About the Artist
Dean Shostak has been been performing early American fiddle music since 1979 for Colonial Williamsburg. He earned his BA in Music from the University of Virginia and has performed as a soloist throughout the United States. He has been featured on All Things Considered, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and Good Morning TV on the BBC. Beside the violin, Dean also performs and records music with the glass armonica, invented by Benjamin Franklin.

A real toe-tapper!.......2003-08-13

An eminently listenable recording, and you'll probably find yourself humming some of the tunes hours later! For those specifically interested in early-19th-century music, Shostak and company have come up with a nice selection of pieces that would have been played in Crockett's time, if not by Crockett himself (with the obvious exception of the 1954 Ballad of Davy Crockett from the TV show, thrown in at the very end after a 19-century piece by the same name). The star of the show, of course, is the fiddle, which supposedly belonged to Crockett and has been lovingly restored to playing condition, accompanied by other instruments (piano, guitar) that are reproductions of 19-century originals. The printed insert has some interesting notes about the individual songs and the instruments used on the recording, along with appropriate snippets from Davy Crockett's autobiography. The musicians play with skill and obvious enthusiasm, and one certainly doesn't need to be a 19th-century music enthusiast to enjoy listening to this one!
