These four CDs cover British folk revivals from the 1960s through the 1990s, with guitarist Martin Carthy, singer Maddy Prior, and multithreat Richard Thompson acting as the glue holding the box together. Indeed, nearly everyone who ever passed through Fairport Convention is represented here, though Fairport itself isn't. The '60s disc--when the scene burst with a sense of innocence and discovery not unlike the folk landscape in America at the time--is easily the most compelling, embracing the guitar experimentalism of Davy Graham and Alexis Korner ("3/4 AD"), the energetic Pogues template the Dubliners ("The Rocky Road to Dublin"), and the earnest pop-folk of the Ian Campbell Folk Group (a version of "The Times They Are a-Changin'," released three weeks before Dylan's own). Things get progressively less interesting after that. This set is probably of little interest to anyone except die-hard folkies, but they'll find it indispensable. If nothing else, these Brits are closer to the source than the American traditionalists whose songs and styles are based on those from the Isles. --John Morthland

Like other country mainstays (Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, et al.), Dolly Parton found creative emancipation in freedom from the commercial airwaves, once the younger generation of artists began dominating country radio. The crossover slickness and calculation of some of her later country hits is nowhere in evidence on this trio of albums that marked her belated return to acoustic bluegrass and mountain music. 1999's Grammy-winning The Grass Is Blue launched the back-to-roots trilogy (also including Little Sparrow and Halos & Horns), with a bonus DVD completing the bargain-priced, four-disc box. Among its highlights are five new song mixes that spotlight the vocal or instrumental work, tribute covers by Kasey Chambers and Sinead O'Connor, a video of Parton and Norah Jones performing "The Grass Is Blue," and extensive notes on the making of these albums. Producer Steve Buckingham and Parton enlisted top musicians (like Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan) and harmonizers (like Alison Krauss and Patty Loveless) on material that ranges from the original to the traditional (the Louvins' "Cash on the Barrelhead," Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone") to the out-of-left-field (Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You"). For those who love the purity of her songbird trill, this is a return to the early form of "Jolene." --Don McLeese

Dolly Parton's Acoustic Collection.......2007-03-29
Very good selection of songs from an earlier time. If you like Dolly Parton, you will love this selection of songs. Most of my personal favorites are included in this CD series.
three out of four work.......2007-03-27
There are four cds in this box. Three worked fine but the freebie didn't work at all. I returned it to you and you promptly replaced the whole set. Same problem--three out of the four work fine but the Acoustic Selection still won't run. Since I wanted the three, I just gave up on the fourth one. Outside of that I'm very satisfied.
acoustic collection : 1999-2002.......2007-01-19
only problem with this package, it contains three previously released cd's that i already have. if you do not have them it is an excellent buy.
Great collection of Dolly parton.......2007-01-10
Although this collection contains many re-issues, the selections are very good. The included DVD adds to the package's value.
Acoustic music is so much richer than the electronic instruments used by
many current performers. It down to earth, back to the basics, for
a excellent collection of country music.
Back to Her Roots.......2007-01-10
Dolly Parton is a wonderful acoustic performer. Her Appalachian roots shine through in the Bluegrass selections in this set. I liked (with a few exceptions) the songs chosen, and the players were marvellous.

Leadbelly's Last Sessions is a remarkable document. Recorded over the course of three nights in 1948, approximately one year before his death, Sessions constitutes the only commercial recordings of Leadbelly ever made on magnetic tape. The sound here is still primitive by most standards, but it's a vast improvement over the quality of his earlier sides. On this four-disc collection, Huddie Ledbetter sets down as much of his repertoire as he could, from field hollers, blues, and country & western songs to children's tunes, ballads, autobiographical pieces, and popular hits of the day. The tape continues to roll between takes, catching Leadbelly's shifts of moods and changes of interest. He didn't know these would be his last recordings, of course, but he seems to have saved something special for these performances, which are as freewheeling, charming, and authoritative as anything he ever recorded. --Daniel Durchholz
Album Description

Produced and annotated by Frederic Ramsey, Jr. Reissue compiled and annotated by Anthony Seeger, Matt Walters and Jeff Place. "Rich in tone and pungent with history and personality." -Goldmine
Customer Reviews:
A must have but, but not necissarily definative........2003-04-16
These four disks are recorded on analog audio tape. The only one existing of Leadbelly. The recodings were made on two or three seperate nights. Since the first night leadbelly didn't bring his guitar he sings acapella most of the first disk. The other three disks have his 12 string acompanyment. The sound quality becomes very apparent here. Unlike most of his records you can hear all 12 strings! It sounds beautiful. Another benefit of these being on audio tape is that Leadbelly can potentially play a song much longer than in prior recording. However he seldom does. Being more informal than a recoding studio ti also gives insight as to what Leadbelly's set list may have been like at a concert or everyday party. Though these individual song versions may not be the definative versions, or Leadbelly at his best, all these songs are gems and a must have for any folk, blues, or country collection.
Towards the end of the disks Leadbellys wife Martha sings with him. In all due respect to Martha she sort of slows the momentum of this collection down. Though I'm sure Leadbelly always encouraged people to sing along with his songs. The brightest gem of this collection may be listening to Leadbelly laugh at his own singing on the funny classic, Diggin' My Potatoes. Or being able to hear him slap his knee on Salty Dog.
Summary: Sping for it. Its something you won't find on any other collection
The sweetest from the Sweet Singer of the Swamplands.......2003-01-22
Prior to this record, Huddie Ledbetter was confined to the limitations of the recording technology of the day. This resulted in an abundance of two-to-three minute long gems (as much as would fit on an acetate disc) which, while brilliant, obscured the essence of Leadbelly's artistry as a "songster". Fortunately for us and the evolution of popular music as a whole, shortly before this giant of a man (who survived having his throat cut, being shot at by the chain-gang boss as he escaped with ball-and-chain in hand, a suicide attempt as a last resort from prison, and the finicky tastes of New York high society which regarded him as little more than an amazing novelty) succumbed to Lou Gehrig's Disease, new technology was introduced that allowed him to loosen up and let the music flow naturally.
And a motherlode of music it is. While the first CD is comprised of accapella field hollers and spirituals, the other three are filled with some of the most incredible guitar work you'll ever hear, bar none. As Huddie (pronounced Hyoo-dee) himself explains to the listener, he learned guitar "sittin' by the bass-side of the piana" in honky-tonks on Shreveport, Louisiana's Fannin Street. Therefore his aggressive 12-string guitar style is informed by a rollicking boogie-woogie barrelhouse/ragtime feel, that often sounds like several guitarists at once. This is best exemplified in his own ode to Fannin Street, "Cry For Me", and the rag "Easy, Mr. Tom", which has enjoyed many permutations, "Hot Dog" by Blind Lemon Jefferson and "Cannonball Rag" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band among them. As Leadbelly comments as the tune ends, "It's so easy when you know how."
Leadbelly knew some thousand songs, and this collection is merely the tip of the iceberg. It includes some of his best-known work, "Goodnight Irene", "Grey Goose", "Midnight Special", and his version of "Easy Rider" ("rider" was slang for girlfriend). It also includes his interpretations of the work of Stephen Foster (of "Camptown Races" fame, and the first "pop star"), some of the most beautiful and haunting melodies, "Springtime in the Rockies" and "I'm Alone Because I Love You". "Salty Dog" finds him clapping the beat between guitar strums. He even sings a whole song in pig-latin (after explaining what pig-latin is). Also included is "Sweet Mary", written for Governor Pat Neff, which won him a pardon from prison ("If I had you Gov'na Neff like you got me/ I'd wake up in the mornin' I'd set you free...")
Occasionally he pauses to take a drink or serve up an anecdote to set up a song, strumming a chord to tune as he speaks. You feel as though you're in the room with him, watching his roughened hands play across the strings.
Sadly, perhaps his greatest known song, popularized by Nirvana, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (also called "In the Pines"), is missing from this collection. But apparently Kurt Cobain was introduced to Leadbelly through Last Sessions, and it was one of his favorite albums. Also regrettably missing is "John Hardy", the outlaw ballad rocked up by Uncle Tupelo.
Leadbelly is unique among much early blues music, which seems to often be perceived as depressing. Leadbelly's work is uplifting, joyous, funny (and fun), and perfect for inspiring a good mood. There's nothing stale about it-- it's as vibrant as the day it was set to tape. As Leadbelly sings, "Somebody should ask you people who made up this song/ Tell 'em Huddie Ledbetter done been here and gone..."
Essential, but not the best set for casual listening.......2000-11-11
(4 CDs: 64'/60'/63'/64') I entirely agree that this is indeed essential Lead Belly. However, I would point out to the unwary buyer that these are not commercial studio takes; they were recorded by Frederic Ramsey Jr. in his home, in a room set up as a makeshift studio. Sound is not a problem, but the CDs contain some talk - not only Lead Belly's introductions to the songs, as he frequently gave on his recordings, but there is also some lengthier discussion, including with the other people in the room. In addition, several "songs" are mere fragments. All this is invaluable to any serious folk music fan, but on the other hand it can be quite distracting for casual listening. These are CDs that you will want to play in order to study them...
Silver City Bound.......2000-06-27
I love the song Silver City Bound on this box set. It is intense, beautiful and deeply moving as great blues can be. There are a lot of classic folk and blues songs here from Lead Belly's huge repertoire. Lead Belly is one of my favourite blues artists and these discs have the man in great spirit. I recommend this.
This is the greatest true blues collection ever........1999-10-24
You are allowed to hear conversations between Leadbelly and his wife. This is a true recording session done in an apartment living room rather than in a studio. This is what true blues is about.

When folk revivalists all of a sudden became fascinated with country-blues performers of the early 20th century, no one had to go into the sticks to find Reverend Gary Davis. Though he'd stopped recording, Davis was an active street singer and preacher in Harlem throughout the 1940s. In the 1950s, folklorists, fans, and followers began to seek him out to hear him play, record him, and learn from him. Stefan Grossman, now a respected guitarist in his own right, was one of his longtime students, and he's compiled this wonderful three-disc box set, complete with detailed song notes and an essay that explores Davis's pre-New York days. Disc 1 features rare recordings made by Columbia University student John Gibbons in 1958 and 1959, and it focuses mostly on Davis's instrumental prowess: a thoroughly matchless fingerpicking guitar style that fused bits of jazz, blues, and ragtime into a highly personal technique. In addition to the many instrumentals on the first disc, there are some of Davis's most spellbinding vocal performances, especially "Crucifixion" (which blends singing and preaching) and "Don't Know Where to Go." Disc 2 includes home recordings from the mid-1960s, while the final disc of live recordings shows off his stage charisma and command. Demons and Angels clearly displays the breadth of Reverend Gary Davis's talent and material--from pop songs to "holy blues" and age-old folk--and is quite a welcome boon to his devoted fans and anyone else looking to discover one of the genre's inimitable talents. Beyond that, it will have aspiring (and even accomplished) acoustic guitarists staying up half the night trying to figure out exactly how the good Reverend played what he played. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Not for Gary Davis newbies.......2007-03-17
This is a 'must own' for those who are serious about Gary Davis' music. It is filled with sloppy outtakes of tunes rarely recorded (and obviously rarely practiced), licks he didn't attempt in performance, and some incredible playing failures that only further show his mastery of the instrument. In other words, in here aren't so much polished gems of performance but the raw and uncut rock that might be mined for future musicianship.
A whole disc is devoted to recordings of him playing in his house. The listener will find that the mic is often moved around loudly, people in the house talk in the background, and various other ambient noises can be heard. Thus, again do not expect a polished recordings from a studio. Instead, expect a lazy performance of a Sunday afternoon sitting in his parlor.
I would recommend that newbies start with "Pure Religion, Bad Company", "Harlem Street Singer" and "Live at Newport" as the first discs in a set. I first bought Pure Religion, Bad Company almost twenty years ago and in the intervening years I've had to rebuy it three times - because before the advent of the MP3 player, I actually wore the discs out. I love that disc beyond all reason (in fact, the only other disc I've worn out through repeated playing was Tom Waits' Big Time).
All that said, if you're a serious Gary Davis head, then BUY THIS DISC SET. And if you're attempting to play Country Blues, this is an absolutely MANDATORY BUY. If you listen carefully, you will notice all sorts of new licks, counterpoint progressions, and variations on his more well known songs. That alone is worth the price of admission.
This material will show you the warts of his playing. His musical doodles. The limits of his amazing virtuosity, even as he was in the twilight years of his life. I cannot thank Stefan Grossman and the publisher enough for this disc set.
A Rich and Rewarding Box Set.......2005-02-08
Rev. Gary Davis is a giant of acoustic blues & gospel who is enjoying renewed interest. This impressive box set contains superior sound compared to the Riverside albums. Listening to the mostly live versions of classic Davis songs on this set yields rich rewards. Given to improvisation on many songs, he varies his picking and sometimes changes the verse order or the words in the verses. For example, the album Gospel, Blues and Street Songs on the Riverside Records label has a studio version (1956) of Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning that has Davis beginning the song with a verse, followed by the Chorus. By the time Davis plays it live at Columbia University sometime around '59 he is starting the song with the Chorus. Furthermore the verse that began, "Sister, don't stop praying . . . " is now, "Father, don't stop praying . . . " He also adds a new verse. The song Whistlin' Blues is noted by Grossman as the only song in all of Davis' recorded repertoire in an altered tuning (low to high - DADF#AB). The set contains songs that are not available anywhere else.
The box set is done right and includes a 35-page book the size of the box. Contained in the book are a 6-page bio, song lyrics, the songs key, some historical perspective for most of the songs, and a long list of published & online resources.
Unexpected,terrific music.Too marvelous for words!!!.......2002-06-22
Blind Gary Davis, best known as Reverend Gary Davis, since he bacame a preacher,1933,may be the most terrific, outstanding guitar player of the blues and gospel history with Blind Blake. His ragtime style, combined with this particular South Carolina touch, makes him one of the most gifted and impressive musicians of all times.Born in Laurens County,South Carolina,April 30,1896,he lived enough to be rediscovered in the early sixties, while he was a street singer in Harlem;he lived until 1972,and died May 5,one week after his 76th birthday,on his way to a concert date.THis three CD set, full of treasures,is issued by Stefan Grossman, who was a pupil of the Reverend. These are unissued recordings: CD 1 was recorded at the Columbia University,1958-1959;CD 2 was recorded at home,1964-1966;and CD 3 comes from concert dates,1962-1966.Of course,it includes some amazing music;Gary Davis was really alone in his field, that way of playing and singing sacred songs with this Carolina touch;his incredible, extremely difficult picking style (surely the most difficult one with Blind Blake's) ,with many ragtime touches,is a real delight. And I don't speak of the guitar he's playing;I just hope I'll have the opportunity to play such an instrument once in my life.
Gary Davis stopped playing blues in the fourties, and it's a great chance to hear him play it here.BUt if you buy this set, please start listening to "sporting life blues",(no,it's not Brownie McGhee's,even if the melody and chords are close to it),this is an amazing guitar solo which will drive you directly into Gary Davis' music. And Lord, what a sound!!!I won't try to tell you about all the songs, there are too many, and they're all amazing;the only regret I have, like another reviewer said,is that Gary Davis' masterpiece,"death don't have no mercy",doesn't figure here.Too bad.But there are other masterpieces: "God's gonna separate",for example;or many others.Nothing here has to be rejected. This here is an absolute concentrate of talent.Gary Davis is one of my favorite musicians for twenty years, one of my favorite guitar players,of course, and one of the most magnificent voices I've ever heard also.I think this 3 CD set is the first opus to buy,if you really wish to be introduced to the Reverend's music.Every minute of music played or sung by Gary Davis is one of the most essential ones of all times,so don't miss this magnificent set, full of things that have never been heard, full of noise and fury. Some of the most important music of the 20th century is here. The booklet is a fine one,and there are many lyrics transcribed.Sorry, you won't find the tablatures. So,try to find the Reverend's chords;good luck, sincerely.
Must Have For Fan's And Students Of Reverend Gary Davis.......2001-07-29
As a former student of Brother Davis($5 a guitar lesson), I was thrilled to hear fresh material after all these years. Even the old familiar tunes have yet new variations. I can't wait to check some of them out on the guitar. This three CD set is really a fantastic addition to my Reverend Gary Davis collection. I wonder what else Stephan Grossman(Demons Producer) is sitting on???...Joel

No independent label has surveyed a wider, deeper expanse of the American musical grain than Rounder Records has done since 1971. In celebrating the label's 30th anniversary, this budget-priced anthology presents 68 gems from the archives without duplicating a single artist. Rather than a linear progression through time or genre, the four-disc set hopscotches all over the musical map, from the blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell to the bluegrass of Alison Krauss, from the Texas country of Jimmie Dale Gilmore to the Celtic fiddle of Natalie MacMaster. Some of the juxtapositions are a little jarring: the Mardi Gras chants of Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias give way to the Hawaiian guitars of the Tau Moe Family, while the soulful groove of Walter "Wolfman" Washington leads into the Klezmer Conservatory Band. But listeners whose tastes are as eclectic as Rounder's will find the set a treasure trove of discovery. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Another Great Rounder Collection.......2005-02-02
Sure, it's a Rounder marketing product. A collection of their artists, some new, some familiar, offered to entice us to buy.... NICE JOB Rounder! This is also another home run collection of top quality artists presented with fine liner notes and exceptional production. Get it! LOVE IT!
Well Done Compilation - with a Caveat.......2001-12-27
This is a typically well organized Rounder compilation, with some impressive artists included. However, it should be noted that these are interpretations of older "roots" tunes done by Rounder label artists, rather than the originals. As such, Scott Billington, who wrote the liner notes, does himself (and us) a bit of a disservice by referring dismissively to the original versions of these tunes as a "scratchy collection of old recordings". Were it not for that very "scratchy collection", this four-disc set would not be here for us to enjoy.
Introduction to American Music.......2001-11-14
Rounder Records has always done an incredible job of putting together compilations and making the music sound alive. This collection celebrates 30 years of Rounder, and is a great overview of the label, as well as a taster for anyone looking to check out some truly alternative music. The mixture is very eclectic; much like American culture, blending and weaving through musical styles. The set features Blues, Folk, Cajun, Bluegrass, Celtic and much more.
A highly recommended listening experience.
A Roots Music State of the Union........2001-10-30
Think of this as an update on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Showing up on the heels of the wide success of the "O Brother..." soundtrack and just before the PBS American Roots Music series, this is a worthy collection of samples of the work of contemporary artists working in the earthy music forms from whence it all sprang. From acapella gospel to zydeco with old-time, bluegrass, blues, New Orleans brass and Hawaiian tunes sandwiched in between. What can you say? It's Rounder, for Pete's sake!

Amazon.com essential recording
Lightnin' Hopkins, the seminal Texas bluesman, was rediscovered in the 1960s when the folk revival made folk and country-blues musicians hot news. This seven-CD set includes much of Hopkins's work during that period, though he recorded for so many different labels that getting everything is well-nigh impossible. This is a good start, though, including as it does some concert recordings in addition to studio reissues and interviews. Hopkins's mastery of mood and technique makes this a chronicle not only of historical interest, but musical as well; while Hopkins's musical style didn't change much over the course of his multidecade career, he was certainly among the best at what he did. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Down home and soulful.......2007-04-11
For a Hopkins fan or a music historian this set is fantastic. Sam Hopkins was a master story-teller - period - and there is a lot of spoken material that inter-weaves his personal history, regional blues history, and general reflections from a different time and a predominantly rural black culture. Having grown up in the rural South as a small boy, I sat at the feet of such story tellers for hours transformed by their spell. That said, if one only wants to listen to Sam Hopkins's music, there are better recordings or at least better quality recordings and one can obtain a suitable collection for less dough. This is a must-have set for a special sub-genre of enthusiasts and for them it is a rare treasure, indeed.
indescriptible.......2007-03-17
SON SOLO 7 DISCOS..REUNEN LAS GRABACIONES DE HOPKINS PARA prestige Y bluesville EN UN PERIODO DE 4 AÑOS!! ES NADA MAS QUE ESO...Y ES ABSOLUTAMENTE RECOMENDABLE Y DE ESCUCHA OBLIGATORIA PARA QUIEN AME EL BLUES!!!! 112 TEMAS QUE RETRATAN TODA UNA VIDA...EL CONCIERTO DE SWARTHMORE, PREVIAMENTE INEDITO, ES ESENCIAL PARA COMPRENDER EL REVIVAL DEL BLUES EN LOS '60! REALMENTE, UNA EDICION MARAVILLOSA, DIGNA DE UN ARTISTA UNICO EN SU TIPO!
Awesome Collection.......2006-02-25
Yes, it is expensive but if you are interested in the blues then it's a really good deal. As has already been explained, the 7th disc is only interviews. But the 6 discs of music are incredible. I had to work up my nerve to make this purchase a few years ago. Luckily, I did get a discount but I still say it's worth the hefty price tag. I'm listening to 'Last Night Blues' right now and it's just as haunting today as it was when I first bought the set.
Blues in a box set.......2001-08-11
This seven disk, expensive box set is often a difficult pill to swallow, but I am glad that I did. On six disks twelve Lightnin' albums from the 60's are combined. If you are interested in Lightnin', do the math. The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Rocordings is a value. The seventh disk is full of interviews that may seem dull to some, but to a fan willing to spend $ to get the blues they are a welcome addition. A very interesting way to learn about the man is from his own voice in interviews like these. The liner notes are a simple histoy, a few pictures and a discography. Again, I am glad I bought it.
Rated Five Stars With A Footnote.......2001-04-11
This is one fantastic collection of music! However, I was a little disappointed by the apparent lack of effort that went into the finished product. With such a comprehensive assortment of music, I expected to find at least liner notes or a booklet with some biographical material or reviews. Also, it should be noted that the final disk in this set is only spoken word. While the novelty of it is awesome, and you get to here Lightnin's stories first hand, at my first listening I was somewhat off set because I wasn't expecting it. However, those things aside, this set is worth every penny!

Album Description
Gourd Music is proud to present a box set of its three critically acclaimed recordings of the music of the Shakers. The set is composed of Simple Gifts, Tree of Life and Music On The Mountain arranged and produced by guitarist William Coulter and Cellist Barry Phillips.
Exuberant dance tunes, lively marches and reverent hymns were part of the daily lives and worship of the Shakers, who flourished in mid-19th century America.
Like their highly-prized crafts, the Shakers' music was an outward expression of their faith and celebrated their ideals of simplicity and love.
From the title track (made famous by Aaron Copland in Appalachian Spring) to little-known gems from the Shakers' vast treasury of song, these are melodies born directly of the Shakers' spiritual life, yet deeply rooted in the Anglo-American folk tradition - music to cheer the heart and lift the spirit.

--John Morthland

good times of old England.......2002-07-09
These days there's a lot of interest in American folk music, both in the authentic stuff (Ralph Stanley, Dock Boggs, Charley Patton, et al.) and in the revival, itself undergoing something of a revival. All to the good, and may it continue. Meantime, it's wise to remember that much of our own folk music came from the British Isles and that the United Kingdom has had its own very interesting revival going on over the past half-century.
As the title suggests, the Acoustic Folk Box doesn't cover quite all of it. By definition seminal plugged-in bands such as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span aren't here, but that's okay. Their recordings are readily available, and besides, many of the musicians who played in those outfits (e.g., Sandy Denny, Dave Swarbrick, Maddy Prior) are here by themselves or in other groups. Anyway, that detail aside, you could hardly ask for a better introduction to the British revival. Even those who have followed it as closely as one can from this side of the water will find a whole lot that's unfamiliar here, for example the long-forgotten Julie Felix's fine reading of the antique "Geordie" or Pete Morton's anthemic original "Another Train." Good as they are, these aren't the best. Fact of the matter, the adjective "best" is hard to apply here, inasmuch as the competition is ridiculously intense. Not every piece is great, of course -- the political songs, of which there are happily a minimum, tend to be more didactic than musical -- but there is so much good stuff here that you could listen to it for years, finding something new on each hearing.
I'm not even sure I can list all my favorites, or even if I've figured out yet what they are. I will say, though, that Robin and Barry Dransfield's "The Rout of the Blues" reminds me of how criminally underrecorded these North Country traditionalists were. Also missing in action, and missed sorely, are Nic Jones and Anne Briggs -- though surely the latter could be better represented than by the warhorse "She Moves Through the Fair." On the other hand, the version of Robin Williamson's "First Girl I Loved" is different from the one on the Incredible String Band's 5000 Spirits, and even more beautifully rendered. A few other highlights at random: the Etchingham Steam Band's "Hard Times of Old England"; Bill Caddick's "John O'Dreams"; the Young Tradition's "Lyke Wake Dirge"; Oak's "Scan's Polkas"; New Victory Band's "Harper's Frolick/Bonny Kate"; June Tabor's "Lay This Body Down." And more. And still more. In short: essential.
