Product Description
Described variously as 'a maoist fiddle album' & 'a fiddle album for people who don't like fiddles', this is an uncompromising work which four-handedly re-invents the fiddle tradition. With a minimal dusting of percussion & other strange acoustic instruments, the heart of this album is the interaction of two fiddles, in which harmony & percussive accompaniment are taken to extremes. Much of the material is traditional, but it's undergone a total rethink with a view to making the music swing & speak rather than ping & squeak. 9 tracks. Skitteesh. 2003.

The Presidents of the United States of America scratch that itch that you can't reach. They do and say all those things that you'd like to, but fear what people might think of you. They are your inner-child, but stinking drunk on a half-case of cheap beer. And, with the youthful appeal of the Dead Milkmen, the off-kilter storytelling of Primus, and a razor-sharp sense of irony, they are utterly undeniable.
Try, if you will, not to sing along with "Lump." It sticks in your brain after the first chorus and won't leave until you hear something supremely catchy just to scrape the chorus out of heavy frontal lobe rotation. Musically, they keep everything very minimal (they have only five strings between bassist Chris Ballew and guitarist Dave Dederer) and use their incredibly twisted wit to engage the listener. From the punkish "Lump" and "We Are Not Gonna Make It" to the funky "Boll Weevil," the Presidents are the perfect antidote to the serious, heavy-handed rock perpetuated by their Seattle brethren. --Adem Tepedelen
Album Description
The Presidents Of The United States Of America's 1995 debut went double platinum in the U.S., rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard's Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits & a #1 single on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. You either loved this record or
you loved it.
The band is back and, believe it or not, they once again own this album. They've chosen NAIL to distribute it, which is in line with their renewed esprit de corps and desire to keep things friendly and local this time around. The album is on the band's own PUSA Music label, headquartered in their hometown of Seattle, just up the road from NAIL's Portland HQ. Getting the rights to this classic debut back from Sony precipitated the band's recent much anticipated reunion.
The Presidents played their first show in five years on New Year's Eve 2002, and in the last year and a half they've continued gathering steam. The new songs originally recorded for the re-release of their debut became a whole new album, 'Love Everybody,' which produced the current radio hit "Some Postman." The band has been touring the U.S. this summer and fall in support of that release, and will continue with dates in major markets through the end of 2004.

10 years on and still improving with age.......2005-08-22
I bought his album ten years ago when it came out first. It was special at the time, singles like 'peaches' and 'lump' matched my energy at the time. It seemed like there was only one song that summer, 'peaches' and it lasted beyond. The songs on the original are great summer party songs and they still are. I lost my original a while back and the summers just werent the same - this album has a great energy and this summer was made complete with this release. The added material is interesting but a little desparate, there are some good alternate versions of the originals and some demos. The demos are interesting to see how the process involved in songwriting works and then to compare with the finished product, as i said interesting but i could have done without half of the bonus material. The original album hasnt lost any of its vibrant, headbopping energy and the sometimes complete childish idioacy of the lyrics makes the music special in its genre and still makes me grin. Yes, i am that old fart in the office, 2 stone heavier, and thinks that nightclubs are to noisy - reliving the lost pleasures of youth and fond memories - it works for me. This album is good fun both 10 years ago and today. enjoy the fun.
Cool CD.......2005-07-29
I sent this cd to a good friend who's an avid PUSA fan and he liked the album so much that until now he never fails to say thank you (that's 2 weeks since I gave him the cd). I like their 2 songs, Peaches and Lump. A good ol' punk CD. :)
Everybody Wants To Be Naked And Famous.......2005-02-06
Talk about nostalgia. I wore this album out back when I was 14. When I got a couple years older, I sold most of my CDs because I needed money and wanted to put off getting a job for as long as I could. Unfortunately, this album was one of those I sold. I downloaded this album a few months ago and fell in love with it again. I remembered and sang all the words to every song with a huge, beaming smile on my face the whole time. Song to song, this album is a complete blast. It's brilliantly simple, tons of fun, and outrageously sophomoric. If you're looking to hear social commentary, look elsewhere. In this country run by these Presidents you'll hear songs about animals, chicks, dune buggies, and 30 foot smurfs. Being that my last name is Peach, I feel like I have some sort of connection with these guys, even though it got to be annoying during high school when the song "Peaches" was big. Now being 10 years older and in the "real" world, I listen to this album and it transports me to a time in my life when I didn't have a care in the world. It's the type of album you put on when you're wasted or when you're just plain lurking to rock out. I'm excited that they got back together and they're making music again. Looking forward to hearing more stuff and hopefully seeing them on tour.
THEY"RE BAAAACK.......2005-01-07
I loved this CD when it first came out, i was a freshman in high school. It was stolen from me and i have been searching for it since then. I went to the local CD store, where they can order any CD you can think of, only to find out that it was out of print. I was bummed! Then i thought, about AMAZON and how they have new and used figuring that someone had to be selling a used copy. I was elated to see my favorite CD not only back in print but enhanced by a bonus DVD. To my fellow generation, buy now, relive those fund days of High School when these guys rocked our world. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow!
YEAH, THE PRESIDENTS ARE BACK!.......2004-11-06
Finally, after many years, the Presidents decided to re-release their 1st album. It went out of print a little while ago, just as I was getting into these guys. And now, they have brought it back on their independent label. Now we can all get our daily dosage of ROK!

Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21
When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.
Defending the Alamo.......2005-09-09
I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.
Excellent CD.......2005-06-22
This is an excellent CD. If you are interested in this CD you will love "Audio Tour of the Alamo and Old San Antonio of the Wild West". This CD will gudie you around the Alamo Battlefield in present day San Antonio sshowing yu the actual locations of events of the battle. To hear a sample of this audio tour go to

Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05
Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.
None Better.......2004-12-01
A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).
OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.
Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.
The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.

!!!!.......2007-07-28
HOLY SOMETHING!
I haven't stopped playing this CD. In the line of more 'popular' artists like the Pixies, The Velvet Underground and someother artist, Bubble and Scrape manages to build a disturbing masterpiece of harmonious melodies and downright strange trippy moments, in words that come to mind. Thank you Sebadoh, for being the best band I almost never heard of.
more diverse than ever.......2007-03-04
This is the weirdest sebadoh album. Especially all of eric's song. Jason has a few weird ones too. And as usual lou, mellows things out. but
this album split apart three songwriters into one musical mirage of sounds. the album starts off with two from barlow, two from gaffney, and then two from loewenstein. and then goes back to barlow and the rest in that order again. except for the end then it's a little different.its kinda like three seperate albums. its all over the place and pretty crazy. im still getting used to it. harmacy is by far my favorite. but bubble and scrap is there when i need a break from the other ones.
fantastic disaster........2006-06-13
This album kind of presents the band as three pretty different kinds of songwriters, which can make it feel frustratingly choppy and schizophrenic, but also makes it entertainingly unpredictable. Lou Barlow presents himself as the sensitive, heart-on-sleeve one, with melancholy melodies and emotionally direct lyrics like "guilt is a stupid thing, don't let it make you stay/ leave me if you're wanting someone else, I'll be okay". Though his lyrics occasionally approach lovelorn cliche, his sincere delivery mostly manages to make them believable and affecting, and he also provides most of the album's more immediate melodies. Jason Loewenstein is overall fairly compatible with Barlow; though his lyrics can be little more abstract and his material can get a little bit noisier, his songs are prett sympathetic in tone to the Barlow ones. But then completely out of left field we have the oddball noise-punk of Eric Gaffney. While his contributions are pretty acquired taste, and usually don't end up making much musical sense, he always brings some interesting ideas to the table, and unlike the Barlow and Loewenstein numbers, I honestly haven't heard anything quite like this. There's a few clear traces of Minutemen and Sonic Youth influences, but he makes it fully his own with queasy chord changes, psychotic screaming, and unpredictable shifts in structure and even genre ("Fantastic Disaster" keeps jumping into bizarre out of tune harmonica/piano breaks, "Emma Get Wild" starts out as a surf/jazz instrumental before suddenly turning into a slightly unhinged Daydream Nation rocker, "No Way Out" fades out after about a minute, then devotes half of it's run time to a bizarre collage of unintelligible sped up voices and clips apparently taped off the radio). There seems to be an attempt to make it flow a little better by pairing off songs by whoever's singing lead at the time (i.e. two Barlow songs, then two Gafney ones, then two Loewenstein ones and so on), but in a way this emphasizes the differences in approach even more. Honestly it feels a little like listening to the a and b-sides of singles by three different bands that are only similar in that they all feature lo-fi production and ragged playing. Still, overall this is a pretty good listen for anyone exploring mid-90's underground rock.
one of my favorite albums. lovely. .......2005-09-17
sebadoh always rocks. always. and i would have to say that this is definitely their strongest album. the band demonstrates its versatility, executing tender love songs like "think (let tomorrow bee)", hard-rocking, balls to the walls tunes like "flood", and weird, dissonant, folkcore fests like "bouqet for a siren" and "elixir is zog" with equal ability. this is also one of sebadoh's finest line-ups, with lou barlow, jason loewenstein, and eric gaffney on drums. gaffney is a great drummer and he brings some strong material to the album. sadly, this is, as another reviewer noted, his swan song. bob fay, the drummer who succeeded him, just doesn't cut it.
bubble and scrape combines the discordant, lo-fi sounds of earlier albums like the freed weed (which is definitely less listener-friendly and requires a little patience to get used to) with the slicker production quality of later albums like the sebadoh. if you can own one sebadoh album, this is the one.
Could be their best...........2004-06-19
Sebadoh did alot of different things with their sound. First it was the ultra low fi stuff then the insane verbal assaults from Eric then this.... Which is like an in-between of a clean cut indie sound mixed with a raw anger-filled punk band. Most songs have normal beginnings but then move into Sonic youth territory with lots of incoherent screaming and guitar. Take the opener Soul and Fire. It's a tight normal sounding song, then as we move on with the album we find ourselves covering our ears over Eric's literally insane over-the-top screams like in Elixir is Zog, Flood and Telecosmic Alchemy. Flood is about drug use or doing drugs from what I heard in Eric's offbeat screaming. Elixir is Zog makes little sense but I think it's about date rape for some reason. Telecosmic Alchemy is just another weird punky song. Eric said it's about a comic book ad. Uhhh.
But then there's the songs that board the line of weird and actual music like Bouquet for a Siren, which is one hell of a song, but the off line singing and rampant guitar make it pretty weird within first listen it is a highlight of the album though. Fantastic disaster is another one, starts like a normal song then drives into harmonicas and screaming and alot of weird pedal use. Still it seems to flow and work so damn well. Another weird-ish song is Emma get Wild which reminds me highly of the Minutemen with a different vocalist.
But Barlow can strike back with some REALLY good songs like Cliche, Two years, two days, Forced Love, Hassle, Sacred Attetnion and Happliy Divided. Cliche is actually one of the BEST Sebadoh songs i've personally heard. Soul and Fire seems to be the winner of the best sounding/written song on the album, but I seem to love Cliche a whole lot more. Sacred Attention boarders grunge as does Two years Two Days.
Recommended if you know Sebadoh from the early onward. If you're new then start with The Sebadoh (1999) or Harmacy.

Beware!.......2004-03-15
Ivan has been a favorite of mine since "Ancestors", so when I saw he had a new CD coming out, I knew I had to have it. Once I got it home and listened to the first track, I realized I'd been had. This release is the same as 2002's "Saturday Morning Music," with a live version of What You Want From Me added. If you already have that release, save your money. Otherwise, purchase either disc because the music is exceptional.
Classic Soulful Ivan.......2004-01-21
This release finds Ivan grooving on some great tunes. There's no pop single like "Just another girl", but it's a good complete release with some soulful singing, solid playing and classic Ivan. Don't get too excited as the CD is more mellow than you'd think, but tracks like Ghetto Street stick with you like the sound of Professor Longhair piano riffs... Improve your CD collection and add this one to it. It'll stay in the player longer than you think.

Album Description
After three long years, we have you here a new album by FLESHIES, a loud band from beautiful Oakland, CA, who have released two loved-to-death-by-the-kids albums on Alternative Tentacles. After their second full-length The Sicilian (Virus 297) and years of body/mind-warping worldwide tour marathon, FLESHIES withdrew into drummer Brian Hamiltron's Sugar Mountain Studios to work on a new opus. Breaking away from the punk rock tradition of banging out a record in a few days, they took their damned sweet time making the most ridiculous album possible. Scrape The Walls is a spirited 17-song effort to molest punk rock in a similar manner that Sparks unwholesomely molested glitter rock, the Melvins mauled rock, or the Butthole Surfers maimed music in general. (Speaking of Sparks, this album includes a delightful cover of "Happy Hunting Ground" with Jello Biafra on guest vocals.) Scrape the Walls bounces everywhere from somewhat sunny-dispositioned pseudo anthems to sludgy, stoner rock-esque castings, all glazed with Fleshies' inimitable sense of fuck-you humor. But honestly, no 200-word summary can neatly tie up the disorderly strands of ideas and musical chaos that is FleshiesÑand we wouldn't want to do them such disserviceÑso we will just say Scrape the Walls is exactly the kind of record AT should be releasing and leave it at that. "I thought, ÔAha! This is what punk rock was supposed to be.'"ÑJello Biafra "SmartÑmaybe too smartÑdown to earth, blue-collar guys who want to inject a little scary fun into their music."Ñthe OC Weekly "Can and do win the hearts and minds of Marines and Marxixts alike, with big ugly . . . riffs for the meat-or-metalheads and smart, socio-aware and bitterly sarcastic lyrics."
