This CD includes material from two fine small-group sessions recorded in 1955 and '56, with arrangements provided by clarinetist Tony Scott and excellent support from trumpeter Charlie Shavers, tenorist Budd Johnson, and a young Kenny Burrell on guitar. The standards of the first session come alive with Holiday's ability to bring complex shadings to familiar material, while the later session includes some of her most personal and emotionally charged material. Her voice has a searing intensity on the late recording of "Strange Fruit," and there are powerful versions of "God Bless the Child" and "Lady Sings the Blues," songs written with Holiday's own lyrics. The CD concludes with an intimate view of Lady Day at work, a 15-minute rehearsal tape of her working through "God Bless the Child" with Scott at the piano. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Beleive it -- this album is a must for Billie fans........2004-12-29
I recently acquired this album and though it has the basic Billie repertoire I am really impressed by the arrangements and the new life Bilie is bringing to her old classics. Billie has come full circle in this album accompanied by great muscians -- it had me mesmerized. Billies' singing has lifted up my spirits and I don't like to critic and hope this review will make the future buyer of this album experience what I experienced. The trumpet and the piano and the sax and Billie is the best.
Ah, the Verve years.......2004-01-02
Yes, this is a fantastic release, but my biggest complaint is the songs are not in the same order as the original release (cd or lp), so if you rearrange them to be in their proper order, it's fine, but why would they rearrange the tracks? A bad mistake, one which, in my opinion, keeps this from a 5 star rating. I'm of the opinion that Holiday's Verve (high) years were her best, and, of course, there are two camps in this 'argument' so we'll have to agree to disagree. The Verve years have always been, and always will be, my personal favorite. Nothing like this early in the morning with your favorite cup of java.
A Curiosity.......2003-05-29
I would have to take strong exception to the notion that Billie's late period is her best. She gets so much emotion out of a song that the added "drama" of her increasingly troubled life and waning pipes becomes, at best, superfluous and, at worst, a distraction. Nevertheless, this 1956 collection, one of Verve's "Desert Island Discs," has much to offer, particularly her singularly affecting interpretation of Dorothy Parker's "I Wished on the Moon" (taken at a slower tempo than on her other recordings and with the inclusion of the song's verse).
But at over 117 minutes (How did Verve pull that off? Aren't non-compressed CD's limited to 80 minutes?), the program begins to run out of steam. The "arrangements" are quickly-sketched heads by Tony Scott, whose clarinet becomes cloying and overly-busy at times (especially when he insists on improvising during Billie's singing). Tempos and voicings become pretty predictable, though there are some sparkling solos by pianist Billy Taylor as well as trumpeter Charlie Shavers.
The photos of Billie shot during the session capture a different side of her--neither the glamorous Lady Day of the past nor the mummified, cosmetic beauty of her "Lady in Satin" album but the hard, yet very "natural," look of a harried, tired school teacher who still, somehow, suggests that she means business.
The real kicker on this CD is the inclusion of the 15-minute rehearsal tape (made on a cheap home machine) of Scott and Billie going over (and over and over) "God Bless the Child" in search of a key and arrangement that the singer can assent to. What surprised me was Billie's strength and command. Even though the first key is a fifth above the one that is finally settled on, she executes the upper-register notes in the higher key with surprising ease and power. Moreover, she lays to rest the misconception (admittedly, shared by me) that her voice during this period was largely a whisper salvaged by the microphone. Not only does she project the song; she practically belts it!
Lady Day's Best Work Despite The Bad Times She Had.......2002-01-25
There are two schools of fans when it comes to Lady Day :(1) fans who loved her voice when she was strong and brilliant, resounding with a fine vibratto before the drugs came into play and (2) the post-drug Holiday who still can swing and jazz the songs up fine and dandy, even singing songs that are heartbreaking to her. I belong to the second. Holiday has a brilliant touch in singing jazz, blues and, yes, even love songs. Her brilliance shines so strongly in this CD that you can feel every beat of her heart that saw rough times. I have never heard a better version of P.S. I Love You or I Thought About You. Aside from the wonderful interpretation brought by her, the CD quality sound of the songs brings her voice alive and well. Lady Day deserves to be heard by her fans, especially those who love to hear her swing or cry about this thing called love.
Not great.......2000-07-13
While I love Billie, in her own words, these sessions were dull, and uninspired. Since the reviews should focus on one CD, that is the jist of it; boring renditions, and back up musicians that are not the ones that Billie was used to making for a very uneven collection.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful music at a bargan price!.......2006-05-28
I didn't expect the quality of the music to be so good, but I have no complaints (very clear with no static, etc). You get around 99 songs for a fraction of what they would cost on iTunes. I have always loved her music and was delighted to see so many songs in one collection.
Billie Holiday Box Set.......2005-08-15
The music is great, but I was VERY disappointed to receive the set because the box that holds all of the CDs is smashed on one side. It is VERY unattractive.
Better appreciated now than in her lifetime.......2004-03-29
Nobody sings the blues quite like Billie Holiday. This boxed set represents the best value for money, not only for the quantity of music and the extensive liner notes, but also for the sound quality and the fact that this contains music recorded for several different record labels (Brunswick, Vocalion, Commodore, Okeh, Columbia, Capitol, Decca) between 1935 and 1949. Billie continued to record great music in the fifties (for Verve, Clef and Norgran) but that music is not represented here.
Billie had plenty of hits on the American pop charts between 1935 and 1938 (when she was with Teddy Wilson), after which she had just four more hits, none of them reaching the top ten. However, the passage of time has added substantially to her credibility as many blues, jazz and R+B singers cite Billie as one of their influences. Her first hit was What a little moonlight can do, a song I first came across via a Crystal Gayle cover. I didn't realize the song's origin at the time but I've heard several versions since. I love them all but Billie's is the definitive version.
Billie's other classic hits included here are These foolish things, A fine romance, The way you look tonight, I can't give you anything but love, I've got my love to keep you warm, This year's kisses, Carelessly (her only number one hit), How could you, Moaning low. Mean to me, Easy living, Me myself and I, Sailboat in the moonlight, Nice work if you can get it, My man, You go to my head, I'm gonna lock my heart, Strange fruit, God bless the child and Trav'lin' light. Some big hits are omitted including Twenty-four hours a day, Who loves you and Pennies from heaven, but I'm not complaining. Some of the songs that Billie is best remembered for didn't chart at all.
Although the hits became rare after 1938, this was not due to the quality of the music. Listen to Billie's versions of such classic standards as I gotta right to sing the blues, Night and day, Body and soul, Let's do it, All of me, Love me or leave me, It's a sin to tell a lie, As time goes by and You're my thrill (to name a few). And, of course, there's the classic That old devil called love, revived by Alison Moyet in the eighties, when it became a UK number two hit for Alison.
If you only buy one collection of Billie's music, make it this one. You might begin by asking yourself if you really want five hours worth of Billie's music - but eventually, you are likely to ask yourself if it's enough.
Another Outstanding Product from the Proper Label.......2003-11-04
Great sound quality, packaging, liner notes and booklet. 4 discs, 99 songs, 21 bucks. Huh? What's the catch?
The best part is - there isn't any. Just another great product from the British label, Proper - which seems to appreciate great American music even more than Americans do.
Most, if not every, Holliday song on every label - Decca, Commodore, Columbia - released between 1935 to 1949. Now you've got the early to mid (and in many people's minds, the best) recording eras of Holliday covered.
It sure beats any other "best of" out there. Why save $6 to get one disc with 10 to 20 songs. (And unlike the Ken Burns collection, the songs on this box set sound great).
Buy it as an introduction to Lady Day. Keep it as a collector.
PROPER does it again..........2003-09-07
For the price, this is as good a collection of Billie Holiday's early material (for some, the ONLY Billie) as there is out there. Almost all of the essential recordings are included - Brunswick, Vocalition, Decca, Columbia, and Commodore - and the presentation includes a great booklet with photos and information. Proper is in the process of putting together and releasing some of the best American music - both jazz and other-wise - in stunning compilations with great presentations. Look for more of them.

ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF COOL AT HIS ELEGANT BEST.......2005-04-05
Don't listen to the reviewer below. (Phew!! Some people!!) Chet always sang a little flat. That was his style. People either love his voice or hate it.
This is mostly an undiscovered treasure from Chet Baker. Chet made a lot of bad and questionable recordings. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. This is one of his least known and more romantic recordings. And I know that's what your looking for. Why else would you be searching out Chet's music? His vocals never sounded better. In 1964, Chet had just returned from Europe after being expelled from almost every country and was a full-blown junkie. But you'd never know it by listening to BAKER'S HOLIDAY. In 1965, this record immediately followed BABY BREEZE (another great record) and didn't sell well. But Baker had a new romance in his life as he began to slowly abandon his third marriage. He must have been in love because this recording just drips ROMANTIC COOL, as well as being a great tribute to Lady Day. Chet sings on 4 tunes here and plays flugelhorn (because someone stole his trumpet) over guitar, piano, rhythm section, and a lovely reed ensemble. The elegant song selections couldn't be better. And to top it all off, it's got just the right amount of SWING!!
If you like the romantic side of Chet Baker, put this in your CART. You probably already own LET'S GET LOST: THE BEST OF CHET BAKER SINGS and MY FUNNY VALENTINE and you're looking for more, right? THIS IS ONE OF HIS BEST. But why are you listening to me? Sample the MAGIC for yourself.
ENJOY.
Baker's Holiday.......2000-10-26
This is a mid-sixties recording of Chet and though there are a few good moments, Chet is not in top form. "Travelin' Light", the opening track, is a great song with sparse arrangements but unfortunately, Chet's pitch is flat(sorry Chet). As for the other tracks, some are memorable, though kind of 60's/New York/Mary Tyler Moorish...I would recommend his albums "Italian Sessions" as some free spirited, top notch playing and "My Funny Valentine" to hear his voice. Chet Baker was a fantastic musician but I really think the best thing about this album is the material.
A classy tribute to Lady Day..........2000-06-25
On this enjoyable outing, Chet baker pays tribute to Billie Holiday by playing and singing the ballads that were most associated with her. Baker does a wondeful job on this very fine tribute with some exquisite big band backing.
Stunning..........1999-10-01
This exquisite session is well worth picking up, Baker's tribute to Holiday is touching, he sings and plays in a big band setting, mostly ballads that Lady Day was famous for. Recommended.

Excellent choice of superior performances.......2005-09-19
I am thrilled to see how many different recordings there are of Billie Holiday material. My dismay with all these titles is that I am sure there is an enormous amount of repetition across many issues and reissues ane re-reissues.
As I am not familiar with many of these recordings, I will simply say that this CD and its companion (Verve Jazz Masters 12 and Verve Jazz Masters 47 (Sings Standards) are both excellent choices if you just happen to want a good sampling of Ms. Holliday's works. They are certainly good selections at a low price if you happen to want to find out if you wish to hear more of this renowned artist.
My greatest take on Billie Holiday's interpretations of pop standards is that she really makes you buy into the sentiments of the 'moon, June, spoon' class of song. She is also able to give a remarkable twist to classics which are not nominally Jazz standards.
My favorite is her rendition of the Ogden Nash / Kurt Weill classic song 'Sing Low'. I have heard this done by Lotte Lenya, Barbara Streisand, and Ute Lemper, to pick three very different artists, and I think Ms. Holiday and her arrangers really bring something new to this great song.
If you are simply looking for a good sampling of Ms. Holiday's work, you cannot go wrong with either of these recordings.

This is one not to be without!.......2007-02-25
It really doesn't get much better than this! Lady Day must have been smiling from the heavens after this release in her honor two years after her untimely death. As author Will Friedwald writes in his liner notes "more than any other artist, Carmen McRae captured the majesty and the magic of Billie Holiday..."
This is definitely one of the greatest jazz vocal recordings of all-time on anyone's list. What an amazing voice! Also, it never hurts to have an all-star line-up backing you up - Nat Adderly (cornet), Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (tenor sax), Mundell Lowe (guitar), Norman Simmons (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Walter Perkins (drums). They all sound just as inspired as Carmen and give great performances.
If you enjoy listening to great music of this genre, then this is simply a must for your collection. It's just an absolute perfect recording and it's hard to imagine any fan of jazz not enjoying this. I certainly have never met one! There is not one song that isn't great.
Could not recommend this one enough!
New life and meaning for some of Billie's greatest songs........2005-10-01
In this stunning CD, Carmen McRae pays homage to her friend and idol, Billie Holiday, singing the twelve songs on the original album, plus two bonus tracks--"If the Moon Turns Green," sung as a wonderfully slow ballad, and Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song," with its slower than usual pacing.
With her strong alto, huge range, and ability to change moods, McRae varies her sound throughout the CD, sometimes sounding deliberately gravelly, then switching to softly sweet and romantic, matching the timbre of the instruments accompanying her. She alternates her tempo from slow and dramatic to lively, jazzy, flirty, or intimate. Always, she and the musicians accompanying her are in perfect sync, both in interpreting the lyrics and improvising with the melodies.
Every song is a winner. "Them There Eyes," begins with McRae singing off-rhythm, accompanied by a simple bass (Bob Cranshaw) and drums (Walter Perkins) before the sax (Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis) enters. "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart," is the happiest, with McRae hitting some surprising high notes. "Miss Brown to You," swings in a loose, flirty manner, and "I Cried for You" features McRae sounding like a muted trumpet and wailing. "Lover Man" is wonderfully bluesy, with a toe-tapping rhythm and improvisation, while "A Little Moonlight," with great piano (Norman Simmons), sax (Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis) and trumpet (Nat Adderley) solos, is wild and impassioned.
"Yesterdays," my favorite, begins as a slow, harshly melancholy song with sensitive piano background, then suddenly pauses slightly in the middle, and shifts to a faster, jazzier, more rhythmic line in which McRae is up and down and all over the scale. "Strange Fruit," one of Holiday's signature songs, is finely articulated, and McRae's phrasing and ironically sweet tones give even more emphasis to the horrifying lyrics as Mundell Lowe's guitar provides the mournful accompaniment. The remixing and the total absence of background noise add incredible drama to this already powerful song. "God Bless the Child," written by Holiday, is slow and intimate, and as McRae phrases the story, her wailing adds poignancy to the lyrics.
Blessed with a voice and style that naturally adapts to any kind of jazz, along with the ability to articulate lyrics with perfect enunciation and phrasing, McRae is the consummate musician here. Singing some of Billie Holiday's best songs, and accompanied by world class artists with whom she is totally in sync, McRae in this CD is as good as it gets. n Mary Whipple
One of the All Time Greats.......2004-10-16
In June of 2004, "Down Beat" Magazine's Frank-John Hadley polled 73 of the top jazz singers in the world for a list of the 30 greatest vocal jazz albums of all time. This one ended up #5. I say, "Right on." This is truly one of the all-time greats.
In fact, ironically, this one ended up higher than any of Billie Holiday's albums ("Billie Holiday on Commodore"--#8, in case you're interested.), and this is a Lady Day tribute. But after a number of listens, I'm here to say--it's no accident. The worlds' finest know what they're talking about.
Carmen McRae swings like mad here, in a way that Lady Day never did. She even swings the last chorus of "Yesterdays", and "Trav'lin' Light", two songs I've not heard swung before. And the way she swings "Them There Eyes", "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart (And Throw Away the Key)", "Miss Brown To You", "I Cried For You" and "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" will have you snapping your fingers and dancing around the room. Terrific, terrific stuff--and Nat Adderley and Lockjaw Davis' solos on "Moonlight" make this rival the immortal version of Lady Day's.
But Lady Day was the tops for honest emotion, and Ms. McRae is every bit her equal here. Carmen hits every color of anger, bitterness and resignation in "Strange Fruit", as Lady Day did in the famous original. Her handling of the phrase "They Don't Come 'Round No More" in "God Bless the Child" matches the world-weary disappointment in dependent false friends that Billie Holiday conveyed in the original. And when Ms. McRae sings "Make Love to Me" in "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You be)", there not only is no doubt about what she means, but you better drop what you're doing and get busy, Mister!!
BTW, the 73 have Carmen's "Carmen Sings Monk" at #4. These two albums rank higher than any album cut by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan or Miss Holiday. After listening to this, I'm thinking that, as revered as she was, Carmen McRae was probably the most underrated jazz singer who ever lived. RC
The one and only Carmen.......2004-05-09
WOW...carmen paying tribute to my favorite jazz singer, Billie holiday...
This CD is excellent...great sound...great interpretations by Carmen. I highly recommend this CD. Love how she sings "strange fruit".
Carmen's Got Billie Under Her Skin.......2001-04-16
This CD probably ranks among the top 5 CD's Carmen McRae's ever recorded, and we're talking about an artist who's done close to 70 in her career. What distinguishes this particular CD are the strong lineup of chosen songs and group of sidemen selected to back Carmen. As any fan of Carmen knows, Billie was her idol and mentor; Carmen basically lived and breathed these songs because they're so closely identified to Lady Day. The tribute album was a natural progression for Carmen, though not without some resistance. Carmen even notes in the liner that the record company wouldn't let her record the album until almost two years after Lady's death. Each song has Carmen's heart and soul written all over it. It is truly an inspired performance because these songs mean so much to her personally. One or two of the guys here actually played with Billie as well such as Harry "Sweets" Edison. Norman Simmons on piano makes a great counterpart to Oscar Peterson. On a technical and emotional level, this is one of Carmen's great works of the heart and with much love to her Lady. Her fans are all the better for it.

Customer Reviews:
A good collection to get acquainted to Billie Holiday.......2005-04-12
Indeed, there are dozens of Billie Holiday collections. This one is made mostly of popular songs of that epoch. With composers like George Gershwin, or Frank Sinatra, you can be sure that the songs are very good. What is not so good is the sound quality. Since most of the tracks were recorded in late 30s, many of them sound quite not so good, and it got me a few spins to overstep sound quality of several tracks and start appreciating music. And there's a lot to appreciate here. Billie was not known for her vocal range. Instead, she was uncomparable at playing with her voice and putting emotions in her singing.
This collection is made of songs of different emotional content, so it's a fairly good example of what Billie could do. The accompanying musicians are some of the best of that time. The names like Count Basie, Teddie Wilson, or Benny Goodman need no introduction. If you're not going to be annoyed by poor sound quality of several tracks here, then this collection is a fine introduction to Billie Holiday's musical legacy, and considering its near bargain price, it would be hard to find anything better.
Astoundingly good.......2003-09-29
There are way too many Billie Holiday retrospectives out there of lesser quality. But this CD really is a "best of" collection. Most of the recordings are from the late 1930s, when Holiday was at the height of her powers, before depression and drug use began to destroy her. Don't let the old sound turn you off, however. Just listen to the way she plays with the "them... there... EY-es!" phrase on the first track. Her intelligence, humor, emotional honesty, and ability to flat-out swing on these tunes will make you a believer.
Billie's Cream of the Crop.......2000-12-22
This CD captures the essence of Billie Holiday's greatness--her timing, swing, improvisation, delivering the core truth of each song with a balanced care to both lyrics and emotional impact. Those are just SOME what made Billie an enduring beloved singer in the minds (and ears) of her legions of fans. Songs are well-chosen, not one clunker in the entire bunch. At first I was disappointed with the 2 selections from "Lady in Satin" when her voice technically had declined to a croak, to pardon the expression. Still the emotional interpretation leaves no heart unstirred as she commands the listener's attention to the love unrequited kind only Billie knew how to deliver in song. Overall, the songs are picked from Billie's golden age of late 1930s. Sound remastering is done to a very good standard, though some hisses are still evident but clarity is excellent considering when these songs were recorded. Each time brings new meaning and nuance listening to this CD, not to mention a smile on the swing songs and a tear on the torchy ones. A must have for all of Billie's fans!
Billie's Cream of the Crop.......2000-12-20
This is one of those "Desert Island" CDs you'll want to own if you're stranded somewhere. Sound quality could be better, but it's quite listenable. Sony did a better job remastering Billie's "Lady in Satin" and "Love Songs" CDs, but the song selection is hard to quibble with, taking many of her definitive recordings from the '30s---this is "cream of the crop" stuff. Good balance between the fast tempo stuff (I'll Get By, Them There Eyes, Summertime) and her more well-known slow burners. It's amazing in her early 20s Billie already developed a unique vocal style, her voice captured with good fullness and warmth on these recordings. I would have left out the two tracks from her "Lady in Satin" LP and replaced them with two from her 30s catalogue, God knows there should have been plenty, but that's a minor quibble. It shows Billie still came up with the goods even in her "decline" in the late 1950s.
Classic Songs The Way They Should Be Sung: By Billie Holiday.......2000-08-17
This album is a must-have, even if it is a best-of collection. With such classics as "Them There Eyes", "Summertime", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me" this album should issued to everybody through the mail or given out in public schools. It is a good comprehensive view of Lady Day all the way to her last album "Lady In Satin" which two songs (I'm a Fool to Want You and You Don't Know What Love Is) come from. On more than one occasion I have used "Them There Eyes" and "The Very Thought of You" as selections that I have serenaded girls with. In every instance they evoke a look of admiration in the young females eyes. If these songs can evoke that type of response coming out of my mouth, they have to be spectacular coming out of one of the greatest female vocalists ever.

Customer Reviews:
The day of an Irish lady.......2001-03-23
Mary Coughlan is a pop singer with a voice that remembers Marianne Faithfull and Marlene Dietrich. Her rendition to Lady Day's classical numbers, recorded alive in Dublin, shows us a great surprise and a personal style with her "blasés" but emotional performances. The best of Billie Holiday is here - from a melancholic swing in "All of me" to "Strange Fruit" sang "a cappella". Highlight in this double-CD is Professor Peter O'Brien at the piano. He proves that irishes know play jazz as the best American masters
The wonderful world of Mary and Billie.......2000-11-07
I am sorry but I couldn't wait. A friend from Ireland sent me this CD. The combination of Billie Holiday songs and Mary Coughlan's beautiful voice seemed too good to waste time. If you already know Mary Coughlan, you also might know that it's not the first time for her that she covers Billie Holiday song. But this CD is different!! Mary manage to create the admospfer which is so typical for Billie while she adds to it with her own -hard to describe- voice. I'll give it a try: warm, emotional, angry, hurt and sensitive. All ingredients you need to be able to sing Billie without giving your audience the feeling that it was only a good attempt. When you listen to this double (!) CD you feel and see both Mary and Billie, Don't ask me how she does it. Take for instance 'You'll be there'. You see it happening and you feel the desire, even if you never were it this position yourself (but who wasn't?). Or take the famous song 'God Bless the child'. You want to listen to this gift without being disturbed by daily things like a ringing telephone or a neighbour knocking at your door. The musicians are briljant. They manage to stay close to the original arrangements, to support Mary's voice and to add to those two essential ingredients by showing their creative professionalism in a modest way. If I only could write this review in Dutch, because even than it would be difficult to find the right words to describe this exceptional CD! Do you like Billie Holiday? Get this CD! Do you like Mary Coughlan? Get this CD! Do you like both? Get this CD! You don't know either of them? It's high time you allow yourself an introduction to the wonderful world of Mary and Billie! Eat it, drink it and enjoy!
serendipitous.......2000-11-04
I backed into this lady through a "Dorothy Parker" web site. One month later and I can't get enough of her. Don't go here if you want Lady Day come here if you've heard Mary before and want to see where she is going. Wonderful interpretations as only she can do, Nice backups are a little too "pat" for most Jazzoids in the US but listen to her......first album to this and ENJOY!
