Customer Reviews:
A seneitive, respectful tribute!.......2007-06-29
I only docked this album one star because: 1. it's not Nick Drake, and 2. I understand there's a British 2-disc version, and I want more!!!
Who would have thought, 3+ decades after the fact, Nick Drake's work would finally achieve the recognition it deserved? This album is brimming with interesting renditions of Drake favorites, enthusiastic performances which bring new light to Nick's compositions, without losing the magic within the originals. Definitely worth hunting down!
I also heartily suggest searching for the (criminally-out-of-print) "Nine Of Swords" album from American Scott Appel, for what I consider the single best Drake tribute from a single artist (Appel was also involved in a Drake tribute album called, "Brittle Days" in the 90's, but many cuts from that one put too much of the artist's spin on the covers to make for a satisfying listen). I also have little use for the SACD "Poor Boy", a Northwest American tribute disc with jazz performances that take the material far from Nick's vision.
If you love Nick Drake, I do not think this album will disappoint.
HA, a Nick Drake Cover?.......2004-04-08
i bought this album wanting to hate it. No one but Nick Drake should sing his music. However, this album, like my wifes cooking, does after a while start to taste like the real thing. It is actually pretty good.
OK. So i listened to Northern Sky and dropped my coffee on the table. It is quite awesomely done.
This album fills a few gaps. The arrangements are interesting. Antipodean accents asside, this is rather splendid.
SYMPATHETIC TRIBUTE WORTH BUYING.......2001-07-07
Tribute albums - it's hard to think of good ones. You can't help but compare them to the originals and, while some songs may be outstanding, there is usually a large slab of inferior filler to keep you skipping tracks. I can safely assure Nick Drake fans that they won't be skipping many tracks on this one. The four stars is a comparison to Drake's own canon so this is a collection to take seriously. A bit of a surprise (or unnerving) opening with the little-loved Black Eyed Dog, Drake's most harrowing song done quite effectively by Sydney "acoustic thrash" group, Deadly Nightshades. This is followed by another female lead with a straight cover of one of Drake's standout songs, Northern Sky, by Joy and Lara. Paul Greene's slightly funked up Free Ride has you thinking more of the musical optimism of the earlier Drake albums rather than the decidedly downbeat Pink Moon from which it comes - the biggest musical departure on the album. There are numerous highlights - Melanie Horsenell's Which Will is pure distilled Drake. Dominique Fraissard's finger picking on Three Hours is also right up there. I could go on. And it's not a predictable collection - four selections from my personal favourite, Pink Moon, but only two from the uplifting Bryter Layter. Only selection you'd quibble (apart from Black Eyed Dog) is Been Smoking Too Long which of course was a cover included in the odds and ends on Time of No Reply. But it's such a good rendition by Steve Balbi that it seems right at home here. No, it's not Nick, but these sympathetic and skilled readings of some of his best work is both a worthy addition to a Nick Drake fans music collection and a set that would stand up to the scrutiny of the uninitiated as a window into the reasons Drake's music has such reverence today. Raoul Graf deserves hearty congratulations for putting this together. And the lucky Drake fans in Australia have the opportunity to see it (and more) performed live in the now annual Nick Drake shows in Sydney.
Well Done.......2001-05-20
I am a fanatic of Nick Drake so I am partial in saying that no one comes close to his genius. This CD is the best tribute to Nick Drake I have heard yet. Unexpected at times, but overall good.
