Product Description
Society today is run ragged. A premium is placed on production with little value accorded reflection. Yet it wasn't until Jacob slowed down and rested that God visited him. This is a collection of meditative/prayerful songs that call us to slow down and seek intimacy with the Father.

This collection of Krysztof Penderecki's music encompasses one of New Music's most intense, even extreme pieces: Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima. Played in the extreme registers by 52 string performers, this piece came off in every way as a careening lamentation. Decrying the bombing of Hiroshima at a time when it was still a historical blue ribbon on the war chest of the U.S., Threnody was unforgettable for its vast ranges of sound colors, from the quietest and most brittle to the most raging, swirling bruises imaginable. UNESCO officially selected the composition as one of the finest works of 1961, emblazoning Penderecki's name and the composition's flagrant intensity around the musical globe. The remaining pieces on the CD make this a stunning collection, much of it having functioned as the musical background for The Shining. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Derivative but thoroughly enjoyable.......2007-05-29
Although Penderecki has done very little that could be considered wholly original (most of his work borrows liberally from contemporaries such as Xenakis and Boulez), his oeuvre is still notable for a number of extremely inventive compositions that are possessed of the focus and intensity of their subject matter.
The celebrated, popular "Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima" is one fine example of such a composition. "Threnody" employs emotive and imitative techniques in shattering registers to deliver a sonic equivalent of the horror experienced by the victims of America's most egregious and destructive war crimes. Penderecki's first mature political statement is as effective as it is unbearably loud.
To note that the remainder of this disc's music is lighter fare is to type in a strictly relative context. But so many people seem to disregard the humor and levity of Penderecki's music, focusing only on the "horrific" aspects of his sonic palette. To be sure, Kubrick implemented key extracts from "Anaklasis," "De Natura Sonoris No. 1" and "The Dream Of Jacob" (among other works by Bartok and Ligeti) in the soundtrack for his film adaptation of "The Shining," but the placement of these selections indicate as much an emphasis of a certain sly wit as they do of a blunt, morbid effect.
My personal favorite track from this album is an excellent premiere recording of "The Dream Of Jacob." Although this was composed of a distinctly Catholic sensibility, its' effect isn't dulled in the slightest even when divorced from the myth of a Hebrew patriarch's sacred vision. This must be the one of the most profound, terrifying compositions that I've heard. But its' effect is due in part to relative simplicity - despite the inherent atonality of all of his early popular compositions, Penderecki's popularity is directly related to the accessibility of his work.
After expressing a petulant ignorance of the intention in which "Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima" was composed, an earlier disgruntled reviewer still typed a harsh but fair truth: "Penderecki is the Strauss of the avant-garde, a popularizer of advanced techniques that were developed by real geniuses to express the inexpressible." This much can't be denied; Penderecki's music is built from the influence of far greater minds. But this should not suggest that his product is without merit. To the contrary, Krzysztof Penderecki has composed a handful of enduring - albeit derivative - classics that will likely stand the test of time. This much can't be said of most music that is so atonal in any way or to any degree.
The sound of this disc is excellent. I don't know what I find more impressive: the quality of the original mid-'70s recordings or the excellent remastering that they were subjected to. These recordings sound as clear and brilliant as they possibly could.
The popularity of this disc is obviously related to the fact that no soundtrack album for "The Shining" was ever released. However, it's worth buying simply because there are no available recordings of the compositions on this disc that can rival these. To be certain, Penderecki's interaction with both the PROC and the LSO exhibits a considerable talent as a conductor.
One led to the other.......2007-05-19
In the liner notes, the composer is quoted in regard to Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima "the problem of the great Apocalypse (Auschwitz), that great war crime, has undoubtedly been in my subconscious mind since the war when, as a child, I saw the destruction of the ghetto in my small native town of Debiça". Nazi Germany was responsible for that destruction, not to mention Auschwitz, and although Imperial Japan took no direct part in those atrocities, they were allied with Germany during the war. So the bombing of Hiroshima, in some way, was connected to the atrocity the young Penderecki witnessed. Thus, through this association, the Threnody becomes a lament for all victims of war. At least, I think that's what the composer intended. Perhaps this is a work where title and comments can only detract from its effectiveness. Standing on its own as a pure cry of horror, Threnody has few equals.
Horror in Every Aspect of the Word.......2007-05-11
Dear fellow music lovers, be careful with the 'items' of this disc. I am not sure what accurately to call them; I would not want to use the word 'music', as music to me is this lovely, divine force or language that through structure, harmony, melody and thematics enhances one's life. In Penderecki's items, none of these parameters are to be found. What he has composed is indeed something that generates sound; sound can be found everywhere around us; sound is, however, definitely not the same as music.
I have to credit Mr Penderecki for giving us the collection of alarm-emulating sounds constituting the Hiroshima Threnody. I would imagine these horror sounds quite appropriately to represent the situation prevalent in Hiroshima during the awful nuclear blasting. Experiencing these sounds indeed has some value; other than that I cannot really identify anything to pay for on this disc. Creating various sounds, or even noises as they often turn out to be, can be done by anyone; creating great music, on the other hand, certainly cannot be done by anyone--and unfortunately not by Penderecki.
The second star goes to EMI's sound production, which is amazing considering it was done more than 30 years ago--superior to the vast majority of productions from this source done afterwards. As such, it is more than well in the demonstration bracket. Having said that, be careful demonstrating your hi-fi equipment using this disc, as your friends may indeed expect it to convey music--not horror sounds.
Horror has never been so clearly expressed..........2005-06-22
I am not usually a fan of so-called "avant-garde" music. Though this may fit into that category, everything that Penderecki does seems to be used as a form of expression. What is he trying to express? Horror.
The very beginning of "Threnody" makes one flinch. I remember turning up the volume quite loud when listening to this, and upon doing so, I was in for quite a surprise. I had never heard music quite like this before. "Threnody" starts with a high, shrill note in the violins, and the rest join in. By the time this section is over, just about anything else that follows seems tame.
What amazed me was, although the work was brutally dissonant at times, there was a beauty in the dissonances. The jarring harmonies all seemed to fit in place. They made sense, though they might have been painful to listen to.
The capriccio was fascinating. The violinist was quite good, both technically and expressively. This piece is quite difficult to describe. The term "capriccio" makes one think that it is supposed to be humorous in some way... and in a sense it is, but in a way that is almost terrifying.
The Canticum Canticorum Salomonis was beautiful and haunting. The voices, like spirits, surround you, crying, gasping, whispering, and moaning. At times there seem to be tonal influences, though they are rare. Overall, this is probably my favorite track on the CD.
I would definitely recommend this CD, even to those without much experience with atonal music, if they are willing to give it a try. It really is beautiful, though the beauty can only be found when one realizes that this music is not supposed to be "pretty", it isn't supposed to be tonal, and it IS supposed to contain strong dissonances. That is how it gets its point across, and in that sense, Penderecki knew what he was doing.
Perfect expression of horror and despair.......2005-05-03
If there's ever been a more perfect expression of the emotions of horror, despair, chaos, violence...etc. put on disc than "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" then I certainly don't know about it.
Yet for all it's dissonance and atonality I found myself drawn to it, and even listened to it several times. This is not background music for a tea party with finger sandwiches, in fact it sounds like fodder for horror movie soundstracks.
Yet the music is so well done; conceptualized and actualized that it's compelling and I find, actually, very listenable.
This goes for the other pieces on the recording, which add to and complement each other very well.

Customer Reviews:
More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04
I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!
Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.
Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.
Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.
Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.
Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.
A Great First CD.......2000-06-22
After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.
The sublime collection.......2000-06-18
I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.
Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.
This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.
This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.
Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28
This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2002-10-19
Before hearing this album, which I found by chance in my local library, I had never heard of Lutz Kirchof. He is a wonderful player who makes these recordings nearly 500 years old sound refreshingly modern and passionate! Listen, particulary to tracks 16 and 19 from the Milleran Manuscript, and you can visualize what people of that day were dancing to.
divine.......1999-01-01
This album is ideal for anyone into early music, or really anyone at all. Lute music is perfect for relaxing. If you don't have this album, you should definitely get it. For a trivial amount of money, you will receive hours of happiness.

Fantastisc!!!!.......2006-05-13
what a great cd! i like osmand's voice the best. Though, i like keli rebke's voice better than janet metz. Still, it's a great cd. And i have a qestion. Does any one has pictures of this show?
Donny Osmondan as Joseph.......2006-01-20
fun Musical- great costuming- I should know I did this musical in Children's Theatre when I was in the sixth grade-Believe me Donny Osmondan has great vocal range- he's excellent as joseph, However when we did it (with my now elederly mother as the stage manger!!) the guy who played Jospeh Adam ( sixteen at the time) well, let's just say at the point I had a huge embrassing cursh on him that I still to this day never told anyone about (except my mom on one ocssain) what A hunk!!
Wonderful.......2005-02-15
This recording is wonderful! The musical's score is beautiful and is also performed beautifully on this recording! A must have for any Webber, Rice, Osmond, or Joseph fan.
Any Dream Will Do!.......2000-01-16
I saw this show 3 times with Donny and recently saw it twice with a different "Joseph"--there is no comparison. Donny brings feeling to the songs that no one else could. Duets with the narrator gave me the chills. His voice is as clear in person as it is on the CD.
My 6 year old and I sing all the songs and my 1 year old dances along. Listen to the words--it's very funny. If you are a dreamer and want a fun, magical musical that everyone can enjoy--this is the CD for you.
Great Music.......1999-10-01
This version of the soundtrack is great. I have heard other versions, and none of them hold up to this one. Donny Osmond brings a certain something to the show, and "Close Every Door" shows off his range. I think anyone would enjoy this cd.

Album Description
Society today is run ragged. A premium is placed on production with little value accorded reflection. Yet it wasn't until Jacob slowed down and rested that God visited him. This is a collection of meditative/prayerful songs that call us to slow down and seek intimacy with the Father.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite album.......2006-09-19
I cannot describe how much I love this album, and how much it speaks to me, especially the title song, "Jacob's Dream." With rhythm and music that moves you, and lyrics that must be inspired by God Himself, it's hard to find a comparable CD.
"I have given Jacob's generation the key of David, intimacy to open up the doorway to the nations, and release revelation, of intimacy, with me."
Excellent.......2005-04-26
This cd would be aptly considered a cd for "contemplative prayer" times. The cruxt of Jason's message is the same as that of the mystics: growing in love and union with God. That's what comes through on this cd. It is gentle, soothing, but the message contained in it is enough to change your perspective on things.
I'm not lifting Jason up as a man. The strength of his music lies not in great ability (though he has it), the strength is in being honest with God.
awesome.......2004-09-21
I absolutely love this cd. It is so deep. You can hear Jason's love for God through his worship. It is a very powerful cd. I've said it in my other reviews for Jason Upton, but he is so passionate with his music. The lyrics are very powerful and real. I love it. I recommend this to anyone.
Another Brilliant Worship Mix!.......2003-11-25
This CD is very anointed. I love it and highly recommend it. Jason Upton invites you to join him before the throne to worship the King.
Psalm 23, is one of my favorite songs. There is such power in singing/ praying the Word of God. It is so beautiful.
Wait Upon the wind is a song for everyone. The revelation that we are to wait upon the Lord in all aspects of our lives.
Jason received the song "Teach Me How To Pray" when praying for Indonesia; it is a powerful testimony to the power of prayer and the reality of the sacrifice that Christians are living in other parts of the world.
I recommend this CD to anyone looking for profound and passionate worship. Enjoy!

Ready for war.......2006-05-12
This is so much more focused than the self titled release. It rocks from end to end. I dare anyone to listen to Theater of War right after listening to the self titled release and tell me that there is anything lacking on theater of war. The only drawbacks (if you could call it that) i hear is the flat and dry production, little depth or seperation. Very in your face.
The self titled cd was very eclectic and open to the listeners interpreations where as this cd just rips you head off and hands it to you!
Waste of time.......2004-10-13
This album sounds so much like Queensryche that I wonder why they even recorded it. If you read other comments you'll hear the Maiden/Ryche/Fates comparison many times, I totally agree. Why bother with imitations when you can always listen to the originals.
Another band self destructs.......2003-06-28
This album was such a letdown after the awesome self-titled album from 2000 (which I give 4 stars). That album had an intensity and cohesiveness that really grabbed you from the first song until almost the end, where a little bit of filler could be found. This album in contrast seems to have been a rush job, the songs don't jell into anything you might remember and there aren't many grooves that hook into you. The music in general is harder than the first album, but the guitar work is less interesting and the drumming is at times laughable - some of the fills sound like they're right out of Spinal Tap.
My suspicion falls on the absence on Rick Map, who was the drummer and producer of the first album. This album has a new drummer and is producted by "Jacobs dream", which is usually a sign of a band in trouble because there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
Interestingly enough, the last couple of songs on the album seem to pick up a little bit, which is unusual since that's where most albums tend to lose steam. Maybe these were songs made before Map left and the band just stuck them on the end to finish up the recording.
Save your money, but the first album and move on.

My Scale:
* Weak, maybe 1 or two good songs, lots of filler
** OK, throw it in the car or MP3 player for long trips
*** Good, several excellent songs, still needs some work
**** Excellent, a classic that I will listen to for years to come.
***** Awesome. The entire world will be talking about this album for the next 10 years.
More solid Iron Maiden/Queensryche influenced power metal........2002-06-16
Jacobs Dream's self-titled debut (from 2000) was an excellent American power metal release that effectively combined various aspects of Fates Warning, Iron Maiden and Queensryche. All right, I'll admit that mixing Maiden, `Ryche and Fates Warning is kind of like mixing a golden retriever, a Labrador retriever and a Chesapeake Bay retriever: In the end, you still end up with a retriever. While merging influences from the aforementioned bands isn't exactly groundbreaking, with Jacobs Dream you still get a good band (even though this formula doesn't work for all bands). Some detractors would say that originality isn't Jacobs Dream's strongest attribute and to a degree, I concede that point. In the end, however, who cares how Jacobs Dream arrived at their sound? An album-any album--should be judged by the songs, not by who the band sounds like. Jacobs Dream write great songs and that's what counts most.
"Sanctuary" (which ranks a nine out of ten) is a fierce rocker with excellent vocal melodies, especially the chorus. The vigorous "Theater of War" (ranks a seven out of ten) shows the bands ability to change pace quickly as the song moves from slow to fast to slow again. "Traces of Grace" (another nine) is a compelling, swiftly moving song with an almost Metallica-like opening and brawny riffs. Showcasing more muscular riffs "Wisdom" (an eight out of ten) is another tune that swiftly changes pace. "The Warning" (a seven) moves briskly with a tough riff that carries the song throughout. Track six, "Sarah Williams" (ten out of ten), is a powerful ballad that tells the story of a young lady who was killed by a drunk driver and it's told through the apologetic drunk's point of view which makes this song an emotional powerhouse. "De Machina Est Deo" (ranking a nine) is an instrumental that recalls many European power metal bands along with Metallica as it moves fast and furiously. "Black Souls"(a seven) is aggressive, fast and brutal but lacks engaging vocal melodies. Finally "Critical Mass" (another seven) is heavy and aggressive but like "Black Souls" it suffers from the lack of strong melodies.
Vocalist David Taylor sounds like a cross between Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and Queensryche's Geoff Tate with maybe a bit of Geddy Lee thrown in (apparently, some think this combination a bad thing-go figure) . The vocal melodies remind me of Queensryche and Fates Warning while the music is reminiscent of Queensryche, Iron Maiden and even Metallica (the Metallica similarities aren't major). I may be drawing upon too many comparisons, but this is my attempt to give the listener a good idea of what the band sounds like. My constant comparisons to Iron Maiden and Queensryche are probably a bit overboard and I need to point out that Jacobs Dream does clearly have their own style. To sum up, I really like this album. The strong song writing and the engaging performances make this CD as strong as Jacobs Dream's debut.
enjoyable album.......2002-04-13
Each song is well crafted and well executed, resulting in a very musically adept and soncially powerful album.
