You want guitar precision, listen to Jim Hall. You want perfect pitch, listen to Ella Fitzgerald. You want raw, electrifying, frightful, unruly, mesmerizing, aggressive, urgent, and occasionally brilliant gutbuckets of sound, listen to Jimi Hendrix's Monday morning Woodstock finale. Most of the masses had gone home, Jimi was nervous, his band unrehearsed, and the sound was as muddy as the grounds, but so what? In August of 1969, Hendrix's band, which he dubbed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows for this performance, was in a period of transition between the heavy psychedelic bluesy Experience and the more soulful, rhythmically dynamic Band of Gypsys. The two percussionists and a rhythm guitarist who augment Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Gypsy bassist Billy Cox are either mixed out by the engineer or drowned out by Hendrix's ferocious attack. Throughout the intense performance, finally restored here in sequential order and (almost, save for two Larry Lee vocals) in its entirety, Hendrix seems to touch on every musical style--from jazz to blues to funk to soul to metal, and even a few (fusion, punk) that weren't christened yet. There are crisper Hendrix shows out there, but none more explosive or more historic. --Marc Greilsamer

Hendrix at Woodstock.......2007-04-10
A nice collection of Hendrix highlights from Woodstock.....not too many of these sort of Woodstock Highlights for individual artists exist to my knowledge...this one is a real keeper.
Get the DVD instead?.......2005-12-22
Now that a double dvd of Jimi's Woodstock gig has been released, remixed by Eddie Kramer (including a 5.1 surround mix), there's not much need for this CD, especially since the dvd set is cheaper. Just beware that the older single dvd release bears the same title as the new one; "Live At Woodstock".
one word - WOW.......2005-02-22
As I am listening to Jimi Hendrix from any of his cd's I am always amazed in some way. His guitar skills are awesome and really nobody will ever be like him again. Over 50 percent of this cd is a guitar solo which really is all chopped up and spread throughout all the songs. "Star Spangled Banner" track is a perfect example of his guitar skills. "Jam Back at the House" is also very cool because of how he changes every minute and goes into a complete different solo. Also, the songs are much longer. The regular album songs that are only 3-5 minutes on his other cd range from 5-13 minutes on this 2-disc set. "Voodoo Child" is over 13 minutes long and its played faster then the album version. Overall all the songs are great and this would be a awesome set to add to your Hendrix collection.
I don't know why the editorial review and also the little booklet say that this is not his best performance, his guitar wasn't tuned for this, or they weren't good because none of them knew what they were playing. I thought it was a awesome performance. As Jimi puts it he was just jamming. I thought that was a cool line. It was like he didn't care if the audience left or what they thought, because he was just jamming.

Woodstock The Summer Of Love With Jimi Hendrix!.......2004-09-12
Live at Woodstock was great for Jimi Hendrix, but as far as his Gypsy Sun & Rainbows Band including Juma Sultan on percussion, Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Velez on percussion they where way out of key as far as sound wise. Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Jimi Hendrix played great together that very last day of Woodstock. This is truely a great performence including the entire set unlike the video Woodstock. Their are endless jams on this one including Message To Love running seven minutes and twenty one seconds wow! Hear My Train A Comin running 9:49, Spanish Castle Magic 7:05, and Jam Back At The House running 7:44 wow a great jam band.
Then second set is just as great with a great performence of Voodoo Chile(slight return) running 13:40). I also loved the jams titled Woodstock Improvisation, and Villanova Junction. The funny thing about the whole concert is the last song which is in my book the worst song titled Hey Joe other than that last song this performence is really good just with the three members. Larry Lee lacks being in tune for the whole concert they really cut him out on this recording the only song you really can hear his out of tune guitar is on Spanish Castle Magic. Their is a huge booklet included with the CD that explains the whole story behind the woodstock legacy. This is truely a must have Jimi Hendrix live concert!
Simply Phenomenal, A Milestone For Hendrix and Woodstock.......2004-07-31
Live At Woodstock(1969).The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Live Performance at 1969's Woodstock.
After the legendary previous performances at 1969's Woodstock, which included bands like Sly, the Family Stone, The Who, Santana, Joe Cocker, and the newly minted Crosby, Stills, and Nash, at 9 'O Clock on August 18th, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played Woodstock's most memorable performance, and one of the greatest of all-time. Featuring the virtuoso guitar talents of Jimi Hendrix, often hailed as the best guitarist ever, amidst bad weather and rowdy crowds the Jimi Hendrix experience played their heart out for nearly 2 and a half hours, and thankfully that concert was taped, and released for Hendrix fan's enjoyment. Below you will see how The Jimi Hendrix Experience's legendary performance at Woodstock turned out..
Track Selection-
Being new to Hendrix, I was taken on an unexpected but ultimately rewarding ride, as other than Rock N Roll classics 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze' and 'Hey Joe', all the rest of these tracks were new to me. Songs such as 'Hear My Train A Comin', 'Spanish Castle Magic', 'Jam Back At The House', and 'Voodoo Child(Slight Return)' are basically examples of Hendrix's Guitar Mastery, his blistering solos encapsulating the echoes of time and talent to show he was surely a guitar god. 'Izzabella', 'Red House', 'Lover Man', and 'Villanova Junction' are all bluesy Hard Rockers that showcase magnificent musicianship, and could easily have been hits. 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze', 'Hey Joe', and the minor hit 'Fire' are all thankfully included here to showcase Hendrix's biggest hits, but I wish he would have played more. Overall I think the Track Selection is excellent, and couldn't have asked for it to be any better! 5/5
Sound Quality-
For a bootleg of a concert in 1969, Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance sounds outstanding! The guitar solos and riffs blare out the speakers as if you were right there in the muddy crowd at Woodstock, Hendrix's vocals are clean, crisp, and easy to hear, and the bass and drums are clearly there and are easily hearable among the more obvious guitar. Surprisingly, some of the best Sound Quality I've ever heard from a live performance! 5/5
Band Performance-
What more can I say? Jimi Hendrix is in peak form here, his blistering solos and bluesy riffs, unknown at the time still retain their unmistakeable glory over 35 years later, and the backup band, which includes the bass and drums, dishes out a legendary performance alongside Hendrix. Basically, the Band Performance is flawless, perfect, OUTSTANDING! 5/5
Crowd Interaction-
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's concert at Woodstock boasts quite a lot of Crowd Interaction, as Hendrix usually gives a few words after every song, joking and informing throughout, and the crowd shouts often to Hendrix to 'TURN IT UP!', and it all makes for a very interesting experience!
Overall, The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance at Woodstock is unmistakenly legendary, classic and brilliant in every way, and now stands as one of my favorite Live recordings. Since I was so impressed with this, I expect to pick up many more Hendrix albums in the next few visits to the CD store!
HIGHLY RECOMMENED TO FANS OF HENDRIX, ROCK IN GENERAL, BLUES, AND ANYBODY WHO ENJOYS LIVE RECORDINGS! SIMPLY EPIC, PHENOMENOL, BEAUTIFUL, AND DEFINITELY LOUD!

It's Dawn Again.......2004-11-04
Although it's the later albums of The Three Suns (such as "Movin' and Groovin'") that have secured their reputation among lounge music fans, I find their earlier work (such as this volume) much more satisfying. For one thing, this is the Suns as a guitar/organ/accordion trio, pure and simple. The music is as funereal as it is snappy; as creepy as it is joyous; a combination not easy to achieve. Alfred Hitchcock didn't choose the music of The Three Suns for his 1948 thriller "Rope" for no reason.
The musicianship of these guys is phenomenal; they could play anything. Although the sound is early 50's mono, it's more than adequate. The tracks were expertly remastered from broadcast transcription discs (not 78s). This is music from the dawn of the lounge music genre, permeated with the atmosphere of its time, but somehow also timeless. It's a curious but very satisfying musical cocktail.

It may be cute and cuddly to link Mudhoney with the grunge generation of the Pacific Northwest's early nineties, but even after a cup of coffee in the majors the Seattle foursome continues to endure more then a decade after the genre was deemed defunct. Album number nine could be its most electrifying record since Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, contrasting a band with a burgeoning social conscience, but one that shows no signs of growing old. Barreling along with the sodden riffs of guitarist Steve Turner and a rhythm section that overflows in chaos (see the instrumental "A Brief Celebration of Indifference"), vocalist Mark Arm is aping maturity, spitting a soured societal fury over D.C. demigods ("Hard-on For War"), plodding expectations ("Where is the Future") and repeat hangovers ("Let's Drop In," complete with female harmonies and Memphis-style horns). Eighteen years have come and gone, but Mudhoney remains. --Scott Holter
Album Description
For 18 years, Mudhoney has proved to be one of the most consistently electrifying acts to survive the grunge implosion, whatever that was. The wolfish howls of singer Mark Arm, soulful splatterings of guitarist Steve Turner, and frenzied fills of drummer Dan Peters have produced nine albums to date, most of which are considered neo-garage classics. Original bassist Matt Lukin has been replaced by the inimitable Australian Guy Maddison. "Under A Billion Suns" is performed with the same amplified urgency of their previous work. Mudhoney has never swayed from their vision of making really loud rock, and this album is no exception. Produced by three notable knobsters, Phil Ek, Johnny Sangster, and Tucker Martine, and boasting a blaring horn section, this record exposes a more snidely political-fueled side of our shaggy heroes, but one revealed through the invariables of the Mudhoney recipe: thick, soggy punk riffs and underrated guitar dynamics, psychedelic tangents! ,! and snot-nosed finger pointing. Loud and fierce.
Customer Reviews:
Storm Surge .......2006-08-23
Mudhoney is still intact, it's all here: The surging, relentless power-sludge welling up out of the rumbling bass, drums and guitar drone complete with crashing waves of squirrelly soloing.
The eyebrow-raising addition of horns works in every way it shouldn't. Rather than punctuate the tracks, they meld right in with the drone and add color and most importantly power, upping the intensity.
The apocalyptic lyrical pronouncements are hurled down the mountain by Mark Arm as a disgusted Old Testament prophet in the mood for judgment and retribution. A true tribal elder, Mr. Arm has always stood apart from run of the mill punk rock critics because his criticisms come from a place of interior shame and frustration, not just anger. He has seen the enemy and the enemy is us.
The songs:
The Bush-Cheney Iraq adventure rant Hard-On For War first turned up on Thurston Moore's MP3 protest song site and has justly gained much attention. It rocks hard and protests loudly.
In a Rolling Stone magazine play list, Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam said Under A Billion Suns was the best Mudhoney album ever and called out I Saw The Light as his favorite. No argument here.
The All Music Guide reviewer picked out Let's Drop In for special attention. This song is a Mudhoney groover along the lines of Real Low Vibe where the horns are especially effective. Pretty cool.
My personal pick for best track is the album closer Blindspots. This relentless hard rocker takes me back to the grunge rock glories of old. It must be played loud, very loud. Blindness is the best defense / Senselessness is the best defense.
Blast from the past.......2006-08-10
Mudhoney have always refused to be a part of the 'mainstream' despite the fact that in the late 80s they were among the originators of grunge. As a matter of fact they have always celebrated their 'independent' status and this is something they do not forget to do in their new album. In 'Under a Billion Suns' they utilise their old acid grunge recipes, add to the mix a healthy dose of horn arrangements and, while their 'old' age has by now become pretty obvious, they manage to serve us with quite a few refreshments which are especially delightful for their old fans. This album won't change your life, it's probably not the first Mudhoney record one should buy but it's well worth a few spins in your player. Do not ignore it!
Rawk!.......2006-07-22
I am so trapped on old Mud that I was skeptical about this at first, but they are still very much alive, and after a few listens this completely blew me away. "Hard-On For War" was the icebreaker and then it was all bliss from there..
Good........2006-05-18
Very good. I like it alot, i'd give it more of a 4.5 stars. Hard on for War is funny and true, I love the fact that Mudhoney tackled politics without a sense of self righteousness or overblown arrogance.
Long Live Mudhoney........2006-04-07
This is a great album. 17-18 years on, Mudhoney do not let off. Too bad Lukin is not around but that fact is beside the point. Mudhoney are the masters of rock. Pure rock and roll my friends. These boys do not mess around. Hard On For War is one of the best songs I have heard in the last ten years. Mudhoney remains vital, fresh, and ready to kick the [...] out of modern music which is pretty much complete garbage. These guys never sold out and make no bones about it. Long live Mudhoney.

A Diamond in the Rough.......2007-03-28
I just finished playing this import for the 5th or 6th time and I am totally bedazzled by it. It's New Zealand's answer to Pet Sounds. I sure hope Brian Wilson has given this a listen. I find this group a breath of fresh air and I would catagorize it as a "feel good harmonic masterpiece" from start to finish. The harmonies will haunt you and have you journey to the 60's but with a 00's newness. I would say two things (1) I hope they are discovered here in America and (2) run out and find this cd and listen to it in your car, in your bed and every morning when you need a shot of " cheer " - it is the best breakfast treat you had in a long time.

Brighter Than A Thousand Suns by Killing Joke.......2007-02-21
Besides one song that is cringeworthy as soon as the chorus appears, "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" is a melancholy, powerful, melodious, and heartwrenching album. In between "Night Time" and "Outside The Gate" in terms of musical evolution as well as discography, it continues the poppy and dancy direction the band was hell bent on at that time in its career, and has many of the attributes of 80s new wave, or synth pop, or whatever you want to call it, but is far beyond simplicity or song hooks for the sake of them.
The lyrics aren't a walk in the park either, as the Joke, depending on the album, put the time into their lyrics they put into their words. As an aside, whoever put the concept for their video for the song "Sanity" off the album together is a genius, because he (or she) took imagery from the lyric and captured the feeling of the song perfectly. Some of Killing Joke's videos are very bad, as is the case with most bands, but some, like the one for "Love Like Blood" off the aforementioned "Night Time" album and, again, "Sanity," are deep and thoughtful. Just like "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns."
one of a kind.......2006-06-18
Now, I know killing joke has punk rock roots and 90% of their albums are hard rock or punk, But if I was them I would never have ventured away from the sound they had on this album and the nighttime album. Every song on this album (sanity, chessboards, and southern sky especially) has fluidity and sound quality far superior to any of their harder albums. I wish they had more albums like this. The vocals are in their element and the synth is more prominent than in other albums. I am a huge fan of all types of music from 80's to death metal, and this this is the album that is my favorite by far.
Not a Bad Album!.......2006-03-02
This is Killing Joke's poppy side. Poppier than Night Time! There are great songs to listen to here: Adorations, Chessboards, Sanity, Love Of The Masses, Wintergardens, Victory, Twilight Of The Mortal,... The only song I did not like is A Southern Sky, it has the cheesiest chorus I've ever heard! Ha ha, but don't let that discourage you from buying this album, it is a very solid follow-up to Night Time and way better than the awful Outside The Gate. Great for any music lover's collection and money well spent!
A not quite shining effort.......2005-10-02
The album title 'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns' is taken from a man's description of witnessing a nuclear explosion, is a brilliant album name, and for Killing Joke, considering the apocalyptic imagery, its also especially fitting. Oddly enough however this is propbably the least apocalypitc album put out by Killing Joke, both lyrically and sound wise. The music is more dance inflected than before, synths and keyboards dominate, and the whole proceeding is smoothe and slick. Recorded at a time when internal problems were once again troubling the band (infact the next album 'Outside The Gate' would feature only Coleman and Geordie) it seems as though the band aren't giving there full focus and attention to 'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns'.
The biggest loss of this album is that normally brilliant and savage guitar of Geordie, which had so long been the centre piece of Killing Joke albums, is pushed down in the mix or just not let loose as before. Its this loss that will bother fans of the previous albums the most (and indeed later albums as well when they're brought back into the for). Theres a distinct lack of bite here. But thats not the only problem, the drums that only a few albums ago on 'Fire Dances' had been so wild and tribal is now mechanical and restrained. Even Jaz's usually ominous synth work is tone down and no longer sends chills up the spine as it had previously done.
Not too say that this is a terrible album though, it just doesn't play to the bands strenghts. Lyrically while not focussing on the usually doom saying end of the world propheseys of the past, Jaz does display some of his best word craft on this album. 'Chessboards' in particular features possibly some of the strongest lyrics the band has ever put down. Its a more hopeful album than ever before, while still tinged with those strange Killing Joke politics. Sadly the music doesn't hold up to the lyrics and so the whole album kind of falls apart. The disaster that was 'Outside The Gate' ensures that this isn't usually seen as point things turned sour for the band, but on closer inspection the rot had already set in.

A Sleepy-Time Treasure!.......2005-06-30
I remember the Three Suns from my days growing up, when I would often hear their music being played on the radio late at night. It was a very soothing, relaxing sound and I'd soon be totally in the mood for beddy-bye. Rehearing this music today, I still grow relaxed, peaceful, and drowsy. What can be the secret to this effect I can't say, but where in other music such a description might be scathing criticism I mean it here in an entirely complimentary way: the total effect is very pleasant to my ears.
This is my favorite recording of The Three Suns. It brings together eighteen of their best songs, several aimed specifically at the "drowsy" quality mentioned above: "Twilight Time," "When Day Is Done," "Sleepy Time Gal," "Deep Purple," and "Moonlight and Roses." In addition to these are such other old-time familiar favorites as "Dardanella," "Delicado," "Laura," "Peg O' My Heart," "Sunrise Serenade," "The Very Thought of You," "Tenderly," "La Vie En Rose," and "Smoke Rings." Their "Arrivederci Roma" appears in a particularly satisfying arrangement, I find, and the panning stereo of "Stumbling," with its unique, if not quirky, effects brings back the days when stereo was a new and exciting phenomenon. "My Silent Love" and "Penthouse Serenade" round out the selection.
If you want enjoyable music to relax to, I recommend this example of the "lounge music" genre very highly, and young listeners who might not appreciate its nostalgic quality may yet delight in its smoothness, expert performances, and unique arrangements. This is 53+ minutes of the highest order of easy-listening music!

A Second Helping of Early Three Suns.......2001-01-29
This CD is a godsend for anyone trying to find playable material from The Three Suns' early stuff. Most of the tunes are snappy and upbeat. The craftmanship of the music is just awesome. These guys were GOOD. If a retro blast of Lounge Music is your cup of tea, by all means buy this.
The Three Suns shine, glow, and sparkle.......1999-05-16
This is an excellent disc for those who like very early "Lounge" music---in this case featuring a swirling organ and a zippy accordion. While a few of the tracks are dim, the great majority of them are peppy, happy, juicy songs that you will greatly enjoy. One surprise this disc held for me was the track "That's A-Plenty," because this music was none other than Jackie Gleason's "And away we go" theme. Well worth it, even though the technical aspects of the CD are less than we would like; then again, we are talking about songs recorded 50 years ago.

A Star Shone all too briefly..........2005-10-09
April Lawton, whoever she was, was simply fantastic. I'm not going to sully her reputation by a gratuitous comparison of her with Fanny's June Millington, but I will say that they were easily the equal of any of their male counterparts in the early seventies. And if you can do the almost-impossible and just tune out (giggle) "multi-instrumentalist" Sullivan's "contributions" to "Red Sun" and just fixate on April Lawton here - wow. She was a wonder. And her "Bounty On My Table" is as great a secular song about her faith as was/is David Gate's "Do You Believe He's Coming" (which was released in Gates' first solo album). No, no flashy "wee-wee-diddly-SQUEECH" "lead guitar" histrionics here, just one very talented Woman's musical statement. Like I said, though, to get the full effect of Ms. Lawton's talent, you HAVE to tune out Tommy Sullivan on this thing - honestly, his stuff sounds like a demo tape for Lynyrd Skynyrd or worse...

This CD has become instantly one of my favorites.......2005-11-14
The Three Suns, an instrumental trio of the 1940's and 1950's, performed easy listening music that usually featured an unusual combination of accordion, electric jazz guitar, and organ. They honed their skills in the 1940's playing night clubs and hotel lounges, mostly on the east coast from Washington, D.C., up to Boston. In 1944, their recording of "Twilight Time" sold in the millions and pushed them to national prominence and into the ears of future first lady Mamie Eisenhower, who is said to have counted them as her all-time favorite music group.
The Three Suns were a family affair, founded by brothers Al and Morty Nevins on guitar and accordion, respectively, and cousin Artie Dunn on organ. In 1944, their recording of Morty's original song, "Twilight Time" (later a hit for the Platters), sold in the millions and pushed them to national prominence and also into the ears of future first lady Mamie Eisenhower, who is said to have counted them as her all-time favorite music group. In 1954, Al retired from touring with the group and began producing the group's recordings. Brother Morty followed soon after, and this signalled a change in the sound of the groups recordings. Compared to their earlier efforts, which were rather lean and stripped-down arrangements, the Suns' work as the 1950's progressed showed more experimentation, sometimes lush and beautiful, sometimes more quirky and comical, with various offbeat sound effects, slight chordal dissonance, and nearly pre-psychedelic organ and accordian.
In the late 1950's, Al and Don Kirshner went on to form Aldon Music, a publishing company based in the famous Brill Building. In the 1960's, Aldon published hundreds of hits by the likes of Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and others. Al died in 1965 after a few years of heart problems that had forced him to retire from even producing the Three Suns. Morty died in 1990 and Artie in 1996.
I myself love both albums featured in this twofer CD. First off, audiophiles should not be disappointed by the sonic clarity on this CD. The CD booklet contains some background information on the band written for the CD release, and although that information does not state whether or not the original master tapes were used in the making of the CD, for all practical purposes, the quality of the recordings here make it seem as if they were. The original liner notes from each album are also included. I also love the cover to 1955's SOFT AND SWEET, featuring a soft and sweet living doll reclining on a lavishly expensive sofa with Fido nearby, and the back cover to 1957's MIDNIGHT FOR TWO, showing a nattily-dressed couple flying in tandem through a starry midnight blue sky on what looks like a rocket-powered flying broom.
As for the musical selections, being a big fan of beautiful orchestral music, I prefer SOFT AND SWEET, which is more the romantic mood music album of the two. It contains several of my favorite standards, such as "Flamingo", "Moonlight in Vermont", "Stars Fell On Alabama", and "Skylark", all with gorgeous strings complementing the Suns' unique combination of accordion, organ, and guitar. One track, "A Sinner Kissed An Angel", was co-written by Hal David, later the lyricist of Bacharach-David fame. This is no doubt one of his earliest efforts, although of course, no lyrics are sung here in this recording.
MIDNIGHT FOR TWO was no doubt recorded more with dancing in mind, as several tracks are lively and upbeat. "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You" begins with appropriately eerie ethereal organ and bells. The lone original song on the CD, Morty Nevins' "Intermission Time", contains cartoon-like sound effects and not surprisingly, what reminds one of an old theater organ. The CD ends with a bouncy rendition of the old Rimsky-Korsakoff composition, "Song of India", which is one of two bonus tracks, the other being a fairly romantic and dreamy version of "April In Portugal".
This is not very lush orchestral music, and I would suggest looking to Percy Faith or Mantovani if you prefer your instrumental standards drowned in string arrangements. I myself sometimes do, and therefore I also own almost all of the Percy Faith CD twofers thankfully reissued over the last ten years. It's just that the organ and accordion are the hallmarks of the sound of the Three Suns and are not to everyone's taste. But for me, this CD has become an instant favorite of mine, especially SOFT AND SWEET.
So this long and windy review concludes with my overwhelming recommendation to buy this CD if you are a fan of mood music from its golden era, the 1950's.
