True american classics.......2007-02-17
I got this CD for all the Sousa on it. It is said to have 13 of sousa's greatest marches, but marches like National fencibles, Corcoran Cadets and Sound Off are hardly known at all. However, this CD is great. It also has Morton Gould compositions, and my favourite non-sousa composition- Goldman's Chimes of liberty. Two Goldman marches are new to me- Jubilee and Happy Go Lucky, and I like them a lot. One Sousa march is new to me- On Parade, which is one of Sousa's few circus marches. The problem about this CD is the fact that the recordings have parts taken out, so the pieces aren't as exciting, but the quality and dynamics are good, so I wholy recommend it anyway.
In the "Top 5" of best band recordings ever. . ........2007-01-27
I am a classical music person, and orchestra is my chosen medium; however, back in the 1960s I heard a recording of Morton Gould conducting his symphonic band, and was blown away by the precision, arrangements, and super sound of the LP version of this disk. Now it is out in RCA's new hybrid CD, re-mastered, and spectacular. The power of this band is superb; its members are obviously pick-up musicians of the highest caliber (I doubt if this band was together for an extended period). Of particular note is Gould's original piece "Jericho", a 12-minute depiction of the famous biblical battle. When the trumpets get cranked up to blow those walls down, you will hear one of the most spectacular feats of brass playing ever recorded, and you had better warn the neighbors before the window-rattling sound of the walls coming down blows the speakers off your stereo. Gould's other arrangements are also top-notch; the 2'43" "Dixie", for instance, is among the cleverest ever put to disc. If you dig band music, this sleeper of a CD will astound you!

Customer Reviews:
A brilliant rock album.......2005-01-25
"High July" is no "Jet," but it's darn close, hence the five stars. Keineg's voice has matured, as have her compositions. This is an amazing album!
"Shaking the Disease" is already my favorite song of 2005--no questions asked. It's a political rock anthem that deserves top-40 play, not that it will ever get it.
A Wonderful Bridge for her two proper CDs.......2004-12-28
I just (finally) received my copy of 'High July'. I love it as I knew I would. The songs seem to pull ideas from both her two proper Elektra releases but in a more refined and cohesive way.
'...End of Time' showcases her powerful pop chops with beautiful and very strong results.
'On Yer Way' is very delicate and beautiful and leads to a bit of a rousing ending but never bombastic.
'Captain' & 'Shaking The Disease' are the songs reminiscent of Jet that had muscle to them.
'Brother of the Brush' & 'Seven League Boots' recall O Seasons with all their beauty and wit.
Sadly, Katell is one of the highest underrated singer/songwriters of the present day. Her voice is always stunning and pitch perfect. Her lyrics are challenging yet literate and direct. Her music is always unpredictable and beautiful and always works within the context of the song.
I can't recommend this enough - or anything by her for that matter. Call me biased but at least consider this an honest review. Not because I love it - but because others should as well.
(for a swell summation of Katell's career so far - seek out 'The Battle of the Trees'. All the proof is in that song.)
Stellar Album!.......2004-12-21
I have been a fan of Katell Keineg's for years. Without a doubt, she is one of the finest singer/songwriters working today - cunning lyrics with crunchy and haunting melodies. High July is a superb album. Some songs, such as What's the Only Things Worse than the End of Time? and Shaking the Disease are instant catchy,alterna-pop gems and are accessible upon the first listen. Captain (Steal this Riff) is a wonderful song, full of life. On Yer Way is an interesting mix of gorgeous harmonies and uncharted eruptions of electric guitar. And then, as with all of Katell's albums, there are pieces that challenge the listener - those with meandering melodies and introspective lyrics. Little Joe grows on you as you listen and then there is Seven League Boots - one of the finest tuba tunes I've ever heard, just fun. However, the crown jewel of this album is Te Recuerdo Victor Jara - a song filled with wails and whispers that will put you in a trance and haunt you again and again and again... Let's hope that Katell is able to serve up more of her work sooner than later!
A welcome return.......2004-11-29
I love Katell Keineg. Since discovering her marvelous album, Jet, years ago I've bought all her other work. I have enough faith in her to buy her albums as soon as they are available without first hearing any clips or reading any reviews, and she has yet to disappoint. Her new release, High July, has been highly anticipated for more than a year and it's worth the wait.
As usual there are a range of styles. The album follows an up and down pattern of upbeat and slow tracks for the first 5 songs. The energy of "What's the Only Thing Worse Than the End of Time?" is followed by the loose meditation of "High Marks." I can see how people can complain that it's meandering. To me it's a very open and evocative song, moving like water. "Shaking the Disease" is a bit like a more sophisticated version of "Franklin" (from O Seasons O Castles) or Jet's "One Hell of a Life." "Beautiful Day" fits as well here as it does on the What's the Only Thing Worse Than the End of Time ep. The sixth song "Captain" remains upbeat with a riff you certainly will want to steal. It's a distinctive mix of pop and art that Katell has carved out, and I love it.
That said, I must admit I've never been completely satisfied with any of her albums. There always seems to be a song or two that leaves me a bit puzzled, that never quite work for me. This is less so on High July, but here those songs finish out the album, which heightens the fact that I like them a little less.
"Little Joe" is spare, haunting, and achingly beautiful. But I think it's also a song that works differently depending on your mood; on the first few listens I found the first 2:29 irritating. "Brother of the Brush," a song narrated by the painter Paul Gauguin, is a quirky, countryish delight. And although I'm always happy to hear less-often-used instruments like the tuba and the accordion in popular music, I agree that "Seven League Boots" is the weakest track. It goes for a jaunty quirkiness and has rousing sing-along choruses which I rather enjoy. It's well-paired with "Brother of the Brush" but still seems a bit out of place on the album. "Te Recuerdo Victor Jara" is very quiet and though it's beautiful, I wish in a way that she had ended the album with something you didn't have to listen so intently to.
But whatever quibbles I have are pretty minor. Overall I think the first half of the album is more accessible than the second half, but it's all well worth listening to. I just hope we won't have to wait so long for the next album.
disappointing, at best.......2004-11-02
I wanted to really love this album. I'm a huge fan of Katell's, having seen her a number of times. "O Seasons" and "Jet" are two of my favorite albums of all time.
If you've seen her at all live over the past few years or bought the "The Only Thing Worse..." EP, there will be no surprises on this ablum.
There are a few songs which are really great, such as "The Only Thing Worse...", "Beautiful Day", and "Brother of the Brush". However, most of the other songs are meandering and boring, especially "7 League Boots".
Overall, this album lacks a polish that was present on her other albums. The mixing is off by quite a bit. When listening to the album, some of the tracks get lost due to their low volume if you're listening in the car, for example.
I can't wait for her next album.

Customer Reviews:
Nostalgic and absolutely wonderful !.......2003-10-11
It was quite a while before I was able finally to get my hands on this CD. I have both the out of print long playing record and cassette, but was determined to add this Living Stereo CD to my collection. What stands out about Morton Gould's presentations of the splendid marches--especially those by Sousa--is his refusal to engage in the kind of excessive showmanship that so many others have resorted to in an effort to stir the soul. He just lets Sousa speak naturally, and that means eloquently. As good as Frederick Fennell is in his fabled Mercury recordings--and he is considered by many to have been about the best of all march conductors except, perhaps, Sousa himself--I still derive the most comfort and satisfaction from Gould with these recordings, and I know why. As a young boy in 1952, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the motion picture, Stars and Stripes Forever, the story of--you guessed it, John Philip, who was portrayed by the inimitable Clifton Webb. Those marvelous marches of Sousa left an indelible mark in my musical consciousness. In the next several days, I proceeded to watch that movie ten more times. In the years that followed, I saw it ten MORE times. To this day, I remember fairly well the style in which those tunes were played. Gould comes closer than anyone else I have ever heard in approximating the sound of Sousa in that movie I fell in love with 51 years ago. Of course, it was more than just the movie. Sousa's music has been a source of lifelong inspiration. It never ceases to refresh and uplift me...I believe this disc is no longer in print. If you are interested you'll have to search those vendors who deal through Amazon. That's how I acquired my copy.
Marvellous! One can wish for no more!.......1999-03-16
Despite having been recorded in the 1950s, this disc's selections are sonically just fine -- almost as good as they are musically. Morton Gould was a remarkable musician, one of the best America has produced. He wrote a great deal of excellent music and he put together fine performances. For this recording, Gould obviously assembled the finest brass and woodwind players in New York. The result is stunning. Marches by Sousa are finer works than one often thinks. Here they are played with, brilliance, precision and attention to details of dynamics and tempo rarely heard. The inclusion of four superb and more modern sounding marches by Edwin Franko Goldman, and several marches composed by Morton Gould himself make this an album that should not be missed. It would be a bargain at twice the price.
