The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

I am a big fan of rootsy, acoustic rock with some jam band style, but not too much jam band style. This album is a fantastic treat that consistently delivers great music, song after song. If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar albums then I recommend the following:

      2) Good To Be Here by Ernest Goodlife Band
      3) 1972 by Josh Rouse

If you wanna experience something that you have never heard before, but that is musically incredible, then Townhall is the band for you. The band uses a mix of instruments that are too long to list and the kicker is, they all know how to pretty much play everything. PLUS, they keep you focused on the music even though there is so much movement from instrument to instrument on stage. This is a live cd that captures the energy you feel by being at one of their shows. The band is very tightly knit musically even though this was a relatively early show in their careers. They have improved greatly since then, but Live at the Point is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing CD from a band that is sure to be huge!.......2003-02-05

This band is amazing. They are original beyond belief with their funk, folk, rock, reggae, jazz improve, their big band feel, and their talent which allows them to swap instruments effortlessly. I have seen them live, and you should too.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-08-16

Townhall is wonderful. Any other adjective wouldn't be worthy of the funky, original, soulful melodies that come from these 5 amazing guys. If anyone ever has a chance to see them in person, don't hesitate. No matter what kind of music you usually like, there's a sense of togetherness and love that makes you dance like you've never danced before. Watch out, hopefully there will be a new album in the very near future.

      5 out of 5 stars Unexplainable.......2002-06-23

This is one of my favorite cd's and i cant go a week without a major dose of Townhall. It is definatley...[great] and i cant begin to explain how ...talented all the members of Townhall are. They are even better if you see them live....but if you dont have that luxury this is as close as you can get to Townhall perfection.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps for Warne Marsh fans only?.......2006-03-27

I'm not aware of any tenor player who sounds like Warne Marsh, and there surely were none back in 1957 when this was recorded. Almost all sax players have a sound which is more or less internally consistent, but Marsh's seems to be made up of three or four quite different ones. Sometimes it's big and full; at other times, thin and dry as smoke. In the upper register and the high harmonics beyond it (which he handles with amazing mastery, far beyond that of many far more celebrated players) he gets a clear, bright, unforced alto-like sound. And finally, there's a kind of splintered gargle (think Lester Young playing a hookah...), which description might make it sound awful, which it definitely does not,as he employs it. This enormous tonal variety is accentuated by his penchant for rapidly alternating from loud to soft and in-between,sometimes every two or three bars and at any and all tempos. Though he seems far more interested in the linear elaboration of harmony than in melody, nevertheless his improvisations are full of surprising and thrilling twists and turns. These traits, plus his rhythmic agility (he swings!) make him, IMHO, far more interesting and enjoyable than his fellow Tristano disciple Lee Konitz.

This recording contains some very fine playing by the young Warne Marsh. In addition, the fact that he's playing standards (and Charlie Parker) makes the utter originality of his harmonic/melodic approach stand out more clearly than it would if he confined himself to those rather monotonous Tristano-school "originals". The sound is,all things considering, pretty good, certainly good enough for anybody whose primary interest is in the music itself rather than in sound reproduction per se.

The problems lie in two areas:the place where the recording was made and the other musicians. There's a good bass player. The drummer is adequate so long as he confines himself to basic time-keeping and not so hot when he tries anything more. And the pianist, otherwise unknown to me, is an enigma. At times he plays very well indeed; at others his sense of time and/or his technique let him down pretty badly.

As for where the recording was made, anybody buying this should be aware that Marsh and company are playing in a nightclub where a number of the patrons yak loudly and inanely and incessantly; it's painful to hear the utter lack of respect for the musicians. If you are the kind of person driven nuts by this sort of thing, you should definitely not buy this CD. I found it barely tolerable and often very distracting, especially given Marsh's above-noted tendency to play very softly at times, not just on ballads but also at medium and up tempos.

      5 out of 5 stars Genius revealed...........2005-10-18

This has to be some of Warne's most inspired work ever captured.
His sound is absolutely beautiful troughout these 2 sides, and the ideas keep popping out fresh, and never before heard (and swinging to!). The piano player is a character,a little crazy, but warne seemes to respect him a lot. A gem!

      Product Description

March 3rd 2006 was a truly historic night. Fresh off his raucous full band Streets Of New York release party in NYC days earlier, Willie Nile headed an hour north to Piermont, home of the legendary Turning Point, for a stripped-down trio show that turned out to be one for the record books. The sold-out crowd was treated to a concert in which Nile and friends (Jimmy Vivino & Rich Pagano) showed why Streets Of New York has been called one of the years best efforts by numerous publications and radio stations. From the opening line of Welcome To My Head, every single person in the packed club could feel the energy in the air. Niles songs are well-crafted sonnets penned by someone who has experienced a great deal but played with the exuberance of a young punk band. There were seven songs from Streets Of New York played this night, coupled with mainstays Vagabond Moon, Thats Enough For Me, Les Champs Elysees, Hard Times In America and On The Road To Calvary. Nile also pays homage to three of his main influences with some rocking cover songs by The Who, The Ramones and Dylan. He was full of stories and offered the crowd insight into the songs and inspiration behind them as well as some lighthearted anecdotes that have become trademarks of Niles acoustic shows. Thankfully our tapes were rolling and this most special night was captured for you to hear. 5 out of 5 stars This is what it's all about!!!.......2007-07-03

If you were to define the spirit of rock and roll, this would capture it! This is a concert that would rise the spirits of Holly and Cochran. Yea...sound quality may be off slightly but is rock and roll about perfection??? It's the rough edges that gives it the character.
I too have follow Willie since I heard a live radio broadcast back in the spring of 1980. Of all his albums, this one captures the essence of his talent like no other album.

1 out of 5 stars What a rip off! .......2007-06-05

I cannot believe I paid $15 for this horribly recorded live CD. "Live at the Turning Point" should be given away as a bonus for buying his next studio CD, not sold as a stand alone CD. The sound reminds me of bootlegs recorded when a bootlegger snuck a tape recorder in his pants.

I am a fan of Willie's and own all of his CDs, but I am very disappointed with this release.

      1 out of 5 stars What a Major Disappointment.......2007-05-30

As someone who has been a Willie Nile fan since the release of his first album, I anxiously look forward to hearing anything he puts out.His last two releases have been excellent and probably some of his best work ever.

Live at the Turning Point is something else entirely. Its a poorly recorded, amateurish release that no one except completists should shell out $15 or more for. I was stunned when I listened to this by the awful sound. Its as if someone with a 1970's tape recorder and a single microphone walked into the club and placed it on a table in front of the band and hit 'play'. The percussion sound (are those drums or garbage cans the guy is hitting?) is hideous, the between song banter often obscured by crowd noise, and the performance itself just fair. I've seen Willie many times, including 3 times last year at SXSW and any of those shows were far better than this allegedly 'legendary' performance.

I don't like when artists do large amounts of overdubs to make live albums sound better, but when the other end of the spectrum is just to release something 'as is' with no effort made at all to make the listening experience more enjoyable, its even worse. Willie should be ashamed of himself for letting something like this get released. Its an insult to his fans and a complete rip off.

I am relatively confident that fans could source better live shows from the 'Streets of New York' shows on the internet without having to pay good money. I am all for supporting artists, especially ones who are as woefully overlooked as Willie Nile, but even that has its limits, and 'Live at the Turning Point' is not worth buying.

        5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2002-10-06

(Note: this CD is really titled "Live at Bubba's," not "Budda's" as listed here on Amazon.)

They say the older the grape, the sweeter the wine, and such is the case with Carmen McRae. It doesn't seem possible that any one singer could become any more better with age than Carmen McRae, and this album proves it. She inhabits a song like no other singer in history. Her virtuosity as a musician is front and center at this live and intimate show, where she reinvents traditional and contemporary songs into their absolute definitive versions. Take "New York State of Mind" or "Send in the Clowns" for example. I personally have never liked "Send in the Clowns" ever, until I heard Carmen sing it here. It's amazing, simply amazing, what she does with this tune. And the same can be said for every tune in this set. But the absolute high point on this CD is the luscious, melancholy and exquisite "My Foolish Heart." If this doesn't move you to tears, nothing will.... it's one of the great jazz vocal performances of all time. "How Long Has this Been Going On" is another definitive moment in music history available right here on this CD.

Don't hesitate in purchasing this superlative work of art. This is Carmen McRae at her absolute best.

        5 out of 5 stars Classic Carmen.......2002-07-16

This album is a wonderful Mcrae performance. She tackled standard material and current material. She is esepcially wonderful on Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman" and Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind". Carmen more than any other jazz singer consistently appreciated current songwriters with wonderful lyrics. She translates music from any genre into the jazz idiom with ease. Her "Send in the Clowns" is great and so is my "Secret Love". What's the best bet for jazz lovers? Carmen Mcrae !!

          Album Description

This CD captures the high energy of singer/songwriter Bet Williams live on stage. Recorded with an intimate crowd at the famous Philly club that nutured artists like Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitte, "Live at the Point" is packed full of great songs. With upright bass, drums and acoustic guitar, Bet's four-octave range voice travels through blues into folk, pop and rock. Some fun songs like "White Dog Doo" and "Neighborhood" (almost a mini-opera about people's barbqs) fire up the very friendly audience while other songs like acoustic solo numbers "Lookin' Down the Road for You" and "Oriental Drag" (a poignant Viet Nam poem-song by Mark Germino) leave them speechless. This is the CD that Bet-heads have been waiting for. If you're not part of her cult following, this might be the CD to check out and see why you should be.
