Over the past 20 years Greg Brown has won the hearts of folk and blues-rocker fans everywhere with his rich baritone and five-star songwriting. On this 1993 recording, Brown and a variety of kids from Iowa--all aspiring songwriters, it seems--deliver 16 songs that mix public domain treasures such as "I See the Moon," Elizabeth Cotton's "Shake Sugaree," and Mississippi John Hurt's "Payday" with charming originals such as "Late Night Radio," "Flabbergabble," "So Long, You Old Tooth," the title track, and the funny "Four Wet Pigs." With lyrics like "The tuna is tired, the seahorse is sleepy" ("Down at the Sea Hotel"), or about the touching trials of "Young Robin," Brown and his kid company create a collection of songs that are as fanciful as they are wistful, witty, and wise. This is also a great introduction for parents who have been encouraged to seek out such Brown classics as 44 & 66, Further In, The Iowa Waltz, or his brilliant recording of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience, also ripe for children ages 4 to 94. --Martin Keller

Product Description
A GRAMMY WINNING CD by an American folk icon and colorful subject of the film "THE BALLAD OF RAMBLIN' JACK!" This is the finest collection of songs and performances from his later career. The CD also features liner notes by Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Bob Weir, Jackson Brown and several other admirers and saddle pals. There is not a less-than-magnificent track to be found anywhere on the disc and his performance of the title track - a classic tale of Old California - is definitive!

In the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--fronted by comix legend Robert Crumb but also featuring fellow old-time music artistes Robert Armstrong, Bob Brozman, Al Dodge, Tom Marion, and Terry Zwigoff (who would later produce a whole film on Crumb)--were the only group around who would even think about still producing 78s. After all, that's where all their favorite music came from. Those platters are now highly collectible, but their albums live on, reissued on CD. Singing in the Bathtub collects some of their best work--humorous originals such as "Suits Crybaby Blues" and plenty of covers of tunes from obscure 78s. Their playing is flawless (you probably haven't heard the steel guitar, banjo mandolin, or musical saw played with such virtuosity as here), the tunes are mostly fun and spirited, and the music styles are varied. In the hands of the Cheap Suits, old-time music is alive and well. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were 6 stars.......2006-11-10

This is a great interpretation of some old treasures. The first (title) track will knock your socks off when Bob Brozman comes in with his Resophonic guitar. And there are some new(er) songs in the same vein, especially "Shopping Mall Blues". See also "Chasin' Rainbows". If you don't have both, take the buy-2 deal. You won't be sorry, except that you'll never get some of these out of your head.

R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD features their third (and last) album, originally titled "Number Three". On this album, the group was expanded from four members to six, which resulted in them having a "fuller" sound. The music here is a lot of fun and it's very well played. The CD is in mono, except for "My Gal Sal", which is inexplicably in stereo. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will definitely enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars How can music so quaint "rock" so hard?.......2004-10-31

These guys tackled old time music with such enthusiasm, musical talent, and just plain "hep", this collection is entertaining without any sense of feeling like a museum piece. Their talent and pure love of music are unmistakable in the instrumentation and vocal work of these songs. If you think you are too cool to smile and sing along, maybe even dance around a little, then don't buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars MAKES YOUR FEET TAP AND BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE!.......2003-12-17

An all too forgotten music brought back to life, by this amazing band of well humored and talented musicians. Find modern day albums are sufficently lacking in the playing of a saw?!! well search no further! This CD resurects instruments and music long past, but never out of style. Mr. Robert Crumb has certainly left his mark on this world in very unique ways :)

5 out of 5 stars "Sensitive guys who play old outdated tunes"; what a treat!.......2001-01-18

I have all three of the original vinyl LP albums and thought I'd never get to hear these wonderful tunes again when my turntable broke and I switched to CDs. Crumb & Company complain in their self-mocking Suits Crybaby Blues: "Nobody likes our music, they all want stuff that's loud". Whatever the market may be, this music makes my soul soar. It's not "Camp", that 60s fad where truly bad pop culture was held up as unconscious self-parody. These multi-talented, multimedia artists lovingly render these obscure, high-spirited and quaintly corny echoes from a more innocent era. Naive, a bit goofy, and even somewhat racist in an innocent way ( "Sing Song Girl" portrays cartoonish orientals)this music evokes the enthusiastic rowdiness of an America on a binge. Much like R. Crumb's comix, the stuff may be a bit politically incorrect and even grotesque, but it is raucously entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and parents too!.......2007-04-21

I like Greg Brown -- not the biggest fan, but I appreciate his music. However, this album is probably my favorite kids music CD. My 1 1/2 year old likes it, and even though there are a few morbid things on the CD, it's like Brown thought, "why must all kids music be boring/bland/goofy?" and created the solution. So much kids music will drive you nuts after a while because it has good kid hooks but not much more. Greg Brown has made the CD clearly kids-accessible, but also quite adult-accessible. Kudos. I wish I could find more like it.

2 out of 5 stars love greg brown, but this is not so hot.......2005-08-28

I am a HUGE greg Brown fan and was ecstatic to find a kids' cd for my daughter. I am by no means a squeamish mom and like to expose my daughter to the world. However, this cd is filled with songs about monsters and animals and people dying... not really what I am looking for in a kids' cd. My daughter is pretty young (2), and so she doesn't understand most of the words... but she doesn't like it that much (not much catchy kid stuff going on) and I worry about the words when she gets older. I wouldn't recommend it! Get Poet Game and listen for yourself instead!

5 out of 5 stars If ya got kids and like Greg Brown then this CD is a must!.......1998-11-04

My 4 year old gets a kick out of "Bath Tub Blues" or as he calls it "I get so dirty" as well as "Monsters & Giants" and "I see the moon" ....Greg Brown has a tune for everyone...this CD... as others of Greg's is a must have...if you have kids and wish to share fun music with them....GET IT!...if you don't have kids GET IT anyway! (your never to old to enjoy these tunes)

5 out of 5 stars For kids of all ages.......2006-11-25

I teach 9 and 10 year olds. They are too "grown up" for most kids CD's. This is one we all could enjoy. And they don't even know they are getting a lesson!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure for adults as well kids.......2004-07-29

I'm not sure I'd call myself a grownup, but I'm definitely no kid -- and I can't help but smile large every time I listen to this one. Kids love it -- and their grownups can get a kick from the wordplay and the general good natured silliness of all the songs. This is an album with heart and soul -- excellent messages without sounding messagy -- if you know what I mean. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for all ages!.......2004-05-25

I am the mother of a 1 year old but I love these songs myself! LaMotte is so talented. He takes familiar words or tunes and rearranges them in wonderful ways. There are also songs all his own, and they are just great! I love this CD and highly recommend it to anyone with or without kids! His songs are meaningful and fun!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2002-10-29

My 3 year old daughter first heard this CD at day care and now she has her very own copy. It has replaced her Disney CD (thank goodness) in the CD player. She loves it.
