Susan McKeown not only has one of the finest voices in contemporary Irish music, she has wedded a profound understanding of the traditional songs of Ireland with an adventurous musical spirit. On Lowlands, her second collection of traditional songs, her connection with the roots of Celtic music is so deep that when she mixes instruments like the kora (African harp), erhu (Chinese fiddle), and tabla (Indian drum) with the less exotic violin, guitar, and tin whistle the results sound absolutely right. McKeown moved from her native Dublin to New York in 1990, an event that she says paradoxically made her feel more Irish. Songs like "The Snows They Melt the Soonest," which features the fiddling of Johnny Cunningham, and "The Lowlands of Holland," a lament about a lover's death at sea, are infused with the sense of loss and longing that haunt the emigrant in a new land. On Lowlands Susan McKeown performs a rare feat of artistic alchemy by transforming sorrow into beauty. --Michael Simmons
From Rhythm Magazine
One of the strongest, most expressive voices in Celtic music belongs to Dublin native Susan McKeown. Her powerful pipes mix equal parts Sandy Denny and Siniad O'Connor, creating a primal sound that would guarantee stardom if she sang pop or rock. That inevitable climb may take just a little longer since Ms. McKeown is not content to sing obvious songs in a typical way. She looks for buried traditional treasures and then adds interesting instrumentation to massage her supple tones. Johnny Cunningham, Joanie Madden, Glen Moore, Jamshied Sharifi and other special guests are outstanding, but it is McKeown's voice that demands attention. Lowlands is this artist's fifth release but her first for Green Linnet. Poised to win a larger audience, Susan McKeown is ready for the spotlight she so definitely deserves, and will undoubtedly get. -James Rodgers

Celtic ballads with gentle world music influences.......2006-10-01
"Lowlands" is a perfect name for this album, which showcases the lush, low, sultry voice of Susan McKeown. She sings a collection of eleven Irish and Scottish ballads accompanied by a world-spanning variety of instrumentalists playing everything from guitar, fiddle, whistle, pipes and bodhran to kora, kaval, finger cymbals, Chinese erhu and Indian tablas. This isn't club-style "world beat" music, however. The tempos vary, the vocals are intimate and lingering, and the world music flavors are acoustic only, blending in tastefully but rarely overshadowing the distinctly Celtic character of the songs. "Lowlands" is music to be savored, appreciated both for it's nuance and its rich and clever arrangements. My favorites are the rhythmic, mysterious "An Nighean Dubh," the bouncy "Hare's Lament," the flamenco-influenced "Sian agus Beannacht," and the Mid-East-tinged "Lord Baker." The liner notes are very informative too, not only sharing Susan's personal reminiscences about when she first heard the pieces, but also documenting their original sources in terms of oral tradition, scholarship and/or earlier recordings. Joining McKeown on this album are, among others, Johnny Cunningham on fiddle, Joanie Madden on whistles, Aidan Brennan on guitar, Mamadou Diabate on kora, Samir Chatterjee on tablas, Wang Guowei on erhu, Eamon O'Leary on banjo, and Matt Darriau on kaval, gaida and clarinets. If you like Susan McKeown's voice, check out also the recordings of singers Niamh Parsons and Mary McLaughlin.
Celtic Woman With An International Flair.......2006-07-04
I ordered a used copy of this through Amazon, and I just received it today. I bought it based on the reviews, something I only do once in a great while, but I was intrigued. After only one listen all the way through and return visits to two of the songs that hooked me, I can already predict that this CD will be receiving some heavy rotation on my stereo in the coming weeks. I've been kind of off Celtic music for a while (guess I've been burned out from too much of the same old, same old), but this collection of songs is different. Not since Eliza Carthy's wonderful ANGELS & CIGARETTES have I been as intrigued by a heretofore unknown singer (that is, unknown to me). This is not your routine collection of Irish ballads and jigs. Love the African kora on "Lord Baker," and the choice of Chinese erhu for the oft-covered "Lowlands Of Holland" is inspired. McKeown's voice is not the most distinctive I've ever heard, but it's easy on the ears, and her singing is expressive and soulful. LOWLANDS is good enough for me to want to hear other work by this artist.
Vocals That Sweep You Away.......2003-05-28
If you've yet to hear Susan McKeown sing, you don't know what you're missing out on. Likely one of the most stunningly original and artistic Celtic singers in recent history, Ms. McKeown's sixth album, Lowlands, has fast become one of my favorites. Powerful, ethereal and yet earthy and raw, her voice is the signature element of this CD; with the remarkable range of accompanying artists building the landscape that houses it.
Lowlands is a collection of mostly traditional Celtic songs, performed with a markedly non-traditional flair. Bodhrans, banjos, the kora and the bouzouki . . . the instrument selection is varied and fascinating. Susan performs them all with passion and lovely evocative technique.
For a bouncy, light selection in Gaelic "An Nighean Dubh" is an excellent opening track, with Susan's voice dancing through the song effortlessly, buoyed up by a mix of instruments that embellish and provide tempo, but never overtake her voice as the star attraction. "The Snows They Melt the Soonest" is a sweet track with sparse accompaniment--soft guitar and violin-- to accompany this bittersweet love song. "Bonny Greenwoodside" is a traditional Scottish murder ballad, performed with simple chant and percussion style. Stripped to the bones it is starkly effective and powerfully haunting. The only non-traditional number on here is perhaps my favorite of them all. "Dark Horse of Ireland" written by Liam Weldon. This dark commentary on the bitterness and pain of war and rebellion is a perfect match for McKeown's voice. This selection, devoid of all instrumentals and with only the sound of wind at the introduction, impresses on the listener McKeown's vocal power.
I could probably go on at length about each and every number on this CD, but I will leave that to the listener to discover. If your looking for comfortable background music, this is probably not your best choice--McKeown's style is meant to pull the listener in and inspire emotion. This is the kind of CD to savor when you have time to relax and listen, I tend to use it in between writing as inspiration. While not for everyone, Susan McKeown was an unexpected delight to this listener, and I look forward to discovering more of her work.
Happy Listening! ^_^ Shanshad

Fine celtic folk music! Well worth buying. A must for any celtic music lover.
Lowlands is anything but........2002-02-11
I first heard this cd while browsing at a large scale book-music store and what pulled me her direction was the uniqueness of her songs--there's variety: strength, sensitivity, humor, sadness and Susan's powerful voice. Later, I also bought "Bushes and Briars" which is similar and wonderful, and then "Mighty Rain" which is just vocal and stand up bass and not for everybody. Her earlier albums are less refined and whatever it is she's doing now works for me perfectly.

Accomplished Debut for Unique Young Kiwi Bass-Baritone.......2005-05-25
I was impressed enough with young bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu's recently released "Opera Arias" disc to get his 2002 recital debut CD, especially since it is part of the bargain-priced EMI Classics "Debut" series, the same series that produced fellow baritone Nathan Gunn's wonderful 1999 folk song panorama, "American Anthem". This time, Lemalu is accompanied only by the sure hands of pianist Roger Vignoles rather than a full orchestra, and the results are no less enthralling. His booming voice is amazingly nuanced and quite resonant for such a young singer (he was 25 when he recorded this disc), and his program is thoughtful and well-rounded here.
First, Lemalu ambitiously tackles Brahms' penultimate opus, "Vier ernste Gesänge" ("Four Serious Songs"). Written a year before the composer's death, they carry a dark funereal tone, which Lemalu carries with appropriate heft initially and then expertly lightens the tone with each successive song until he achieves a measured level of romanticism on the last one, "Wenn ich mit Menschen" about St. Paul's sermon on love in his first Epistle to the Corinthians. The Schubert series carries a fatalistic romanticism throughout the four selections here, which Lemalu showcases most notably on "Auf der Donau", which places a Johann Mayrhofer poem in a wintry setting, and "Der Schiffer", a beautifully rhythmic combination of rolling piano and sharply enunciated German verse. The four brief pieces that make up Fauré's "L'Horizon chimérique" ("The Illusory Horizon") are dream-like discourses that use images in nature to focus ironically on the disenchantment that comes with love.
The tone shifts gears with the English folk songs that make up the remainder of the program. Lemalu is downright jolly on the rambunctious "Rollicum-rorum" and openly yearning on the swooning "To Lizbie Browne", the latter my favorite track and his most accomplished performance here. The four remaining songs are devoted to the sea - the melancholy "Lowlands" is a chantey that sounds quite a bit like "Shenandoah" and beautiful all the same; "Sea Fever" and "Trade Winds" both vividly capture a sailor's need for the high seas in individually distinct fashion; and "The Estuary" is a haunting ballad which dramatically describes a ship passing into the distance and into one's memory. There are minor flaws in Lemalu's performance, for example, he has a slight tendency to roll his r's unnecessarily, an affectation that I hope he uses sparingly in the future. But the talent is rich and most promising, the tone velvety and the future quite bright for this New Zealand-born Samoan performer. A highly recommended peek at a talent ready to fly.

Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13
McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."
Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12
If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.
Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06
Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!
The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.
Love and frustration.......2007-03-08
This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??
Sincerely,
Lyndall

Jean Redpath is a rare find.......2001-07-04
I first heard Redpath sing the song titled Faraway Tom on NPR's Thistle and Shamrock many years ago. I was blown away by her singing style, so full of emotion. That song has stayed with me since then and it has taken me many years to come upon this album. The rest of the album is superb as well.
Beautiful, authentic, sung with understanding and love.......1999-04-11
I don't know if this is because Redpath is a woman or not, but she never sings with that gung-ho insistent cheerfulness that many male singers of Scottish/Irish songs have. Her interpretations are sensitive and lovely. This CD includes the lyrics--a pity that some of her other CDs don't.

Remember The Ones You Left Behind.......2000-09-06
Well, this is the end of Life of Agony as we know it. Back to scrapping the napster ruins and eBay bootlegs in order to find more tunes from these amazing artists. In a way, I am very happy LOA never made it big b/c the tone, meaning, enhancement, and wonderous thoughts that have blossomed from their 5 albums (3 really, the latter two were obligations) should be cherished by those who ingest their music, not carpet the country with their precious tunes. Basically, the Unplugged album is not very "unplugged." The first half of the cd is a live unedited unplugged show on the second stage in Holland. Most of the songs are from Ugly and SSS - the SSS songs fit well here. One bright spot are the versions of Let's Pretend and My Mind is Dangerous - MMID is the most sensational piece to ever come from LOA and it is even more apparent here. There is a surprise at the end of the show as LOA sneaks in one more tune with the full gear. Than we are taken to a live show back in 1993. Keith's voice is as ripe as ever and you can feel the emotion of LOA as they pound out RRR classics. The only missing song from the live set is Bad Seed that was a staple at many of the bands shows. Odd why it is not on the album. One thing though, Plexiglass Gate is a disappointing tease b/c it is the beginning of the song and than it carries into Respect. I guess for some of us, we would have liked to hear some of the original stuff like Plexiglass Gate, Coffee Break, and Drowning as live tracks to be cemented in our LOA collection, but unfortunately that is not the case. All in all, appreciate the final album in a wonderful collection of inspiring music that is amazingly rare to find and hear these days. Sorry folks, I'll keep my sheltered collection and quietly spread the word to those I feel are worthy enough to listen to it. Support Keiths' Died Laughing album or sorry Keith maybe not, maybe we'd like to keep you in the same cherished vault as LOA - not in the mainstream.
Great Last Album.......2000-08-29
I will truly miss this band. If I could rewrite my reviews I give all their albums 5 stars. Stop comparing the albums with each other and accept them for what they are. The record is great. It was cool to hear loa in their heavy days but the unplugged stuff is really heart felt. Check out Among Thieves Alan's band, Stereomud Joey's band and Keith's solo record. Their all great bands. I am a fan for life plus I got the loa logo tatooed on my arm!!
The Stain Will Always Remain.......2000-08-25
Its hard to believe this will be LOA's last album, but it is an awsome way of saying goodbye. As we get one more look at Brooklyn New York's finest. The first 8 tracks consist of an amazing acoustic show from Holland. The show clocks in at about 40 minutes. The acoustic takes on these songs are extremely well done. ( The acoustic tracks consist of songs mostly off of "Ugly" and "Soul Searching Sun") The show was recorded a month prior to the release of "Soul Searching Sun". After the show there is an unreleased remix of "Other Side of the River", which is not much different than the original, but has a cool echo added over Keiths voice. After this track there are 3 tracks that were originally featured on the "River Runs Red digi-pack" and appear here in remastered form. These live tracks catch LOA at their best in their raw primal aggression. Then there are two bonus tracks including "my eyes" which was only played live once or twice. All in all this is an amazing comp. It is an awsome way to some up your LOA collection. Thank You Life of Agony for the 5 amazing records and the awsome nyhc demo tapes.. The stain will ALWAYS remain..

Album Description
Lazy Old Sun-Live/Life in the Low Lands, to be released this fall, represents a new milestone into Fay Victor's musical development after Darker than Blue's venture into freer and darker sounds. Recorded live, the CD is a blast, from the introspective opener "Lazy Old Sun" to the raucous closer "Last Night I had a Dream", artfully building a level of suspense and urgency maintained throughout the record.
Introducing the novelty of a concept album in the form of a live recording, Lazy Old Sun captures Fay Victor and her European-based band in peak form during 2 concerts in The Netherlands. Through a stunning variety of moods and material, based on the concept of life as a transitory settler in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Fay and her equally audacious musicians display a singular, recognizable and mature style of making improvised music. While this results into an adventurous energy somewhat rare among current jazzbased vocal concepts, Fay and her band never fail to captivate the audience. Some of the songs featured are: People are Strange (The Doors), Saturday and Sunday(Jackie MacLean), Laura, Lazy Old Sun (The Kinks), along with several original pieces, ranging from the plaintive "Stealaway" through the more pop-like arrangement of "There they are", to the collective improvisational blasts of "Magere brug" and "Nieko".

"Why Don't You Check Out Your Mind," Indeed........2007-06-13
Never mind the pleasant-but-safe croonings of Madeline Peyroux or Diana Krall. Fay Victor represents jazz as it should be. Not polite murmurs for your mental supper club but exhilaration, brooding, fear and hope in the face of exploring a new land, or returning to the old one. Listen to her work her magic on a tune by Sonny Rollins or The Doors, backed by a sympathetic band of Dutchmen. If you are used to cocktail backdrops being the limits of jazz, give it time to grow on you. If you are a fan of artists like Jeanne Lee, Betty Carter and Cassandra Wilson, this is something you need in your collection. Without a doubt.
