Customer Reviews:
Pop rock and hard rock from the 1970s.......2007-06-29
Mungo Jerry appeared on the scene in 1970 with their irresistible bubblegum boogie hit In The Summertime, a song that took the world by storm with its simple hypnotic riffs and its catchy tune. It went top ten in both the UK and the USA.
The next year they scored big again with Baby Jump, Lady Rose and You Don't Have To Be In The Army To Fight In The War, all catchy numbers with the same buoyant pop rhythms, engaging melodies and soulful vocals as Summertime. In 1973 they had more hits with Alright Alright Alright and Long Legged Woman.
Their happy mix of prominent piano, guitars and banjo gave them a unique and appealing sound on those hit singles. I would call it folk-pop, but the vocals had a distinct bluesy rock feel and some of these tracks are pure hard rock, though still with a bluesy, at times acid rock, undertone.
This is a good, but not comprehensive collection, as it omits the band's minor successes like Johnny B Bad and Maggie. Besides the aforementioned hits, my other favorites on this album are Wild Love and San Francisco Bay Blues. This music is a beautiful reminder of the colourful variety of styles that flourished in the UK in the early 1970s.
SUPRISING!.... .......2007-01-25
I was told that I had to check out Mungo Jerry not to long ago and I decided to give it a whirl. I was only aware of the obvious hit IN THE SUMMERTIME, as I think that it must have been the only single ever released in the U.S.
That tune is very well known, and always established the band as a rag tag type of music... like an old time western saloon type of gimmick. What I discovered was that these guys had some downright rockin' songs, that recieve very little attention. Songs like BABY JUMP and WILD LOVE are awesome, and sound nothing like the Mungo Jerry that I ever heard before. The singer goes down low on the vocals, and almost rasps out the bars... "she's a cat, she's a kitten..." and so forth.
The dude below me says that he didn't like the fact that it was too rockin', but I think it was great. I was very pleasantly suprised with the sound of this disc. LADY ROSE has sort of an early T. Rex glammed up sound, and sounds closer to the familiar sound that I knew of before, but there are gems all over this one, like a nine minute cover of I JUST WANNA MAKE LOVE TO YOU, crazy. I can't believe the change in styles, but it actually works.
This is packaged like a cheap collection of a band that never had any real hits, but there is a lot of heaviness behind it, and showed me Mungo Jerry in a whole new light. An awesome find.
Disappointing.......2006-06-20
If you know Mungo Jerry, as I did, from the two most popular songs (In the Summertime and Lady Rose) and you are expecting more of the same on this album, you'll be disappointed. Unlike those two upbeat, catchy pop songs, the remainder of this album is what I would call hard rock. Too noisy and loud for me. The 9-minute long "I Just Want to Make Love to You" is almost painful to listen to; it includes a lot of what I would call "screetching". San Francisco Bay Blues is not bad and "You Don't Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War" isn't bad either. The remainder of the songs are just too hard rock for me. Some of the songs are just weird, such as "Baby Let's Play House". It almost seems that the band couldn't quite figure out what they wanted to sound like and did some experimenting, hoping something would work. A few things did; most things didn't. I am probably being overly generous giving 3 stars, but there are a few good songs and some interesting sounds here. Not what I was expecting. It is sometimes hard to believe the same band is playing all these songs because of the difference mixing of styles. The band should have focused on one type of song; instead they jump all over the map with mostly stuff that is not memorable and not that good. If this is the very best of Mungo Jerry, I would hate to hear the worst!!!

Mungo Jerry did do a version of The Pushbike Song.......2007-07-18
Now now folks, let's not have a falling out over this. Mungo Jerry did do a version of The Pushbike Song in 1990, I have a copy of it and very good it is too. Check out www.poparchive.com for this info:
MUNGO JERRY
The Pushbike Song
(Idris & Evan Jones)
1990
Just to further confuse those who already believed this was a 'Mungo Jerry song', this version appeared on the Prestige album All The Hits Plus More (1990).
As the MungoMania website tells it:
Mungo Jerry said they were 'flattered' by Pushbike and Ray (Dorset) recorded it years later by way of, um...tribute, his version appearing on All The Hits Plus More in 1990.
Thanks to Alex Petchenev.
MUNGO JERRY DID RELEASE 'PUSHBIKE SONG'.......2005-05-06
I've got it on another CD (not listed here). The Push Bike Song was a Hot 100 Hit that never broke into the Top 40. However, another artist did break the Australian Top 40 with a cover of The Push Bike Song.
BUBBLEGUM BOOGIE.......2004-03-07

Mungo Jerry didn't do The Pushbike Song.......2002-10-26
... Mungo Jerry didn't do "The Pushbike Song." That was an original composition by The Mixtures, an Austrailian band that did a cover of "In the Summertime." It sounded like Mungo Jerry, but it wasn't them.
...
In mid-1970, The Mixtures signed to the Fable label and issued a cover of Mungo Jerry's `In the Summertime'/`Where You Are' as a single. Coinciding as it did with the 1970 radio ban on certain major labels and overseas records, The Mixtures' version of the song hit the #1 spot during August unchallenged by the original. The band followed up with an original composition in the same jaunty vein, `The Pushbike Song'/`Who Loves You'. `The Pushbike Song' was a prime summer ditty and caught the tempo of the time by also leaping to the coveted #1 spot. As the single peaked in Australia, Polydor issued it in the UK and Sire in the USA. The British showed their appreciation by sending the single to #2 at the start of 1971, while the Americans placed it at #44 on the Billboard chart.
I could NOT believe it!.......2002-10-19
I was all excited to receive my very BEST of Mungo Jerry! When it arrived, I played it thru and kept waiting for The Pushbike Song to play.....it wasn't there! I checked over the CD listing again and again....nope. I felt ripped....HOW can it be called the very best without his second biggest hit????....and yes, I know I should have checked before I ordered, but c'mon....some things in life should be a given and THIS is one. Speaking of life, mine will go on BUT I regret my purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Skiffle-cum-jug band famous for In the summertime.......2005-03-01
Mungo Jerry, comprising Ray Dorset (lead vocals, guitar), Colin Earl (piano, vocals), Paul King (banjo, jug, guitar vocals) and Mike Cole (bass), first made an impact at a pop festival in Staffordshire, England in 1970. Apparently, this hitherto unknown group were more popular than the headline acts (including the Grateful Dead and Traffic) and the ensuing publicity gained them a lot of attention, including a recording contract.
Their first single, In the summertime, has proved to be one of the most popular summer songs of all time, especially in the UK where it was the number one hit for seven weeks. It was also a huge hit in many other countries. After that, Mike Cole left the group, replaced by John \Godfrey. There was a gap of several months before the follow-up single (Baby jump) was released but while this may have cost them momentum in some countries, it did them no harm in Britain as it also made number one, albeit only for two weeks.
Mungo Jerry never hit the top of the charts again but they had a top five hit (Lady Rose), a top three hit (Alright alright alright - an adaptation of a French song) and four other UK hits (You don't have to be in the army to fight in the war, Open up, Wild love, Long legged woman dressed in black). During this run of hits, Paul King and Colin Earl left to form their own group but made no impact. John Pope (piano) and Tim Reeves (drums) replaced them in Mungo Jerry.
Eventually, Ray Dorset became a record producer. His most notable success was to produce Kelly Marie's 1980 number one UK hit, Feels like I'm in love. This disco record is far removed from Mungo Jerry in style, but is actually a cover of a Mungo Jerry B-side - and the original is included on this compilation.
Despite the excellence of some of their other hits, it is rare (even in the UK) to find any of them on various artists compilations apart from In the summertime, which is easy to find on such compilations. If you want to explore their music in greater depth, this is your chance. If you only want In the summertime, you may prefer to go for one of those various artists compilations instead.
New fan.......2003-02-01
I just discovered the song "In the Summertime" while stationed in Europe. Got the CD... where was this music before?! I love the rythm, I listen to it over and over again, specially when traveling home in the morning after my work shift is over.
Memories of a flea market in London..........2001-11-19
First heard "In the Summertime" at a flea market in Soho about 1970. It must have just come out because this old guy played it on his portable Silvertone, hooked up to a megaphone, about 25 times in a row! And I stood there listening to it each and every time, it was that good. Buy this record.
Mungo Jerry! I missed you!.......2000-07-29
My mom had a Mungo Jerry cassete back in 78 or 79, I think, and I listened to it so many times... but I don't know what happened to that tape. I remember "Hello Nadine" as the music I liked the most, and since then I never heard it again! Last month a friend showed me this cd and I couldn't believe! I ordered it immediately. Buy this cd, you won't regret it! It brings memories from a distant past.

Customer Reviews:
this is his best.......2001-05-19
I have the original 50's 33rpm album which doe'snt have as many titles on it. You can try anywhere and you won't find a better rendition of Franky and Johnny......the way he works himself up to a feaver pitch is incredible......no wonder he has had 3 heart attacks in later life. Living in Spain with a young wife must be a cure for all....'Go For It Lonnie'...Fabulous....drop me a line ! I have 'In The Evening'-must be rare, on a 45rpm.
