As a member of the Incredible String Band, Williamson offered both deep, sometimes bizarre philosophical content and also some outrageous musical wit, making the band into one of the more enigmatic groups of the 1960s and 1970s. As a singer and songwriter, he is an acquired taste, but if you were attracted to early ISB philosophy and the more serious side of their music, then this album is right for you. Williamson actually re-creates some of the more esoteric sounds of the old band on Ring Dance. It's full of changing colors and emotions, rife with changing tempos and energy. The mix of skilled performance and childish whimsy in the instrumentation of this record makes for some heady, confusing listening, and Williamson's poetry is complex and demanding at times, incomprehensible at others. In 1998 as much as in 1968, Williamson's vision as a songwriter is personal in construction, but encompasses a universe of ideas and sounds, and is never going to be taken lightly. This CD has a companion release called A Job of Journey Work, and if you are a fan of the more fanciful and folksy sounds he is also known for, you should probably consider that one too. --Louis Gibson

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

If you're getting married, this is the cd to have. I heard "Rainbow Maker" on the radio shortly before I got married (June 2001) and immediately ordered it. No one had heard any of the tracks before and I liked that.
About 7 songs from the cd were used as background music on my wedding video and at my reception.
It's a MUST HAVE!!!

I've just ordered my personal copy of this cd but I've have heard the tracks. I heard them at a wedding in washington. I also have the first cd and I think I've told every couple I know about the cd! These songs are of the highest quality incorporating the spiritual tone that is so much needed in marriages today. I purchased this CD for my upcoming wedding and I wanted to use music that noone has heard before. It took me awile to get it but when I received it I haven't stopped listening to it yet. I have a lot of favorites on the CD but the two songs I loved the most was I Do and God's Greatest Gift and as a matter of fact I am using the song I Do when I walk down the aisle. I have owned this cd for about 15 years, when it was damaged and scratched. I had to repurchase it. I can't live without it! The highlights being "Leave Me to Bleed" and "Hideaway" mixes. The cd is in 3 parts: remixes, orchestral versions, and live selections. All are fantastic and fun!

100% one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES (other than the 2 box sets that are very $$$ with multiple CD, maxi's enclosed and to much to carry around) but it is a must have (in a collectors box) with every remix and unreleased items avialable. But This 2 Ring Circus CD, is just as good if not better. The Mixes are great, with the Erasure Feel and a tad of that Yaz feeling, some songs are acoustic, some are remixed to perfection, and the live concert tracks send chills up your spine, as if U are really there. For the small $ this is a CD that you just can't stop listening to, I have 2 copies (one for the home, and one for the Car) at least if one is damaged, I have a back up edition. EXCELLENT CHOICE, even the box set(s) do not have "Drama, Love 2 hate U, and so many more, but I would start with this Cd. The Live version of Oh'Lamour is so fabulous, the crowd cheering in the background etc.. really allows you to know how much this group is appreciated the 2 Ring Circus CD is great....Jason Prof DJ

This is one of my all-time favorite Erasure albums, and is really the one that made me fall utterly in love with the band. The remixes are better than the original album versions (especially Hideaway), the orchestral versions turn decent studio songs into emotionally powerful *killers*, and the live tracks do a wonderful job of showing that yes, even synth-pop bands like Erasure can sound better live than in the studio. The live cuts of "Oh L'Amour" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme" are especially fantastic.

Enough of my gushing! Buy this album!

1987's "Two Ring Circus" is essentially three Erasure EPs on one CD: we have a selection of remixes, a handful of orchestral re-recordings, and the final third is a set of live tunes. On all counts, the disc succeeds. The better remixes include a smoothed-out reworking of "Sometimes," Dave Powell's remix of "The Circus," and Little Louie Vega's version of "Victim of Love." The orchestral tracks are re-recordings set to a lush string arrangement; the best of these are "If I Could" and "Spiraling," which bring out the best in Andy Bell's expressive voice. In many respects, I prefer these versions over the original album tracks. Of the live selections, the absolute treat is the duo's cover of ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme" which almost outshines the original by the Swedish group. This "circus" is one of the greatest shows on earth.

I got the cassette just recently on December 2003, and I loved it. The remixes are just bright and sound like the original versions . They are not overproduced, but sound so simplistic as each synth sound kicks in. Little Louie Vega did a good job remixing "Victim of Love." However, "Leave me to bleed" stands out from the rest, and is much better than the original version found on "The Circus." The live songs are captivating, and "oh L'amour" sounds as you have never heard before, as Andy Bell calls out each instrument : "Percussion......Bass". You've got to get this important production of Erasure's catalog. The only reason the tape is not worn out is because I've digitalized it and turned it to mp3's.Five stars well gained.

Not issued in the U.S. until an early-'90s rerelease program, Abba's first album points toward the world-dominating pop of their later years. While the title cut has some vroom, others call for fine-tuning. The New Seekers-style anthem "People Need Love" offers the bizarre insistence that "People need love to make a good living"--at what?--and "Nina Pretty Ballerina" could be a pop song for toddlers. Not a bad thing, but not quite "Dancing Queen." And no, "Me and Bobby and Bobby's Brother" isn't a Springsteenian saga of felonious misadventure, but a jingling remembrance of playground days. The 24-bit remastered sound of this edition (which includes a Swedish version of "Ring Ring" among its three bonus tracks) does suggest the care Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were already taking with production. "Ring Ring" album is great! I love this album. Most people are saying "I Saw It In the Mirror" is a boring song. I don't think it's half bad. But the other songs are fun to listen to. They sound a lot different it being their first album. This is a great CD.

but it has enjoyable pop songs nonetheless. It kills you with cuteness with songs like Me and Bobby and Bobby's Brother, Nina Pretty Ballerina, and I Am Just A Girl. The album features the 1970 Bjorn & Benny recording She's My Kind of Girl, recorded 3 years before the rest of the album. Rock & Roll Band closes the album on a rockin note, and is one of the highlights. All in all, an album filled with ABBA curiousities that is definitely a must have for a die-hard ABBA fan or for someone who's into campy 70s pop.

If you are an ABBA fan,you will need this CD in your collection for completeness ... but most of all, to see how the band started out. Most ABBA fans agree, this is possibly their least favourite ABBA album (next might be Waterloo) - however, it does contains some great songs, just not enough of them. Comments on each track are as follows:

1. Ring, Ring - this song has an interesting history. It made no impact on its initial release as a single, but was then remixed to present a rock flavour to it, and then soared the charts particularly in Australia where it went Top 10. The remixed version can only be found on the "Definitive Collection" CD.

2. Another Town, Another Train - a very catchy tune which almost has a folk flavour to it. Quite possibly the best track on the album.

3. Disillusion - a song written by Agnetha some years back for inclusion on her solo album. The English version appears on this album. Overall an ok, but dullish song.

4. People Need Love - a big hit in Sweden, and included on their first greatest hits album.

5. I Saw It In The Mirror - totally boring.

6. Nina, Pretty Ballerina - a silly song really, but has its moments.

7. Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough) - mediocre, the album continues to lose momentum.

8. Me And Bobby And Bobby's Brother - this is where the album starts to pick up again. I like this song for Frida's vocals.

9. He Is Your Brother - brilliant song, very catchy.

10. She's My Kind Of Girl - boring!

11. I Am Just A Girl - Very interesting song, love the girls singing on this.

12. Rock'N'Roll Band - the B side to the remixed version of Ring Ring single in Australia. ABBA does rock for this one!

13. Merry-Go-Round - bonus track

14. Santa Rosa - bonus track

15. Ring, Ring (In Swedish) - have not heard this version, it is omitted from Ring Ring CD.

Overall, Ring Ring is not a masterpiece, nor is it a complete failure. It has its merits, and should still be in every true ABBA fan's collection.

The album was never origianlly released in the U.S. The only difference from the original release is that the title track was available twice on the vinyl. First track in swedish, last track in english. Even though a bit silly some times, it is excellent commercial 70's music. But for somebody starting to listen to ABBA I would start with a later CD like "Super Trouper" or "Arrival". With this as their first album together, it is worth the money.

Sometimes I think the only person who is happy that Public television is financially challenged, other that certain legislators who believe that it is too liberal and the culmination of all that is evil, is Andre Rieu. Now don't get me wrong, this happy Dutch musician who models himself after Johan Straus is not a cruel or vindictive person. At least from what I can tell he's not, but let's face it. If PBS did not have financial woes, Andre Rieu, one of its favorite stars, would not have received the exposure he has, and his sales in the United States would probably be next to nothing. Of course for anyone who has ever seen one of his extravaganzas, we would be missing something enjoyable. He's musically sound and he knows how to entertain, and quiet frankly, though some classical purists may cringe at his name, I don't believe the composers whose music he uses are rolling in their graves because it's become popular once again.

Of all his concerts and CDs, I enjoy THE CHRISTMAS I LOVE the most. The jitterbug version of "Jingle Bells" shows that an old tune can produce new tricks. His arrangement of "The Holy City" (a.k.a. "Jerusalem") is almost as moving as when it is performed with a vocalist. The recording has a number of medleys that include favorites from all over Europe show how Christmas has such an international flair. For me, however, this album provides true variety. Many of the carols are not familiar to Americans, so we hear something different yet also authentic to the holiday season.

I'm surprised that there have not been other Rieu Christmas discs. He's an original musician and a consummate showman, so I'm sure there's more he could do with holiday music, but maybe he knows he has a classic with this collection and it will stand the test of time.

Andre Rieu proves again he is the best of the best! I bought this CD in october 1997, a few weeks before Andre's concert In Quebec city. In this CD, you'll find all the classics of Christmas. They are well played because Andre and his orchestra know how to bring us the atmosphere of Christmas. The desing of the CD is well done. If you,re looking for good music, please try this CD You'll enjoy it. If you have the occasion to see his Christmas concert on TV, watch it. It's very beautiful.

This his not the first CD made by Andre. In 1992, he released "Spielt Die Schonten Weihnachtslieder".

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

ONe of the best CD music investments I have made. Use it primarily for relaxation/meditation but it will also work well with massage environment.
It goes from spine tingling inspirational to soothing and relaxing. Totally shifts my conciousness to a higher plane.

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.
