Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars This Rocks!.......2007-07-25

This Cd ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! It's my favorite beatles album. It has a different veriety of songs. For Some songs you just have to appriciate the music instead of the lyrics like "why don't we do it in the road?"
The Only one i don't like is "Yer Blues". It's Like their solo albums. The Best CD i ever herd!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A perennial classic.......2007-07-23

As good today as it was back in the 1980s when I first bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29

This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.

In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.

The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.

How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27

Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!

5 out of 5 stars It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23

This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

5 out of 5 stars So good only Van could have picked the songs.......2007-07-31

You either love or hate Van the Man. Over 40 years he has given the world some of the most heartfelt beautiful music ever recorded. This best of provides a stunning glimpse into the breath and depth of what he is capable of delivering. Showing respect to those who came before him, this collection is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. In the hands of the recording company this offering could have been a diaster. Thanks Van for giving us your gems for this collection.

5 out of 5 stars great new album.......2007-07-24

I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-07-23

This is a 2 disc CD with lots of great songs. I really like the mix of songs and definitely recommend this to Van Morrison fans.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection.......2007-07-12

I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars All the # 1 hits of the Beatles........2007-07-18

This record has all the number one hits in the history of the Beatles, what you can add to that.

5 out of 5 stars As good as you think it is.......2007-07-08

John, Paul, George, and Ringo. If this phrase does not move you then you should go back to your George Michael videos and prey he'll become heterosexual! This is everything that you remember from the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-06

Beatles 1 is a good collection of the Beatles #1 hit singles. Perfect for the casual Beatles fan or for someone just being introduced to the Beatles music for the first time. If you are interested in hearing more Beatles music, collect their albums. Depending on your taste, you can get their early 60s stuff or their late 60s stuff or both time periods. Personally, I enjoy their early 60s stuff more than their late 60s stuff and have a collection of their early 60s albums.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of past music.......2007-06-27

I guess this is a CD of their best songs and is well worth buying. Now I have a tape and CD of their music and could not be happier.

Album Description

In celebration of Paul Simon's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, The Essential Paul Simon brings together all of his hits and favorite tracks in the most expansive, solo career-spanning compilation issued for the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-07-30

I purchased this two-CD album as a gift for a friend who is very much into music, particularly the music of Paul Simon's era. I have not listened to it personally, but the recipient called me to say he was enjoying it immensely.

4 out of 5 stars great compilation - particularly for a car trip.......2007-07-14

I have a lot of Paul Simon CD's so you could say I didn't really need this two CD set. However, I make a 3 hour car trip a couple of times a year and when I saw this I immediately thought how great it would be to have these two CD's in the changer in the trunk for my next road trip. Its sort of a "greatest hits" but with some songs I've never heard before as well. It covers a long span of years and my only complaint is that it does not include the incredible song "Homeless".

4 out of 5 stars Sweet and Simple.......2007-07-03

When it comes to music right now, there just really isn't anything that is actually exciting. While there are so many acts that just seem to get by on gloss like Beyonce', Britney Spears, and Usher, there just really isn'y anything anymore about songs and artists that just comes from the simplistic words themselves. There have been acts that have made great records, they just missed the cut when it comes to sales last year from Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Paul Simon. Although Paul has been recognized with great acheivements in music on his own, as a member of Simon & Garfunkel, he has truly made the music of our times, and this collection shows it.

The 2007 Essential Paul Simon is a double album reflection of what made Paul Simon's solo career so dynamic and universal. This was made in honor of his recent inagural Gershwin Award for Song, as well as his 35th anniverasry as a acclaimed solo artist. This collection follows in suit very nicely, and expands the effort delightfully that was made so well on his last solo hits package, 2002's On My Way. The songs here flow very nicely, and have all been remastered very well. All of his classics are highlighted here including the guilty pleasures 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, You Can Call Me Al, The Boy In The Bubble, as well as down to Earth gems like Mother and Child Reunion, and his Oscar-nominated Father and Daughter from the Nickelodeon animated film The Wild Thornberries Movie, and his recently overlooked track Outrageous from his overshadowed 2006 album Surprise. This version also add in on the fun, by including some great music videos of his work and craftsmanship in songwriting like Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes, and a rendidtion of the Simon & Garfunkel gem, Mrs. Robinson from the classic 70's The Dick Cavett Show.

All in all, The Essential Paul Simon really captures a delightful reflection on a career that has acclaimed for so many years, and also does a wonderful job at reintroducing one of the most legendary artists of the past five decades. If you haven't heard any of Paul Simon's music, than you really don't know what you've missed from a great icon like Paul. I absolutely recommend this hits collection a whole lot. You can still call him Al, but just call him a legend.

At a time when the majority of those his age are drifting into retirement, 65-year-old Bob Dylan has put the capper on a three-record run that ranks with the best in his storied, 44-album career. Like Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft before it, Modern Times is a rootsy, blues-soaked pool of the purest form of Americana--skipping the progressive bells or whistles for an understated backing by his touring band. Dylan's voice, which cracks, rasps and moans from the pop singer's pulpit, hasn't been this rich and emotive since 1976's Desire. And while his lyrics prolong his steadfast allusions to a higher power and his own immortality, they are not without the Dylan mirth, as when he sings of tracking pop queen Alicia Keys from Hell's Kitchen to Tennessee in "Thunder on the Mountain," the album's opener, which teams with "Someday Baby" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" (for which Dylan misguidedly claims writing credit) as the record's most fiery numbers. Still, it's the Dylan that tells of a slave-loving owner ("Nettie Moore"), brings New Orleans to the front burner ("The Levee's Gonna Break") and plays the part of an eloquent lounge singer ("Spirit on the Water," "When the Deal Goes Down" and "Beyond the Horizon") that makes Modern Times sound just like old times. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-08-01

This is an incredible album. I can listen to the entire thing from beginning to end without skipping any songs. This is great listening from a true artist with an astonishing length of reference for lyrics. If you like something mellow to drive and listen to on long trips, this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Times.......2007-08-01

This is not the Dylan of the 60's (or 70's or 80's). A lot of the growl in his voice is gone and there is a lyric quality to it. The songs have a lilt, a rhythm and lift, to them that is infectious. The lyrics are as good as anything Dylan has written. It is one to listen to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Times.......2007-07-27

And Bob has definitely kept up with the modern times . . .
Good songs, good music. This is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Modern Times is a modern classic.......2007-07-14

Don't worry: no matter what the title may imply, Modern Times is not Dylan attempting to update his music to fit current trends. He has yet to do that. Instead, Modern Times is for the most part a bluesy album: he even rewrites a few blues classics ("Rollin' and Tumblin" becomes, well... "Rollin' and Tumblin'"; "Someday Baby" is a slightly different "Trouble No More" with the "Hip Shake"/"La Grange" riff, and "Levee's Gonna Break" is little more than a rewrite of "When the Levee Breaks"). "Rollin'" is energetic, but it's also probably the weakest moment on a generally strong record - original blues songs like the wrenching "Workingman's Blues #2" and hard-rockin' "Thunder on the Mountain" (love the guitar solo!) are the two indisputable highlights, and they're perfectly contrasted by jazzy country-blueses such as "Spirit on the Water", "Beyond the Horizon" and "When the Deal Goes Down". The country songs here are all among the greatest Dylan ever did in the genre, though to be fair none of them are "Lay, Lady, Lay" - "Horizon" is a bit too long, but only by about a minute or so. And while Dylan's melodies are normally nothing worth getting excited about, I love the melody (and the lyrics, and everything else) found on "Nettie Moore". In fact, I think "Nettie Moore" is my favorite song on this album - it hasn't gotten the hype of songs like "Thunder on the Water", "Workingman's Blues #2" or "Spirit on the Water", but it's a fabulous folk song and I will definitely stick up for it. Give it ten years; this'll be one of Dylan's classic songs. You see if it isn't. Oh yeah, and "Ain't Talkin'" has the best lyrics found on this album. And I really like the song's dark, doomy atmosphere too, with the violins and such. Plenty of albums by awful artists came out in 2006, and it's nice to hear Dylan (who's twice the age of most members of My Chemical Romance - third behind the Eagles and Green Day as the band I unnecessarily insult the most in my reviews, by the way) showing them all up. This is his best in a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars As good as Dylan gets.......2007-07-12

Its a shame that so many folks become closed minded to new music at a certain age. This is as good as anything Dylan has ever done, but because of the above it won't be remembered as well.

As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01

I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07

These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20

This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.

My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.

5 out of 5 stars LED ZEPPELIN Collection.......2007-01-10

Simply wonderful. Exactly what I was waiting and hoping for. Excelent package and sound quality.

2 out of 5 stars Worst packaging job ever........2007-01-07

The music in this set is brilliant and is 5 stars all around.

Unfortunately, the packaging for this set is absolutely atrocious. The box itself is pretty cool and even has a little door that slides away into the box (like an old garage door). Inside the box are 6 slots for the photo book/new liner notes and the 5 CD cases. Each CD case is a little hardback book that holds 2 CDs and the recreated liner notes from the original LPs. For example, Led Zeppelin I and Led Zeppelin II are housed in the same hardback book with original liner notes. Unfortunately, if you want to read the liner notes for II, you have to flip the booklet over and start from the back. This is just stupid and the idea should have been shot down at the very beginning as soon as someone realized it would require Presence to come before Physical Graffiti if you wanted to have both discs of PG in the same booklet. The next packaging problem is that the CDs are housed in paper slots inside the booklets. CDs are not meant to be housed in construction paper. It scratches them every time the CDs are removed or replaced. Another stupid thing about this package is that the original cover art is shrunk down to little more than a 2 inch square.

So what we have here is shrunken cover art on booklets that present Led Zeppelin's CDs out-of-order with upside down liner notes and construction paper sleeves that scratch the CDs. This is not exactly the packaging that music of this quality deserves.

The packaging designers for this project should be ashamed of themselves. It might sound silly to harp on about this, but when the boxed set costs as much as this one does, it should be presented in a manner that is attractive, logical, and pays proper tribute to the original LP packaging. And, of course, it should be presented in a way that doesn't scratch up the CDs!

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. --Steven Stolder

1 out of 5 stars Zib Zob and Janice S.G. Are Right.......2007-06-22

This recording is distorted and it sounds as if he is singing with helium. Even the newer tracks sound as if they were recorded analog with outdated equipment. Many people are not aware that Mr. Young recorded back in 1966 under the name Napoleon XIV. And yet not one those hits appear here!

1 out of 5 stars I agree with Janis, and also..........2007-06-09

it's too bad that "Diamond Girl" and "Alone Again, Naturally" did not make it onto this album. Then, I would give it a 4 star rating. Really.

1 out of 5 stars Inexplicably skips one of his biggest hits.......2007-05-15

Although this is a nice collection of songs by CSNY's whiny singer, it's obvious that Young has never been able to write new songs as good as he could from 1970-1972. It makes you think he should have retired after his first few albums, doesn't it?

A word to the wise, if you're looking for "Horse With No Name," keep on looking, because it's not included in this set.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Restrospective of a Great Career.......2007-04-24

Actually, I'd give this CD four and a half stars. The only thing that prevents a five-star review is that any greatest hits of someone as important as Neil Young needs to have 2 CDs to cover all the material the man has produced over the years. Sound quality excellent, and the versions are full-length, as much as ten minutes in the case of 'Cowgirl in the Sand'. Neil Young was one of the seminal singer/songwriters of the sixties and early seventies, and his works capture the era of protest and baby-boomers coming of age. The song selection is good for a single CD. As someone who has most of Young's work on vinyl, I realize that this retrospective is only about half what deserves to be included, but it is a good start, and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Some hits and some album cuts.......2007-04-10

While this is an excellent collection of some of Young's best work, it is not really a greatest hits collection. While it includes his biggest hits(Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart), it omits some of his other hits and includes songs that were never even released as singles. I am a bit surprised that they included both "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Southern Man" on a single CD, since they are very similar musically. Of the two I always liked "Cowgirl" better, "Southern Man" is cliché ridden and perpetuates anti-southern stereotypes. All-in-all this is a solid collection for the casual Young fan.

Van Morrison went a long way towards defining his wild Irish heart with his first two classic albums: the brooding, introspective Astral Weeks (1968), and the expansive, swinging Moondance. If the first was the work of a poet, its sequel was the statement of a musician and bandleader. Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You." The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favorite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grownup in a kiddie matinee. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars slice of heaven..........2007-06-22

She looked at me with those dark, mysterious eyes of hers and asked me to put on my favorite music. It didn't take but a moment for me to slip in MOONDANCE and so the night only got better from there. Smooth, mellow, rocking, with more soul then a Southern Baptist Church on a Sunday afternoon. No fillers here. Every song with a legacy of it's own. If music is the food of the gods then this one is a gift from the gods. Give it a listen and feel the rapture.

5 out of 5 stars Moondance.......2007-05-03

This album came after "Astral week" I find "Moondance" every bit as good, in fact more enjoyable to listen to. It has a timeless quality about it, and it really dos not sound like it's 37 years old. Overall it has a good fel to it. The first song,"And it Stoned Me",reminds me a lot of the band, and the brass, which is used throughout. The album has a very soulful vibe. On a couple of the songs there's even a gospel flaver ("come running" and 'crazy love"). When he sings"iI want to rock your gypsy soul" in "into the mystic", he makes it sound like tere is nothing mor important in the world. The best moment on the whole album is"Turn it up? Turn it up? Turn it up? a little bit higher" in caravan.
If people listen to the album a few times, the songs will stay with them forever.

5 out of 5 stars polished gems............2007-02-25

Every cut on this album is a polished gem; there are no fillers. "Stoned Me" starts the journey; "Moondance" still retains its sparkle (especially for Libras in October); "Into the Mystic" still haunts.

My personal favourite, "Brand New Day" still inspires me like a reverant hymn. Join Mr. Morrison for a quiet journey that soothes the senses.

5 out of 5 stars another morrison masterpiece........2007-02-13

"and it stoned me," and "into the mystic" are two of the greatest songs of the early 70's in my heart. and the entire album is almost equally as fantastic. after "astral weeks" and "veedon fleece" this is my third favorite van morrison album. music full of emotion, joy and spirit, this should not be missed out on by any audiofile.

5 out of 5 stars MOONDANCE IS A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE. .......2007-01-24

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "MOONDANCE" by one of Rock's most spiritual voices and one of Ireland's favorite son's, his name is VAN MORRISON. "MOONDANCE" was originally released in 1970 on vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Warner Brothers Records label. I purchased one of the very first releases of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is 3103-2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

VAN MORRISON is a true legend. MORRISON will always be remembered in Rock history as being one of the most gifted spiritual singers of all-time. MORRISON is actually having a spiritual experience while he is singing his songs. He not only sings to you, but he makes you feel the song along with him. U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to his fellow countryman by saying "America has the legendary Jim Morrison, and Ireland has the legendary Van Morrison." I couldn't have said it better myself. VAN MORRISON started his career as lead singer for the 60's Irish group "THEM" and scored international hits in 1965-66 with "Here Comes The Night," "Mystic Eyes" and "Gloria." MORRISON would begin a solo career in 1967 and score a top 5 U.S. hit with "Brown Eyed Girl." In 1968, MORRISON signed with Warner Brothers and released the album "ASTRAL WEEKS" followed by "MOONDANCE" in 1970. "MOONDANCE'S" themes of mysticism, romance and the personal quest are found in classic compositions such as the title track "Moondance," "And It Stoned Me," "Caravan," "Into The Mystic" and "Brand New Day."

Rather than list and describe all the songs in full detail, I am going to descibe one song in this whole album that really tells the full story and personality of this album. If there was ever any one song that makes the whole album worth while and worth listening to, it is the classic song "Into The Mystic." When I listen to this song, it makes me feel alive, and at peace with myself. The soothing mellow music makes you feel like you're home. "Into The Mystic" actually makes you feel like you are having a spiritual experience of joining your whole body and soul with your spiritual being. I love "Into The Mystic" and I hope you will love it too.

I highly recommend this album for those who are really deep into soul searching. This legendary album will stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, VAN MORRISON is here to stay. Rock n' Roll needs a great spiritual singer to give Rock n' Roll the spiritual roots and rejoicing sounds it desperately needs in order to keep the spirit of Rock n' Roll alive. In my opinion, VAN MORRISON has accomplished these goals and more. Heres to you Van. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. VAN MORRISON RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

Even as the Beatles began heading toward an inevitable breakup, their prolific ways continued; this two-disc look back only skims the surface of their later achievements. Excerpts from Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, the white album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be compete for space with classic singles that do as much or more to prove their eclecticism: the epic ballad "Hey Jude," the plaintive "Strawberry Fields Forever," straight rock & roll of all stripes from the plainspoken "Revolution" and "Get Back" to the surreal "Come Together." Decades after the split, this (and its companion set of 1962-1966 cuts) remains a favored introduction for young listeners and a key sampler for veteran fans. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars This fixes the Beatles #1 mistake.......2007-07-17

Their mistake was including Revolution1 on the white album instead of the catchy faster Revolution that can be found on the blue album. That makes this worth buying if you don't want to get it on past masters volume two.

5 out of 5 stars The "hit machine" continues to strike.......2007-04-29

This band was amazing, I am to young to have been part of it, but I do feel like I was there when I listen to this band. This band will never be forgotten. So many classic hits they have produced !

5 out of 5 stars Once again, a great Starter kit.......2007-03-08

Like I said with the review for the Red album, if you're just getting into the Beatles, no better place to start. Listen to it for the course of about 2-3 months and once you get the idea of what they're about and the direction of their music, then you can branch off onto the albums like "Revolver", "Sgt. Peppers", "Abbey Road", etc. you won't regret it for the rest of your life.

If there was anything a person can do in their life, getting into the Beatles could defintely be one of the best (and smartest)choices you'll ever have to make

5 out of 5 stars when the psychedelic counterculture hijacked the Top 40.......2007-01-14

The BLUE and RED ALBUMS make more sense to me now than they did in when they were first compiled in 1973. At the time, it just seemed like a blatant marketing move, but that was when many of us were immersed in Beatles albums, and would not settle for a "superficial greatest hits." In reality they were always indispensable because they included so many great singles that were not on the regular albums.

CDs changed the way we listen to music (you don't have to get up and change sides every 20 or 30 minutes, and you can program out cuts you don't want to hear), and while you can of course create your own collection, this is pretty close to perfection as a hit singles highlights gets for the late Beatles. Perfect for driving! These discs only contain about 60 minutes of music, and it could be 80, but by the 1990s the 1973 collections were classics themselves. I can't give the set less than 5 stars considering the music that it DOES include!

Personally, one of my gripes was always that REVOLVER should have been in the BLUE ALBUM so that all the late psychedelic music would be together. Some other ideas to make what is nearly perfect even better --

1) Substitute George's "It's All Too Much" for "Lucy In the Sky." George's great song ended up stuck on YELLOW SUBMARINE, but it was part of the SGT. PEPPER'S sessions, and is a much better song than LSD. 2) Move "A Day in the Life" so that it follows "With a Little Help From My Friends". 3) In the animal department, substitute Paul's "Blackbird" from the WHITE ALBUM for "Octopus's Garden." 4) Substitute John's "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" from the WHITE ALBUM for John's "The Ballad of John & Yoko," a non-album single which I never liked. The former is Lennon at his subversive best, and the song works just as well with Iraq as the backdrop as it did with Vietnam. 5) Substitute Paul's "Two of Us" from LET IT BE for George's "Old Brown Shoe," a non-album single. 6) Substitute John's "Rain," a non-album single (B-side to "Paperback Writer" from 1966, currently available only on PAST MASTERS, Vol. 2), for Paul's reggae-influenced "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da."

The late Beatles worked on multiple levels, and what was just immaculate pop to some represented emerging higher consciousness to others. Those seeds of enlightenment are still in the music, and we need them more than ever!

5 out of 5 stars 500,000,000 record executives just couldn't be wrong.......2006-10-22

The Beatles' "Blue Album" celebrates their talent by boasting nothing but just some of their infamous hits from the years 1967-1970. These songs come from several of the greatest rock albums of all time including Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles ("The White Album"), Abbey Road and Let It Be. The Beatles' "Blue Album" both proves their genius and demonstrates their singular talent that no other band can replicate.

The two CD set allows us to realize that The Beatles wrote many different types of songs with different styles. This is also essential music that offers something for just about anyone who listens to the two CD set. The first CD starts off strong with the popular and psychedelic "Strawberry Fields Forever," other psychedelic and experimental songs include "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "I Am The Walrus." There are beautiful ballads celebrating love including "All You Need Is Love" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The Beatles also address the angst of a love that is no longer in the songs "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "The Long And Winding Road." Finally, the band sings songs that are just plain fun including "Octopus's Garden" and "Back In The U.S.S.R."

Another reviewer makes an excellent point: If you want to understand the sharp differences in style between John Lennon and Paul McCartney at this time in their careers there is no better comparison than between "Hey Jude," which is an classic ballad indeed, and "Revolution," which is rather conceited, smug and bitter all at once.

The Beatles' use of the unconscious when writing trippy songs like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "A Day In The Life" enabled them to reach out to their fans and ultimately the world. The lyrics make sense even when they make no sense; this only adds to the beauty of the more psychedelic, trippy songs. Moreover, the songs on this two CD set work so well because they address universal themes of wanting to be loved, celebrating love and mourning a lost love.

The liner notes boast the lyrics to each song and great color photos of the band. The liner notes include the song credits, too.

Indeed, The Beatles were so prolific in their writing and performing that this two CD set barely skims the surface of what they truly accomplished between the years 1967 and 1970. If you like this CD set I highly recommend you buy individual Beatles' albums to discover more about the band's creativity and boldness.

Overall, this two CD set is more than just an introductory retrospective of The Beatles' music during the turbulent late 1960s. The "Blue Album" celebrates The Beatles' ability to communicate their political beliefs and amorous feelings for other people through their songs. These songs remind us to understand and appreciate the blessings of love, the evils of war and the importance of world peace--now.

I highly recommend this CD for Beatles fans, fans of great 1970s rock music and anyone who wants to experience how The Beatles taught us what was right through their music. This two CD set is a must have for any Beatles' collector as well as for anyone who wants to study the history of rock and roll.

Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. --Steven Stolder
