The crest of British folk-rock--that being the late '60s and into the early '70s--isn't something that can be easily encapsulated in 60 minutes. Rhino Records tried mightily to summarize the movement in 1995 with its fine, three-part Troubadours of British Folk series, but one suspects the producers would've loved to have had a fourth volume to work with. That said, the single-disc Heart of England serves up a savory (if not overly filling) Brit-folk buffet built around bite-size servings of Sandy Denny, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Martin Carthy, and others. Fans of the genre will find this anthology a little on the light side; newcomers, however, will find it to be a suitable starter. --Steven Stolder
