About the Artist
Peter Mayer and brother Jim Mayer were born in India, the sons of missionary parents who spent a total of 17 years there. In 1966, the family moved to America where Jim and Peter pursued a career in music. Peter studied classical and jazz guitar, and for three years taught the jazz guitar studies course at Webster University. Jim studied classical bass at the conservatory of music in St. Louis and has performed with such artists as Herb Ellis, Pat Metheny, James Moody, Eddie Harris and Howard Johnson. The Mayer brothers, together with drummer Roger Guth, formed the pop group "PM" and in 1988 were signed to Warner Brothers Records and their single "Piece of Paradise" reached number 8 on the Billboard adult contemporary charts. PM toured with the groups Chicago and the Moody Blues, and later was asked by Jimmy Buffett to go on tour with his Coral Reefer Band -- one summer has turned into 11 tours and 7 albums with the Jimmy Buffett Band. During the time off from tours with Buffett, PM released two additional albums and Peter has pursued a solo career, releasing three albums of his own.

R. Scott Bryan plays percussion with this ensemble, but has a wide range of musical abilities that include guitar, keyboards, bass, French horn and a strong voice. Bryan toured for five years with Sheryl Crow, sharing the stage with the likes of Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones.

Mark Holland plays Native American wood flute, concert flute and various wind instruments. Having studied with members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Holland has logged 20 years of playing experience on the concert flute.

Ron Vince plays violin and mandolin regularly with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He has played electric as well as acoustic violin in a variety of groups with styles ranging from classical to rock, to jazz.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

"Stars and Promises" is the title of the new Christmas album, released this holiday season by Peter Mayer. It features six brand new Peter Mayer songs, including a collaboration with acclaimed hymn writer Herbert Brokering, entitled, "Wings Of Angels." The album also celebrates traditional carols, such as, "Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Little Drummer Boy," and others. They are performed with fresh arrangements, incorporating a variety of stylistic influences from classical ("Christmas Overture"), folk ("Sing Joy"), popular ("This Christmas") and jazz ("What Child Is This"). Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Named for the best song on the CD............2007-01-02

Peter Mayer is best known for his collaborations with Jimmy Buffet, but he's a true musician and songwriter in his own right.

"Stars and Promises", Mayer's Christmas CD, is about 6 years old at this point, and for those who have purchased it, it is a breath of fresh air. Mayer follows the formula of blending old carols into new songs. His choice of the old:

"Christmas Overture" - blending 4 known carols in an instrumental appetizer to the rest of the album; "What Child is This?", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing";"Little Drummer Boy" - with some truly unique percussion; and "Silent Night"-a beautifully paced version, played primarily with native american flutes, followed by acoustic guitar. It is perhaps the loveliest version I've heard.

The real mother lode in the CD is found in the original music, 7 songs penned or co-written by Mayer. Mayer's folky voice and acoustic guitar skills are secondary only to his songwriting skills. The songs are, to the last, uplifting, lyrically pleasing, and keeping with Christmas tradition while giving the listener something totally new for the holiday.
Although each and all of the 6 original songs is lovely in its own right, you particularly don't want to miss:

"This Christmas"
In this song that he co-wrote with brother Jim and Mac McAnally, Mayer features one of the truly special things about the contemporary Christmas customs -- giving. The song is about making a difference, and giving of yourself to others.

"Stars and Promises"

Mayer pens and plays a samba here, starting with the 8 bars so familiar from the old song "Love Was Meant for Me and You"...the familiarity of the 8 bars intrigues you and the rest of the song draws you in. It's a great departure from traditional Christmas music, and a song that will stay with you.

I'm just starting to discover Mayer's music, but am thankful for finding his Christmas CD in time to enjoy it for the holidays. For a truly peaceful, enjoyable experience, in the hands of a skilled songwriter, try "Stars and Promises". Or buy it for next year, and start your holiday season off the right way.

Excellent music by a very talented individual, and group. Strongly recommend to any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a way to spend the Holidays. . . .......2005-01-24

I saw Peter Mayer in concert in December. What a rare gift he has and how lucky we are that he and his brother Jim are sharing their faith with the rest of us.

I purchased STARS AND PROMISES at the Tulsa show and have just about worn it out. It's January 24, and I'm still listening to it. Have purchased two copies for friends, too.

I love all the cuts, but STARS AND PROMISES is my favorite. Who woulda thought of a Christmas Bossa Nova? It's fabulous.

I had 'lost' Christmas until this year. Seeing Peter and listening to this CD has brought it back to me.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas CD for the whole year.......2001-12-05

The first thing you notice about this CD is the quality of the musicianship. The opening track is an instrumental suite blending a few holiday standards, which run the gamut from amazing Peter Mayer acoustic guitar work to haunting melodies on a Native American wooden flute. There's a lot of that influence on this album, and even a middle Eastern tone or two.
The Little Drummer Boy even features a spectacular percussion "jam" on African djembe drums.

Peter's original songs on here really shine as well. There's a hint of the sound of his other solo albums, but the songs are definitely distinctive. Catchy pop melodies underly these songs, and they're all stylistically different. The title cut, "Stars and Promises", evokes a cheesy 60's love duet complete with a "Girl from Impanema" sound with Peter and Tina Gullickson doing great vocal work.

It's a great album that can be listened to all year long.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-12-17

I own everyone of Peter Mayer's CD's and this one along with all the others is great. Peter just amazes me more and more with each new album. This Christmas CD is very soothing and would be great to listen to after a long day. His guitar work is wonderful. This Cd is a must have for any fan!!!

    Album Description

"Stars & Promises Alive" is a follow-up from Mayer's first Christmas album entitled, "Stars and Promises." "Stars & Promises Alive" was recorded live at one of the immensely popular Peter Mayer Christmas concerts of the same name, in Nashville, TN.

This album includes four new original songs: "The Story of Christmas," "Harmony" (which was co-written and performed as a duet with acclaimed songwriter Mac McAnally), "Hey Joseph," and "This Town"; as well as some of the favorites from the original "Stars and Promises" CD. "Stars & Promises Alive" also includes fresh renditions of "Little Drummer Boy," "Angels We Have Heard On High/Carol of the Bells," and "Silent Night."

As with the "Stars and Promises" CD, Mayer adds Native American wood flute, percussion from around the world, and a strings section to his distinctive acoustic guitar performance. The enthusiastic applause heard between songs lets listeners embrace how electrifying the live Christmas performances are.

Included in the CD liner notes is the following message: "When I told friends I was recording a Live Christmas Concert in September, one joked, 'So what's next, a 4th of July celebration in January?' It was a little crazy to be looking for Christmas trees, decking the halls and rehearsing Christmas tunes out of season, but the Spirit of Christmas defies the norm, breaks the 'rules,' and awakens us in unexpected ways. At 8pm, September 6th, in the Martha Rivers Ingram Hall at Vanderbilt University, among musicians, technicians, video crew, sound crew, and an audience full of friends and fans willing to ring out the bells a little early, we were carried into Christmas: A Star to guide us, a song to remind us, the promises of Christmas were here, alive for any season."
