Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Seven Seas finds Pint & Dale performing traditional work songs of the Tall Ships sailors as well as new works by some wonderful songwriters in the folk tradition. The traditional titles include "High Barbaree", a tale of piracy, battle and revenge, "Cheerily Man", one of the oldest of all hauling songs updated with a contemporary spin, and the deep water shanties, "Oh Mary, Come Down," "Billy Boy" and "The Wild Goose Shanty". Contemporary songs are represented by Alan Maslen's "The Mary Stanford of Rye," a true saga of a British Royal Naval Lifeboat Institute crew's tragic sacrifice in a rescue operation gone wrong. Ron Baxter and Ross Campbell's "Lost" is a poignant, emotional litany of ships and their crews that disappear in the daily struggle between man and sea. Tim Laycock's "Heaven's a Bar" tells of the sailor's unique vision of paradise, where "the liquor is free -- they keeps a great stock." "The Packet Rat" is William Pint's setting of a poem by the English nautical writer, C. Fox Smith.

As on several of their previous recordings Pint & Dale are joined here on several songs by Tania Opland and Mike Freeman on violin, percussion and additional vocals. Traditional English, Irish, and Northumbrian dance tunes featuring Felicia Dale's trademark wailing hurdy-gurdy along with mandolins, guitar and fiddles are featured among the songs. The album runs from sensitive, introspective a cappella songs to bursts of rollicking, joyful musical energy.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Hard to believe, but the animated feature film--once at the top of the endangered film species list--seems now imperiled by a glut of multi-studio riches. Perhaps overshadowed by the success of its rival in nautical animated adventure, Finding Nemo, this rich reworking of the Sinbad legend features its own spectacular visual wonders, marvelously underscored by the orchestral soundtrack of Harry Gregson-Williams. As he did for Chicken Run and Antz, the English composer again displays a mastery of animation's sharply increased musical demands. But in paying tribute to the swashbuckling musical grandeur of a bygone film era, Gregson-Williams still remains very much his own man, subtly seasoning his sweeping heroic themes with touches of choral mystery and the exotic. It all builds inexorably to the expected symphonic crescendos, but with a brio and romantic flair that's hard to deny. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic !.......2005-12-24

Amazing adventure score. Highly recommended. Harry does it again! Hear and feel this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Orchestral Spectacular!.......2005-03-31

Do yourself a favor and order this music. It's just plain fun! Don't try to analyze what you are hearing. Just enjoy. The main theme may wear on you just a bit, but overall I have to say it's still great. The recording is very well balanced, and you can hear all the instruments clearly, even in the full-bore, high level passages (there are plenty of these). Also, there is plenty of bass energy, but it is not overwhelming. Track 3, the Sea monster, is a good example, with some excellently recorded tympani. This track has it all. I always look forward to hearing the bass trombones at the 0:46 mark. Track 5 has the Syracuse theme. I have no idea what this is (I have not seen the movie, and don't need to). Let me say that this theme is more like an Anthem to me. If you only listen to one track as your sample, make it this one. The orchestra sounds like it will just keep going through the roof (eight notes, orchestra all playing together, full-bore). This might qualify for the 'best one minute piece of music' award, if there was such a thing. It returns majestically on track 21 at 3:40, in a different key, even more thrilling because it's played twice and the last note is held longer. I guess I've run out of superlatives. The only sonic problem I noticed on my copy, is that when the strings are playing at their highest level, there is some distortion, but it's not overly objectionable. Favorite tracks - 1,3,5,14,17,21. Almost forgot. The arrangements are right on target.

3 out of 5 stars Whimsical adventure music.......2003-12-03

Whilst not original, tantalising or explorative to a seasoned listener, "Sinbad" is a nice piece of music for a composer relatively new to the job.

Working as a behind-the-coulisses entity, Gregson-Williams' name has graced many booklets already, but as yet, he has not scored many feature films. Nevertheless, it seems directors are beginning to notice him. And what more opportunity to write a diverse and exciting score than to an animated feature adventure of "Sinbad"?

This soundtrack is full with whimsical classic adventure music, with several ear-catching themes and some great monster music (especially "The Sea Monster" and "The Roc"). For the enthusiasm lingering between the lines, simply listening to the opening cues brings a smile to my face.

However, where the album fails is in fleshing all these themes and motifs out. Eris' theme and Sinbad's theme fly by too many times in undisguised vivacity. In addition, there is little difference in tone and ambience overall. What happens is that after the first two tracks, everything you will hear next seems unsurprising. Singular exceptions to this are the Roc's motif and the Sirens' calling. They do their best to kill the beat around the block, but - to me at least - they are tracks to return to rather than links in a chain. I'm not sure if that is what they are supposed to be, but I can guess.

To me - even though I return to the album many times for its feel-good undertone - "Sinbad" spells `beginning composer' all over it. I don't like to say such things, but as the case stands, less minutes of music would have made a better listening experience.

All the same, it's worthy of your collection but not worthy to the talents of Harry Gregson-Williams, who will bloom and produce much better music if he stays off the beaten tracks.

This one gets three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutley Superb!.......2003-09-19

This score for Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas is astonishing. It sounds so wonderful and just great action music. I recommend this to everyone who enjoys listening to great action music.

4 out of 5 stars A solid 60 minutes of music........2003-09-09

Surpassing his work on "Chicken run," Harry Gregson-Williams makes the perfect score for such an animated action movie. Though his talents could be appreciated in other areas of Hollywood, he's good at what he does.

5 out of 5 stars A dreamy masterpiece!.......2005-06-08

After hearing the song "Librarsi" on the first volume of the Elevation CD compilation series back in the fall of 1998, I was thoroughly entranced by the etheral vocals of the artist named Marcome. Originally from Canadian, Marcome could be ragarded as the Canadian equivelent of the world reknown Enya and the family band Clannad. There is a significant amount of Celtic influence but is far less of the traditional sounds that dominate the former two. Anyhow, onto the first and only album entitled "Seven Seas", this is an absolutely wonderful and gorgeous album!

The album begins with a lovely intro entitled "Breath" which has a dark but dreamy atmospheric sound with Enya-like multilayered voices and unique chord changes throughout the track. The interlude track ends with a beautiful Celtic chorus which morphs into the beautiful track entitled "Yeku". This near 6 minute joy is a gorgerous track that to me evokes far more heavenly images than the pictures of angels playing harps on top of clouds in sunshine. The song has a far mistier, and more heavenly sound with some joyous laughing and jungle waterfall effects. This is arguably my favorite track on this entire album.

5 out of 5 stars A new fabulous new record from Marcomé : River of Soul.......2005-03-25

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Marcomé returns with her stunning new recording, an upbeat elixir for the spirit that she calls River of Soul. Marcomé blends English lyrics with a unique wordless language that evokes a vibrant and ethereal universe.

Her vocal style is a unique blend of sensibilities. Middle-eastern modalities are successfully blended with appealing elements of jazz and a soothing ambient atmosphere, accented with subtle world beat percussion.

River of Soul's cinematic universe is one filled with spirituality, exotic imagery, and an intimate, dream-like sensitivity that's introspective yet very accessible. It's a mesmerizing musical tapestry for the ears, eyes, and soul that is sure to please Marcomé's impressive and faithful fan base.

River of Soul continues the sonic voyage that Marcomé explored so successfully on her previous album, the acclaimed Seven Seas, which earned a certain worldwide notoriety and a wide exposure. This new opus, while sure to please those already familiar with her work, continues to experiment further both musically and lyrically.

River of Soul - as well as the now remastered debut album Seven Seas - may be ordered through Amazon.ca and you can listen to samples on the artist's official website at marcome dot com.

4 out of 5 stars Moves the spirit.......2004-12-20

There are three or four songs on this cd that are excellent, all of which I first heard on other compilation cd's before I FINALLY found this cd at a used cd store. More so than not, I was a bit let down with all the other tracks that I had not yet heard. The first half or so of the cd is miraculous, then it gets a little depressing after that. Not that the compositions of the songs are bad, (in fact they are nice) it's just that the mood gets rather blue and somber toward the end. It's like sitting down to a really wonderful meal and eating all of the great stuff first only to have all the healthy veggies left to eat. "Seven Seas" is definitely a cd worth having because of its several fantastic tracks, though. Marcome seems to have disappeared since then, but hopefully she will be back with more songs that almost make you leave your body, as on "Seven Seas".

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad song on the entire CD!.......2004-10-03

It often happens that we buy CDs for one, perhaps two, tracks that we like very much, and I confess when I first heard Track 2 of this CD ("Yeku") that was what induced me to buy it. What a wonderful surprise to find that Marcome has given us a CD with 11 tracks of superb metaphysical sound and voice. I still like "Yeku" the best, and apparently Marcome did too, since track 11 is a "bonus edit" of "Yeku" from Track 2! But, as I said ALL of the tracks were great. Thank you, Marcome, for marvelous CD!

5 out of 5 stars Marcomé will be back with more in 2004.......2003-12-16

I actually have worked with Marcomé and still enjoy very much Seven Seas.I like to listen to that cd over and over, it's aging very well. It's a nice first album, my only regret is that she took so long to give us the next one but it's coming.
Marcomé will give us a new cd for 2004! I have had the chance to get a glimpse and I can't wait to hear her second cd.
Like others said, one might refer to Enya but I say she is Marcomé, and it's just wonderfull like that.

Enjoy

Marcome is finally back with a 2007 remastered version of Seven Seas as well as a new record River of Soul. This second album is an upbeat elixir for the spirit, energetic, contagious. The last track Nostrie Tiempo is a masterpiece. Her voice is better than ever. You can discover the artist at Marcome dot com. Hope you Enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Symbiotic music.......2001-11-13

At last, I received the album of Marcome. In Belgium, Europe it was difficult to order 'Seven Seas' in our stores. Now,the surprise is a fact. Of course, when you're listening, you hear in the distance Enya but I find that the 'timbre' of her music is very different. She uses a lots of instruments and so you hear always another beautiful song. The title song is the top but also 'Librarsi' and 'Time to follow' are very good. Marcome has a very pure voice and the voice flews over in the instrumental notes...so her voice and the instruments become symbiotic...
You have to listen to this music with little safety candlelights in every corner, a good glass of your best wine...and you shall have an experience you have never before...

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Familiar and unfamiliar, early and late Coates' works........2001-12-28

A second CD of the music of Eric Coates, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Wilson, takes its name from the principal item - a 20 minute piece for large orchestra called "The Enchanted Garden". In its final form (1937), it was intended for a ballet with a scenario devised by Coates' wife Phyllis. To me it sounds like a symphonic poem, with a particularly engaging "boop-boop-a-doo" opening theme.

Elsewhere you will find the familiar and unfamiliar. You will also find a very early work, "A La Gavotte" (1912) and his last work, a march "High Flight" (1956). Comparisons with Coates' own recordings show that John Wilson keeps close to Coates' rather fleet speeds. My favourite here is "Dance in the Twilight" from the 1937 "Springtime Suite", as evocative and beautifully scored a piece of light music as any that might find its way into your cart.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Coates Rules!.......2001-11-20

Yet another winner in the ASV series of Eric Coates CDs. The highly professional BBC Concert Orchestra have once again created a most worthy presentation of works by Eric Coates. As with the companion CD, "Eric Coates~17 Orchestral Miniatures," the diversity of works will satisy and delight all E.C. fans.

        Album Description

I don't get to do much sailing anymore but I do like to put on a Pint and Dale album, plop down in my chair and have a good long nap. Now I know saying that this music puts me to sleep doesn't sound like a compliment...

But then you'd have to see the dreams.

OCEAN, singer-songwriter-producer, has infused the magical feel of the seven seas into MERMAID MUSIC, her first international cd release. Her hypnotic vocals and raps drift mesmerizingly aloft the hard funk of danceable rhythms, while the accents of other cultures take the forms of Turco-Arabic melodic and rhythmic influences, and her dreamy lyrics create a beautiful spell through the multi-ranged vocals of this truly gifted solo artist.
