The Wood and the Wire
The Wood and the Wire
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Fairport Convention has gone through so many personnel changes over the years that it's more of a state of mind than a band. On 2000's The Wood & the Wire, which features the group's 23rd incarnation, longtime members Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg join 15-year veteran Ric Sanders, relative newcomer Chris Leslie, and old-pro folk-rock drummer Gerry Conway. The sound leans more to the folk side of the folk-rock equation and includes plenty of fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars, with an occasional electric guitar solo thrown in to remind us of the rock side. Most of the songs here were composed by Leslie, and while they don't rise to the level of those of former Fairport songwriters Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson (but then again, whose songs do?), tunes like "The Dancer" and "Banbury Fair" do have a bucolic charm. The Wood & the Wire is the work of a band that is happy with its place in the world and is content to make music that evokes the past without wallowing in nostalgia. --Michael Simmons

SUBTLE / BRILLIANT / AWESOME.......2004-06-17
Well I gush, so shoot me. All reviews are correct. Great BLUES, great songs, intelligent lyrics, great musos, originality and a wicked sense of humour. If you like the BLUES, you are missing out, if this isn't in your collection. After receiving this CD, my wife and I danced around the living room for close to an hour, one of the highest compliments we can pay to any CD.
Hard Driving Blues/Rock with a touch of Zydeco-- great stuff.......2003-12-15
Every one of the Glamour Puss CDs is filled with energy : these hard-working musicians from the Maritimes certainly know how to party. Musically speaking, the album is impressive, there are no fillers, all the tracks bear listening to over and over again. Amazing guitar pieces, beautiful songs, a really tight band...
It's in my car, and it gets played every day, sometimes twice, and I can tell you right now that it's going to liven up our holiday season this year.
For guitar lovers, there are a couple of really good cuts ("Blues for Sheila", and "Wire and Wood"). Furlong also wrote one of my faves on this album, "Hollow Man". Cry-in-your-beer kind of song about loneliness. Other favourites change from day to day : the soulful "If You Miss Me" just makes you want to be slow-dancing in someone's arms, the rollicking "Mama Don't Play No Zydeco" will have you bouncing up and down, "Dangereuse", well... if I start listing tracks, I might have to list them all, and I didn't even mention the amazing rhythm section, or the quite brilliant sax instrumental, or... or... or...
A very exciting new album, and I hope it gets the recognition and awards it deserves.
These dudes really know how to sing the blues!.......2003-12-15
I highly recommend this cd even if this isn't one of your favorite styles of music. I've really enjoyed it, listening to it when having friends over for drinks and even dancing to it in the shower. It's multi-purposeted. A+ for lyrics and groove. My favorite song is Million-Air. This was the first I've heard of them and now I'm interested in hearing some of their other stuff.

... And I thought I knew all the music fit to sing!.......2001-07-31
Wood and the Wire was my introduction to Fairport Convention. Stumbled across it by "mistake" and needing one more CD for free shipping, it has not only become a staple on my stereo, but compelled me to purchase other titles. Slowly but surely those close to me are becoming addicted as well. The beat is amazing, the words paint pictures. The more I listen, the more I hear.
An awful new direction for a beloved band.......2001-04-14
Bad poetry set to music, with most tunes sounding like a bad American neo-coutry album. I made the mistake of buying this record at the same time as Angel Delight. The lack-luster songwriting, lifeless performances and poor choice of material would have disappointed me anyway, and played back-to-back with the almost flawless Angel Delight the shortcoming of Wood and The Wire were even more evident.
I can see why Dave Mattacks left this band!

Fairport fans, rejoice!.......2000-09-08
Fairport has come up with a few good gems since Sandy Denny's departure, true, but their albums had always been somewhat uneven since. By the time of Jewel in the Crown they showed they could still put together a few good tunes, but they were edging perilously close to becoming folk/rock's equivalent of Pink Floyd - a band coasting on past achievements and name recognition. I was worried that after a couple more albums their slide down this slippery slope would be complete and we'd be left with only our old copies of Liege & Lief and Unhalfbricking to console us.
Well well, how wrong I was. To be honest I like Martin Allcock and Dave Mattacks, but on this album they're hardly even missed. The others, along with newcomer Chris Leslie, play with a spirit and energy I haven't heard from them in years. There's a bigger emphasis on guitars and string instruments (as if the title wasn't a giveaway) and fewer keyboards. The band's rejuvenated spirit pervades everything, even the more 'serious' numbers such as Sanders' "Year and a Day" and the somber "The Lady Vanishes." If you've been a little indifferent about Fairport's last few releases, don't hesitate to pick this one up. It's good to have them back.
Fairport Rules!.......2000-07-31
This is a highly enjoyable effort from Dave Pegg,Simon Nichol, and Co.
Chris Leslie(who joined for the "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" album) emerges as a wonderful songwriter,as well as a master musician, playing guitar, violin Greek lute, mandolin, and even the Native Australian didgeridoo!(on his beautiful "The Wandering Man")
New drummer Gerry Conway shows his stuff on a wide array of exotic percussion.

Album Description
Opening with the stoic rock of "Starting Out," the obligatory pop of "Sun," and "Love," to the poetic folk of "The End," this record pleasingly runs the gamut. Although CVS is often found in his studio producing his own albums or other artists', Wood and Wire was recorded entirely in the NY metro area with a winning combination of musicians including Peter Straus (Dwarves) and Dennis Diken (Smithereens).
Customer Reviews:
Buy the two earlier albums instead.......1999-11-02
This album represents a big step away from the varied musical approach of his two earlier albums, Sight&Sound and Big White Lies. The melodies are just as good, but the songs differ less from each other and from the rest of pop music than his tunes did on the first two. It's as though some spark has been lost in the transition from doing almost all the instruments to having a full band behind him. Perhaps the album was easier to record, but it's just doesn't have the same appeal for me (although that's asking a lot - I really like the other two albums).
One of the best kept secrets of pop/folk rock of the 90s.......1999-10-16
Wood and Wire is a real treat for the ears. Chris Von Sneidern is one of the best kept secrets of modern pop music. This album, which is much better produced than his previous "Sight and Sound," shows a true melodic genius reaching a wonderful stage of maturity. It brings a 90s flavor to the folk and pop rock of the late 1960s and early 70s. From the opening chords of "Starting Out" to the Dylanesque pathos of "The End," this CD is full of hooks and lush harmonies. Instrumentation varies from simple guitar to more complex arrangements using everything from horns to harpsichord. If you have any attraction at all to power pop, you will find this to be one treasure that you will play again and again. Truly one of the outstanding pop recordings of the late 1990s.
This is the finest album of 1998!!!.......1999-01-04
Chris von Sneidern is one of the few artists today who has managed to assimilate the best elements of pop music and turn them into something that is uniquely his own. Beautiful, melodic and moving, every song is a masterpiece. "Lines" is a Triple A hit waiting to happen.
