When Beck mangles folk, hip-hop, country, blues, and lo-fi rock into a unique sonic species, he pays homage to his influences in a way that is utterly entertaining. Indeed, the alt-rock vagabond is responsible for some of the 1990s' most indispensable music. In his lesser moments, however, Beck's attempts at emulating his preceptors fall flat, creating only B-grade versions of the genuine articles. Midnite Vultures splits down the middle between the great Beck and the not-so-great Beck. About half the album gorges on retro pulp fiction, a "Becksploitation," if you will, where his relatively straightforward impersonations shortchange his influences. On the slow-burn soul tracks "Peaches and Cream" and "Debra" or the 808-driven tributary "Hlwd. Freaks," he lacks the pipes, heart, and history to pass as a legitimate double-breasted soul man or old-school rapper. The other half, finding Beck in his element, is exhilarating. His unfaltering studio mastery is especially evident on standouts such as the horn-punched "Sexx Laws," the steamy, slap-bass-blasted "Nicotine and Gravy," and the wah-wah bombast of "Mixed Bizness." The album proves that Beck playing the straight-up funkateer will never match ranks with the raw talents of Marvin Gaye, George Clinton, or Prince, but as long as he adheres to more inventive genre splicing, he remains compelling in his own right. --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars A different side of Beck.......2007-06-27

This album was designed to be a little more out there than some of his other projects. It's got some great upbeat tunes that will get stuck in your head, but look for Guero or Odelay first.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-05-01

I like Beck...a lot. Loved mellow gold, mutations, sea change, guero (showing that I'm cool with his experimenting). This album is just not good. I don't like a single track on the album. It sounds cheap and arranged at the last minute.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst albums I have ever heard.......2007-03-26

This album is seriously a joke. It has to be a joke, because Beck's voice has no soul. Yeah, it supposed to be funky, but adding ________ noises to a beat that already sounds ambysal is like mixing matches with gasoline.

It's not funky, it dosent have soul, and the album is a turd. I haven't figured out if I like Beck instead. This album has no rythem and is a slapped together lego set that looks liek a piece of _____. If you want real cool music, try Trout Mask Replica instead. Guero was better. I haven't tried anything else, although Paper Tigers didn't sound very promsiing.

Avoid this train wreck. The song Broken Train represents everything this flaming turd is.

5 out of 5 stars One of Beck's finest works!.......2007-02-27

Well what can I say this one of my favorite Beck CD's ever put out. It's great and it can satisfy any one's taste of music. The overall mood of this album is great, party like it's 1999. A great composer, a great album and and great album art to go with it.

5 out of 5 stars Beck's Most Eccentric, Enthralling and Mystifying Disc to Date.......2006-10-20

When lil' Beck Hansen stumbled into stardom with his quirky white-boy raps and sitar-haunts in 1994's "Mellow Gold", none could have foreseen his progression as a musician, entertainer and artist. With "Odelay" Beck molded a compelling stew of rock, country and hip-hop; sampling Bob Dylan and screaming about having a "Devil's Haircut" in his mind. It's a classic to be sure, as is his low-fi, majestic followup; "Mutations". Yet no one could have foreseen what was to come out of Beck's fascinating noggin next...

"Midnite Vultures" is Beck's most adventurous album ever. It is a funk, soul, electronica and rap album all in one. It is loud. It is energetic, and it is the complete polar opposite of its predecessor; "Mutations". After the simple recording process of "Mutations", Beck opted to take his next album completely in his own hands, self-producing the entire record in a custom home studio... and it shows. Beck's manic fantasies of "defying the logic of all sexx laws" and dropping "lobotomy beats" are ideally realized in sheer instrumental complexity and truly mesmerizing vocal presence. It is as if Beck lost himself in the late nights of disco nightclubs, cheap hotels and funky electronica somewhere between the 70's and 80's. Beck bends and bounces his voice like never before (or after) in his career on this album, opting for a laughable yet potent falsetto in the album's most progressive numbers. The songs initially sound so ridiculous that you may think it's a comedy album, and as the album progresses, the pace slows down a tad,and yet it never becomes dull. Repeat listens only further reveal the album's layered complexity and soul.

"Vultures" is difficult to easily describe. It traverses horn-ripping funk, blazing funk guitar and high-pitched Beck falsetto with "Sexx Laws" and "Mixed Bizness". "Get Real Paid" is somewhat of an electronica beat-fest, initially a seemingly repetitive and soulless meld of computer-speak and sexy double-entendres just as it dawns upon a rapid-fire sing-along chorus and a glorious harmony between every component it contains. It's odd yet compelling. Just like "Hollywood Freaks", which is a true departure; a sort of gangsta-rap parody with Beck cheesily rapping about expensive jeans and " hot dogs, no doz and hot sex in back rows". It will attract some listeners and alienate others. "Pressure Zone" and "Peaches and Cream" find Beck in a rockin' mood, while "Beautiful Way", with its building piano melody, country guitar and harmonized vocals, is perhaps the slowest and most heartfelt track on the album. "Debra" ends the party with a bit of a slow-jam, it's funky horns slowly unveil a screaming falsetto from Beck as he muses over gettin' it on with the sister of a chick he met at JC Penny's. It's a fan favorite, and there's a reason for that.

If you are curious, buy it. It is a masterpiece in its own right. Many listeners find it too much a departure and a joke to be considered a worthy effort from the Bard of the Barrio, but repeat listens will mine the glittering gold this album has to offer. It is easily the most fun you shall have singing along with any Beck album and that's for sure! But all jokes aside, "Midnite Vultures" is another reason you can tack on the blackboard attributing Beck as one of the most skilled, visionary and fascinating musicians of our time. It is fun, raucous, complicated and beautiful. It is mystifying, eccentric and addictive. If you like Beck, it is a must-buy... Really, if you like music it is a must-buy. "Midnite Vultures" is a mesmerizing and utter triumph.

(Note) If you are new to Beck, try "Mellow Gold" or "Odelay" first, they make the transition to this album a bit more confusing and fun.

Descend Like Vultures is a fabulous collection of delirious, dizzy alt-pop. At times it reaches the highest acclaim any pleasantly detuned indie-rock can achieve: comparisons to New Zealand indie-rockers from the 1980s. Of course, those bands are fairly obscure these days and this Bay Area bunch may never have heard the Great Unwashed or Tall Dwarfs before. Regardless, they all share an equal love for pure, unbridled pop music and introspective experimentation. Rogue Wave's strummy debut was weighted closer to the pop side, while the new album leans more toward noise in content and pop in context (in the clean sheen of big studio production). In particular, "10:1" marks a new direction, towards a deep immersion in heaviosity. Let's hope the inclusion of "Every Moment" on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack has raised the band's profile to where folks aside from kids who post to indie bulletin boards obsessively will hear this album. Vultures is darker, stranger and better than its predecessor. -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

This is where Rogue Wave, the band, really gets started. As Oakland-based singer/songwriter/arranger Zach Rogue puts it, "this record is the sound of four people's ideas colliding." Descended Like Vultures, Rogue Wave's second full-length for Sub Pop, is a velvety, darkly dichotomous album: pop vs. despair; hope vs. realism. Whereas Rogue's `04 release, Out of the Shadow, was for all intents and purposes a solo project, Descended Like Vultures finds Zach Rogue's unapologetic hooks and soaring melodies built up skyscraper-high by bandmates and mulit-instrumentalists Pat Spurgeon, Gram LeBron and Evan Farrell, who have grown close and road-seasoned thanks to a year of intensive international touring with The Shins, The Helio Sequence, TV on the Radio, and Mates of State. While the new album isn't an overtly political record, (rather, it's more humanitarian) Zach Rogue's impeccable songwriting was heavily informed by what he and his band experienced on the road. On this release, Rogue Wave leaves no stone unturned, no possibility unexplored.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2007-01-20

I stumbled upon "Love's Lost Guarantee" while listening to Pandora and loved that song. I bought this CD and love almost every song. Its California pop music plain and simple. Some great harmonies and nice guitar work. I like "Publish My Love", "Are you on My Side", "Catform" and "You"

The new single "Eyes" is wonderful also, you should definitely download that one off iTunes or buy the CD single.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-12-21

This is a flawless pop record on a Pet Sounds scale. I'm just sad this wasn't a part of my collection sooner. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Just Getting Better.......2006-05-25

I absolutely adored this CD, mostly because the music is so different and the band seems to have such a creative force in music-making. If I was forced to pick a genre for this release I would say 60s psychedilic influenced new-new wave. Standouts include "Publish My Love" and "California" but any song would honestly give you chills.

Also, if you enjoy this band, be sure to check out thier first CD, "Out of the Shadow" for more of a experimental 60s influenced sound.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-05-15

This album is absolutely amazing! I got turned onto Rogue Wave by hearing them on XM radio, and I was instantly hooked. They are totally underplayed. Every song on this album is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Rogue Wave-descended like vultures.......2006-03-20

Rogue Wave is another addition to the sub-pop records family, with bands like the shins, the constantines, the elected, Damien Jurado, and Postal Service, this seattle based record company has the leading edge of indie bands. Zach Rogue writes almost everything for the cd and it really shows the true sound he wanted to get from this album. "Bird on a wire" has the sound of many Elliot Smith songs, "Publish my love" is a soft resonant song that leaves you still wanting to be convinced as to what he can do while "Love's Lost Gaurantee" and "10:1" broaden the sound to create the two ranges that his music could create to be the two best songs on the album. The next song "California"
is not another beach, summer, song it's totally voices my opinion about that certain state in the first two opening words where he says "screw california". and the next best song that almost ends the cd is "you" which has awesome pausing and echoey guitar where he sings about finding love. Under the Radar magazine gave it Number 5 best cd of 2005 and it could have been higher. So this is the sound I've been waiting to hear and Rogue has definetly has delivered.

Album Description

Portugal The Man is an Alaskan band living in Portland. Their soulful indie rock blends influences from the ever seminal sounds of early 70's rock, R&B, and vintage soul with the latest innovations in melodious experimentation (drum machines, programming, sampling). They push the boundaries of contemporary music and the album is filled with social commentary and alliteration. For fans of The Flaming Lips, Blonde Redhead, and Portishead.

2 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2007-05-03

One of the most creatively ambitious bands in the scene, but the music confirms what the band name and album title suggest, that their perspective is very self-conscious and their primary ambition is just to stand out. I'll give them some credit for fully abandoning the screaming and metal riffs, but the kind of meandering minor-key arrangements they've found their way to strike me more as the product of looking over their shoulder at what other bands are doing than following their own creative muse. The layering seems haphazard, creating a cluttered effect where all the instrumental parts mutually relieve each other of responsibility for providing a foundation for the song. They're putting the decorations on but they forgot to buy the tree is what it feels like.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in awe.......2007-04-07

This album is like velvet and white noise harmonizing. It's melodic, sexy and haunting. I can't help but get lost in the music everytime I listen to this album.
If I had to compare it to other bands (which I'm barely able to) I'd say take Mars Volta, a lttle Kill Hannah, and a little Radiohead and you may have something close.
This album is just amazing

5 out of 5 stars phenominal album.......2006-09-17

I was at a concert probably last february or march and i got handed a sampler cd for fearless records, and 2 portugal. the man songs were on there, 3. Stables & Chairs, 4. AKA M80 The Wolf I thought those songs were amazing in an original way and i played them about 500 times before i decided to buy the album...I did and its amazing... Very original.... especially vocals... 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-07-17

Portugal. The Man's "Waiter - You Vultures!" is a mix of indie, soul, sort of hip-hop influence in one or two songs... and I dunno just really good. They're said to be known to sound like Circa Survive, but I think they sound better. They're a good find if you're looking for bands that sound different.

5 out of 5 stars Not the man, not the country, the band. .......2006-04-05

Sounds like a more subtle, more melodic Mars Volta, with some early Radiohead. In some ways this album is what I had hoped Frances the Mute would have sounded more like. Dark, moody, abstract lyrics hang delicately above jazzy, guitar-based psychedelia, although some tracks feature manic Blood Brothers-like vocals ("Marching with 6") to mix things up. Standout tracks include "AKA M80 the Wolf", "Stables and Chairs" and "Tommy", but overall, Alaska-based Portugal. The Man offer a strong debut for anyone who likes their music unusual and fresh.

5 out of 5 stars Blown away!.......2007-04-23

I have to say that I am totally blown away by this CD. Almost every song is awsome, unlike most CDs with one or two good songs. I had never even heard of Smile Empty Soul and just heard them on a free demo CD I got coming out after a Stone Sour concert. I have not heard Anxiety but really want to hear everything I can from them! This CD is a must buy!

3 out of 5 stars A pretty good Smile Empty Soul album BUT..........2006-12-29

WHAT THE F HAPPENED TO ANXIETY!! I Downloaded it illegally (yeah, that's right, illegally dammit, and the whole album at that) and I'm glad I did cause it was never realeased. I've gotta say, Anxiety was a much better attempt than this and frankly I'm dissapointed in the record label for not releasing it. Do whatever you can to obtain Anxiety cause it's way better than this...

5 out of 5 stars Smile empty soul released another smash hit!.......2006-12-09

This is a very amazing cd by one of the best bands ever-Smile Empty soul. I brought it on the fith of December. This one only hs 12 tracks. SES instead of basing it on thier music, they base songs of off lyrics. Thease songs are about issues that an every day teen faces. But be advised, they do some cursing. Most of the cursing is done in "Live Forever". The other 11 songs should be great.

However, only a few songs are on par with one of thier best albulms ever Anxeity. with is a shame since I was expecting a little bit more out of SES. But since Anxeity wasnt released by the record commpanies , this will have to do. This is still a GREAT abulm because its new and the singer Sean Dilisen has something to say!

The best songs on here are: "Heres to Another", "The Hit", "Out to sea", "The Freaks are Comming".

I rate this abulm a 8/10.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner, but not number one for SES fans...........2006-12-06

I should start at the outset and say, I rarely review anything unless I find them extremely bad or extremely good. Needless to say, you've seen my rating and as such, I will tell you straight up front to buy this album. For long-time SES fans (of which there are few, but hopefully more as time goes by), you will realize that this is the weakest of the three records they have released, although there are some definite winning tracks.

Without a doubt, and I think I echo a lot of other comments here -- the best track on this album is "Here's to Another", a deep hitting song about alcoholism.

"I walked into a bar tonight
I knew that it was the last place I should be
I'm like a fly to the neon lights
A good buzz is the only thing I need"

Lyrics like that are what make SES the more lyrically rich band that I've ever heard. Other great songs on this album include Out to Sea, Disease, Loser, and a personal favorite, The Freaks are Coming.

I recommend you buy the album folks -- it's not their best, but still great. The first time listeners to SES can get a glimpse of their lyrical quality from this album, but it's recommended that they pick up the self titled debut album, and search the P2P networks for the tracks from Anxiety, their best album which went unreleased (unfortunately for all of us!).

That's it folks, hope this was informative -- get out there and support the only band that makes lyrics their centerpiece, not their music. The combination of the two makes SES one of the best bands ever to stream through my speakers. Join in the fun!

5 out of 5 stars Does anyone know where i can get Anxiety album.......2006-11-26

      Album Description

That Will Johnson is a powerful and prolific songwriter is not up for debate. His 200+ songs sustain three thriving, simultaneous musical entities: Centro-matic, South San Gabriel and his solo work. Johnson's talent is well documented - Centro-matic's 2003 release, Love You Just The Same, was the recipient of endless praise in the press, with mentions of Neil Young and the Replacements littering the reviews; South San Gabriel's hallucinatory chamber country, especially live, has been noted by such outlets as the New York Times.

After a seemingly endless itinerary of tour dates (including stints with My Morning Jacket, Death Cab For Cutie, Ben Kweller and more), Johnson has opted to strip things down on his second solo album. Vultures Await blends the minimalism of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band with the classic Americana of Springsteen's Nebraska. It carries the darkness absent in Johnson's other projects, but is not just somber - an underlying hopefulness flows through these songs. Stark vocal melodies cut a swath to Appalachia; ghosts of roadhouse barmen backing up against Flannery O'Connor are interwoven throughout piano ballads, acoustic elegies and, occasionally, fully fleshed-out pop songs that carry the seamless, rough emotion of a Southern literary genius. Sit back, have a drink and spend a little time with this one. You won't regret it.

WIll Johnson maintains the crown 'most prolific' of any performer/songwriter/band member within the canon of American contemporary recording artists of this century. A cultural icon to those who are aware of his abilities while an outer fringe cult artist to those whom have not a clue.
"Catherine Dupree" and "Just To Know What You've Been Dreaming" are just two of the songs that most recording artists today would kill to have written and recorded.
The beauty of Will's music, solo as well as with Centro Matic, is the sense of past musical accomplishments set by others, revisting those places of reference without reguritating, emerging with a true sense of musical purpose and scope.
These are wide musical landscapes to loose oneself, a place of solitude and reflection, poetic and powerfull, delicate yet balanced. Truly amazing in magnitude. Listen and be prepared to be drawn into the musical world of Will Johnson and Centro Matic, contenders that lerk behind the curtains, waiting to be disclosed to those who will listen............

5 out of 5 stars will does it once again.......2004-09-19

what an amazingly prolific songwriter - just keeps churning out great stuff. after six full length cds and numerous eps with centro-matic, two excellent south san gabriel cds, will now offers up a second superb "solo" effort. i say "solo" because will is once again joined by by centro mates scott (fiddle) and matt (drum programming?). however, will plays all instruments other than fiddle, showcasing the extraordinary musical talent that he is. as is the case with many of my favorite cds, vultures await took a few listens to appreciate the full package. some highlights are the tom waitsesque 'catherine dupree'; nice scott fiddle on 'just some silence' and 'sleep a while'; the upbeat 'just to know youve been dreaming' (nice piano chorus line); rhythm and blues on 'fly, my sweet dove'; will and an acoustic guitar 'as victims would' and 'a thousand other parts'; personal fav 'closing down my house'. fabulous stuff. word is that the guys are working on the next south san gabriel. cant wait.

          5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for any Collection.......2000-01-24

Great selection of tunes and guest artists. Pipeline, Walk-Don't Run", Wipe-Out and the classic"Last Date" are excellent examples of what happens when a couple of great musicians get together and just want to have fun. Rob Ickes RULES on the Dobro!

4 out of 5 stars Great surf tunes & others, lively........1999-10-07

I'm listening to it right now. Pipeline, Apache, Green Onions, Wipeout. They're great! The music is not loud, almost soft. No vocal, just instruments. Buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Surfer music from a bluegrass ensemble........1999-04-10

It's the best of both parts of the diverse soundtrack of my adolescence - great radio hits of the Sixties done in an indescribably hip instrumental style. "Sleepwalk" is done as it absolutely must be done, the lead on this venerable old belly-rubber has never sounded as plaintive as it does on the Dobro. "Wipeout" has a delightfully insane approach to the hackneyed old drum solo - mouth music, grunting, and "found" percussion. It couldn't be any better.

You have to listen to this to believe it. If you ever went to something like the Catholic Youth Organization dances, listened to KMEN 1290 in its pop heyday in Southern California, or danced to "Last Date" with that really special someone, and then later included bluegrass in your expanding musical collection, you will play this CD until the paint falls off.
