Editorial Reviews
The Label
The album that renewed Hawaii's interest in ethnic Hawaiian music. Legendary Hawaiian slack-key guitar master and vocalist Gabby Pahinui joins his sons, Bla, Martin, Philip and Cyril for the first time on record. The album was instrumental in beginning a resurgence in native Hawaiian music upon it's release in 1972. Hawaiian music at it's very best. Beautiful slack-key guitar and vocal arrangements.

Fruit is Sweet - Indeed! Worth the wait........2007-06-29
A pleasant suprise from Luscious Jackson co-founder Gabby. Those familiar with the LJ sound can finally & justly attribute to Ms. Glaser most the quirky funky soulfulness of the LJ sound! In this album I hear a faithful yet fresh emulation of the 1970's. (For the stylistically opposite, check out Jill Cunniff's fine City Beach)
My hat's off to Gabby & friends- for successfully evoking that sublime aural sensation of placing a new 45 on my tiny record player, pulling-apart the speakers, and then drifting upstream.
Gabby plays a very mean axe, without for an instant sounding like a guy. Her songwriting hits you at the gut level, and the production is spare, clean, and beautiful.
Check Ian Love's great slide work. In "Your Eyes," I heard a bit of Steve Howe..
Innaresting about who is and isn't in the Special Thanks. Ever photogenic, Gabb appears on the back cover splendidly.

Hilarity Unleashed!.......2004-03-31
My daughter bought me this album because she saw the "Four Bitchin' Babes" in concert and loved their music. I've been a "babehead" since first hearing the album. All four can sing, no question about it, and I like their serious music, but their humor is effervescent. From the song "Dyslexic," with its commentary on the inability to understand basic language ("praying to my DOG"), to "L.A.F.F (Ladies Against Fanny Floss)," with its searing satire on aging and ever skimpier bikinis, the album is an antidote for the blues. Gordon Lightfoot might even enjoy "The Nervous Wreck of Edna Fitzgerald," about a family boating excursion that could not have been worse (we've all been there, if not on a boat at least on an automobile trip). "My Father" and "Intertwined" are lovely ballads, serious though they are, about relationships.
The songs are eloquent and witty, the music stunning, and the humor contagious. The style of the album is folk rock, and its live with interchanges between the Bitchin Babes and the audience. Enjoy.
Musical Hilarity.......2002-02-19
Musically, this album is quite lovely--but you can get lovely music buying these ladies' individual works. Better is the absolute hilarity of their songs, ESPECIALLY the ones written live onstage in response to strange lines provided by the audience. My favorite is "Breakfast Dishes." I would definitely buy this CD again. It's a great relief from teenage schlock and 20-something angst. I recommend it highly for anyone mature enough to have stretch marks, children, or a minivan.
Excellent!!.......2000-08-08
Just saw the Babes at the Birchmere (8/5/00). This album was recorded live at the Birchmere and is one of their best! Enjoy!
WOW. The Babes pull off another great CD........2000-01-01
Reasons to buy this CD: 1) You love a great balad ("My Father," "Intertwined," "Wild Berries"); 2) You appreciate comedy with your lyrics ("Dyslexic," "Cyberspace," "Ladies Against Fanny Floss"). Don't loan this CD out to friends--it doesn't come back.
Simply outstanding.......1999-11-27
For those not familiar the Bitchin Babes is an ensemble group of four fabulous woman "folk" singers. (I use the quotes because this is not your traditional Peter, Paul, and Mary folk group.) These women are redefining the genre.
Each woman takes the lead on one song while the others sing backup.
This CD has you almost in tears one moment only to have you with a stomache ache from laughing so much the next moment.......I've seen these women several times in person and this cd captures the essence of their live performances....... Meaghan's version of Patsy Cline's "Crazy" is priceless. Certainly she has the best pure voice of the four. Each has their own style, but, all are great, and their harmony is outstanding, just check the a capella song "Breakfast Dishes" by Sally Fingerett.
If you're wondering what folk music is all about in 1999 pick up this cd. Not only will you will enjoy it but you will wonder why you've stayed away from folk music so long.

Well produced, but kinda scary.......2006-03-31
The good news is that this is NOT a canned record label product. We have enough of that from Disney and that Kidz Bop crap. The bad news is that this album presents the exact opposite problem. It's just plain old weird. My daughter was physically scared by this album. Gabby is obviously talented, but her voice is somewhat eerie. Les Claypool's arrangements are excellent and the music is really well produced, but I wouldn't classify this as a kids album. Perhaps world? Scary world? Is that a genre? Anyway, my suggestion for Gabby is that she should embark on a dance album AKA Bjork since this is obviously the school she comes from. If you combine the world elements with her weird voice and add some dance beats, I am sure her fan base would expand.
Here's my advice to all "kids" artists...Kids like to listen to great, groovy music. Kids, like other human beings, want to have fun. This album is anything but that, more a muse-o foray into oblivion.
A little strange and ecclectic but otherwise excellent..........2006-03-13
I bought this album because I am a huge Primus/Claypool fan and after listening to the samples my kids loved it. Gabby La La's vocals sound sort of like Glinda the Good Witch fromthe Wizard of Oz. But if you can get by this or even like music that is a little off, then you need to check this out. All the instruments are played by La La and Claypool, and this really turned out to be quite a spectacle. If you like your music a little experimental, then I highly recommend this disk.
Not just a lucky charm.......2006-02-19
It's actually a bit deceptive to call Gabby La La a pop singer. It usually makes you think of Britney, Ashlee or Hilary.
But Gabby is about as different from those as a golden glea is from a fortune cookie. With her quirky songwriting (chasing down leprechauns? Eating mermaid?), catchy songs, and the most unusual singing voice I've heard in a very long time.
It starts off with a pair of almost painfully catchy songs: "Be Careful What You Wish For" and "Backpack" ("Gotta keep track of me backpack!") with their tales of genies, mermaids and Roman tourism. It's almost impossible not to hear these simple, bouncy little infectious tunes without bouncing in your seat.
Then she twists her own catchy songs around. Rather than staying on the same track, she switches to some songs flavoured with Indian sitar, sparkling accordion pop, bouncy French-folk-flavoured music, and swirling indie balladry. There's even a grittier, darker song about "Pirates," with plenty of stark guitar to keep it grounded. By far, it's the most "ordinary" song on the album.
And Gabby La La also keeps the songwriting... well, not ordinary. I wouldn't go so far as to call it weird, since I've heard much weirder. But it's quirky, and the focuses are usually pretty far from "I love my boyfriend" or "he left me and I'm miserable." Golden fleas that chew fool's gold, genies, aged leprechauns, Hansel and Gretel, Santa's elves, and the "boogie woogie man in a black dress." There's even a song devoted to fortune cookies.
Yes, it sounds terribly twee. And here and there, it is. But Gabby La La gives it a slightly sick twist in places ("I found a mermaid swimming next to me/Then she offered me a single wish/I said I'd like to have you in my dish!"), and sometimes she gets even quirkier ("Boogie woogie man in a black dress/state your name and state your business!").
The topper to all this weirdness is Gabby La La's own voice -- she sounds like a fairy on speed, especially in the faster songs. It may sound weird at first, but it grows on you. She provides about half the instrumentation here -- usually sitar, ukelele and accordion -- while Les Claypool provides the more conventional pop instrumentation like drums and bass.
If you like the idea of a song that says, "Little fortune cookie, I'd like to smash you!", then Gabby La La's quirky, wacky debut is for you. Delightful.
Be careful what you wish for and BLAST OFF.......2005-11-14
Countdown and
music, projected by the
ancestors, activated from the same recycled
Tao that floated the
golf ball of nevermind.
Unwrapped and unwound,
ukuleled and sitared,
Tachy-Vivace-Feather-Tickle-Falsetto-Fugues
projected as a single helix of vitality, I
escape set and setting, escape insatiable
creation, yet anchored
by downy injections
of ponytailed polytonalities,
drunken goose flesh flits off Saturn's ornaments
between bowing Buddha's smoked
ghoudas, until
no landing no collision, but silken,
rapelling Rapunzel's pubes
like a pool in a tub, like a tool in a pub,
like the blissful
blind bluster of young
passion's meandering musk. If, if,
if
If this music is real, if I can maintain, then I have been betrayed by everything I've ever called love.
a fun trip outside of 'the box'.......2005-07-31
Gabby La La is one of those rare musicians who is so far outside of any musical box that the listener will either love or hate her. Gabby is eclectic, eccentric, exotic, whimsical, animated, and original. She plays a dizzying array of instruments including the sitar, toy piano, accordion, ukulele and electric butterfly guitar. This Petaluman's sitar work is surprisingly proficient and shines on 'Golden Flea' and 'In and Out of Dreaming,' a moody pop raga. La La's child friendly themes include backpacks, elves, pirates, chickens and the boogie man. The strongest tracks include 'Backpack,' 'Butter and Eggs,' and 'Pirates.' While La La's freshman debut lacks the call & response and jokes that bring so much charm to her live solo performance, it is compensated with Claypool's production that flushes out the rich potential of this material. It is not surprising that Gabby is the only other artist on Les Claypool's label, since when it comes to music, she may be his female counterpart. While it may take time to aquire an appreciation for Gabby La La, "Be Careful What You Wish For" is well worth the effort for such a fun trip.

I must admit I didn't know of this performer; but found my way to him from a discography of Ry Cooder. I will usually buy anything that Ry has a hand in. Both hands preferably.
The music from the Hawaiian Islands has always enchanted me; and this CD was a whole lot more than I thought it would be. Ry Cooder playing with him; was why I came to the CD. However now I have purchased 2 Cd's by the great Gabby Pahinui and am a fan.

Maika'i no keia!!!.......2005-02-08
Pop's "Brown Album" is the perfect introduction for the non-Hawaiian music fan or Hawaiian music fan alike. In addition to this, the album is THE preeminent introduction to kika kiho'alu. He died too soon, but left we Hawaiians with many things, chief among them an identity.
Just Plain Outstanding.......2002-12-29
I first heard Gabby on a trip to Hawaii 25 years ago. Truly, he is one of THE masters of his genre. His music is very soulful. If you are looking to experiment with traditional Hawaiian music (NOT lounge music), pick one of Gabby's CDs...its the real thing.
No ka oi! One of THE most important Hawaiian albums ever.......2001-11-07
In the early 70's, Hawaiian records were powerful. Not only was the impact felt in Hawai'i, but among many transplanted Hawaiians who would come home and bring this back to California, Oregon, or Washington. Gabby had already had years of recordings behind him when this album was released in 1971 (in fact the album begins with a brief snippet of his rendition of "Hi'ilawe" taken off of a 78 rpm recording he did in the 40's). While musicians in other genres would have been comfortable in his legacy, Gabby was far from over. Like many of his albums from the 70's, he unites sons and friends for an hour of great music. The playing on this is top notch, and while Pahinui wasn't the perfect singer, he sang like a bluesman and you can feel it in "Hame Pila". It was this version of "Hi'ilawe" that made it a mandatory part of every hula halau, beer party, and baby shower in the 70's. Even as I think of how "Hi'ilawe" segues into "Aloha 'Oe", where Pahinui plays one of the most mournful slide guitar solos ever heard, it makes me want to cry. This is as beautiful as it gets, and there are only two words you can say once he reaches those final notes at the end: hana hou! Known by many simply as "The Brown Album".
Gabby the Great.......2000-12-19
I have been listening to Hawaiian music since my stay there in 1978. At that time I had been an afficionado of jazz, blues, classical and owned an extensive collection of "old time country" music and bluegrass. In the old time country category I own an extensive collection of old western swing music, such as Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. When I heard Gabby Pahinui and the Sons of Hawaii in Maui in '78 I instantly recognized a similar feeling to that of Bob Wills - an easy pedestrian beat with lots of character and commentary. Gabby Pahinui's music remains a constant source of pleasure and enjoyment 22 years later. That's a solid sogn of excellent music - it stands the test of time.
Sergeant Pepper of Hawaiian recordings.......2000-08-27
In one word, a masterpiece. Along with the first albums of Olomana and Kalapana, Peter Moon's "Tropical Storm," "The Extraordinary Kui Lee," and the Makaha Sons' "Hoola," This album has to be one of the top 10 collections ever produced by a Hawaiian artist. Very little music produced by today's so-called Hawaiian artists reaches the depth of the "Brown Album." It is a benchmark and a landmark that transcends the fact that only three words on the entire album "Royal Hawaiian Hotel" are sung in English, besides the understatement "That was good" after one track.

'Til Now - Thank you Gabby!.......2003-07-23
I have been looking for a collection of Gabby's songs for years, and this one has some of my favorite Gabby songs. I first heard Bridgetown in Barbados and loved it! Soom of these songs are old friends: Bridgetown, Jack, Boots, and the extremely moving Emmerton. All these songs were based on events from Gabby's life. Hit It, Cadavers, The List, West Indian Polititian, Gisela, Debra, Chicken and Ram, Pow Pow, and Dr. Cassandra were new to me and very enjoyable and so very Gabby! Unfortunately, the album just makes me want more of his work, those not on this album! Let's have more Gabby!
Great Album!.......2002-10-24
Gabby is undoubtedly one of the greatest, but also unfortunately perhaps one of the most overlooked, calypsonians of this era. His collection of songs spans the entire range within the soca/calypso genre - from social commentary to political satire to humor to plain "jump up soca" - Gabby has it all.
Such impressive variety is surpassed only possibly by the depth of the composition and the clarity of the rendition.
This album is fantastic. The selections adequately incorporates all of the elements alluded to above. I highly recommend this album to everyone - from the serious calypso connoisseur to the person seeking an introduction to the style, range and tempo of the calypso artform.
I only wish it had a couple more of his songs. Nevertheless, as it is, it's great!

This is an excellent compilation of some of Gabby's greatest hits. It really gives you a great appreciation of this man's outstanding talent in all aspects of being a great calypsonian. (singer, writer etc.). He is and always will be my favorite artists of this century.
