Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
With a whole carload of new songs and the inspiration of her new band's first CD, Susan Gibson is eager to take her contemplative, pop-folk poignancy and sense of humor on the road.
The new CD, Chin Up, features 14 new Gibson songs and stellar supporting performances by guitarist Michael O'Connor and fiddler Eleanor Whitmore.
Gibson remains jeans-and-boots down to earth, as unpretentious as a puppy. Her songs are often autobiographical and sometimes poke gentle fun at herself while exploring her feelings. "My emotions are so close to the surface," she said. "I explore myself at the risk of not fixing it because then it wouldn't be there to explore again. That sounds self-deprecating - that I leave wounds open so I can go back in and see if they still bleed. It's keeping a little soft spot, a bruise, and poking at it so you can keep feeling that tenderness, that sensitivity.
"It's pain, but that's not the defining thing. The defining thing is the healing or the methods we all use to get over that stuff. I like humor and I like hearing people laugh, even if it's laughing at me. Laughing and crying are so close."
Gibson, born in Fridley, Minnesota, grew up in Amarillo, Texas. She sang in church and school choirs for 15 years until she performed Suzanne Vega's "Gypsy" in the Amarillo High School talent show. Hooked, she learned the entire catalogues of Vega, Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, and Shawn Colvin and eventually began writing her own songs.
After a stint in forest ranger school in Missoula, Montana in 1992 and 1993, she discovered open-mic nights and developed her own solo gigs and eventually joined The Groobees. They performed and released two CDs over five years until May 2001, after two band members' wives had children and a third wanted to get off the road.
The Dixie Chicks' version of Gibson's "Wide Open Spaces" made it the best-selling country song of all time, giving her the artistic freedom to write, perform, and record with few constraints.
She's excited about working with O'Connor, Whitmore, and the rest of the band.
"There are a lot of talented studio musicians who might have come in and heard the natural parts. But that's Michael's voice on some of his leads, and I can hear what he's saying. And Eleanor - she gave so much thought. Those guys gave 155 thousand percent."
Except for the quirky title song, the CD is filled with straightforward, peaceful sounding, likable songs whose topics range from weariness to yearning to love to memories.
"Chin Up" is an example of the kind of good, personal song an artist can make without the constraints of demographics and marketing trends. Written after most of the CD was already recorded, it's a banjo-based, part-sung, part-talky, humorous and meaningful look at Gibson's failure in third grade to pass the presidential fitness test - about knowing you can't call in sick again, about doing time behind the monkey bars, about trying to make it a game by pretending it's just a firing squad when they call your name.
She feels almost like an intermediary with her songs.
"It's almost like some people believe the preacher needs to be there to facilitate your talking to God," she said. "But when I'm singing about something, if it touches you it's something you already know. You don't really need that preacher. You can just go ahead and talk to God.
"I don't need someone to sing me a song or paint me a picture for me to get the picture as an audience member. If it touches something I already know or feel, that's why I relate to it. It's already there for me in some way.
"My subjects are really personal and specific to me, and the irony is that I hope you're not thinking about me when you listen to my songs. I hope you're thinking about yourself or somebody else. I hope you're thinking you weren't alone if you were picked on in school, or if you were the one who did the picking, or if you've been abandoned."

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

HBO, you're idiots!.......2007-05-07
This was a great show, and the music is awesome. Haunting and wistful, it's great in the background when working or taking a bubble bath.
best part isn't even by jeff beal.......2007-03-04
the tone for the shows music was created by wendy melvoin & lisa coleman...the theme they created is the best part of this cd. too bad more of the original music from the first season wasn't included in this compilation. also, just a correction to a previous post; the people who designed the main titles won the emmy, the jeff beal.
"Carnivale" review.......2006-11-04
Without a doubt "Carnivale" is head and shoulders above any series I have seen. There is not a weak point in any of the catagories.
the acting was superb. The Sets were awsome. The music was incredible. The lightening was phenominal.. Great great Series.

This is an excellent CD...I love it! There is not a single track that is not worth lisening to.
Awesome!.......2005-08-18
I am a huge fan of "Carnivale" and had hoped from the start for a soundtrack! THANK YOU!!! The music is AWESOME!

Album Description
The Midwest can be an unforgiving place. The winters are freezing, the summers are humid, and it's easy to feel landlocked by the vastness of earth in every direction. Chicago's Chin Up Chin Up (think optimism, not exercise) have successfully embodied that feeling with their second full-length; yet as bleak as things may appear, there's a pervasive feeling of hope inherent in the band's brand of avant pop which stretches further than the Windy City's skyline. Tragically, original bassist Chris Saathoff was struck by a car and killed before their first album ("We Should Have Never Lived Like Skyscrapers") was finished, so this release is a transitional record both metaphorically and literally. It takes its cues from "Skyscrapers" but ups the ante considerably, weaving hyper-literate songcraft with a new sense of melody and wit.

Definitely Deserves More Attention.......2007-06-26
This is one of the better albums I encountered in 2006, I can't believe there are no other reviews here.
Chin Up Chin Up has taken a page from the complex rhythmic structures of peers like Make Believe and from the "techy" pop of label-mates Minus The Bear, and combined them to create an entirely original pop sound.
Jangly, angular (jangular?) melodies and witty, clever lyrics give this album its positive vibe, and Jeremy Bolan's vocal delivery is earnest without seeming to try to hard. Everything interconnects so perfectly, that each element's individual properties become indistinguishable from the whole. Not a note is out of place.
And it's fun to dance to!

Customer Reviews:
Best CD I've heard in years, no joke.......2005-12-17
This CD is fantastic. The sound is great (unlike what the other reviewer said), and these guys are obviously very good musicians. The drums in particular are great, I could listen to them alone and still be happy, and there are lots of interesting guitar parts. My favorite track is the title track, I've probably heard it hundreds of times by now (it's #1 on my Ipod by a long way) and I still always start nodding my head when the drums come in. The band's sound ie pretty hard to categorize, maybe up-tempo shoegaze? Psychedlic ambient indie? Sigur Ros crossed with the Strokes? Whatever terms you can come up with, this is just a great rock CD. I highly, highly recommend them.
Vocals inaudible . ........2005-07-21
I bought Chin Up's cd . . .the songs are great . .and the vocals would be great but the they are so buried in the mix they are hard to hear. This is so annoying that I can't listen to the cd.
post-rock for the masses.......2004-12-15
I went to see bear vs. shark and these guys opened. bear vs. shark were better than average scream-along punk, and chin up chin up were absolutely fantastic. I was thinking explosions in the sky with vocals or something. The high-register synths and guitars twist together into a big wave of prettiness, and the singer contorts and twists and moans along. In general, if the drumming were better, and i mean giddy motors or mogwai calibre, chin up chin up could be one of the best bands around. Still, this is my favorite find of 04.
Excellent Indie Rock.......2004-11-28
I had a chance to see Chin Up Chin Up live and a friend of mine bought the cd pre-release. I begged to have a copy every day and I was so happy when I finally got it. Not only does this cd have some of the best song titles(Why Is My Sleeping Bag a Ghetto Muppet?) but some of the most calming vocals I've ever heard.
In my opinion, the stand out tracks on the cd are: Why is my sleeping bag a ghetto muppet?, We Should Have Never Lived Like Skyscrapers, Falcons and Vulcans, Collide the Tide, and The Architect has a gun. Give the whole cd a try before you limit yourself to favorites, though. It's very good.
Good farkin' indie........2004-11-26
I don't feel like doing a real review, so I'm just going to say a few quick things. Chin-Up Chin-Up is actually a local band that I heard about a year ago, and when I found out that they were getting some attention from critics it greatly excited me because this band is incredible. Very textured and moody rock music with lots of layered guitars, technical yet not flashy drumming, and a unique vocal sound. Highly reccomended; very cool album.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31
The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.
Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09
I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.
Great Collection.......2001-12-25
Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!
Exceptional.......2001-11-30
I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!
A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29
To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Potential is there.......2007-06-09
That album has some interesting melodies, however, it is hard to get passed the vocals at times. The vocals are very labored and somewhat hidden in the mix. Sometimes you're straining to hear them, and other times you are wished you hadn't. Worth a listen if it's up your alley.
Good, albeit kind've derivative, indie rock - you'll probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-10
Though "Chin Up Chin Up" is mostly standard-fare indie rock with a semi-raw sound, it's good and catchy enough to be worth checking out. Every song here is good, and some are even standout tracks (see "For All The Tanning Salons In Texas" and "Collide The Tide"). The production and musicianship is wonderful - it's all crisp and clear, plus the drums are hardhitting and fun to listen to (I know, I love hearing the drums for some reason). The worst part about the album is the singer - he's not bad, but he could've been a lot better. The lyrics are also not really worth listening to, but most of that's due to the fact that you can barely make them out even if you're paying close attention. Overall it's a very good indie rock album that fans of the genre will like, and I think it also has some good appeal otherwise. If you liked this then chances are you'll also like Chad Vangaalen's "Infiniheart" and Moggs' "The White Belt Is Not Enough". Highly recommended!

Do the Dave.......2004-03-10
Last Chance Dave's 'Chin Up' is a stupendous cd from a tremendous up and coming band. I find the first time I listened to the cd, I was caught up in the harmonies that were running around my head all day. The more you listen, the more you discover the meaning in each song and subject matter that gives depth to their great song writing. This is a cd that is stimulating on many levels and it would be a crime to deprive yourself of the Last Chance Dave experience. That's my 2 cents. Enjoy.
Interesting.......2003-04-14
I was given this album by a die hard LCD fan. I found it to be different and odd. I guess it takes college age people to appreciate this type of music. I am 24 years old and even if I was still in college this would not be an album I would buy.
what a find!.......2003-04-09
I stumbled upon this great new band, Last Chance Dave, while browsing for new music online. I recently purchased this disc and must compliment the songwriters/musicians involved in this stellar album. I think they have a unique sound musically coupled with heart-felt lyrics. I would recommend this to anyone interested in hearing an excellent blend of alt.country and rock.
Quality Rock Music.......2003-04-08
This c.d. is a great blend of all kinds of sounds. I really like the way all the songs have a different sound to them. It is good to hear a band playing original music.
Disappointing.......2003-04-07
I was anxious to buy this CD, but I was so disappointed when I listened to it. Not much to get excited about/average music/doesn't hold my attention. Too bad!!
