A fine fusion.......2007-07-09
I saw this band perform in the film Driving Lessons. I was so much in love with their music that I went directly home to order the CD from Amazon. I'm not disappointed. What a great idea - to somehow fuse Celtic instrumentation into Latin music. It's an original and natural fit. It's not gimmicky like Paul Simon's African forays, wherein it sounds like he took the vocals off an indigenous recording and added his own. There's a real synthesis here, and it works perfectly.
Salsa Celtica has got the horns, great lead singing and unison background choruses of Latin, as well as the violin and flute of Celtic music. For me that's heaven.
And now for something completely different.......2007-01-04
I heard Salsa Celtica's Auld Lang Syne on December 30th on NPR's Folkways in the car and immediately as it started my wife and I remarked that we had to find the CD. This group is really hard to believe, as they all seem to be white Scots making amazing Latin music. There are parts of it that remind me on Manu Chao, with snippets of Spanish language radio playing in the background. In parts or as a whole this album is happy music, and as one reviewer mentions above, you simply can't help but start to dance. This is a great album and deserving of your ears and there isn't a weak track amongst them. Shop with confidence, I am sure you won't be disappointed.
Makes Me Wish I Played Bagpipes.......2005-05-04
I sought out this album after hearing "Sol de la Noche" as the opening track on Putumayo's compilation album, SALSA AROUND THE WORLD. And there's always a danger when one buys an album based on a single song, but there's nothing disappointing about this album.
This Scottish group is an amazingly talented ensemble, taking salsa traditions and rhythms and infusing them with celtic instruments and traditions. The performances are tight, inventive, and I defy you to listen to this album and not want to dance, even if it's just in your chair.
Their closing rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" is not to be missed. I WILL buy their future albums.
Not bad at all.......2005-05-04
This is one very good cd, for those who like a more Cuban-feel to their salsa. The slow, deliberate pace of most of the tracks is so refreshing, compared to some of the mind-bogglingly quick "salsa" being mass-marketed today. "Sol de la Noche" (which can be found on Putumayo CD "Salsa Around The World") is a great track, which features a nice hint of Scottish sounds, driving a great Cuban beat.
The "Guajira Sin Sol" track is amazing, my personal favorite. This song could play at all the best Latin lounges, it is so smooth and chilling, yet makes you want to jump up and shake your booty.
"Ave María de Escocia Medley" was the third best track, a fun song with great lyrics. Great salsa track, the hardest salsa track on the CD. Great stuff, and you WILL want to dance to this!
The other songs are good, just not as good as those above. The "Cumbia Celtica" track is very innovative, and they actually manage to pull off an authentic Colombian/Scottish feel. These gentlemen are great musicians, and we should be watching them in the future. With just a little more tweaking, they might just be the next top band in Salsa.
How can a Scottish band play latin music this well?.......2003-12-08
Sailing on the west coast of Scotland this summer, we walked into an isolated pub and were blown away to hear the best Latin music this side of Miami! Don't know where these guys came from, but if you can listen to this stuff without getting up and dancing, check to make sure you're still breathing. Fantastic Latin beat!

Customer Reviews:
great CD for little babies.......2007-07-05
I am native spanish and this CD is the closest to the music I've had when I was little. Music is soft with no annoying voices. My 4 month old baby loves it already. Many of the songs are fun to dance with and in others you can signal with your hands while singing. Highly recommended.
Great CD and fun to listen too for parents...and baby!.......2006-12-23
We have a 10 month old and we can only speak English to her. To introduce her to the Spanish language we got this CD of music and the whole family loves it, including the little one. We all love dancing around the living room while its playing. Its also has 5 or 6 spoken parts to expose the baby to the spoken word. Also, its been a great CD to put her to sleep with because to songs are so soft an pleasing. You can't go wrong with this one!
Excellent sound quality, diversity of voices/songs.......2006-05-27
As a non-native Spanish speaker trying to expose our daughter to as much Spanish as possible (my husband only speaks English to her), this is a perfect CD with easily understood (i.e. not too fast, nor too many voices singing at once) and fun music in Spanish. The music quality is great and diversity of people singing (women, men, children) is broader than other CD's I've heard. Also, there are quite a few tracks!
Good musicians and creative arrangements.......2005-11-28
It can be hard to find children's music in Spanish that parents can also enjoy, but this is it. These performers sing well and have put together some delightful arrangments of old standards as well as some new songs. My Spanish-speaking kids (ages 4 and 1) love it and always get up to dance during their favorites.

This disc is obviously aimed at the world-music audience, if one judges from its title and the subtitle, "Folk-Inspired Music for Guitar." But that shouldn't dissuade listeners interested in more serious music. Isbin has collected original pieces and arrangements from Spain, Latin America, Appalachia, Ireland, Israel, and Greece--all of them quite lovely. It's really amazing to hear, for example, the "Londonderry Air," better known as "Danny Boy," in such a sympathetic arrangement by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. She plays with such technical mastery that you wind up taking it for granted, while appreciating her songful delivery of this highly varied program of music, which was mostly first intended for the human voice. The uncommonly attractive booklet, including photos of Isbin as a world traveler, is another asset to this fine program, as is Teldec's realistic recorded sound. --Leslie Gerber

"Dreams of a World": A Dialogue..........2005-03-28
I was introduced to Ms. Isbin's music this winter during a trip when a friend had "Dreams of a World" on for 3 days straight, dawn to dusk. Typically, after listening to the same CD twice, one gets bored or annoyed. Yet, this was not the case; on the contrary "Dreams of a World" warmed us up --it was delicately beautiful. Ms. Isbin employs an astonishing pallet of colors, which she blends with unprecedented technical mastery and imaginative nuances throughout her oeuvre.
Cancion y danza for guitar, Agua E Vinho Mahar and Yerushala'im shel zahav are pieces which can easily be overly sentimental and languorous. Ms. Isbin keeps a pleasant balance between the melancholy in her phrasing, the underlying dynamism of her voice
and the warm character of the pieces. I can only recommend Dreams of a World to anyone in search of high quality music played by an artist, not merely a technician.
Dreams with raw emotions. .......2005-01-24
This is one of my all time favorite CD. When critics call Sharon Isbin the "Monet of the guitar" or the "preeminent guitarist of our time" they only begin do justice to her mastery of the instrument. On this CD my favorite pieces are Agua E Vinho, Cancíon y danza for guitar, Recuerdos de la Alhambra. They are superbly played; they are flawless, passionate ,very moving. I cannot help feeling transcend when listening to Dreams of a World. Ms. Isbin does more than play nice music from all over the world; in this CD she shares her heartfelt dreams of a world.
I highly recommend Dreams of a World.
Still a dream ..........2004-12-26
This has long been my favorite classical guitar recording, and I just put it on again after hearing another recent favorite recording ("Reflections of Spain") played by David Russell, who is perhaps the most gifted contemporary guitarist on record. I was inspired to do so by Russell's performance of the "Cancion y Danza No. 1" by Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, which though quite excellent, I knew right away was quite different from Isbin's take on the same piece.
First, let me say, I hope that they are good friends, because they are both landmark musicians and worthy "competitors." Both clearly play with absolute love for both the music and the instrument. In short, I prefer Isbin's recording of the Pipo "Danza," even though, overall, Russell's playing is technically cleaner and more facile (but not by much). (Across his entire CD, I recall barely any string noise from Russell, where as Isbin manages a mere dozen or so clear such imperfections across her entire and ample CD; big deal).
I think the thing that draws me to Isbin in this piece (and her CD, in general) is her incredible variety of rhythm, attack, and tone color, all of which combine to give an impression of near perfect balance between spontaneity and precision. She has a way of taking time without the slightest sense of delay or heaviness. This is probably because her tempo never changes, only the rhythm around it, which is a classic hallmark of rhythmic mastery. This means that she hears and feels, both deeply and objectively, every moment of "sound and space" (notes and rest) from beginning to end, like an unbroken line painted across a master's canvas. Combined with this, she uses the space between her bridge and finger board to elicit the most amazing contrasts in tone color (one of the great contributions of Segovia to the art).
Russell plays with equal mastery of rhythm and attack, perhaps aided by the remarkable sonic depth built into his guitar. While he makes maximum use of that wonderful guitar sound, he is somewhat less dramatic in his changes of volume and tone color between phrases, aiming for a more consistent and lyrical quality, certainly another aim of mastery in itself, but there in lies the difference. Still, his sharp shaping of phrases, especially in his choice of Spanish music on his entire CD, with that impeccable technique behind it, weaves a spell all its own.
So, even though Russell's is among the finest pure Spanish musical CDs available, and one of my favorite in that genre (musical realm), I still have to give my nod to Isbin's multi-national effort for its unmatched ability to conjure, especially today, the most sublime dreams of a better world.
An Elegant Journey Around The World.......2004-07-09
From the moment I put this CD on my player to the time the CD ended, I was transfixed. This CD is such a delight to the ears, that it is difficult to put into words the emotions experienced while listening. I attended a NY Philharmonic performance several weeks ago with guest soloist Sharon Isbin. Her live performance was mesmerizing. She did an encore performance of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" which took my breath away. The NY Times reviewer called it a "...virtuoso encore...". How wonderful that this piece appears on Dreams of a World. A CD that will transport you around the world with the flavors of outstanding compositions interpreted by a musician who is one of the greatest living classical guitarists today. Do yourself a favor and experience the magic.
Simply Superb.......2004-07-07
You don't have to be a classical music expert to love this CD. It is accessible to both the novice as well as the sophisticated listener.
Dreams of a World is the type of CD you come back to over and over again. Each listening reveals a new layer of complexity and mastery. To master an instrument requires a unique blend of disciplined technique and creative emotion. One may aspire to being a perfect technician and yet lack in emotive nuance. One may aspire to evoke emotion and yet lack proper technique. In either case the listener is left wanting. Isbin however, inspires by combining flawless technique with passionate creativity. For example, the works by Neomi Shemer shimmer. Isbin's technique, her emotion, and her versatility shine forth on this CD. This is a beautiful work, and should be in every music lovers collection.

I believe this is a wonderful CD and you will enjoy it any time. It combines different rithms and Marta's voice is incredible. I love all the songs in the CD.
Songs from the heart.......2006-11-03
I became aquainted with Marta Gomez after hearing her song in the Putamayo CD - Women of Latin America. Looking for more of her work, this was the 1st one I purchased, and I'm glad I did. The combination of her sweet voice with the simple yet full of wisdom lyrics (granted, you have to understand the language) make Cantos de Agua Dulce unbeatable.
Just a note on the name, it should be Songs of the Fresh Water. Similarly the English translation of the lyrics on her web site could be improved a bit.
cantos de agua dulce.......2006-03-01
I like her songs because the thems and her voice that have a unique and sensual expression.
beautiful voice.......2005-08-22
I heard Marta Gomez live in some basement of the Jewish Museum in New York City in July, 05. She sounded like an angel to me and this CD doesn't loose that sound. Good music for background during a dinner party or hanging out at home with my sister.
You can't go wrong with Cantos De Agua Dulce.......2005-08-03
I heard a review of this CD on NPR and ordered it the same day. From beginning to end, it's easy on the ears... Marta's voice is pure and angelic and perfectly supported the sophistically simple play of her band - everything is clear as a bell. I don't understand or speak Spanish and that, to me, is part of the magic - one can revel in the joy of the music itself. On the other hand, my wife does understand most of the lyrics and loves this CD too. We've both given copies of it to family and friends. Throw Cantos De Agua Dulce in your car's CD player and drive. Who know's where you'll end up? But you'll enjoy the journey.... you can't go wrong.

The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Album Description
The guitar has played a major part in the evolution of Brazilian music, especially during the twentieth century. On this recording the charm, beauty and sensuality of Brazilian guitar music can be heard in pieces as diverse as Marco Pereira's Pixaim, a fast rhythmic dance originating from North-East Brazil, João Pernambuco's cheeky Blackbird, the classic song Girl from Ipanema by Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of the Bossa Nova movement and, from Brazil's most famous composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, the hauntingly lyrical Sentimental Melody, written for the film Green Mansions in 1957. Award winning guitarist, Graham Anthony Devine was born in England and, in his teens, moved to Brazil where he has become an established performer and teacher, giving many recitals and masterclasses throughout South America. He is a laureate of many international guitar competitions in Europe and the United States.

Lesser known guitarist wins me over.......2005-04-07
I got this disc on an impulse, trying to add to my slowly growing collection of classical guitar music. This is one impulse buy I do not regret! The selections are very mellow and relaxing, and they seem to mesh together well as if logically following one another. Graham Anthony Devine is truly "Devine" in my book. His technique is awe-inspiring, and his phrasing is subtle and precise. It's obvious he is enjoying himself a great deal playing this music. His disc has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. As a guitarist he ranks right up there with the very best and can easily be compared to John Williams or Pepe Romero, among others. Highly recommended!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
On Bolsa de Agua, more a backyard hootenanny than a meticulous studio creation, the Gourds threw a party where everyone got drunk and wrestled around in the dirt. Propelled by comfortably drawling, catchy alt-country and the band's loopy lyrics and smart-ass sensibility, Bolsa de Agua brings a crooked smile at every turn. --S. Duda
Amazon.com
Texas's multifaceted Gourds have not been well served by record companies, a fact that has made their hard-to-pigeonhole music often just plain hard to find. To christen their signing to the stable, stellar Sugar Hill label, they're spinning a new, twangier set, Bolsa de Agua (as well as reissuing their prior albums). Bolsa has all the Gourds' characteristic elements--guitarist Kevin Russell's barrel-chested vocals and cleanly strummed acoustic guitars; Jimmy Smith's tipsy vocals and thick, sometimes slappy bass; Keith Langford's thwacking drum punctuations; Claude Bernard's accordion (and more); and a host of here rootsily narrative, there freaked, lyrics. To wit: Smith singing woefully, with dramatic violin and accordion backing, "I drank so much coffee / Now my hair it sticks up like the startled squirrels." Even with such lines, though, the Gourds manage to balance (perfectly) the offhand humor of being Texans with small-town stories and musicians with a grasp and reach that connect in a way that defies alt-country stereotypes and blazes trails that only the Gourds will follow. --Andrew Bartlett

Excellent, but a slight drop-off.......2006-09-09
I absolutely love the Gourds, but in all fairness this album is not one of their best. I think that's just due to the fact that there's fewer excellent tracks. Best tunes are El Paso, Hallelujah Shine, and Meat Off The Bone. However, I'd still highly recommend getting it.
Just A Bunch Of notes.......2004-08-24
Reviewers have invoked the protean era of The Band when contexturalizing The Gourds. I'd conceed that the familial zest & jubilant synthesis of so many musical influences starts the ears ticking; call & response, swing, barrel house, bluegrass, & jug that thumps along. It's not the sound of The Band. Despite the textures, you'd get closer to what a protracted halcyon Band might sound like on the 'Largo' project. And a limper quality on the Danko, Anderson, Fjeld effort,'Riding On The Blinds.' There's such a good time feeling in The Gourds, a swelling, toppling good time that feels almost out of control. Is this musical phenomena merely a regional thing? It's nigh impossible to obtain their CDs, including 'Bolsa' over or under the counter in Australia. How long is it since such zanily infectious music was recorded? Spider John Koerner's,'Music Is just A Bunch Of Notes,' maybe, from too long ago.
Winning and charming collection of alt country.......2003-04-08
Intially I was underwhelmed by this album in the light of the shining Stadium Blitzer. However repeated plays have revealed an album with many strengths. I think I was thrown off by Max's songs, "Jesus" and "O Rings" which bring a decidely rural romantic aspect to the group. In a group as eclectic as the Gourds there is plenty of room for variety. Kev brings great tracks like El Paso, Receipts and Fevers, and Off The Bone to the shindig while Jimmy gives us the rural wisdom of Pickles (if you think it is just about pickling you are missing the point), the back porch boogie surrealism of Laying Around The House and the great folk poetry adaption Flamenco Cabaret.I can't think of a better musical take on Lorca anywhere else! So give it time and it will grow. This album consistent gives to the listener with its easy going manner and homegrown warmth.
Their Best Yet.......2001-09-28
The Gourds, who manage to incorporate every type of North American music into their own unique style, create a masterpiece with this record. From the pop rock "Pickles" to the evangelical "Jesus Christ" the Gourds make every song jump out of the speakers and dance around. The songwriting is their best yet and their musicianship is impeccable. While some of their early works had a sloppy drunk edge to them, Bolsa de Agua manages to stay out of the gutter and on the front porch. The Gourds are one of the most unique artists around and this album relfects and celebrates that uniqueness perfectly.
like a mouth full of beans, jalapenos, beer, and olives.......2001-08-30
I've been a fan of the Gourds for since at least 1998 and they keep turning out amazing recordings. The addition of Max Johnson to the line-up really fills out there sound, which, in ways, defies being neatly slotted in one genre.
Yes, they are bluegrass and country and Texas rock and Americana but they have so much heart and soul. Try playing this CD loud when you are cooking up something interesting in your kitchen, something that involves homegrown peppers and herbs.
The CD is a complex array of musical flavors, from the foot-stompin' El Paso to the countrified Meat from the Bone to the hilarious advice in Pickles to the somewhat grunge High Highs Low Lows, these guys offer a great soundtrack. The band gets tighter and tighter, yet the music, pardoxically, comes across as loose as ever.
By the time you finish hearing this CD, you will feel like you have a mouth full of beans, jalapenos, beer, and olives. You may not be able to quite label the taste---it's an alchemical thing, anyway---but you can bet it is unique.

Que Viva Zarzuela!!.......2006-11-10
Zarzuela is Spanish operetta. This is a fine collection of choruses and preludes from various famous Zarzuelas, particularly for a beginner in the genre. If however you have been "enrollado" in Zarzuela for a while it's a lot like popular classics or "Opera Goes to the Movies" It'll be stuff you've heard before. Maestro Roa knows how to conduct with finess and fire, whichever is required and the performances are easy to appreciate and very easy to understand the lyrics if you speak Spanish. I highly reccommend this disc to anyone who wants to take away the veil of mystery surrounding Zarzuela and start exploring on your own. This disc is an excellent place to begin!
Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas.......2006-07-17
Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas~ Miguel Roa was something quite new to me. Having mostly listened to classical from France, Germany, Austria, Russia and Italy I had not listened much to Spanish composers. The end result is that the music is very easy to listen to but feels light and I feel that it sounds a bit to much like movie soundtrack music. The book-let is quite well done and the painting on the front is splendid. The liner notes and the essay inside are well done and it is not overlong or too verbose. I must say that I had never ever heard of any of these composers before and it was a with an adventurous spirit that I started listening to this recording and to my pleasant surprise it was quite good and I therefore give it 4 out 5 stars.

The Dance of the Lovers is Here!.......2003-09-07
For many years an ancient 78 of one of the items found on this welcome CD was the most requested item for playing on the national radio broadcaster in Australia. Requests for full details of the item always yielded an announcement that everything on the record label was printed in Spanish, that there was not much of it, and all that could be deciphered and translated approximated to "The Dance of the Lovers".
Well, the same item features on Track 13 of this CD in a digitally recorded 1999 Madrid recording, and full information is provided about it and the other zarzuela excerpts in notes by Manuel Garcia Franco. This once popular item on Australian airwaves is a simple verse and chorus, the first in the minor and the second in the major mode. Framed in a short introduction and coda, it is sung twice, and what the female chorus members sing the first time is sung by the male chorus members the second time, and vice versa.
Although the Spanish composers of the zarzuela excerpts included here are represented in my collections by solo items from singers such as Supervia and de los Angeles, the choruses and orchestral excerpts found on this CD are all new to my ears. I have never seen a zarzuela and, welcoming and recommending this collection of samples, would like to read reviews or communications from others with better information.
¡Olé!.......2003-02-26
I know almost nothing about zarzuelas, other than that they're Spanish light operas, immensely popular in Spanish-speaking areas and virtually unknown everywhere else. Why they didn't travel and Viennese operetta did, I'll never know; they're a heckuva lot more exciting!
If this disc is any indication, the music, the rhythm, the overall feeling of zarzuela music is infectious. I put this CD on and then couldn't stop listening to it. According to the liner notes, these orchestral selections and choruses are among the best-known from this genre. I can see why they're popular. The playing and singing of the Comunidad de Madrid Orchestra and Chorus are exemplary.
Now please excuse me, while I go sign up for castanet lessons.

Album Description
Afshar is making a bid to capture "the here and now" of classical guitar, in her own words. Rather than revisiting the past, heralded contemporary composers such as Salvador Brotons and Dusan Bogdanovic have created works just for Afshar's skilled hands to play.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Afshar, a master!.......2002-12-30
Lily Afshar already has two wonderful cd's out: One is made completely of a work by Castelnuevo Tedesco, and the other has the big classical guitar hits such as "Asturias" "Koyunbaba" and many more. The difference between her latest album and the previous two is that it is made mostly of brand new premieres and contemporary works. The Scherzo, Omar's Fancy, Broken Slurs were written for Dr. Afshar. The Scherzo, Slurs, and MKG Variations are all world premieres. While having brand new, never-before heard literature on this album, the great thing about it is that it still has great classics by Joaquin Rodrigo, Barrios and Brouwer. The Afro-Cuban Lullaby, by Brouwer, has an unusual, but wonderful addition, a beautiful virtuosic scale. This album truly is a wonderful collection of music which should be present in every person's collection.
American Record Guide, 2002.......2002-07-02
"Lily Afshar - a former writer for this magazine - plays beautifully on this vibrant and adventurous recording made up mostly of contemporary works. Her tone is sonorous, her technique solid, and each of her interpretations of these widely varying works is richly characterized. The recording quality is superb - I have heard quite a few recordings recently with a disturbing hiss. The sound on this one is pristine, projecting all of the details of Afshar's playing without distracting background noise.
I will not attempt to comment on all of these pieces, but I will discuss the less familiar ones. Four were written for Afshar: Salvador Broton's Scherzo, Dusan Bogdanovic's Omar's Fancy, Barbara Kolb's Broken Slurs, and Kamran Ince's MKG Variations. Broton's Scherzo is a dynamic opener for the program, full of fantasy, jagged lines, and ingenious guitar writing. Omar's Fancy is typical of much of Bogdanovic's music, with its ambient stasis and harmonies reminiscent of Eastern Europe. Also on the program is his more substantial Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue for the Golden Flower, a work that explores the same exotic sound world at greater length and with more technical extroversion.
Barbara Kolb's 3 Lullabies have always been among my favorite pieces for the guitar from the latter part of the last century (they were written for David Starobin in 1980). Her music is sophisticated and enchanting, and the humming in the third lullaby is always wonderfully haunting. The humming part is usually performed by a make voice, but Afshar dies it herself here, using an eerily distant, flat tone. Kolb's Broken Slurs, the piece dedicated to Afshar, follows the third lullaby without pause, its two very brief parts seeming to function as a continuation of the earlier work. Kamren Ince's MKG Variations, the final work is dedicated to this guitarist, derives much of its effect from stark contrasts; atmospheric hovering is interrupted by angular outbursts, spare textures giving way to full-voiced harmonies.
The effect of the entire program is very satisfying. Afshar has clearly thought carefully about the order of the pieces to make the most effective sequence of moods and contrasts. This is a fine release from an accomplished performer."

Possession!.......2002-02-22
Ms. Lily Afshar's new CD titled "Possession" is a wonderful mix of the
classical guitar repetoire as it stands today. It has a few well known
pieces (e.g. Afro-Cuban Lullaby -Brouwer, Invocation and Dance-Rodrigo),
some lesser played works by well-known composers and pieces explicity
written for Afshar. In the liner notes Lily says it is meant to capture
a snapshot of a single instant of the guitar repetoire. It's a great CD.
She chose 8 different composers (including Barrios who although not
modern, is finally getting play time). She plays three different pieces
by Brouwer including a beautiful, melancholy rendition of "Un Dia De
Noviembre".
Afshar's playing reflects the CD title. She plays both as if she owns
the pieces and is owned by them. For the pieces that are familiar, she
plays them like no one else! Her playing is articulate and every phrase
beautifully crafted. It has all the positive qualities of live
performance. The playing is so heartfelt that you can almost feel her
breathing.
There is lot's of new music on this CD too that on first listening
sounded interesting, and on second and third listenings sounds
fascinating. The piece "Omar's Fancy" by Bogdanovic instantly brings to
mind Persia. It "feels" Persian even without the title. The composers
that have written new music for her (Brotons, Bogdanovic, Kolb and Ince)
have done a fantastic job, and it's great to see and hear the repetoire
expanding!
