Product Description
One of (if not the) great lost folk-rock records of the '60s. Eclection was composed of bassist Trevor Lucas and drummer Gerry Conway, later of Fairport Convention; lead songwriter Georg Hultgreen, later of Sailor; guitarist Michael Rosen and lead vocalist Kerrilee Male; together they made, well, eclectic music, reminiscent at times of the Mamas & Papas and even early Airplane. Nevertheless, the album sunk like a stone, but it remains highly-prized among '60s collectors; it resurfaces here for the first time in 30 years with quotes from Conway in the notes as well. An obscure but highly worthy Collectors' Choice Music exclusive!

5 out of 5 stars Typical of its day!.......2007-02-14

Actually saw this band live in '68, after an aborted attempt to travel Sth for a festival at Woburn Abbey(UK)which featured Hendrix, Floyd, Family etc! Returning back to Manchester in time to see them at The Magic Village & blew us apart! Eased our sorrowfull souls! Very professional, mixture of European & American muso's from memory? One of John Peels faves! Bought their record shortly after. Another classic from the Elektra label. Psych/pop vein.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2006-12-12

I really can not add a lot to the reviews of others here. This is Classic California 60's sound, but with other elements mixed in. Early Airplane and Fairport comparisons are great, but I think you can also add in a bit of progressive with hints of the Moody Blues and others of that era. This is a top notch recording for the era. Sound and production is excellent. Now if only the album Genesis: In the Beginning form the American band with the same name as the band from Britian, would come out on CD. It was another lost vinyl jewel.

5 out of 5 stars A Found Treasure.......2006-02-05

I bought the vinyl version of this album years ago in a bargain bin. Best bargain I ever got; it still sounds fresh unlike so many other 60's folk-rock and "psychedelic" groups. It's almost impossible to pigeonhole. For starters, the female singer, Kerrilee Male, has a gorgeous, piercing voice that will stay in your head long after the music stops. The songs themselves are incredibly melodic but so very different from one another; credit this to the songwriting talents of Georg Hultgreen (better known today as Georg Kajanus of Sailor)and Michael Rosen. The late Trevor Lucas, one-time member of Fairport Convention (and husband of Sandy Denny) was in this group and sings lead on one song. "Eclectic" is a very appropriate description, and the only real problem is that this is their one and only album release. Listen to the samples and buy the disc. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a lot of other groups from their era.......2005-08-25

I just got the Eclection CD today, a used copy, and as soon as I heard the first few tunes I knew that I was listening to a very great overlooked group from the late 60's. I also agree with all the other reviewers comments that the group does sound very similar to early Jefferson Airplane, and Kerrilee Male's vocals sound very similar to Signe Anderson's. They do have a Fairport Convention connection and sound as well, but that's because Trevor Lucas was once in Fairport Convention. I like all the songs on this album, even the guys singing on some of the tracks sound very good, and the musicianship is excellent as well. I would highly recommend this to anybody that likes British Folk-rock, or any folk-rock music for that matter. They actually sound more "American" than British, and in fact, only had one member in the group that was British! This CD was recommened to me by a friend that I correspond with back in New York, and I'm glad I got this CD, it's outstanding, and if you like and collect this type of music, buy it, you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars --.......2003-09-10

Although the name of the group was intended to represent a convergence of styles and the various backgrounds and nationalities of the musicians, I think it does a disservice to the sound they made. When you hear the name 'Eclection' and find out they were a British folk-rock group with a female singer, you think, "Oh, so they're like Pentangle." Don't make this mistake.

Upon hearing the record you'll immediately recognize that this is a group concentrating on one sound, and that sound is not very similar to Pentangle's, though it does travel some of the same territory as Fairport Convention's first two albums. However, Eclection's record is more polished sound-wise than those Fairport albums with its prominent orchestration and better singers.

Eclection's sound is very full, open and still fresh-sounding. It's more progressive than the standard folk-rock sound with a slight sense of menace underlying several songs. Kerrilee Male's voice is indeed similar to Signe Anderson's from Jefferson Airplane's debut album, but not to that of Grace Slick's work. The male (not Male) singers are also accomplished, though slightly raw, but this is not to their detriment for they convey an honesty and integrity that some more technically-sound singers fail to achieve, and one must remember that folk music is at the core of Eclection's sound.

Highlights of the album are 'In Her Mind', 'St. Georg & the Dragon' and 'Nevertheless,' which is reminiscent of Fairport Convention's non-LP track 'Shattering Live Experience'. The only drawbacks are the way some of the songs can run together anonymously in terms of tempo and mood and the drumming can be a bit stiff.

This record is a solid buy, and you don't need to worry about it sounding dated because it doesn't.
