About the Artist
Todd Phillips (pictured at right) is the acoustic bassist of choice on many of the most innovative as well as traditional acoustic bluegrass (and beyond) recordings made over the last twenty years. A bassist since he was eleven years old, he has aligned himself with the finest musicians and creative contributors to acoustic instrumental music known, such as the original David Grisman Quintet and the Tony Rice Unit, as well as with bluegrass legends J.D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, and many, many more. He currently records with a variety of artists, while writing, arranging, recording, and producing for his own projects.

Renowned stand-up bass player Todd Phillips (yes, another member of the talented Phillips family!) gathers a galaxy of his illustrious friends - Tony Trischka, Laurie Lewis, Tim O'Brien, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger and Scott Nygaard, to name a few - to play favorite old-timey ballads and dance tunes including Spotted Pony, Sugar in the Gourd, Rye Straw and Valley to Pray. "These old songs are art out of real life, evolved through generations by folks getting together and playing it with, and for, each other," says Todd. "They've influenced every contemporary American music form. Look at In the Pines -- it's been recorded by artists from Leadbelly to Connie Fran cis to Kurt Cobain. I wanted to add again to the lives of these tunes by playing, arranging, changing and recording them (and having fun doing it)."

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Featuring the talents of David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey, The Pines combine elements of roots, blues and rock music to create a raw, haunting sound that is inventive and compelling. Sparrows In The Bell is a darkly romantic collection of original songs along with traditional tunes that have been updated for a new generation of folk fans. Like other roots acts of their generation, The Pines create timeless music that is hip and relevant yet evokes century-old ghosts, inspired by romantic writers and roving troubadours.

Sparrows In The Bell was produced by The Pines and Benson's father Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown, Lucinda Williams) and mixed by Tom Tucker (Prince, Jonny Lang)

It was recorded in just four days with the help of a whole lot of Minneapolis talent including bassist Chris Morrissey (Mason Jennings, Andrew Bird), drummer J.T. Bates (Michel Portal, John Gorka), singer JoAnna James, members of the Spaghetti Western String Co. and Benson's brother, keyboardist Alex Ramsey. The centerpiece of the recording, though, is The Pines themselves.

David's strong voice and rhythmic acoustic guitar blend seamlessly with Benson's soft raspy vocals and grooving electric guitar riffs. Whether singing a wistful love ballad like "Without A Kiss," or a restless song of unfulfilled dreams like "Let's Go," the duo has an unmistakenly original sound. Paying homage to traditional music of their youth, they artfully cover "Careless Love," giving the song a rolling Americana sound that is contemporary and fresh.

The Pines create a sound all their own, walking a thin line between sweetness and sadness, harkening back to the folk, blues and country songs that they heard growing up in small-town Iowa.

Fantastic!.......2007-02-06

I love the Pines of Rome and find this version to be as good as my other benchmark, Reiner's interpretation with the Chicago Symphony in the 60's. Too many conductors feel the need for excessive speed in the opening of this piece, causing it to feel hurried and rushed rather than triumphant. Karjan and Reiner are able to reign in this tendency. The playing is immaculate as well. This is an essential recording of this piece. Buy it.

Soothing Visions of Rome.......2007-02-01

I decided to purchase this particular CD because I did not have these compositions in my collection. I have always loved the works by Respighi, & based on the reputations of Deutsche Grammaphon, Herbert von Karajan & the Berlin Philharmonic I expected the highest quality in performance and interpretation, & they did not disappoint. They are enchanting, soothing, Italian visions of Rome. Listening to the music on this CD makes it possible to take a break & mentally transport yourself to the parks & fountains of Rome.

A Great Compilation.......2006-04-17

If I could choose the 10 best classical albums, this would be one of them. The Boccherini is probably the best part, and sections of it were used in several movies, including Sherlock Holmes: The Case of The Silk Stocking and Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World. The quality of the recording is crystal clear, creating the most enjoyable listening experience. It finishes off with Albinoni and the fabulous Adagio in G Minor, featuring Wolfgang Meyer on the organ. All in all, it's a very nice album, and a joy to listen to.

Karajan's Fine Interpretations Of Respighi's Music.......2001-12-18

I don't wish to deny that this may be one of the finest recordings Karajan made with the Berlin Philharmonic. Not only is the sound quality fine, but more importantly, the Berlin Philharmonic plays with ample technical precision and warmth. Still, Karajan's interpretations lack the vibrancy I have heard in recent recordings by Dutoit and Maazel; they tend to be sluggish in their tempi, most notably the "Pines Of Rome". Karajan is a bit more successful with the works by Boccherini and Albinoni; the string playing is a bit more refined than with Respighi's scores.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Without the gorgeous visuals, the soundtrack to Fantasia/2000 is nothing more than a collection of some of classical music's greatest moments. But what moments they are! Conductor James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provide new (though hardly groundbreaking) arrangements for these classical music warhorses. Piano virtuoso Yefim Bronfman joins in to record the Allegro section of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 (if you like this track, check out Bronfman playing the entire piece on his 1999 disc with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), and soprano Kathleen Battle lends a high note to the climax of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. We also get the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice from the original (and now out-of-print) Fantasia soundtrack. Performed by Philharmonia Orchestra, the Paul Dukas composition still steals the show. The original movie may have been a flop, but with any luck Fantasia/2000 will turn some young minds on to classical music, especially with such inspired choices as Respighi's Pines of Rome. Like what you hear? Remember, these are just excerpts and you really owe it to yourself to hear the works in their entirety--slow movements and all. That said, whether you're a Disney fan, an IMAX aficionado, or just a classical-lover-to-be, you can't go wrong with this disc. --Jason Verlinde

As a parent of profoundly autistic twin boys, this CD is so calming and I never tire of listening to it in the car. This CD on their Walkman helps get them through loud basketball games or sensory overload events at school. They LOVE "Rhapsody in Blue!"

Fantasia 2000.......2006-12-30

I have most of these pieces on other CD's, and I mostly got this one for 'Rhapsody in Blue'. If you don't own 'Firebird' and don't feel like owning the entire thing, then get this--it's got the highlights. Overall the selection is varied. You have probably forgotten that 'Pomp and Circumstance' is a real piece, and not just a graduation death march--this CD will remind you, with its very wise summary of the very extensive five marches by Elgar. This is certainly a lot more interesting than most classical highlights CD's.

My favorite piece of music ever is "Rhapsody in Blue" and I've managed to collect quite a few versions of it over the years. This is the absolute best recording of "Rhapsody in Blue" I have ever heard! I'm listening to it on a constant loop tonight. The entire record is great as is the other soundtrack from "Fantasia." The movie is a wonderful way to get kids exposed to classical music without them even realizing it! Worked on me when I was a kid. Once again, the Mouse works his magic!

In my opinion, this CD is worth it just for "Rhapsody in Blue," but there are seven other great tracks, as well. Music like this spans generations; it's essentially timeless in its beauty and ability to put a smile on your face. Great stuff. Yes, there may only be eight tracks on this disc, but four of them are nine minutes or longer, so you're not being cheated out of anything. I'm not a steadfast Disney fan, but they really know how to pick classical music for their masterpiece.

They've endured late-'90s major-label hype and taken fire for their retro self-consciousness during their days on Arista. Despite all that, BR549 has proven remarkably resilient. While two founding members have departed, the reorganized lineup mixes veterans Chuck Mead, Shaw Wilson, and Don Herron with Chris Scruggs (Earl's grandson) and bassist Geoff Firebaugh. Loose and rocking, they rely on no-nonsense originals penned by Mead and Scruggs together and separately. Despite occasional clichés ("Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle"), most numbers are refreshingly free of pretense. Genuine regret pervades the Mead-Raul Malo rocker "That's What I Get." While "Tangled in the Pines" seems a confessional on the group's past, "Movin' the Country" skewers Music Row's soullessness ("tryin' hard not to fall through the cracks and grease up that machine"). A grittier, more honest instrumental sound complements the material. The quirky tempo changes on "No Friend of Mine" succeed and Herron's aggressive steel guitar now screams more than it cries. Few Nashville acts ever succeed in reinventing themselves; it seems BR549 have beaten those odds. --Rich Kienzle

I actually have had this disc since it first came out. To be honest, I was not a fan at first. I put it on my CD rack and did not listen again. I recently listened to it on a trip....and I listened to it over and over again. I'm sorry BR5-49 for my early errors. I am in the process of buying everything they have ever recorded now. Keep it up!

great fun...again..........2007-01-04

New members, so what. My friends Chad and Miles turned me on to these guys in the early 90's. I have been huck-a-billy-rockin with em ever since. There is just something about a group that gets your ears to pick up just because you hear the start to one of their songs that is very refreshing. My wife says that she thinks that all the songs sound the same to her. She just thinks it's "country" and tunes it out. It may not be to everyones taste, but I do like it. my suggestion: Buy it for a change of pace.

I read about this group in a local music rag and figured I'd take a taste. What a treat! BR5-49 is real straight-ahead country/rockabilly without any pretentions! Nice, clean uncluttered production, and top notch songwriting! They prove that even without a Brian Setzer (who I love, by the way), you can put together a really happening rockabilly band. I'd love to see them live.

As a low brass player, I was especially impressed with the euphonium interpretation of Carnival of Venice on the Carnival Cocktail cut. Loved the Riverdance arrangement and always find good circus marches played well to be a real treat (Barnum & Bailey's Favorite, in this case). Other cuts were equally entertaining and satisfying. Great cornet virtuoso work on From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific and a lovely arrangement for tenor horn on The Lark in the Clear Air. A brass band that can be subtle or bold! A brass band that understands dynamics! A brass band that lets you hear more than just the melody line! Note to the band: a CD of KL King and other circus greats would be appreciated. And, being from Maine, USA, more RB Hall marches would go down well. Yes, he was from Maine, but also wrote great marches. Hall's great countermelody style was well interpreted on the Brassed Off CD and the same march, Death or Glory, appears here. How about more?

I've always enjoyed Jim's work with the equally legendary Dwight Yoakam, and here, with the one-of-a-kind voice of Ralph Stanley he pieces together a collection that is perfect for your long backcountry road trip. Even though some of the songs are into religion (YUCK) you just flat-out won't mind as every track is so damn good.

On his second collaboration with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys (the first was 1999's equally excelent I FEEL LIKE SINGING TODAY), Jim Lauderdale has bested himself. Not only is the playing as stellar as on the earlier effort, but Lauderdale's compositions are even stronger this time out. Chalk it up to experience or confidence (or both), but this is a terrific bluegrass album. This time out all but one of the songs were written or co-written by Lauderdale. The lone exception is the Bill Monroe-penned "Boat of Love."

Once again Lauderdale teams up with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter on two songs, the bouncy "Deep Well of Sadness" and the mournful "Oh Soul!" Personal favorites include "Quit That," "Redbird," and the comical "She's Looking At Me." The album closes with the a capella "Listen To the Shepherd," a gospel number with Ralph Stanley's haunting lead vocals.

This is one of the finest bluegrass albums released in recent years. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Loving the Lonesome Pines.......2003-09-13

I am a fairly new fan of bluegrass--but I did get into it several years before the "O Brother Where Art Thou" craze so thankfully I can't be grouped in with the SUV driving yuppie newbies who have just discovered it is cool. I love the fact bluegrass is now getting the recognition it deserves, and this album is so good--it's beyond words. The title song is the best on the album--so hauntingly beautiful. Ralph Stanley's voice brings me to tears. This is a great album for anyone's bluegrass collection.

It usually takes several listens for me to get into new music. This CD sounded great the first time. It is actually better than their first collaboration (which was nominated for a Grammy).

I cannot stop playing this CD. It's that good. Uplifting music for a sunny Saturday morning, or anytime really. The tunes are instantly sing-a-long-able.

Orchestral Trumpet Player's Bible:.......2003-05-08

I carry this recording around with me in my case, and listen to it before auditions, concerts, rehearsals, etc. It's simply how the excerpts (along with trumpet playing in general) should sound. Smith's virtuostic playing, coupled with his vast orchestral experience, really teach the parts. All trumpet players, top to bottom, have something to learn from this CD--and while the entire work (with orchestra) and part should be studied (Smith actually recommends this), it is still very useful to hear one of the finest players on earth performing just the trumpet part.

Essential Recording for Any Trumpet Player.......2001-05-24

If any principal orchestral trumpet player has succeeded Adolph Herseth as the "state of the art," the probable consensus among his peers would be Philip Smith of the New York Philharmonic. His virtually flawless technique, gourgeous sound, rarified musicianship and exceptional leadership make him virtually unique in his field, and his more than 20 years with the Philharmonic (plus his early years with the Chicago Symphony) have firmly established him as one of the greats in the history of orchestral brass performance.

Measured simply as a documentation of his skills, this recording would be an extraordinary document - the playing throughout is stupendous. But this is much more than that; Mr. Smith proves to be as articulate (mild "New Yoahk" accent and all) as he is talented, and his performance suggestions are truly helpful, even for those of us without his superhuman abilities. The recorded sound is superb, and overall this is a joy to listen to at every level. I recommend it without reservation for any trumpet player aspiring to a higher level of musicianship and performance - and if you play it at full volume shortly after your warmup, your neighbors will be very impressed.

As a trumpet player, I must say that Phil Smith's comments during each track are immensely beneficial. His thoughts have produced profound understanding in my trumpet playing, and despite the fact that this CD is intended as a grouping of Phil Smith's insights into common Orchestral Excerpts and his following demonstration, I have countless times listened out of pure enjoyment than to gain expert insight. His tone is the most beautiful I have ever heard, and it shows on this CD. I recommend this particularly for any aspiring trumpet student.

The previous reviewer of this CD missed the point of the CD. Lets say your working on the Carmern Prelude or Stravinsky Pétrouchka you buy this CD, and learn how Philip Smith (one of the greatest symphonic trumpet players in the world) would interpret and play it. Thats why its entitled Orchestra Trumpet Excerpts.

This CD would be excellent for aspiring orchestral trumpeters and soloists; although Philip Smith conveys his expertise exceptionally well, this short snips of music on this CD are no substitute for the actual full-orchestra recordings.

Nice Mellow Pickin'.......1998-08-18

Good solid, soulful acoustic music. I first listened to it while driving through Kentucky and Tennessee. Some hot licks--check out "Spotted Pony" and some of that "High Lonesome Sound" as in the title tune. A few rough spots like it was a rush studio job but all together a fine example of acoustic instrumental old-time country music.
