I have never forgotten the thrill of performing with this consummate professional and very nice man. So, why did it take me so long to buy one of his albums? Don't know, but I'm glad I did. "Floating on the Surface" (1993) is a great mix of the saltwater originals we've come to expect from Del, traditional favorites reinterpreted, and a couple of surprises. The album starts off with "Boundless," with its wonderfully upbeat philosophy we could all stand to adopt. "Standing in the Rain" is a song that has sounded different to me each time I've listened to it; there's a lot going on there, musically and morally. "The Water is Wide" is a long-time favorite of mine, which Del has kept interesting without sacrificing respect to tradition. I had to listen to "Billy" a couple of times before I got it. Is it a story of love, loyalty, betrayal, injustice, personal integrity, or cosmic indifference? The answer is "yes." I really enjoy this CD. However, I must admit that "Talk is Cheap" is not a favorite of mine. I think the irony being expressed sort of slips over the line into bitterness, and the lyrics lack the introspective quality that is present in the other songs on the album. (On the other hand, I've only listened to it three or four times-and always sober.) I have ordered two more CDs by Del Suggs, "Living Deliberately" and "Wooden Boat," which I look forward to playing.
