About the Artist
With talent, creativity, idealism, and over 25 years of experience in performing, recording and teaching on their resume, Kim and Reggie Harris are the consummate modern folk musicians. Whether entrancing folk festival crowds with their repertoire and warm harmonies or dramatizing underground railroad songs for schoolchildren in classroom workshops, the duo continues the folk tradition of preserving important songs from the past and adding meaningful, new compositions that reflect the world around them.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA., both Kim and Reggie were exposed to a wide range of musical styles and approaches throughout their childhoods. They met at a summer camp in 1974 and continued their friendship as fellow students at Temple University. As their relationship deepened, they combined their vocal and instrumental skills (both sing, and Reggie is an adept, expressive guitarist) and started performing in local Philadelphia clubs and coffeehouses. They were married in 1976, and by 1980 had hit the road in an ongoing tour schedule that still averages more than 250 dates a year.

Writing songs together, separately, or with other musicians, the Harrises have never lacked for material or subject matter. Their compositions have dealt with ever-relevant topics such as politics ("Big, Big World," "Read the Lips"), domestic violence ("Crack in the Wall"), the family of man ("Spoken in Love"), the joys and sorrows of love ("Sweetness of Your Smile," "Four Walls"), and a constant theme of social activism. Their lighthearted paean to automobile seatbelts ("Passive Restraint") has been featured on National Public Radio's "Car Talk" program.

As their live shows and albums illustrate, the Harrises are adept at recognizing good songs by other writers and making them their own. Besides recording classic compositions by folk deities like Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs, Kim and Reggie have also adopted obscure gems like Chris Farrell's "The Stars that Didn't Shine" (about Negro League baseball players), David Roth's idealistic "Earth," and roamed even farther afield to cover "Woyaya" by Osibisa, an African rock band of the '70s.

The Harrises' cultural background as African-Americans is a major component of their repertoire. Spirituals and gospel songs are liberally represented in their work, and they are well respected in scholastic circles for their presentations on black history for teachers and students alike. Their best known album, "Steal Away: Songs of the Underground Railroad," serves as the backbone of their "Music and the Underground Railroad" workshops and can be found in museum gift shops around the country. They also present programs for teachers entitled "Dream Alive! A Celebration of Black History" and "Music of the Modern Civil Rights Era." Their latest project is a one-act opera for student and family audiences entitled "Friends of Freedom: An Underground Railroad Story."

Kim and Reggie and their frequent recording and performing companions Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, better known as Magpie, have also contributed to all three of the Appleseed label's tributes to the music of Pete Seeger - "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "If I Had a Song" and "Seeds."

Whether appearing at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, or P.S. #187 right down your street, Kim and Reggie Harris have established a strong identity in today's musical and sociopolitical environment. As all of us should strive to become, they are part of the solution to the world's ills - a balm for the troubled, an inspiration for the tired or apathetic, a musical force for positive change.

While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, Def Leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The first disc of this 35-track, two-and-a-half hour double-disc retrospective focuses on the familiar hits of their early MTV, platinum-selling prime, though the inclusion of the video edit/remixes of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rocket" attempts to cast them in a more club-friendly contemporary groove. But the grittier second disc showcases some of the early, overlooked roots of On Through the Night and High 'N' Dry, as well as underappreciated later gems like '99's "Promises" and a power-pop-perfect take on Badfinger's "No Matter What" from an upcoming covers project. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars what do you want? i want rock n' roll!.......2007-07-25

what do you want?/i want rock n'roll!/you betcha!/long live rock n' roll!/def leppard sing in the classic rock of ages. that song gives this collection its title. 35 classic songs on 2 cds. isn't that awsome or what? ok i'll give you the song list. the songs include pour some sugar on me,foolin',photograph, high and dry(saturday night),women, love bites, rocket,no matter what, two steps behind, let's get eocked, and have you ever needed someone so bad. that' quite a list isn't it? listen to this album ,you will hear these songs and many more great songs. trust me you will like this album as much as i do. ed wilson

4 out of 5 stars Should have been five stars, but wasn't..........2007-07-07

The concept was correct: Use of a full two CD's to represent all the great songs the band has produced. However, the selection was incorrect. There is too much emphasis on obscure tracks like "Paper Sun"? and "Waterloo...". But perhaps the most glaring faux pas, is that the albums "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" are under represented. Where is "Action...Not Words" and "Stagefright" or "You've got me Runnin'" and "Lady Strange". Also, "Die Hard the Hunter" is likely the ONLY weak song from "Pyro" and they choose it? Nonsense... Once they release Pyro and High n' Dry in a remaster, those are the two to get after Hysteria.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must have for Def Leppard fans.......2007-06-19

This 2-disc collection rules. It's got all the hits and more. The songs are put in a good order on both discs. Great summary of Def Leppard's music. The fan gets well over 2 hours of Def Leppard for his/her money. Great value! Get it.

4 out of 5 stars Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Def Leppard?.......2007-03-25

This is far better retrospective than the old one disc set, The Valut. That being said, I think the casual listener may find this collection to be too much Def Leppard. The first disc is fairly solid disc filled with radio hits and popular album favorites, with only maybe one or two questionable tracks. The second disc is highly indulgent with newer material that only a hardcore fan who continued to follow the band through less popular albums like Slang, X, etc. will know. If you haven't bought a Leppard album in the past decade, you won't know a lot of this disc. Overall, a very thorough set, but the passive fan may opt for the one disc import only version, Best of Def Leppard. Its not complete, but its got more than The Vault without the filler of ROCK OF AGES.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-03-10

I was NOT disappointed with my purchase here. There's a great selection of songs on here, showcasing the band's changing image over time. If there are particular songs that you like that aren't in this collection, I'd suggest you download them, or get them elsewhere, but definitely get this CD for the absolute best of Def Leppard. It contains great liner notes on each song, with input from each of the band members, something I particularly enjoyed. Getting these liner notes helped me understand a lot more about where the band was coming from on each song and what it truly meant to them to be writing and recording it. With this input on their take on lyrics and such, I daresay I understood the songs themselves better. It also includes pictures of the band over time, including Steve Clark (R.I.P.). Overall: Perfect for fans and those simply looking to get the best of this phenomenal band.

Amazon.com essential recording

This 1972 live album is a watershed recording for the Band. Recorded the previous New Year's Eve, the two-disc concert recording presents the core quintet fortified by a five-man horn section overseen by New Orleans ace Allen Toussaint, and it is capped by a guest appearance by Bob Dylan. The brass and reed players incite the group to gut it out with more unrestrained fire than these road-hardened vets were accustomed to. The lion's share of the set selections are culled from the quintet's first four studio albums; only an ebullient cover of the Marvin Gaye hit "Don't Do It," the unremarkable original "Get Up Jake," Garth Hudson's mind-boggling organ improvisation "The Genetic Method," and an absolutely piercing version of Chuck Willis's "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes" spice up the reliable album selections on disc one. But Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel sound like they're having so much fun singing the likes of "King Harvest," "Stage Fright," "Caledonia Mission," and "Chest Fever" that it matters not that Robbie Robertson's writing muse had already pretty much dried up. The 2001 digitally remastered reissue includes an entire second disc of previously unreleased tracks, including four with Dylan at the mic. More than four years would pass before the Robertson version of the Band would call it a day following its star-studded Last Waltz, but, as a live entity, here is where they crested. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Band, one of the greatest bands!!!.......2007-07-14

Very good mix, excellent horn arrangements and..... The Band!!!! A lot of classics in live versions. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album Ever.......2007-03-31

And I'm glad, finally, that after knowing it for over 30 years, I finally recognized it.

This one's funny. I bought "Rock of Ages" as an LP back in '72 or '73, not sure which. I'd never heard of The Band; in fact I had barely begun being interested in rock music. I did something here I have done many times since (and any bookie would want a system that has worked as well as this has): the album cover intrigued me, so I bought it, not having heard a lick of anything on it, live or in the studio.

I was pretty much floored from the first listen. I'm still floored. It's playing behind me right now.

I must have sort of presumed everything I heard would be this good. My interest in rock pretty much developed, after this, with my interest in The Rolling Stones. So, after I'd heard lots of live stuff, and gone to enough concerts, and the time came to do that thing we all do and pick out The Best, the Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" was the obvious choice as Greatest Live Record. One or two other contenders have blossomed since then. But until I bought this one, again, on CD, it never seemed to be among the records I considered. There's no good reason for this. It just is. I didn't hear my first studio Band album until well over a decade after buying "Rock of Ages." Can't explain that either. But I sure memorized every note of this one.

I didn't realize that the horns were a new thing for the group; that they punched up every single cut; that the group's fervor seemed to triple with what was behind them; that the recording was pristine; that any band would want one record one-tenth this good. I just heard it, loved it, went on to other things - Stones Who Zep Dead Doors U2 Allmans etc. - and left this one all by itself as Supreme Record Experience. Not Best Live Record Ever.

Which it is. Now that I know.

The second CD has good music on it. The first is the music I'm talking about. Whew. You will never - you probably never did - hear The Band sound better. This is called rising to the occasion. Someone once said that a traveler should not visit Alaska while still young, because it dulls one's capacity for enjoyment to see the finest first.

Maybe that was my problem. Not that I feel dulled or anything. But I heard this first. And it's still the finest.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-02-25

Certainly their best album; perhaps the best live album ever. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Band's best live album.......2007-01-12

Although The Band is immortalized for its audio/visual production, The Last Waltz, this is really their finest live recording. While The Last Waltz dazzles with its eclectic mix of guest stars at the end of the group's history, this is a mix of almost all of their early hits as well as lesser-known tracks when The Band was in its prime. The result, while it's not as transcendent as some live releases (Dylan's 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert, for example, which had The Hawks as backup, or Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison), Rock of Ages is a solid effort packed with a ton music and some classic moments that belongs in the collection of any fan.

The album kicks off with the definitive version of perhaps The Band's most famous cover, "Don't Do It." It's funky, energetic and a classic reading of a tune first made famous by Marvin Gaye. Another live first on this album is the addition of a horn section (featured on Cahoots). They sound great on "Don't Do It," but although Allen Toussaint's horn arrangements have been the object of much fan praise, I could honestly do without them on most of The Band's classics. It sounded like the group (especially Robbie Robertson) was really looking to add something extra to their sound. I, on the other hand, love the boys just the way they already sounded! The horns don't get in the way, but they don't really add anything momentous either.

The Band is in fine form on this collection, with each member shining in alternate moments. Robbie's guitar is wicked--it cuts and lifts the energy of songs like an electric razor. Garth Hudson's "Genetic Method" organ improvisation is one bonus of hearing their music live--he truly is a virtuoso, ad libbing some sweet keys and quoting recognizable snippets from several genres of music. Richard Manuel shines on is classics, "King Harvest," "The Shape I'm In," and "I Shall Be Released." His voice has so much uniqueness that every different version of a song has its own idiosyncrasies. Another track you'll get with this album is "Get Up Jake," which was the only way to get it for years. Also included are a couple classic rock and rollers, "Loving You Is Sweeter than Ever" and "I Don't Wanna Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes." The Band sounds like they're enjoying themselves to death while playing, and it's hard not to get caught up in it.

This release also boasts quite a number of bonus tracks, some of which are essential and others a bit disappointing. It's awesome to hear such rare nuggets as "The Rumor," and "Time To Kill," as well as "Up On Cripple Creek," which wasn't originally included on the album. The tracks with Dylan at the end, though, are a little lackluster. Dylan, famous for not wanting to rehearse with his bands, sounds unprepared (he even fudges the lyrics on "Like A Rolling Stone" for goodness sake!), and the backing is a bit ragged.

Overall, this is a very worthwhile live album, and although few of the live takes make the studio versions obsolete (except maybe the gnarly "W.S. Walcott Medicine Show," in which the horn section cheers on Garth Hudson's all-out sax solo), it's a great supplement to the absolutely essential studio albums of The Band.

5 out of 5 stars Classic live album.......2006-09-30

I've had this for years on vinyl but only now have gotten around to picking it up on CD. I've been listening to it with great pleasure. It's every bit as good as I remember musically, and the remastered sound is quite good. The Band were on fire those nights, but what really puts the record over the top for me are the brilliant horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint, which are individualistic and striking yet invariably sensitive to the song. To do what he did required a rare combination of academic knowledge, flat-out funk, and impeccable taste. It would be hard to think of another arranger around at the time who could have pulled off this trick so well for this particular music and these particular musicians.
I have to say, I think most of the goodies are on disc 1. Only a couple of the Band numbers on disc 2 strike me as really good (though none are bad). Furthermore, the Dylan stuff actually is kind of bad IMO--Dylan isn't singing all that well (though he's undoubtedly enthusiastic), and The Band isn't playing as well on those tunes as they did on their own stuff, either. Dylan fans may react with outrage, but that's how I hear it. Frankly, disc 2 mostly tells me how intelligently the original double vinyl album was selected and sequenced for its initial release--they really did get it pretty much right the first time, nabbing most of the best stuff on the first try. More isn't always better.
Even though I can take or leave the second disc (I suspect I'll mostly be leaving it), this CD is worth five stars just for the classic original record captured on disc 1.

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.

I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

This album touchs all the spiritial feelings of ones soul. As I listen to this album, I can almost feel each song shift my emotions into a different gear. This is a great album to melt away the stresses of the day, while at the same time bringing an inner peace at the promise of tomorrow, by way of ones redemption in our renewal of faith. It is a beautifully produced album, and I am glad I have it in my collection. Re: the comments by "Christian Mom" It sounded kind of familiar. Almost like what a blacksmith would say when she would have an ax or two, too grind.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring...Thank you.......2006-08-31

What a wonderful album. Simple inspirational songs by a great singer. The execution is very professional...a hallmark of Vince Gill albums.

This album gives Ms. Grant another chance to showcase her beautiful voice w/songs on traditional church hymns. We all know that she's great at singing pop...but some of us don't like pop that much! I've grown up w/many of these songs in church, it's so happy to hear Ms. Grant sing them. Thank you, Amy & Vince.

5 out of 5 stars Amy and Vince harmonize beautifully.......2006-07-20

How can anyone say this is a terrible cd? It's great. I love it. I am an Amy fan and have been for quite some time and I think they are all great and this latest one is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of Amy's best yet.......2006-07-09

We bought multiple copies to give to friends after hearing this great CD. You won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Is this really the MTC?.......2007-04-06

I've now played this CD several times and am always left wondering whether someone is fielding a back-up choir because it has none of the usual majesty of the real Tabernacle Choir.

The recording is a bit "thin" and I've only kept it because I know the MTC can do and has done so much better.

5 out of 5 stars What a way to invite the Spirit!.......2006-06-09

This CD is fantastic. The music selections are great!
My favorite is How Firm a Foundation.
But others are great as well.
I just love how it invites the spirit into my life, and send shivers of peace up by spine when I listen to this CD.
A great CD!

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful listening.......2005-05-20

Steve Cumming played this version of God Be With You Till We Meet Again on his last broadcast show for classical WRR radio in Dallas. If there was a dry eye in the listening audience, I would be surprised. In addition to the song he chose, this recording has all of your favorites performed with beauty and majesty.

5 out of 5 stars Great "Best of" collection........2002-02-24

I am a firm believer in "Best of" collections, since you get the wheat seperated from the chaff. This collection hits the mark, sicne it has general Christian music, along with Saint-specific songs of the Restoration.

It a recompilation of analogue-recorded music, so the sound is merely hi-fi and not hi-tech. But we are after the sould of music, not the technicality.

3 out of 5 stars Good recordings from the 1960s........2000-11-21

This CD is taken from two sessions the Choir recorded in 1960 and 1969, the earlier session (thirteen of the thirty tracks) being sung accompanied by the Philidelphia Brass Ensemble, and the latter session carried by the Tabernacle organ alone. The CD is generously filled out to 74 minutes, with 30 tracks crammed into the running time. It's intriguing to hear the finesse the choir has achieved in the last 40 years; if you compare this recording with their latest: "A Tabernacle Christmas," the improvement in the latter recording is dramatic. The recent creation of the Orchestra at Temple Square has been a much-admired improvement, but this recording has much to recommend it, including fervent readings of "Onward Christian Soldiers," the somber arrangement of "Abide With Me" and many others. Overall, a stolid, sincere recording which pales somewhat compared to the brilliant recent releases from this world-class choir.

Pirate-themed kids' discs have been done before, and they generally fall into the same musical black hole that swallows up other such single-minded projects (think railroad yard music for 4-year-old train buffs, monster records and the occasional daring clown-themed disc). Pegleg Tango makes itself the exception--the treasure chest at the end of a rough voyage--and here's why: Captain Bogg, First Mate McGraw, Charlie Scuppers, and the eye-patch-wearing, plundering brigade of others who populate this disc seem to have been actual pirates before they were kids' artists. "Pieces of 8ight" is served up with enough salt to sink an iceberg, and "What it's Really Like on a Ship" invites scallywags of all ages aboard for a scurvy-skirting adventure. Some surf music washes up, a little reggae reaches the shore, and the occasional mermaid sighting is celebrated with skull-and-cross-bones-style pop harmonizing (imagine a cast of Broadway crooners cutting up with parrots on their shoulders). Bogg & Salty's crew effectively capture Captain Jack Sparrow's swagger and set it to sound; there's not a musical deck-swabber among them. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars a hit at pirate camp.......2007-06-20

my play group had a pirate themed camp and i purchased this CD to get the kids excited about camp. it was a BIG hit. it's all that my 3 year old wants to listen to in the car! and it is fun for adults to listen to as well--it's taking much longer for me to get sick of this CD than of others we own! :)

One of the best CD's for children I have heard in a while. We dance and sing all the way to day care everyday listening to this CD. What a way to start a day!

I ordered this CD for my son's fifth pirate-themed birthday party. What a treat! ...And there's even a pirate birthday song! It was a party hit and my son has listened to it MANY times since!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-04-15

My kids aged 4 and 7 both loved it. Not only that, but the grownups liked it too. Some kids' CDs are annoying (e.g. ones with a Purple Dinosaur) but the songs on this one are pretty catchy and I found myself actually humming some of them at work.

This entertained my kids 8, 4 and 4 for our 6 hour drive to Disneyland. Fun songs!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-04-18

I originally purchased this album after listening to the mp3 of Scurvy. I am now a fan. Every song on this album is fabulous. Although I can't say which song I like the best (I like four or five "the best"), I can say that if you are interested in a fun jaunt into silliness -- this is the CD for you! Although I originally thought that this was a recording only for young children, I'm finding that I too laugh along whenever I hear a really robust HAR-Har-Har!!! I just purchased Captain Bogg and Salty's second CD - "Pegleg Tango", and although it is good in it's own right, "Bedtime Stories for Pirates" seems more classically piratical.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Trade Winds to Ye All!.......2005-03-24

I just finished writing a review for their CD "Pegleg Tango" and realized that this CD needs its fair share as well!

Again, AWESOME! This CD is great fun with its ingenious dialog scripting and sound effects, as well as fantastic vocal harmonizing. The songs are catchy and fun and even as a parent, I find myself singing along! My children (boys 3 & 5) LOVE the song "Scurvy" and laugh each time they hear Salty say "Bunny rabbits!". My personal favorite is "Billy Bones", a wonderfully clever and very creative sea tale and song.

Check out their website at www.eatalime.com.

Great fun - Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids, Great for adults!.......2005-03-02

This is one fun CD and a great band. I have to admit that I bought this CD for myself after catching the band play live. After my son was born, I started playing it for him and was not surprised to see that he loves it too. Now that he is over a year old, he is dancing to it and it won't be long before the singing starts. The album is well crafted and takes you on a journey with stories and music. As you listen, it's not hard to imagine yourself on the deck of a pirate ship with the wind in your hair and surrounded by your loyal crewmates. Most children's CDs drive me mad, especially after repeated playing. This one gets better and better every time I hear it and that is a good thing since it gets played every single day. Har!

5 out of 5 stars ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!.......2005-02-22

This duo is among my favorite acts out there in entertainment today. Both Captain Bogg and Salty are great on there own as they've both headlined stadium tours, but put them together and you have magic. I have a tough time getting my toddler to lay down for a nap, but have you ever tried getting pirates to sleep? I'll tell you it ain't easy. Pirates are kind of hard to control because they are constantly looking for booty. They wear weird clothes and say ARRRRRGGGHHHH and Matees all of the time. Frankly, they are a bit annoying. T-Rex(J Abs) and I went out clubbing with a bunch of pirates we know and it just didn't work out. Chicks don't dig the pegleg and the fact that pirates don't bathe nearly enough. Blueballbeard kept going up ladies and telling them to walk his plank. He would follow that up by farting and saying ARRRRRRRGGHHHHH. It really ruined our chances. That and the fact J Abs has tiny T-Rex arms AND talks like a pirate pretty much meant I wasn't getting any. So take my advice and don't go clubbing with pirates or friends with tiny dinosaur arms that also talk like pirates.

5 out of 5 stars Darker days ahead ?.......2007-05-01

From the moment Max Cavalera was out from the band he fronted for more than 10 years (Sepultura, of course...), he was facing the dilemma that pursues anyone who steps aside from an established act. He could stick to the proven formula (after all he was the principal songwriter of the band) and continue working in his familiar style. Otherwise, he could build his new band from scratch. He chose another part - taking the modus operandi of the last Sepultura albums Chaos A.D. and Roots - he broadened and expanded it, further establishing the tribe-metal style. However the first lineup of this outfit lacked the crucial ingredients for further buildup. The major drawback was absence of a stable lead guitarist. The only constant bandmember these years was the bass player Marcello Diaz (former Sepultura roadie).
Prior to the recording of the Prophecy album Max came with the inevitable change. Entered ex-Ill Nino flamenco-shredder Marc Rizzo. For me he is complimenting Max the Riffmeister much better than Sepultura axeman Andreas Kisser. Their teamwork proved itself well in the band's two last outputs.
Dark Ages is the most recent Soulfly record, released in 2005. The overall vibe is very much Sepultura-like, pushing forward thrashing riffs instead of decorating with them fusion experiments that were prominent on previous releases. Outstanding songs for me would be I and I that fuses Max's trademark diesel riffs with a nice mellow passage, solid thrashers Babylon, Carved Inside, and Arise Again (a nod to the Sepultura glory days?). Several misses I found here are: the stupid singing in Russian on Molotov song (F^&*k the war, maneuvers are the main thing -?!!!!) that is pretty lame anyway, the familiar tribal drumming and chanting about Zumbi the hero - we've been in this movie already. Finally, the too long instrumental Soulfly V. In general, this is the finest Soulfly album (apart from its predecessor maybe - the excellent Prophecy). Hopefully this lineup of the band will produce more great music!!!

    5 out of 5 stars The Bab E Lon!.......2006-11-22

This CD is easily the most accessible effort since the 2nd of the Soulfly discography, and what I found most interesting is how he incorporates some old-school metal devices in these songs to create something fresh... or am I the only one who noticed how Maiden-like some of the guitar choruses sounded, or the double-bass backbeats of late 80s rockers Testament?

Nah, no way. Fans of old-school and 90s metal need to have this album right now. If you thought Max lost his way in prior works, shake it off and check this out. It's surprisingly heavy, heavier than Slayer's Christ Illusion or Meshuggah's first album. Those who know, will recognize how truly metal that really is.

5 out of 5 stars Very Current, and Very Acurate With the Mood of the Real Minds of Today.......2006-10-14

I was, and still am addicted to the first Soulfly release. Primitive came out, and pissed me off. I grabbed a few tracks off of 3 that drove me nuts, and totally abandoned Prophecy. Only after searching for hard heavy metal music I decided to give an old band a visit thanks to related links, and I guess growing up a metal head it was before my time?

Well here I am now a total of 7 years later and I got all 5 albums in the front of my 'bible' of an album book. Got em all at once, and you can read my reviews on each one with Prophecy rating all four.

This album is dark. The vibe this album carries is jaw dropping. Having known Max for being hurt over his son's death, and then patriotic with 9/11, then just jamming hard and worshipping god and faith, this album is like a damn therapy album for him. It has to be...

From the very beginning this disc starts off with the Arabian instrumentation that I know nothing of, but love and then it roars with a memorable drum roll kicking off the second track. From then on it gets harder and harder. I'm pretty sure the line up on this album was the same guys from disc one? If not then shoot me, but it's got at least a couple...

Most of the reviews say it goes back to Sepultura's roots, which personally I was never a big fan of cuz I can only take so much thrashing, and repetitiveness. The instrumentation and prodduction provided a good change with classic to modern - with solos being thrown in and sounding accurate. Max's vocals seem to have lol finally developed and sounded at their best. He's got this grind in his throat that doesn't sound overdone, and he's deeper in tone, but not throat clearing you know?

The lyrics and the PULSE of each song is what totally won me over. It's dark, simply put. It's like being in the head of a soldier, or philosophical thought of an anti war person who knows from being there what the feeling is. Hatred, violence, death, murder, suicide, regret, and prayer. It seems as if after all his patriotism towards the war and god being on his side, he feels robbed. He's angry. He's confused, and he's very pissed off.

This is definately an album to look into more than just good hard rocking music because his lyrics actually have heart in them, more than before and he's crying out/admitting mistakes. The war politcally and medialy has turned sour, and he knows it. We're getting more bodies shipped with freight than 9/11 victims' identifable body parts. It's by no means a political record, but to me it seems that he too is just fed up with everything in life, the government and right now Dana's justice being served is kinda secondary, also considering the feds have never closed the case..

I could explain this album so much why it's definately my top 3 right now, but the editors won't take it. vIf you've read my reviews and they've helped you buy, this will sell too. This album is a change of style, this album actually sounds like a BAND rather than random tracks thrown onto a disc. This album has a flow, even a marching song before a battle!! It's got the same breaks of tribal elements down tuned beaten with upside down drumsticks and not just palmed bongos.. The disc is black, the art is black and white, skulls and bones, the whole gothic symbol of oh s--- this isn't good. Buy it, and it'll be hardest if not the best Soulfly album yet. I promise mo fo's...

3 out of 5 stars This Age is not too Dark.......2006-07-13

Dark Ages is Soulfly's Fifth album. Most people have labeled it as Max's heaviest album since Arise. This is sadly not true. Though the cover art comes from the same artist who drew the cover art for Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos A.D., Dark Ages is not all it's been hyped up to be. It has its heavy moments in the beginning, but as you progress through it, the flaws become apparent and Dark Ages becomes difficult to listen to from start to finish. There are a lot of things wrong with this album, which I shall list now.

    1. Special Guests: yet again, Max Brings in 3 vocalists who are below average. The worst is his stepson Ritchie Cavalera, who makes me want to rip my ears off in a horrible and twisted rage from his inability to sing.
    2. The Zumbi chant and Berimbau: Max needs to get a new chant. One every single Soulfly album he uses the same thing over and over again. This time he uses them on the song Riotstarter, which has got to be one of the worst songs on the album. You would think that his interest in tribes would allow him to use another one.
    3. References to previous songs: Arise Again... Let's just say that the song Arise is better than this whole album. Same goes for Innerspirit (Inner Self).
    4. Soulfly (Insert Roman Numeral Here) Instrumental: while this instrumental isn't that bad, it's rather boring.
    5. Poor lyrics: The lyrics become pretty bad and annoying at a few points.
    6. Lyrics about Dana's Death: I understand that Max was really attached to his Stepson, but it's been 10 years since his death. Do you think that if Dana were alive that he would want Max and his family to be grieving over his death until the end of time? I wouldn't.
    7. Christian lyrics: These are the things that bother me the most. I'm an Atheist and I respect the beliefs of most people, but Pro God lyrics just don't work in Metal. I'm surprised that touring with MORBID ANGEL didn't change this. Remember songs like Necromancer? Antichrist? Crucifixion? Doe anyone remember?
    8. Max actually mispronounces Babylon which kills the song for me and just makes me laugh at times.
    9. (The) March: It's like Prodigy got involved with Soulfly, fortunately it only lasts 1:18.

With that all said and done, now we can talk about the good things found on this album. There are actually a lot of good songs found on the album. Had it been cut down to ten songs, this album would be significantly better. This is the first Soulfly album to not have a lineup change and actually allow the band to strengthen together and create some really good songs. But who knows how long it will last before Max kicks someone out. If you want to find out what Max is up to then I would definitely recommend picking this up, but only in the used bin. If you are a huge Soulfly fan then you'll go nuts over this but the moment you listen to the early Sepultura album, you may lose interest in this one.

Now that was the review for Dark Ages. This section is my comment on Soulfly and where they are with Sepultura. Though not really a review, I felt that I needed to say this and compare Dark Ages to Sepultura's Dante XXI as I am sure some readers are interested to know who is outdoing the other.

What's the current situation with Sepultura and Soulfly? Which outdoes the original? Many people would probably yell at me by saying "Those are two DIFFERENT bands!" but admit it. Everyone wants to know which is currently doing better. Which of their new albums are better? Is it Dark Ages or Dante XXI? So here is my opinion. Dark ages has a few good songs which bring back some hope that Max still has it in him. However, the album is plagued by special guests (fewer this time), clichés, Christianity to the point of annoyance, and features a few songs that should never have been recorded. Dante XXI on the other hand, I can listen to from start to end, features better solos and though it has a few soft spots, is a solid record and filled with mystery as it is a very interesting concept album. In the long run, Dante XXI is a much better album than Dark Ages by comparison. However the question of which is a better band may go to Soulfly as Igor Cavalera has officially decided to leave Sepultura, leaving Paulo as the only remaining original member. Now two of the things I loved about Sepultura are gone; Max's awesome Vocals and Igor's unique drumming with only thing saving the band being Andreas. Derrick may make a good vocalist but Max was just better in comparison hands down. The future of Sepultura is at stake where as Soulfly is actually becoming stable with Dark Ages being the first album without a lineup change. Who knows what will happen in the future as it looks like it's up in the air. Hoped this review and comparison helped, I apologize for its length.

5 out of 5 stars Max Found Himself Once Again.......2006-06-20

Soulfly steers away from the defunct nu-metal bandwagon and proves that Max didn't sell out with "Dark Ages". This brings back the days of older Sepultura and, once again, no help from any musicians for the 3rd time. Marc Rizzo is a hell of an amazing guitarist and can shred really great. There's less tribal influence on this one, but if you're a fan of modern thrash/groove metal, pick this up. You will be blown away.

    5 out of 5 stars Ah, youth..........2007-06-07

This was the first Bad Religion CD I bought, and I have never regretted buying this before a regular studio CD. A warning: there are several live versions on this, so if you are looking for the slick, produced versions only (why??), this might not be the CD for you. I really appreciated the fact that it had so many of songs from different albums, so I got a broad sampling of their already large repertoire. Now that I own other CDs by this band, I would still recommend this CD to new listeners, or to people who like to listen to live versions and all their energy.

Good recording, GREAT band. See them live and buy their CDs. They've been around, and they definitely know how to put out amazing, smart, solid, and highly charged political punk music. Part of the social conscience and forward-thinking backbone of the entire punk scene.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile addition.......2007-05-23

A good collection of Bad Religion's older material. A lot of it is more "punkish" than their later (and, in my opinion, better) material. Some pretty classic tracks but an equal number of no-so-great songs. I'd probably give it three stars if I weren't already such a BR fan. Worth getting in either case, though.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless?.......2007-02-06

If there is only one thing you have to do before you die, it is listening to this album. There are only 4 flawless albums in my heart, and I absolutely love all music. And, even though BR cheats a little by pretty much making a best of, this is a flawless album. Now, what do I mean by flawless>? A flawless album in my books is an album that you can not only listen to it straight through, but you would personally kill anyone who tries to skip a song -- this album is flawless. Buy it now....NOW...NOW!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!!!.......2005-07-20

Gotta check this out!Dammit dont waste time, you could be dead any minute...Buy or steal this album as soon as possible...its for youre own good!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Good Compilation.......2005-06-04

The only compilation worth buying is a compilation of all old Bad Religion songs. Period. This CD mixes a variety of songs from "Suffer", "Against the Grain", "No Control", "Generator", and "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?", probably the highlights of Bad Religion's long running career. Personally, I don't think there was ever a dull moment, even with albums like "The New America", "Recipe for Hate", and "No Substance", I think Bad Religion has made every album strong and full of thought and Greg and Brett's own opinions and bits of wisdom (which they have plenty of). But that's another subject matter. "All Ages" combines a lot of great songs off of the before mentioned albums like "Generator", "Anesthesia", "Walk Away", and "Sanity". It also contains live versions of "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?" and "Do What You Want". If you've never heard Bad Religion and want a good gist of their previous albums, pick this up. If you like what you hear, definately pick up the rest. "Generator" and "No Control" have tons of songs you can't afford to miss.
