There's never a note out of place, a chart too excessive, or the sentiments too sentimental. Plus Midler's tasty stable of producers and arrangers have packed the big band and stringed arrangements with their own musical warmth against Midler's smart song choices and contagious vocal performances. Cool Yule mixes the standard traditional pop pieces--like Steve Allen's snappy title track, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas"--with the sole hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emanuel." But nobody's picking up this stocking stuffer because they want to go to church. Bette's got merrymaking on her mind more than anything else. Her duet with Johnny Mathis on "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" is as much fun as her "From a Distance (Christmas Version)" is a somber and sobering antiwar statement. How she can move from sounding girlish and playful to sophisticated and jazz-smart in the space of one note to the next may not be supernaturally inspired, but it sure is fun to hear the joyful sounds she makes. Cool Yule is the most great song out of this album but the rest of the songs are pretty good. I have watched Cool Yule video but I dont know where the video went it just disappeared I am alittle disppointed tho but I can always watch the video of Cool Yule at different website so I dont worry about it.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis

Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.

The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.

This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

Blues musicians don't record Christmas songs that often, but Rhino Records managed to find 18 Christmas blues songs for this CD. Charles Brown's definitive recording of "Merry Christmas Baby" is well known, but the rest of the tracks are pretty obscure. There are a lot of good songs here, with my personal favorites being the ones by Eddie C. Campbell and Canned Heat. If you have any interest in the blues, this is the Christmas CD to get.

Well, let's see. As I write this review, the date is December 8th, 2004, and it's another two weeks and three days till Christmas finally arrives on the 25th. Since virtually every place in Creation started playing Christmas music on November 1st, you've had 38 days to become thoroughly SICK of the same dozen songs played over and over again from every radio station and retail establishment. Want some relief? How about an album chock-full of great Christmas BLUES music, that truly sounds more like blues that like standard, overplayed holiday ditties? Well, folks, get this CD!! It's nice and long (18 tracks) and only one or two numbers are overly familiar (and one of those, Charles Brown's immortal "Merry Christmas Baby," is usually considered the top Christmas blues recording of all time!) Standouts include Canned Heat (Their song is straightforward blues, not the novelty track they spun with ALvin and the Chipmunks), Detroit Junior with his hard-driving boogie "Christmas Day", the Pilgrim Travelers and their delightful, close-harmony doo-wop gospel classic, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and the always-irrepresible Louis Jordan with "Santa Claus, Santa Claus." There's not a bad number in the bunch, but the pick of this holiday litter must go to Edddie Campbell and his delicious take on the Junior Wells masterpiece, here titled "Santa's Messin' With the Kid". So don't delay! Order today, there's still time to get it rushed to you by Christmas. Do it, and the best yuletide blues and r and b will be home to you, if not by Christmas, then by New Years night.

I tracked this down during this Christmas season after hearing Canned Heat's "Christmas Baby" on a Heineken commercial of all places. Immediately hooked, I sent off an e-mail asking Heineken for the name of the song and to my surprise, they responded. Searching on Amazon, I found it on this CD and purchased it. What was bought for one song soon became my favorite Christmas compilation complete with Big Jack Johnson, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson. Even the lesser known Poppa Hop and The Pilgrim Travelers make notable contributions on this disc.
A good pick for this upcoming Christmas holiday.

I own about 6 or more Christmas jazz CDs/tapes but this remains my favorite - so much so that we now have to buy it again because we wore our the tape.

For us it is perfect background music for mellow parties, opening presents, dinner, etc. I have wonderful memories of listening to this tape in the car during long drives to the family.

But the CD is NOT elevator music - it's a quality collection, worth listening to with the volume up. Some of my Christmas jazz CDs tend to be un-imaginative saxophone versions of tired Christmas classics. Not this CD - the songs are original and creative.

Lastly, it is "approachable" - the kind of jazz that non-experts (like me) tend to understand and enjoy.

This is a jazzy blues yuletide compilation with classic jazz artists such as Chet Baker, Count Basie and Dexter Gordon playing some traditional holiday favorites. In addition, two versions of an original Thelonious Monk composition called "A Merrier Christmas" are also included. Contemporary jazz artists such as John Scofield and Benny Green also perform some compositions and vocal tracks by Lou Rawls and Dianne Reeves further add to the overall diversity of this compilation.

I bought this CD a couple years ago and enjoyed it somewhat at the time, only to re-discover it this Christmas season and now I find I am playing it constantly! There are a variety of styles here, from quiet piano to small combo to big band to loud, noisy contemporary arrangements. It all fits together very well, surprisingly enough, though I usually skip over the two vocal tracks. The cover and the title are references to a classic bop album of the fifties, Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin'.

I've had this CD for several years and it is my favorite Holiday collection - lots of fun, jazzy arrangements which are festive, original and sure to cure your holiday blues. Instrumental Talent - not breathy synthesized fru fru music. If you like music live, jazz or blues, this is for you.

It isn't often that a parent can enjoy listening to a child's cd over, and over, and over... But this one is definitely an exception - like most Wiggles cds. Their rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy" is something else - it's very nice and finally, I got the real meaning of that song after 40+ years of listening to it! I'm not slow, just like others who listen with half an ear and not really paying attention. The song "Curoo, Curoo" is amazing with Morgan Crowley. His voice on those high notes is just something else. But, by far, my favorite song on this cd is their rendition of "The First Noel." Each Wiggle takes a verse and speaks it, dramatically, and especially notable is Murray's contribution to this effort. His verse gives you goosebumps and takes you right there to the Nativity. They intersperse the spoken verses with a choir singing the chorus and the soprano they've used is just out of this world. Her voice alone will melt chocolate! Imagine melted chocolate how smooth and creamy it is and that's what her voice will do to you. I've mentioned things that are over the kids' heads with this album, which is typical Wiggles. They do stuff for the adults too while introducing things to kids that they would probably not learn for quite some time. My little one just asks for this all year long. Which is great when you're sweating buckets in mid July! I think it makes you feel cooler.

Next Christmas Eve, when it's getting late, the snow is falling, the kids are looking for Santa, and you're traveling to your destination, pop this one in and have the kids hear their rendition of "The First Noel." Christmas will have a whole new meaning to everyone listening.

My daughter is now 5 and we got this cd last year when she was really into the Wiggles--she doesn't watch the shows anymore but she still loves to dance to the music. This CD is great-very fun for the holiday season. We both dance to Murray's Christmas Samba and to Decorate the Tree. There are traditional songs as well as really fun new ones in the Wiggle style.

This is Harry's last album under another name. It was originally entitled Sequel on Boardwalk Records. There are many references on the Bottom Line Collection to these songs. There are a few dynamic sleepers that most Chapin fans don't often refer to on this CD. Up On The Shelf is almost eerie in two of the last lines of the song "My song is almost over now, my story's at an end. You've lived yourself a good life, but a blind one." The music is rich, the words descriptive throughout. Harry always had a way of honing his words to fit the characters in his stories and this album is no different. "Remember When The Music" is a classic, but having twice on the same disc is a little overdone. "I Miss America" perfectly captures the angst and anger of the then-dawning Reagan years, missing the rose-colored eyesight that now exists in retrospect. "Sequel" brings Harry and Sue full Circle and remains the perfect bookend for the original 1972 work. In the end, knowing now what you didn't know at its release it leaves you wishing that we could hear Harry's voice ringing out from shore to shore in the name of the helpless, the homesless and the hungry. One last note: I have no clue whether or not the Chapin family receives any money for this. My unknowing, uneducated guess is that whoever owned the rights and tapes to this album sold it out from Boardwalk Records.

I love Harry Chapin's music and would never trash it under any circumstances. But I don't think his fans should buy this CD. It is not authorized by the Chapin estate or the related entities that own the rights to the songs found on it. No royalites are being paid to the proper parties. This applies only to the "Storyteller" CD. The rest of the CDs listed on this site are properly licensed by the appropriate Chapin entities. No opinion is expressed as to the quality of the music, because this is a terrific set of Chapin songs. But this CD is a bootleg. OK, so I am biased. I unfortunately only got to see Harry Live in concert twice. I would love for all of his records to be on CD. What is with that? If enough of us complain, maybe they will be.

I bought two of Storyteller; one for work and one at home. I was on Real Networks tonight and heard some Harry I had not heard before; it was great!!! As far as this CD goes, I give it a four star rating, I am partial to Living Room Suite. Vic

    Very rarely is one able to find songs that both date back to old times in Celtic and Northern European life and new songs that connect the ancient to the modern. But this album does just that.

    The songs are good for celebrating the entire Celtic season of Samhain, and are good for both Christian and pagan purposes. Though the songs are all good, the best ones are probably tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 9.

    Song one is about celebrating life in the midst of death, an old Celtic way of viewing the New Year. The second song is a mix of ways of celebrating Yule; it begins with a Medieval Gregorian chant, then moves onto an older Celtic view of Yule (using the same mellody). Track four is about the year being renewed by the beginning of winter; track five is an old (Northumbrian?) Medieval English song sung in pubs on cold nights. Song seven is the Greensleeves mellody with more traditional/ancient words. And song nine is an old Scottish-Christian tune about the Christ Child.

    This is a wonderful collection of songs to either add some mystery (and older ways) to your Christmas holiday or to celebrate Christmas and/or the Winter Solstice.

    I adore this album for Solstice-time. "Yule is Come" is such a happy, upbeat song, that I've used in ritual since hearing it. "Gaia's Lullaby" is one of the most moving songs I've ever heard and makes me tear up. "Bring Us Good Ale" is hilarious and for some reason makes me think of Hobbits..."Dance to Your Shadow" will make you do just that.

    Buy it, love it, and put it on constant repeat right after Samhain!

    I loved this music! I've always been really into Yule, but for years I've been looking for music that celebrates the season, not the Christian holiday. This is a lovely collection of songs, some traditional, some original, that remind us what Yule is all about: joy, light, music, good friends and warming celebrations during the darkest time of the year.

    EN LA FETE DE NOEL is one of those "why not?' choices that find a way into my music library. It looked interesting and the price was right. Why not take a chance? I'm glad I took the chance because it's worth far more than its modest price.

    It's not the most complex recording in the world. The choir La Petite Bande de Montreal under the direction of conductor Martin Dagenais sing Christmas carols, sometimes accompanied by the organ and at other times without any accompaniment at all. Most of the carols are sung in French, and some that do not translate easily into French are performed in English. Each carol is sung with great beauty and the performance allows the simplicity of the carols to bring out the musical and spiritual qualities so inherent in these works. While each carol is performed well, the real treasure of this recording would be the French carols. There are a variety included in the collection such as the well known "Les Anges Dans Nos Compagnes" (Angels we have Heard on High) and favorite of many "Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant" but the set also contains a number not included on most standard collections in English.

    Most of the carols are religious pieces, with the exception of "The Carol of the Bells." For me this is a plus. While I do love so much of the music associated with the Christmas season, both religious and secular, I have a special spot for music that is beautiful and conveys the spiritual message of Christmas, and this is something I believe this set does well. Since Christmas recordings can often be as commercial as the holiday itself is becoming, it's refreshing to find a disc that evokes the beauty of Christmas while recalling what the season is all about: the birth of Christ.

    I confess to liking French Christmas carols, and these are performed extremely well by La Petite Bande de Montréal under director Martin Dagenais. There is a lively folk quality to so many French carols, and others are more lyrical.

    A number of the tunes will be familiar to English speakers, of course, such as Sainte nuit (Silent Night), Les anges dans nos campagnes (Angels We Have Heard on High), perhaps Le sommeil de l'enfant Jésus (The Sleep of the Infant Jesus), Jesous Ahatonhia (Huron Carol), Carol of the Bells (a Ukrainian carol, sung in English), and Adeste Fideles.

    There are many typically French carols, such as Noël nouvelet, Ah! Quel grand mystère, Dans cette étable, Il est né le divin enfant, and what I think is the most beautiful of all carols, Bel astre que j'adore.

    Bel astre has such beautiful words, compressed and full of meaning, which cover most of Christian spirituality. I love Bel astre and have sung it many times as a solo. La petite bande de Montréal gives it a smooth and beautiful rendition, and every word is clear.

    The organ accompaniment is restrained and very beautiful.

    If I could give this a Rosette, as in the Penguin Guide, I would. This is a very special disc. The recording is excellent, middling forward in presentation, yet very smooth and natural. The performances are outstanding, very expressive. This group doesn't know how to sing a dull note! A very lovely disc, whether you understand any French or not. This is a must have Christmas disc.
