Nearly 25 years after their last album together (1982's A Taste of Yesterday's Wine), the Possum and the Hag reunite... with a twist. This time, they sing each other's songs. The conceit can be dangerous unless you're playing it for laughs, e.g., Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley on the former's 1960 television special. But though Jones puts more emotion into interpreting Haggard's songs than Hag reciprocates, these two old legends manage to pull it off. And with the help of producer Keith Stegall (Alan Jackson), they keep the music solid, too, spotlighting steel guitar great Norm Hamlet and celebrated piano sideman Pigg Robbins, who played on many of their original recordings. Jones particularly shines on "The Way I Am," and Haggard proves sublime on "I Always Get Lucky with You." Where the album really lights up, however, is on the duo's pocketful of duets, starting with a poignant and intensely resonant rendition of Haggard's classic aging-musician ballad, "Footlights." Surprisingly, the repertoire never seems tired, and there's a surprise around every corner: Rhonda Vincent adding splendid harmonies on Haggard's new "Born to the Blues" and Jones turning transcendent on a confessional line about being "crazy and lonely." Just as these ragged masters take their leave, they put a little more Western in Duke Ellington's swing ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore"), filling in the middle with a warm, nostalgic banter that reminds listeners just how much these two have seen and done. Who knew hard-luck autobiography could sound so exquisite? --Alanna Nash
Album Description
On this disc the two country music icons take turns singing the other's hit songs. On four songs they team up on duets. The end result is an historic recording enhanced with stellar production by Keith Stegall and an all-star band.

im suprised ........2007-06-21
as i heard this album i was taken back . For in recent yrs jones voice has sounded like he has a renewed spark . LIKE A DANCER with a new step. i seen him in concert last yr and oh my he sounded wonderful . and never missed a note . just awesomwe . And merle on the other hand has lost a step . BUT WITH THAT BEING SAID merle missing a step is still better then most artist on tour now on thier best day . WITH only 4 people with many yrs under thier belts still doing what they do so well left touring . JONES .MERLE .WILLIE . AND HANK JR . i WAS thinking MERLE CANT DO GEORGE JONES songs .As no one can sing jones songs . AS WAYLON SANG .(WRONG ) YES I ADMIT i was wrong . merle was great on this outing . george on the other hand was very good . So the one i thought would be the stronger of the two was not . Now im not saying mr jones was lost on this album . But merle was the merle of old . But jones can sing anything so he got away with being different on this album .Like getting in the ring with a great fighter known for his right hook . SO YOU WATCH out for that right hook . and get knocked out with the left . HOPE they tour together this yr.

Sometimes two mixing two great talents togeter dilutes the result. Not in this case. Here, 1+1 is very much more than 2. Quite simply this is brilliant, blissful stuff. Outstanding.
Outstanding idea, well executed!!.......2007-01-19
One of my favorite albums ever. I've already bought several more as gifts!
Velvet Voices.......2007-01-18
I LOVE this CD. Merle's voice is pure velvet and George Jones is totally himself - the rich deep voice of yesterday. They make a great team. I hope they do another one!

There when I needed it........2006-02-25
My mother was dying in a hospice. We needed some music to play for her while she was there. Two of her favorite hymns were on the one cd. It was hard to find that. Amazon came through with the selection, and overnited it to me. My mother passed 2 days later. I'll always be grateful for that cd.
Hymns.......2005-07-28
Tennessee Ernie Ford was a very popular singer when I was a child and my parents and siblings loved to watch his TV show. He would always end the show with a hymn and I wanted to revisit those songs and the happy days of my youth. The Hymns and Ernie are as good as ever.
Magnificent.......2004-11-23
I bought this CD specifically for the song "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" which is hard to find on a CD. This hymn was written in 1830 by Ray Palmer (lyrics) and put to music later by Lowell Mason, a man Palmer met on the streets of Boston. Mason took home the lyric, wrote a melody, and a few days later found Palmer and told him no matter what Palmer did for the rest of his life, he would be remembered for the hymn.
Another gem here is "Just As I Am Without One Plea." This is the amazing story of Charlotte Elliot. This bedridden, sick woman was feeling sorry she could not help her pastor with his fundraising for charity as she was simply too sick. After writing this hymn in 1835, she was shocked to find copies of it being sold by the thousands. The proceeds were given to the very charity Charlotte thought she could not help. After she died in 1871, others found stacks of letters sent to her from all over the world, thanking her for changing their lives and bringing them to Christ.
These are not the only two historical hymns in collection.
This is not just a CD of the great hymns of our time. This CD is a living history of hymns going far back in time.
It is a treasure.
I am thankful I got a chance to see Tennessee Ernie Ford when he appeared on TV during his glory years.
Simply Perfect.......2003-10-29
The 1st CD of Mr. Ford's that I purchased was entitled Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns -- a year later and I still frequently pop that magnificent collection of hymns into the drive. I HAD to have more -- so I purchased 2 other Ernie hymn CDs (including this one) -- and these certainly do not disappoint. While these CDs are comprised of age-old favorite hymns, Mr. Ford's unique, flawless bass voice gives them added life. Blend Mr. Ford's pure, non-pretentious bass voice with a judicious mixture of crisp alto's and tenor's, as some of the selections do, and you are presented with truly, magnificent works of art that seem to never get old. Just drop the CD into the drive, sit back, relax, and let Mr. Ford sing you back home with this soothing collection of favorite hymns.
Give me that old time religion!.......2003-05-10
I set out to find a CD that contained the old hymns that I loved as a child, which have now seemed to have disappeared from the churches in my area. But, I also wanted hymns that I could sing along with. Well, with this CD I hit pay dirt!
This CD is a compilation of twenty-two of Tennessee Ernie Ford's (1919-91) most requested hymns. Sung with Ford's wonderful voice, the hymns are great to listen to. And more, I found that I could happily sing along with all but a couple which were sung a little to idiosyncratically for me (What a Friend We Have in Jesus is one, sadly).
So, if you want to hear some of those wonderful old hymns again, then I can't recommend this CD enough. I have it in the CD player in my car, and it is not coming out soon!

Leadbelly wasn't exactly the Raffi of the Roosevelt era. Convicted of attempted murder and murder, the man born Huddie Leadbelly on January 20, 1888, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, began forging a career as a performer in the 1930s after his discovery by John and Alan Lomax. By then he'd developed an enormous repertoire as well deft vocal and instrumental skills. Despite his sordid past, Leadbelly won over adults and children alike; this generous 28-song collection demonstrates the source of his pied-piper appeal. While the master of the 12-string guitar drew upon traditional kid fare ("Skip to My Lou," "Blue-Tailed Fly"), he recognized that plenty of goodies from his adult bag of songs appealed to tykes, too. Consequently, blues, work songs, and prison numbers turn up in this gratifying collection, which consists of a 1960-released children's LP in its entirety, plus selections from two other records and a previously unreleased radio track. --Steven Stolder
Album Description
This new collection features delightful songs for young children as well as the work songs, blues, and spirituals Lead Belly used to teach children about the experiences and emotions of adult life. Originally reocrded in children's concerts and studios for asch and Folkways records in the 1940s, the 28 songs and spoken introductions reveal the humor, humanity, and musical genius of one of the great artists of the twentieth century. Essential listening for all ages. Produced by Moses Asch. Reissue compiled and annotated by Jeff Place.
Customer Reviews:
The Blues Master Of The Twelve String Guitar!!!.......2005-10-28
Not only was Huddie Ledbetter a geat Blues songwriter he was also the King Of The Twelve String Guitar which made him unique among his contemporaries. Anybody who has tried to play a 12 string guitar knws it takes a lot of strength and muscle . This album contains some fine and unforgettable tracks such as 'Good Morning Blues", "Irene Goodnight", "Rock Island Line" and "Midnight Special" which was inspired by his time in Prison. The story behind this song is that if a train's light shone on a Prisoner then he would soon be released. The greatness of this artist can be seen by the many cover versions of his songs which were released by many well known artists such as Johnny Cash and John Fogarty. It is interesting to note just where Huddie got the nickname "Leadbelly". I have heard it was given to him by a prostitute who admired his Sexual Prowess or another version where he was shot in the stomache but thankfully survived. Or perhaps it was just a misspelling of his surname. This guy was and is a Blues Legend.
A brilliant album for all ages.......2003-02-16
In many ways, this album is an oddity. First, it is a blues album. The blues are supposed to be about sadness and hard times, yet this a remarkably upbeat album, Second, it is a children's album, except that it may be better appreciated by adults. I have not played this album to children, so I can't say what today's children will make of this album.
There are some traditional children's songs here, including Skip to my Lou, Grey goose and Blue-tailed fly (Jimmy crack corn), but there are other songs which you are more likely to find on standard albums, including Swing low sweet chariot, Rock Island line, Cotton fields, John Henry and Midnight special.
The songs here are sequenced such that all the genuine children's songs are at the front. After all of those come the blues and spirituals. Then come the work songs. Finally, you get some of Leadbelly's best-known songs. This last category confuses things slightly. After all, Cotton fields (included in the work songs) and Pick a bale of cotton (included in the famous songs) fit both categories. If anything, Cotton fields is the more famous of the two. Still, the order in which the songs appear is really not that important, although it was wise to put the real children's songs up front.
I have several children's albums, all carefully selected. This one definitely appeals to adults and serves as a great introduction to Leadbelly's music.
An album to all of the family!!.......2001-09-08
I'm a bluesfan and have a daughter at age of 11,and since she was a baby the blues was ever a sound listened in my home. So,she likes the blues, and when i 've brought this Leadbelly album, she becomed so interested in that kind of music and it touched me inside.I've explained her all of the history of blues, specially in the person of Leadbelly, his own history too,the hard days at Angola prison, his lyrics asking for liberty, the poverty of that days, and specially the capacity of that suffered man to change all of his own life, when he decided to do what he really knows better, just to play and to sing. Then i could explain her that the man can changes the reality, just with some educative activities, and the music ,is one of that.
So, i really recomends this album for all of the families,as a good way to start new relations between all of this families members! We must believe in the capacity to change our lives with good intentions and with actions to reach all we want.
The cover art of this cd reveals the envolvement between an experienced bluesman, and that younger audience, linked by just the great music that echoes from Leadbelly guitar!
This is a historical set of musics for adults and childrens everywhere. To the family!
pure gold--if your tastes run this way.......2001-08-30
I resolved to have them play Jimmy Crack Corn at my funeral--it might be the only way I can every get anyone to listen to this tune. It's sublime.
Leadbelly is ineffable. If you have only heard his blues, I don't think you've really heard the whole man. You must buy this record!
Singing and talking to kids brings out his incredible sweetness. No wonder he got those governers to spring him from prison!
rockin' the cradle.......2001-01-20
The songs on this CD are delightful. Not being an educator nor a parent, I won't speculate on the efficacy of this CD for young people. I know that I like it, and it brings a smile to my face as I listen to Mr. Ledbetter. Even the song about a menacing bug, BOLLWEEVIL, is fun the way he plays it. The PIG LATIN SONG is so ridiculous and childlike, I just have to laugh. I enjoy the standards by Mr Ledbetter, also, GOOD MORNING BLUES, ROCK ISLAND LINE and COTTON FIELDS. Mr Jeff Place writes a comprehenseive set of notes which explains a great deal about this great man's life. "Through Alan Lomax, he met people like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Aunt Molly Jackson, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Josh White, and all of the musicians he encountered were influenced by Lead Belly's music." As an introduction to the song WHEN A MAN'S A LONG WAY FROM HOME, Mr Place writes, "Lead Belly clearly thought that children could be introduced to the feeling of the blues," The Columnist Walter Winchel wrote, "How could anyone make a children's record with a convicted murderer?" Smithsonian Folkways did, and I am glad of that. If you are interested in the songs of Mr Huddie LedBetter (1888-1949) or if you are interested in delightful Folk Tunes from the US, this CD will be interesting to you.

Willie.......2006-03-10
What a combination--Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson!!!
Product well packaged and received in a timely manner. Very good condition.
Beautiful songs, horrible sound quality but it can be fixed.......2006-03-06
As said before, the first songs of this CD are almost okay, regarding the quality of the sound, but from the third or fourth song on, it starts to get muffled and no high frequencies. I love all the songs, specially tracks 7 and 8 and so I ripped them and using Sound Forge, forcing equalization for the higher frequencies, three passes, I was able to recover the trebles and I can say that the result is quite good. Basically, the most important frequency was around 7KHz, that I boosted more than 20db, but that was not all. Now, I can listen to the songs with a very acceptable masterization. I can here the cymbals! I wonder what the guys that have the recorded tracks could do with today equipment, if I, with just a PC and a good audio application, was able to make it sound so much better. Time for an official remastering!
By the way, this CD would deserve five stars if the sound quality was better.
Thanks Willie & Kris........2005-11-19
A Very Good Album, With Two Of My Favorites. Sounds VERY Good..
Good Interpretations of Great Songs.......2005-01-14
Throughout his career Willie has had great success doing both his own material as well as interpreting the cream of other songwriters efforts. And no doubt about it, when Willie does a song the interpretation may be many things, but it will certainly be unique. Such is the case here. He takes the absolute best songs of Kristofferson's catalog (through 1979) and makes them his own. Just listen to the intro to the first track. Is there any doubt at all who is the artist here? Is it one of Willie's best efforts? In the context of his prolific body of work, probably not. Is it the best single artist collection of Kristofferson's writing in one place? Probably. Sure, Ray Price's is the definative "For The Good Times". Ditto for Johnny Cash's "Sunday Morning...", and who could ever forget Janis' version of "Me & Bobby McGee"? Artists from Sinatra to Al Green to Lawrence Welk to Dizzy Gillespie to 450+ others at last count have covered Kris' songs, mostly drawing from the same nine songs presented here. But these versions make them sound like they were written just for Willie and his sparse band. It would have been nice to also include "One Day At A Time" (co-written with Marijohn Wilkin) or one of the Kristofferson-Silverstein collaborations. The best of those, "Once More With Feeling" had already been re-released several times in compilations by RCA after Willie jumped to Columbia, so it's understandable why it didn't appear here.
Obviously recorded/mastered on analog equipment before Jimmy Bowen forced modern (for then) production values down Nashville's bean-counters' throats, the audio suffers a bit. Drums sound horrible with no high end, but vocals and most other instruments are ok. "Trigger" has a mellow sound because Willie wants it that way, or he wouldn't use nylon strings. The electric guitar sound falls victim to dated effects pedals on some, but not all, tracks. Columbia could probably do better now, but this album was issued on CD before the digital remix/remaster craze of the early-mid 90's when the technology really took off. Based on the quality/condition of the original analog masters, and lack of demand for an upgrade, this may be as good as we can hope for. And it's better than most of what came out of Nashville in 1979.
pragmatically speaking.......2004-09-26
If you can get a vinyl copy of this album, you will notice that on the back cover there is a close up head shot of willie and kris together. If you place the back side of this album slightly under the covers of your bed while still exposing the majority of the picture, you can make it look like they're in bed together. other than that, this album is not of much use.

Album Description
Soon after Bobby returned to RCA in 1972, he recorded an entire LP of songs by the legendary songwriter, cartoonist and humorist Shel Silverstein. The album yielded three hits, Daddy What If, Marie Laveau (Bobby's first ever #1 hit) and The Winner. Ten other songs feature Silverstein's weird and often ironic twist on the country song. This is regarded by many as Bobby's best-ever album!

Bobby Bare hits a homer!.......2002-10-16
This was the first album I ever bought, at the age of 12, with some money I had saved by mowning lawns. I listened to it for years until I wore the vinyl record out. "The Winner" and "Marie Leveaux" could be heard on the radio at the time but the real beauty of the album, I think, is the seldom-heard "Roaslie's Good Eats Cafe" and "In the Hills of Shiloh." Today, my wife uses "Rosalie's" to teach her 12th grade English students about descriptive writing. My two boys and I giggle at the "Mermaid", "Paul", "Sure Hit Songwriters Pen", and all the other great ones. Thanks Bobby & Shel for this artistic collaboration -- and for thirty years (and counting) of enjoyment.
An artists artist........2002-03-11
Many of these reviews are good but also erroneous. This is probably the best theme album of all time in any genre. But it was NOT the first theme album in country music. That distinction belongs to Johnny Cash in the early sixties. To appreciate ones music one does not have to denegrate someone elses music or contribution, or to have novice listeners make silly statements without them having the scope to be in the know. Johnny Cash says Bare is his favorite, he also was known as Jennings favorite. He also should be given more credit for the sweeping changes in the artist as being in control of their music.Far before Waylon and Willie , Bare learned from Cash how to rule his music from Nashville producers. Listen and enjoy . They are all favorites - but the last The Winner is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of any genre. Thanks Mr. Bare for your lifes music. Brad Stender.

One of the signature hits of the late Waylon Jennings was "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?" Well, here's Hank done Waylon's way, in previously unreleased recordings from 1985, when Jennings was in fine voice for what was obviously a labor of love. Whatever the reason that this project was shelved for two decades has nothing to do with the quality of the performances. There's a bit more fiddle and steel guitar than was common for Jennings, but many of the arrangements have a stripped-down musical intimacy, as a mournful harmonica serenades its way through "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," while "Mansion on the Hill" shows Jennings at his most tender. Among the other highlights, Jennings applies his trademark lope to "Hey Good Lookin'" and a goodtime growl to "Honky Tonkin'." A five-and-a-half-minute, spoken-word bonus track finds Jennings reminiscing about his formative musical experiences and the seminal influence of Hank Williams. --Don McLeese

This is Waylon singing Hank. It isn't his best product
Waylon the Great.......2007-01-14
This is classic Honky Tonk Hank Williams music and Waylon does a great job on every tune. The instrumentation is fantasic and I don't know why Barney "Max" gave this CD a one star rating because all tunes sound fine on my stereo system. "Max" get another stereo!! I love this CD and I am giving every tune 5 out of 5. If you love Hank Williams music, this CD is for you. Waylon is in fine form here and I am sure Hank would be proud.

It is ok, but I didn't get sold on this album totally. He still sounds like Waylan and his beat on some of the tunes. If you like Waylan you might like this ok.
Waylon showing his heart.......2006-10-30
This album displays a side of Waylon that lets you in his heart and really grabs hold of his gratitude for the legend Hank Williams. You can tell the album was made with sincere heart felt meaning behind it. A real fun track is "Jambalaya" that I could play over and over. The song "Be Careful of Stones That You Throw" really hit home for me and you can hear the deep reality for Waylon in this song as he sings it. Track 13 "Waylon Speaks" really tops off the album, because it unexpected and it's just like he's sitting right next to you sharing his thoughts. There were a few songs I didn't care for, but the more I listened to the album I was pulled in by the deep reality of each song and Waylon conveying those realites. He has a way of grabbing a hold of the listener and getting the message across to them.
I was pulled in by everything about this album and have told all my friends not to pass it up. These are one-of-a-kind unaltered recordings and I'm glad to have them in my Waylon collection.

Album Description
RED LEAF could easily be described as bluegrass for the adult contemporary set, with Becky's angelic Alison Krauss-like voice rising above her band's skillful picking.
The first track, "Alabama Sun" is a heartbreaking memoir of a farmer so elderly that no one in his hometown even remembers him. "Little Janie," about a mother who kills her daughter during a flu epidemic, is as morbid as a bluegrass song can get. Becky's songs run the gamut from personal and heart-achey to sweet and homey.
RED LEAF was recorded at the renowned MasterMix studios in Minnesota. It features the talents of acoustic luminaries Peter Ostroushko, Marc Anderson, and John Niemann.
Customer Reviews:
The new Alison Krauss?.......2003-12-02
This is an enjoyable recording of very pretty almost-bluegrass songs, all written by the singer with the Alison Krauss-like voice, Becky Schlegel. The lyrics are generally passable but unremarkable, with subjects ranging from sappy love songs - and her sweet voice goes well with these - to the joy of country life. On occasion they're remarkably touching ("Red Leaf") or remarkably annoying ("Sister Sam", which seems to be written from the point of view of someone who approves of the petty conflicts often arising between siblings about who's the favorite or who's not doing their share of taking care of the aging parents). But you wouldn't buy this for the lyrics; it's the gorgeous sound that takes liberties with traditional bluegrass, either by being more spare or by occasionally adding a forbidden instrument like an electric or pedal steel guitar. All in all, while comparisons with Alison Krauss are inevitable, and to my taste Ms. Schlegel is a tiny notch below Ms. Krauss as a vocalist, this is an enjoyable CD that should appeal to fans of modern bluegrass. If you like Alison Krauss, it's certainly worth a listen.

Though not among Johnny Cash's strongest overall efforts, True West is not a completely failed experiment, either. Originally released in 1965 as a double album, it weaves Cash's narrations and original compositions with traditional songs and interpretations of other writers' material to draw one man's portrait of the Old West. Cash turns in some of his sturdiest vocals, virtually inhabiting the likes of "I Ride an Old Paint" and Carl Perkins's morbid "Ballad of Boot Hill." And he gets points for not scrubbing up some of the more raggedy old traditional lyrics. But there's often too much extraneous stuff--background singers, strings, sound effects--and while they are clearly to Cash's specifications and executed seamlessly, his own weather-beaten voice alone would usually have been more effective; for all the drama in his vocals, too much of this exasperating set sounds like background music. By the way, this album's mythmaking "Hardin Wouldn't Run" provided the basis for Bob Dylan's mythmaking "John Wesley Harding." The 2002 reissue adds a pair of bonus tracks. --John Morthland

Sings Ballads of True West.......2007-02-01
This is probably my favorite Johnny Cash album. I first purchased it on a reel-to-reel tape in the early sixties. I love this CD even more. Thanks.
Incredible performance, brings the Old West to life!.......2006-12-11
These songs are great in and of themselves, representing the values and struggles of another, better time, the days of the Old West.
However, Johnny Cash's performance is just amazing. This is one of my favorite albums of all time and I cannnot recommend it highly enough to fans of the Old West and Johnny Cash.
I think, after listening to this album, that "Little Doggies" may be the best song ever written. Do yourself a favor, get this album.
Ambitious, but dated in its style..........2004-05-06
Being a Cash fan since 1956, when I was 11, I think I can say that for 1965, this was a pretty good double-LP release that increased Johnny's stature as a folk artist, not just a commercial country or rockabilly performer. Judged by today's standards and tastes, however, it suffers quite a bit. There is too much recitation, both poems and prose narration. There is too much "production" in many of the songs (compare his stark "Bury Me Not" on American Recordings One to the version here.) If any other country performer had TALKED so much on an album, I'd rate it much lower...but Johnny, of course, had a magnificent speaking voice. Still, we fans want him singing, not reciting. And when he sings here, his own interpretions are fine. He had input, but not performing help, from Tex Ritter, Peter LaFarge and Ramblin' Jack Elliot when he was preparing this record, and if those guys had chimed in with backing vocals instead of The Statler Brothers and the Anita Kerr Singers, this effort would be highly prized by folk fans today. Alas, who knew back then that the public would end up preferring just Cash and one guitar on his discs, instead of a whole bunch of supporters? If you like Western songs, and lack some of these in your collection, this is a good price for what you get. I wouldn't recommend it as a person's first Johnny Cash purchase, or even his 10th. Somewhere after that, go ahead, because it doesn't stink...it just isn't the very best of Mr. Cash. One needs his early Sun sides, one of his first three Columbia releases, one of the prison albums, and one or more of the four late-career discs produced by Rick Rubin ahead of "Ballads of the True West." And perhaps "Bitter Tears", full of Indian protest tunes written by LaFarge, before getting this one, too.
For die hard fans only.......2003-10-18
I can't sleep knowing there is a Johnny Cash album out there I don't have (Greatest Hits and Tributes excluded), which is why I bought this days after it's resissue, but I know a mediocre album when I hear one. Actually, this would be an awesome album if it weren't a double album. There's a lot of filler in between the good stuff. And the good stuff I'd heard before(except Sam Hall). If you don't own many Cash albums, don't get this one yet. But if you have a lot of his stuff, then get it if only to support the reissue process (currently I'm holding my breath for Hello I'm Johnny Cash).
Songs of the Old West.......2003-09-13
A nice collection of western songs, sung by the great baritone voice of Johnny Cash, that evoke a feeling of loneliness and heartbreak, but with a sense of hope left.
My personal favorites are "Sam Hall", "Streets of Laredo", "25 Minutes to Go", and "Mister Garfield."
Johnny Cash was an American classic who will be sorely missed.
Highly Recommended!

Many were surprised when Tom Wopat, best known for The Dukes of Hazzard, proved so good in the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun. But while TV gave him fame, the musical theater had provided his acting chops. In the years since Annie, Wopat has only confirmed his status as one of the musical theater's most compelling leading men: He's toured with Chicago and performed as a solo cabaret act. Wopat's husky, sexy brand of masculinity works rather well with this repertoire, as examplified by this disc, his second collection of standards after 2000's In the Still of the Night Backed by a small jazz combo, Wopat opts for a nonchalant approach to Harold Arlen's songs--a nicely swinging version of "If I Only Had a Brain" is a notable exception. Even over-covered chestnuts like "Over the Rainbow" and "That Old Black Magic" come out sounding refreshed. Wopat tackles them respectfully but somehow puts his stamp on them. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Strong performance against the current.......2006-01-02
Thanks to Diana Krall, present-day female singers of the American Songbook at least have a fighting chance in the marketplace of public taste. But any male singer who records these standards, favoring a jazz-oriented approach and moreover emphasizing ballads, has got an uphill struggle. Six years ago Jack Jones issued a sublime recording ("Paints a Tribute to Tony Bennett") that has largely gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Tom Wopat's new album is equally deserving. He's a first-rate musician, has a trained yet "natural" and engaging vocal quality (arguably fuller and richer than Jack's at this stage), and extracts all of the complex, often bittersweet, drama from the lyrics of these songs.
I'm withholding a star because I find that the program fails to hold my attention at a single sitting. The rhythm section and arrangements are top-notch, so it's hard to put a finger on what produces the sense of sameness. For one thing, this is an especially "generous" (i.e. long) program. Also, when going with the music of a single composer--especially when so many of these songs were written for screen or Broadway musicals and when the performer's background (apart from his starring role in "The Dukes of Hazzard") is musical theater--it would make sense to vary the textures with some fuller orchestrations, if only the addition of several horn players.
Nonetheless, you can't go wrong with musicians and repertory of this caliber. Recommended.
What a disappointment.......2005-03-14
I am a fan of Harold Arlen's music and I thoroughly enjoyed Tom Wopat's The Still of the Night so I was eagerly awaiting this release. What a disappointment! The pointlessly noodling jazz arrangements suck all of the melody and enjoyment out of these glorious tunes. And Wopat's voice is just not suited for some of this material. Avoid this disc and check out The Still of the Night instead.
If six stars was an option, this CD would get all six!.......2005-02-25
Tom Wopat is no Brent Barret or Michael Crawford. His is not a big, showy voice, but he uses his vocal instrument effectively. On this album he creates a cohesive offering that will surprise you with its sophistication and just plain fine musicianship. Sure, you've heard most of these songs countless times before, but Wopat delivers them in ways strikingly his own. If ever a song has been overdone, it's "Over the Rainbow", but here the singer makes it his own. "One For My Baby" will make you forget Sinatra's previously definitive version (at least momentarily). The title track is new to me and is as wonderful as the more familiar tunes. The jazz setting throughout is perfect, voice and instrumentation ideally matched, neither overshadowing the other. I feel confident that this will be music I will go back to repeatedly. Fantastic!
Fantabulous!.......2005-02-24
It's easy to turn your nose up at Tom Wopat as a legitimate jazz artist, but Dissertation on the State of Bliss really shows Wopat's versatility. His tribute album to Harold Arlen is one of those "turn the lights down, run yourself a warm bubble bath, and have a glass of wine" albums with a voice that is both smooth and sexy.
Tom Wopat has definitely proven that he's an artist to be taken seriously.
