The early-'80s Trapezoid line-up (Freyda Epstein, Ralph Gordon, Paul Reisler, and Lorraine Duisit) applied tightly arranged harmonies and rhythms to Appalachian instruments and motifs with such precision and beauty that they became the best American example of the chamber-folk genre. Singer/fiddler Epstein and bassist Gordon have now formed a new trio with guitarist Bob Vasile called Freyda & Acoustic AttaTude, and Midnight at Cabell Hall goes a long way toward capturing that old Trapezoid sound. The album was recorded live (though without an audience) at the University of Virginia's Old Cabell Hall with the "Stereo Microphone Technique," which tapes the room sound rather than the sound coming right off the instruments. This approach provides a warmer, richer sound and captures this trio's highly attuned rapport. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars don't even ponder -- buy it........2007-07-07

i have owned thousands of lps, cassettes, and cds. this is one of the top 5, certainly, probably a tossup for the single best. i'm also a recording engineer, and this is The most acoustically perfect recording ever made in the folk genre; not just my opinion, it is widely held in this regard.

Freyda was a Brilliant fiddler as well as one of the most astounding female voices on the planet (along with Lena Willemark of Sweden). The songs are beautifully chosen, moving pieces that feature jaw-dropping instrumental work as well, on fiddle, guitar, octave mandolin and bass; i've been a touring musician and play 3 of those instruments, and know whereof i speak.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous recording-all acoustic!.......1999-10-29

Really great single stereo microphone recording.

5 out of 5 stars What a heartbreaker!.......1998-11-02

A jaw-dropping, heartachingly great album. The performances are heartfelt and direct, Freyda Epsteins's smoky voice couldn't possibly be more beautiful, and the recording quality is nothing less than stellar. It's such a wonderful disc that I don't quite know what to say about it. The only clunker (and it's a killer) is the tune sung by one of the men (I forgot the name).
