This is a great CD for all festive occasions. The Pogues are a timeless band and this is a great CD if you are new to these amazing Irish Rockers.

Those beer hall singers and prodigal sons of Ireland have been most excellently packaged into what is indeed an "Ultimate Collection," not only of their greatest hits but of a live performance at Brixton Academy. The songs travel far and wide, with hints of Zydeco, Bluegrass, as well as homages to the old country with the gruff voice of Shane MacGowan. Some called this Anglo-Irish band Celtic Punk, others Celtic Fusion, but whatever you want to call their inimitable style of music, it is just plain fun. The band has been around since 1982, originally known as Pogue Mahone. If you know a little bit of Gaelic, you will figure it out. There is plenty to draw from in this collection. For those new to the Pogues this is the best place to start.

If there is little or no Pogues in your collection, and there most certainly should be, this could be a great place to start, as disc one gathers all their most influential material; the singles, key album tracks and even a B-side (The Repeal Of The Licensing Laws), while the soul of the band is laid bare on the second disc, the previously unreleased reunion concert that took place over two legendary nights at the Brixton Academy on the lead up to Christmas 2001, with Shane MacGowan back with the band for nearly all the lead vocals (so far as I can tell Spider Stacy takes the lead on Tuesday Morning, Terry Woods sings Young Ned of The Hill, Phil Chevron sings his own Thousands Are Sailing and Lila MacMahon guests with Shane on a rousing Fairytale Of New York), and the band themselves, augmented by the Fiesta Horns, on excellent, sometimes riotous form.

The only obvious omission that I can see is their first single, Dark Streets Of London; however as this is on Red Roses For Me, which you will doubtless be acquiring shortly after playing disc one, this is not a great problem. It would have been an idea, though, to have included the original single as this differed from the album version and is hard to find.

A few notes about which versions have been used where more than one exists: Rainy Night In Soho is the remix that first appeared on the CD release of the Poguetry In Motion EP (the original vinyl mix seems to be unavailable on CD). The Irish Rover, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and A Pair Of Brown Eyes are all the remixed single edits; The Boys From The County Hell is the cleaned-up single version. Only Rainy Night In Soho is duplicated on the expanded editions of the parent albums.

Can't really say what hasn't been said previously and say it better, so in short, yeah, the best of is pretty much a toss off if you have all of the albums or one of the many best ofs available in import and domestic formats. The real treat here is the live reunion disc, squashing the inferior, band-disowned _Streams of Whiskey_ like the corn that went into many a bottle of Jameson's that's gone down MacGowan's throat. And when Shane goes off for a break (read: drink), you get Spider Stacy's beautiful post-Shane "Tuesday Morning." Buy it and listen to it 'til we see El Maria once again.

This is a fabulous offering. The compilation cd is a good place to start if you are new to their music but the real gem is the live cd contained in this package which brings all the atmosphere of their shows straight back. I worked front-stage at some of their gigs in Leeds (UK) in the eighties.If you remember them from then, this is an essential cd for you. The frenzied music,the heat coming off the crushed audience and the stench of sweat.Shane barely able to stand as he drinks and drinks and growls out his wonderful songs.The front rows of the audience 'Shane Shane - give us a drink !!'singing their hearts out to every tune.Most of the classics are on the live cd. 'Rainy night in Soho','Streams of Whiskey' and 'If..' stand out for me.Play it loud and have your spirits lifted every time you hear it.Absolutely brilliant.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

The Seekers were an Australian group that achieved massive success in both the UK and the USA in the middle sixties with their wonderful blend of soaring harmonies and acoustic but full-bodied instrumentation. This 2-disc set contains 50 of their greatest hits and most popular album tracks.

Written by Paul Simon, the song Someday One Day was one of the Seekers' very first commercial successes in Britain. Their unique folk sound is characterized by a strong female vocal and gripping acoustic blend, including prominent 12-string guitar.

I'll Never Find Another You was a number one in Britain and also reached the top 5 in the USA. World Of Our Own, Georgy Girl and Morningtown Ride likewise did well on both sides of the Atlantic, while my favourite, the soulful Carnival Is Over, was another UK number one.

Besides their familiar hits, this collection also includes great covers of both traditional and original 1960s compositions like Blowin' In The Wind, We Shall Not Be Moved, Whisky In The Jar (remember Thin Lizzy's later interpretation?), Danny Boy, The Last Thing On My Mind and Kumbaya.

Although considered a folk band, their sound has a very distinctive pop edge, beautiful tunes and exquisite vocals. They were not at all like Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention, in the sense that they had more in common with the Mersey sound and didn't use any of that Olde English imagery.

The next decade The New Seekers sought to revive the success of The Seekers, but in my opinion they never achieved a sound as timeless and engaging as the originals. This extensive compilation album will appeal to all who love melodic songs, exceptional vocals and rousing acoustic instrumentation.

An exceptionally well-sequenced collection. I usually don't like BEST OF discs that scramble chronology, but the people who put this together did a great job; the different styles of production keep this interesting all the way through. In this context, I can even appreciate his poppy early work. Excellent sound. And it's got most of the songs from "Harold and Maude"! Ignore the cover and GET THIS (used).

For the die-hard Cat Stevens fan who wants to hear the 'very best of Cat Stevens' I'd say buy every CD he made. For the peripherally interested, this is the album to get, in my opinion. Not only does it contain a large portion of his most favoured period [Tillerman/Teaser] but it also contains a bit from all his periods. This is Cat Stevens in a nutshell. It includes at least one song from every album. My favourites are Moonshadow, Land of freelove adn goodbye and Into white.

Cat Stevens is another artist I grew up as a teenager. His music speaks to the human soul. I almost forgotten about his contribution "If you want to sing out, sing out" to the film classic "Harold and Maude". It was like reacquainting myself with an old friend. Songs like "Father and Song" and "Morning Has Broken" moves me in a way no other artist can. I consider his version of "Another Saturday Night" far superior to the original by Al Green. Obviously this collection of Cat Stevens songs has four extra tracks that his greatest hits cd doesn't have. For anyone interested in buying a compilation of Cat Stevens songs, this ultimate collection is the way to go.

For those who don't know his work, this is a great CD with all his major hits, a Collection of songs that reveal all sorts of emotions, from happiness to sorrow. For those who do know his work, this is just another CD with his most famous titles. I already knew his work, but i liked it.

Any collection of Steve Wariner's hits that does not include the song "Why Goodbye" should not be considered "ultimate" by any stretch of the imagination. I was working as a progressive country music DJ when this soung was released back in the 80s, and from that day to this,I consider it to be one of the catchiest and most melodic and memorable country/pop songs ever written and performed. This collection showcases Steve's more country oriented side, which really sells him short. "Why Goodbye" should be at the top of everyone's list of all-time favorite Steve Wariner songs, and I just don't understand why is has been virtually forgotten. It also just mey be the best vocal performance of his career.

This collection contains Steve's hits from the periods in his career - RCA in the early 1980's, MCA in the mid 1980's to early 1990's, and 1990's Arista. It does not contain his late 1990's stint at Capitol but considering how many hits Steve has had you have to stop somewhere. Steve is definately one of the very best pop-flavored male country vocalists of them all, kind of a latterday Jim Reeves. This album contains many number ones and I believe most of them went top ten. So if you like 80's and 90's country music, a great singer and great songs, Steve Wariner is your guy and this is your CD.

I have really enjoyed Harry Belafonte's Cd! As a kid, we always played these songs at gatherings and party's. I have not owned a recent copy of these old favorites and I was thrilled to be able to order the CD and have it arrive in time for my family gathering of 80 people! Us 12 kids, husbands, wives and all the nieces and nephews thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing to our old favorites. Thanks, Amazon for making our party an even bigger success! The sound and quality of the CD are great!

Ultimate Collection with Harry Belafonte is an amazing collection from a true crooner of calypso and island folk music. He has an amazing vocal ability and the lyrics for his tracks are quite well done and never sound forced or phony. It is true that most of the tracks are not written by Belafonte himself. However, still takes nothing from this collection of amazing island and calypso tracks such as Banana boat, Mary's boy child and many other nice tracks that are amazing to listen to and if one has a decent vocal abilities (like I do) then they are fun to sing as well. The book-let looks cheap but the photo is nice and shows Belafonte looking suave. This is a great summer album whilst drinking some gin and tonic.

Album Description

His songs are among the most familiar in country music, yet he hasn't even recorded some of them. He counts bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs and novelist Kurt Vonnegut among his friends. He has been the most unusual singer-songwriter...one who didn't recycle himself after the first album. He married folk music's narrative drive to country music's melodicism and economy. And when Alan Jackson took his song "Little Bitty" to the top of the country charts in 1996, it proved that it's always a little premature to write off Tom T. Hall.

Country music began with narrative ballads, but no one has stretched the medium or used it as a vehicle to say something trenchant about the human condition like Tom T. Hall. If most country songwriters look inward, he looks outward with ironic detachment. He was raised on traditional bluegrass music, and still says that it's his favorite music, but bluegrass is rife with judgmentalism. Tom T. Hall's music is almost entirely free of judgments. He relates the story, leaving you to draw what conclusion you will.

Tom T. Hall is a one of a kind song writer. Nobody can write songs as well as Tom T. Hall. The first song I ever heard him sing was "I Love". I instantly fell in love with this song and when I hear it today it sounds as good as it did back then. He tells of everything he loves in this song. "Country Is' is another country classic that I never get tired of listening to. Other standouts are "I Like Beer", "Fox On The Run", "Faster Horses", The ballad "I Care", "Old Dogs, Children And Watermellon Wine", and the classic "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died". Many people do not know that he wrote "Harper Valley P.T.A.". There aren't many more song writers like Tom T. Hall anymore. Every song he writes is always different than the last he wrote. If you like good old country music then get this CD in your collection.

He's known as the poet laureate of country music. He's written songs for himself, and for others. One bein' "Harper Valley P.T.A.," Billie Jo Spears, (who was not as popular in the US. as she was in England.) But ya may have recognized the more popularized version by Jeannie C. Riley, in 1968. Tom T. has also done songs such as, "Ballad Of Forty Dollars," "A Week In A County Jail," "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died." Ya also might remember hearin', "Old Dogs, Children And Watermelon Wine," "I Love," (little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow movin' trains and rain.) Or maybe, "I Like Beer," and "Faster Horses (The Cowboy And The Poet.") Whatever ya remember about Tom T. Hall, remember that "Country Is," this CD and Tom T. Hall.

The Thinking Man's country music song-writer, Tom T. Hall was no more "just a country music composer" than Mark Twain was "just a country writer." As a gifted lyricist, Hall continued the great, Mark Twain story-telling tradition -- teasing us endlessly with humorous and astute observations of human frailties -- distilling it down into `artless' treasures of the song writer's art.

As with the greatest, non-theatrical lyricist of them all -- fellow southerner Johnny Mercer - Tom T. Hall's best work, such as the opening track of this terrific compilation -- the "Ballad of Forty Dollars" it's all so deceptively simple! "Heck, I could have written that!" Lyric writing never looked so easy and fun.

If it's still true that the world will always welcome lovers as time goes by --- it feels equally good about great storytellers, who can go anywhere and are never strangers --- especially those who touch our hearts through poems set to music.

The reader must indulge this frustrated poet for one minute as he closes his eyes to recite, (from 'memory imperfect') five short stanzas of lyric writing perfection.

As Frank Sinatra said of Fred Astaire's dancing in "That's Entertainment"): "You can wait around forever but you may never (experience) the likes of this again."

This is a great compilation of Tom T. Hall hits (and others). I'm especially grateful for his That's How I Got To Memphis (NOT ON HERE) that Bobby Bare did so well. And WHERE'S "SHOESHINE MAN"!? Well, we'll have to look on "Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher" and "Greatest Hits, #2". Tom just wrote and sung these great songs; he didn't PACKAGE them. But this is the place to start. Save your money and you can get the other almost complete compilations later; many of these great songs will be on those CDs too. See how that works? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Tom wrote and recorded songs that told stories - little vignettes of everyday life. Other country singers did this too, but only as a part of what they did. For Tom, story songs were what mattered. You want typical love songs? Look elsewhere. Yes, Tom sometimes sang about love but, like everything else, he told it in a story.

This collection includes all his country top ten hits plus his own recording of Harper Valley PTA, a song that he wrote but which became a huge international hit for Jeannie C Riley. Her version, which sold over four million copies, topped the American charts but didn't quite make the top ten in the UK.

Among Tom's classics here are Old dogs children and watermelon wine (my favorite), Faster horses, I like beer, Ballad of forty dollars, I love, Country is, That song is driving me crazy and The year that Clayton Delaney died.

Conspicuous by their absence are Sneaky snake and One hundred children. They may not have reached the country top ten but they are among his best songs and certainly better known than some of the songs that are included here. Still, I've yet to see a compilation that includes all Tom's classic songs. Other compilations that include those two miss out other classics - and that includes the double CD boxed set, which (as I said in my review of it) could so easily have been a triple CD with no drop in quality. Dedicated fans can at least get all the classics by buying different compilations, though that means a lot of duplication. If you are such a fan, you may be better to start with the box, then add Greatest hits 2 and one of the RCA compilations, then see what else you want.

If you only want one CD of Tom's music, this is the one to buy despite the absence of two classics. If you enjoy it as much as I do, you can always buy more of his music another time.

My first reaction to learning about this CD was mixed: "What -- ANOTHER Seekers anthology?" and "Hmmmmm . . . maybe this is the one I really, REALLY need."

So when I opened up the jewel case and started reading the liner notes, I had a good laugh. The writer, journalist Graham Simpson, obviously anticipated my mild skepticism. He starts out with, "Now it's not as if the world has been starved for choice when it comes to collections of Seekers tracks. So why another one?"

Simpson then proceeds to answer his own question. Admittedly, he makes a strong case for The Ultimate Collection; both his observations and track annotation are top-flight. But what has convinced me even more that I made a wise purchase is the quality of the remastering and the song selection. The Seekers themselves -- Athol Guy, Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and the incomparable Judith Durham -- helped choose the 26 songs for this compilation. The songs run the gamut from their early recordings at Australia's W&G Studios through their EMI (Capitol, stateside) classics such as "I'll Never Find Another You" and "Georgy Girl", their reunion years, and even a stunning version of an early Bee Gees hit, "Massachusetts," which they have lovingly dedicated to the late Maurice Gibb. (Simpson provides a great story about that song's history, forever linking the Bee Gees to the Seekers beyond their Australian ties.)

The sound quality (remastering) of this disc is superior to that of two other, same-titled Seekers CD collections I own -- The Very Best Of The Seekers (on the Collectables label) and The Very Best Of The Seekers on the EMI/MFP (Music For Pleasure) label. Now, there is a catch: Each of those two earlier anthologies contains tracks not found on this new one (and vice versa). The former CD includes "Red Rubber Ball" (cowritten by Woodley and Paul Simon), which was a Top 40 hit for the Cyrkle in 1966, and a rare Potger-penned song, "All I Can Remember"; the latter CD features such chestnuts as "Danny Boy," "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Water Is Wide." But it's impossible for any single disc to contain every song the group has ever recorded, so I don't want to completely discount those two earlier anthologies. I'm holding on to them. (Besides, the Collectables entry has excellent liner notes by Dawn Eden and track annotations by Ron Furmanek, whose name has graced several CDs I own.)

Still, this new anthology, The Ultimate Collection, is arguably the best of the "best ofs." Its liner notes and annotation are well-written (despite leaving you wanting more), the remastering is superb, and the song selection cannot be faulted. If you don't own any Seekers CDs, then get this one. If want an upgrade from your old vinyl records or "so-so sounding" CDs, then get this one. If you're a completist, then . . . you've already ordered this one. I listen to everyone from Aerosmith to the "killer B's" (Beach Boys, Beatles, Byrds); Buddy Guy and Lonnie Mack to Patsy Cline and Dwight Yoakam; Bob Marley to Aretha Franklin to Miles Davis. Gospel, zydeco, rockabilly, you name it. Yet despite (or perhaps because of) my eclectic tastes in music, there remains a special place in my heart for the Seekers. That's because my favorite instrument is the human voice. And the singing -- especially those soaring harmonies -- that these four gifted people have given us since the 1960s will always be essential listening for me. If you do get The Ultimate Collection, do yourself a favor: Don't listen to it through the headphones. Crank up your stereo and let your speakers fill the room with the quartet's glorious voices and solid musicianship.

Melanie is the consumate artist - writing brilliant lyrics and then delivering them in an utterly unique voice. She deserves a much wider contemporary audience and I hope a whole new generation of listeners will enjoy this fantastic performer. It is worth buying the album just to hear "Pebbles in the Sand". Buy the album and enjoy it over and over again. Buy Melanie's "Moments of my Life" and enjoy her soulful interpretations of some of the greatest songs of all time. Oh and by the way, her album Photograph is the best money I've spent
