A first-class CD. Excellent arrangements, especially with London Symphony on "Winding Road."

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant arrangements and performance.......2007-03-06

Aside from the folks who would otherwise waste an opportunity to discuss the worthiness of this album, I fully endorse it as an example of a beautiful combination of excellent playing and superb composing. A good arranger finds the perfect balance between keeping honest to the original music and exploring/exploiting the inherent qualities within it through different means. That's precisely what occurs with this album. You're hard pressed to find better arrangements than the Takemitsu. Leo Brower shows a deft touch for string writing in his arrangements and again his writing for the guitar is spot on. The final two arrangements by Mr. Lubbock are interesting, yet straying further from their original inspiration than the other arrangements, still manage to capture that lovely balance.

There aren't enough accolades to give Maestro Barrueco whose precision and musicianship are nearly unmatched (still a close second to Pepe Romero in my book). An excellent and interesting purchase for guitar, strings, and Beatles lovers alike.

3 out of 5 stars hmm..........2002-02-05

Um... for the record: All the Beatle songs other than those composed by George Harrison or Ringo Starr were credited to "Lennon-McCartney" or "John Lennon and Paul McCartney" by prior agreement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, whether they actually collaborated (as they did in many cases) or one of them worked by himself.

John Lennon wrote Ticket To Ride, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Hard Day's Night, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.

Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday, Here, There, And Everywhere, Fool On The Hill, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, and The Long And Winding Road.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney collaborated on Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home, and Michelle.

This is not the first CD on this site where you try to convince us that John wrote The fool on the hill and other songs written by Paul.I really can't believe you're so uninformed.

Album Description

It sounds like the plot of a classic Western saga: Six young men ride out of the South Carolina uplands seeking fame and adventure, dazzling crowds and creating a legend along the way. Actually, the above scenario describes The Marshall Tucker Band's rise to mass popularity in the mid-1970s. Like true Sunday-matinee cowboy heroes, the band made it thanks to a restless spirit and a tender heart, blazing a country-rock trail for later artists to follow.

Long Hard Ride, Marshall Tucker's 1976 album, came on the heels of their first Top 40 radio hit, "Fire On The Mountain." Striving to build upon this breakthrough, they delivered an album that mixed country, rock and blues into a distinctive whole. A good number of the tunes were radio-friendly numbers that reined in the band's jamming tendencies. But the individual playing styles that made Marshall Tucker unique clearly shone through, making Long Hard Ride a worthy addition to their catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01

All the finest ingredients of rock, country, blues, and jazz blended into a down-home gumbo as only The (original) Marshall Tucker Band could do it! The remastered series sounds superb audibly, and the packaging is beautifully restored- complete with historic photos and interesting liner notes. The Marshall Tucker Band remastered recordings of the original band- "Self Titled" through "Tenth"- are well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars For True Fans.......2006-02-08

As stated before, the album has a more country twang than other Marshall Tucker Band albums, but is not to be looked over. As part of the Southern Rock, MTB is more country than the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more blues than Charlie Daniels. This album brings out the country side in the band, especially with the title track "Long Hard Ride". The album is not a starting point for new MTB fans, but a definite for fans already enjoying other albums.

5 out of 5 stars A Return To Form For The Marshall Tucker Band.......2005-03-25

After the artistic disappointment of SEARCHIN' FOR A RAINBOW, the Marshall Tucker Band returned to the quality of their first three albums with LONG HARD RIDE. Compared to the previous album, which had only one good song, this one is top-notch through and through, and the reissue includes a song from bassist Tommy Caldwell's last show with the band. The fact that this album didn't do as well as its vastly inferior predecessor is, in my view, a perfect justification for music appreciation teachers to assign their students homework for over the summer, even if it does spoil their vacation plans. If you loved Marshall Tucker's first three albums, as well as anything by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers Band, or the Outlaws, you'll love LONG HARD RIDE.

4 out of 5 stars More country than the earlier albums and still great.......2004-02-19

"Long Hard Ride" is one of the underappreciated MTB albums, coming between "Searchin' For A Rainbow" (with it's Top 40 hit "Fire On The Mountain") and the platinum "Carolina Dreams" (with the band's biggest hit "Heard It In A Love Song"). The album gets off to a rousing start with "Long Hard Ride." With it's bullwhip, fiddle and memorable guitar lead it's a killer opening salvo. Toy Caldwell was simply one of the most distinctive, creative, and powerful guitarists ever. His work on the first 10 MTB albums withstands the test of time. My favorite track on the album has to be "Am I The Kind Of Man." A downtempo number, lyrically and musically it touches your heart and soul.

If you're looking to start your MTB collection begin with "Where We All Belong" and "A New Life" but if you're looking for a killer addition to your existing MTB collection this would be a great one to pick up. Oh, yeah! The CD reissue has not only much-improved sound, but also a killer bonus live track: "(If I Could) See You One More Time."

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

The follow-up to old folkie Jack Elliott's watershed release, Friends of Mine, The Long Ride is even more beguiling than its star-laden predecessor. The folk patriarch proves from the get-go that he doesn't need a bunch of famous pals to garner attention. The opening track finds him swerving his way through an unlikely cover of the Rolling Stones' "Connection" with irresistible buoyancy. With that opening highlight behind him, Elliott and producer Roy Rogers (who also helmed Friends of Mine) are off on a characteristically ad hoc escapade. A little Guthrie here, a Dylan tune there, an Ernest Tubb chestnut to keep 'em guessing, and some traditionals tossed in for good measure. Add a suitable Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan number ("Pony"), three originals, and a few lower-wattage guest stars (Dave Van Ronk, Tom Russell, Maria Muldaur, Dave Alvin) and you have an album that's as unpredictable, unassuming, and amiable as the man whose name it bears. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The Cowboy Poet Bob Dylan Started Out to Be.......2007-02-06

If you know Ramblin' Jack Elliott already, you know what you are in for. If you don't, what you are in for is a treat! There are better voices in the business and the there are better guitar players too. But there is no one with more deep-in-the-soul honesty than Ramblin' Jack. And remember Jack's an old man on this recording. You get all of those years of hard living and the accumulation of decades of contemplation of the human condition. My personal favorite is Cup of Coffee, a long (6 minutes) and kind of winding talking tale about the life of a truck driver that sounds like Bob Dylan of the 1960s at the age of 65 or more. His version of St. James Infirmary is hauntingly sad...but again with all that painful honesty that is Jack Elliott. And finally, With God on Our Side clocks in at 7:32 and it is the perfect blend of Jack's airy old voice and Bob Dylan's young man writing. Powerful commentary on the futility of war and the frailty of human life. You would have to search pretty hard to find a better marriage of artistic generations.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2005-04-13

I do not know too much about country music. But, the only reason I bought this CD is because there is a song that I like( St. James Infirmary), and I wanted to hear it from a country singer and see what it would sound like. The other songs have a nice rhythm to them. I think it's a good CD.

4 out of 5 stars THANK GOD FOR JACK ELLIOTT.......2005-04-05

THANK GOD FOR RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT

I've been a fan of Ramblin' Jack since the early 70's, and have had the honor and joy of seeing him in concert about six times. Yes, Jack's getting on in years, but he still picks guitar with the best of them, and his vocal phrasing continues to be a gift from the Almighty Something-or-other, to us. Jack's a music machine, one with (to paraphrase one of his songs) about two million miles on it, a machine designed and made-to-order for the expression of music. He's the real deal, folks.

As for this record, The Long Ride, I've listened to it only about, oh, two million times (where have I heard that before?) Sure, maybe it's not as great as Kerouac's Last Dream, which I think might be Jack's finest record. (Hell, it would be anybody's finest record.)

But to call The Long Ride "dreadful," as did the last person to review this record, is beyond my befuddled comprehension.

Where to begin? Jack's earthy voice is a perfect match for these songs, like Ernie Tubb's country classic, "Take Me Back and Try Me One More Time." And Jack's a terrific guitar player. (He invented this stuff. Taught it to Bob Dylan; taught it to Woody's kid, Arlo; taught it to the thousand of us folks in the US and Europe and all over this world, listening to his records, trying to figure out how he did it). His guitar playing really shines on "Cup of Coffee," and on the capo-way-up-high-on-the-fret board, gorgeous "Ranger's Command."

Back to the songs. "True Blue Jeans" would make an incredible ad for Levi's, if Jack were willing to sell out. If Levis had a sense of humor. Jack sure does have a sense of humor (How else does anyone make it to `round about 70?) And his humor burbles through several of the songs on this album, most notably "Cup of Coffee," and "Pony." Every time I listen to "Cup of Coffee," I smile LARGE and I smile WIDE, as this is one of the funniest versions of Jack's song that he's recorded. The great Tom Russell's input doesn't hurt, of course.

I love the duets on The Long Ride, particularly the harmony on "Pictures From Life's Other Side." Jack and Tom Russell give us a moving and memorable version of Tom's brilliant song, "The Sky Above and the Mud Below." Back and forth, Jack trades verses with Tom, the two of them sharing the song. Jack's a generous man, willing to share the stage with Maria Muldaur, with Tom, with Dave Alvin, with Dave Van Ronk, with anyone. He wouldn't need to. He likes the music, is all. Actually, he loves the music. And I, and many others, love him for it.

I'd like to end as I began- giving thanks. This time around I want to thank Jack.

THANK YOU, JACK ELLIOTT. LONG MAY YOU RIDE.

Your friend, Ray

1 out of 5 stars Clear Out the Party.......2001-01-26

Have you ever had folks over to your house for a party and start wishing they'd leave? This is the CD to clear the house. If you look at the songwriters (Mick Jagger, Woody Guthrie, Tom Waits, Tom Russell, Ernest Tubb, Bob Dylan) and some of the vocalists and musicians (Roy Rogers, Maria Muldaur, Norton Buffalo), you would think this ought to be a great CD. The 6-minute chat called "Cup of Coffee" with a little guitar behind it has to be one of the most pointless pieces anybody's bothered to record. I read a great review in a magazine. It had been on my most wanted list for a long time. I know that I'll probably garner my share of "unhelpful" votes since we all prefer to say nice things. But this is one cowpoke whose time has come to go to pasture. If you're wishing you were around a campfire listening to friends who don't sing well, this CD might find a niche. I haven't heard anything this dreadful since the L.A. Burgers or Yoko Ono imitated a washing machine. Save your money; and for sure listen to the samples before you buy!

3 out of 5 stars a sometimes bumpy ride.......2000-02-01

Ramblin' Jack Elliott's return to recording -- this is his third CD in recent years -- after a silence of more than 25 years is gratifying. And in Roy Rogers, who put together this and the previous CD, he's found a sympathetic producer who can actually make Elliott's erratic sound mesh with other instruments. The Long Ride, however, is an uneven, sometimes bumpy excursion. "Connection," the old Rolling Stones song that opens the disc, is essentially a throwaway. "Cup of Coffee," six+ minutes of Elliott and Tom Russell clowning around, is amusing once. "With God on Our Side" is every bit as clunky and ham-fisted as it was when a very young Bob Dylan wrote it in the early 1960s. "Ranger's Command" and Tom Waits's "Pony" are both good songs which deserve better than the shaky treatments here. On the other hand, the duets on two traditional folk standards, "St. James Infirmary" (with Dave Van Ronk) and "East Virginia Blues" (with Dave Alvin), border on perfection. Russell and Elliott rehabilitate their musical partnership with a suitably dark, brooding take on Russell's grim Western ballad "The Sky Above and the Mud Below." A Woody-and-Cisco anecdote -- can there ever be enough of these? -- engagingly introduces the venerable 19th-Century parlor weeper and old-time country staple "Picture from Life's Other Side." In short: this is about half of a successful recording.

Although singer/guitarist Long John Hunter has been on the national scene for only a few years, he has been playing the west Texas bar and dancehall circuit for well over four decades. For a long time Hunter was the undisputed king of the El Paso/Juarez blues scene, playing in one Juarez bar (backed by a group of Mexican ex-bartenders!) for thirteen years. In all that time he only did a handful of obscure recordings, but he has finally begun to get the attention he deserves. John's music is good-time blues, meant for partying and dancing. There is little brooding here, few dark moments. An able guitarist and warm vocalist, he is backed by a tight rhythm section and some blasting horns. The horn section is led by dynamic tenor saxman Mark Kazanoff, who pulls off some of the best solos on the disc. If your taste leans to high energy Texas blues, pick this one up; it'll fit perfectly between your Albert Collins and Gatemouth Brown CDs. --Lars Gandil

I recently caught Long John Hunter playing at John Lee Hooker's Boom, Boom Room in San Francisco. He came out at Nine and played straight till two in the morning. This Cd captures his live sound very well. He has a soulful singing voice and makes every note from his Fender Strat sing with great emotion. I had never heard of him before but during the show I knew I would be buying all of his albums. Get Owee Babee for his early recordings made in a Mexican Border town where he played all night every night. And for a true Blues experience go see the Man.

Everything old is new again. Or perhaps that's what the marketing big-wigs at RCA were thinking when they decided that latest CD by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra should simply be a "greatest hits" package -- selections culled from Lockhart's five previously released CDs. It's a gimmick that works, since those tracks chosen are truly the best of the best: "Riverdance" and "Magh Scola" from the Grammy-nominated "The Celtic Album;" "Sleigh Ride" and "Farandole" from "Holiday Pops;" "The Stars and Stripes Forever" from "A Splash of Pops." To add a bit of freshness, the closes with "Long Live the King!" a medley of Presley tunes recorded love at Boston's Symphony Hall for a PBS special. No wonder he can't help falling in love -- once again -- with the man who keeps a lock on our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars The Boston Pops at Their Best!!.......2001-07-14

This has got to be the best orchestral CD I have ever purchased! My intent for buying the CD was not because of the Pops themselves (I wasn't very familiar with them or Keith Lockhart at the time), but my orchestra had played two of the songs on the CD so I thought it would have been neat to have a professional recording of them. A couple months later, here I am, I know how each one of the songs go, it never leaves my CD player unless I go somewhere (it goes too) and let me tell you Mr. Lockhart is a hottie- whether he knows it or not! Only because of this Cd, (and watching Pops Goes the Fourth) I have bought every other Boston Pops CD conducted by Keith Lockhart. They are outstanding musicians and this is the best "greatest hits so far" CD. It has pretty much 2 songs from each past CD- Tracks 1 and 4 from Runnin' Wild; Tracks 2 and 5 from The Celtic Album; Tracks 3 and 8 from American Visions; Tracks 6 and 9 from Holiday Pops; and tracks 7 and 10 from A Splash of Pops. Track 11 is Keith's introduction to Long Live the King and Track 12 is, obviously, Long Live the King-A Tribute to Elvis which has never been released before. And it's pretty sad I knew all of that without having to look at the CD case, huh? That just shows you how well put together this CD is, with a mix of everything for everyone. From the slow, beautiful "Magh Scola" ("The Level Plain") to "American Patrol" back to "A Hymn to New England" (written by former Boston Pops conductor and composer to just about every famous movie their is John Williams) and of course, their trademark "Stars and Stripes Forever", this CD is perfect for anyone with a love of classical music, or the Boston Pops Orchestra. And their tuba player better watch out- I am definetly going to replace him soon :)

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2000-07-26

Keith Lockhart does it again. All of America's favorites on one album plus a tribute to the King. It goes to show what a wonderful and masterful conductor Keith is and what a great orchestra the BSO is. Their finest album with Keith thus far. He truly is one of the best conductors in the business. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves the spirit of the Pops. It's superb all around.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Boston Pops.......2000-06-25

This is a wonderful repertoire of the kind of music played by the Boston Pop. It's for all ages. If anyone wants one CD that is representative of the Boston Pop Orchestra, this is it! Kudos to Keith Lockhart for including a medley by the King. This is my favorite Boston Pop CD next to "Runnin Wild" and the "Holiday at PoPs".

5 out of 5 stars 6th CD!.......2000-04-25

I went home this weekend and look what I picked up! The 6th ablum by Mr. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops! Great CD, love the music selections that Keith made to put in this one and I loved the Long Live the King! A Slaute to Elvis. You haven't heard anything until you have heard a full orchestra play Elvis Presley music. Number six, and it was great! My favorite piece is DoddleTOWN Fifers, or whatever it is called. The MCV (Middlesex County Vouleenters) are great, and I'm not just saying that because I know Earl, the Music Master for the group, they are good.

Becky Archibald's "The Long Ride Home" is a fascinating collection of musical "journeys" in a broad range of styles and approaches from `40's jazz to boogie to new age with an edge. This is not music to snooze to, as the styles vary a lot, but it is music that invites your full attention and participation to savor the innuendoes and subtleties of Archibald's piano playing. Not many composers include humor in their music, and it's fun to find two songs in this collection that invite chuckles or at least smiles. "Sumthin' Funky" is a quickie piece that explores dissonance with high energy and a catchy beat. "Daddy's Kind of Rock" is even more fun. Taking inspiration from her father's record collection, Archibald throws in splashes of Henry Mancini, James Bond, and other recognizable themes and ties them together with an infectious walking bass line. I really enjoy this piece! "40's Love Song" is a slinky bit of nostalgia that would be comfortable in any piano bar. It's not a cheap imitation, though - this piece is full of poignancy and emotion. "Haunted" gracefully tells the story of ridding her piano of annoying noises by following inner instructions to avoid playing specific notes on the piano. The tone of the piece goes from mysterious to flowing and back to mysterious. "Sunrise" takes on a more "new age" feel - more quiet and abstract than some of the other pieces. "Strength Within" continues in this style, but is bolder, as the title suggests, contrasting strength with gentleness. This is definitely one of my favorites! "The Secret" is almost ambient with its atmospheric openness. The title track is a semi-bluesy ballad that closes a very impressive and expressive listening experience. I highly recommend "The Long Ride Home" to those who are looking for more than background music.
